      The resin is very stable over time, I think just like with wood glue, if it does separate, it would be the wood separating and not the resin. But I have never heard of this issue , just keep it out of water like any other wood item .

      ***** I've tried some Alumilite powders, and their metal powders seem to work pretty well. I've found their colored powders haven't worked as well as PearlEx. Another source for the powders is Coastal Scents (www.coastalscents.com). It's a makeup company, but their mica powders work awesome for casting! I really like their pearlescent powder, and it's way cheaper and mixes better than the Alumilite Pearl powder.

  • @acutabove_woodworkings
    @acutabove_woodworkings 9 років тому

    Nicely done Dema. I've never worked with resin but the more I see it done, the more I want too. Just out of curiosity, what would happen is you poured the resin and didn't use a pressure pot or a chamber during the curing time? Either way, great project sir.

    • @DemasShopforEverything
      @DemasShopforEverything  9 років тому

      Thanks kenbo, if u don't pressure pot it, u have a greater chance of air bubbles between the wood and resin, and it wouldn't stick as well

    Bringin' the bling. Really nice! Not that it's going to same a lot of time. But could you make the mold slightly off square (trapezoid'ish/cupped?) so you don't have to take a side off to remove the blank?

    • @DemasShopforEverything
      @DemasShopforEverything  9 років тому

      Not sure, I guess you could.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 9 років тому

      diycentral It wouldn't do any good, the resin will fill the mold no matter what shape it is and require some way of disassembling the mold to get the finished blank out of it.

    For someone wanting to get started, where can you find a good priced pressure pot or a cheaper alternative? Also, could you make a short video showing how to make the mold and about other things you could use to make the mold? does the mold require any kind of release agent so they resin does not stick to the mold?

    Excellent video. I have been thinking about switching from polyester resin to alumilite to create new pen blanks. Does the pressure pot accelerate the cure time? What are the working temperatures for alumilite? Thanks.

    • @DemasShopforEverything
      @DemasShopforEverything  9 років тому

      Thanks Jim, I don't think the pot does anything to the cure time, just bubbles. As for working temp, I have no idea but I'm sure they list that on their website

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 9 років тому

      Jim Coogan Nope it doesn't do anything for cure time, just supposed to help alleviate the air bubbles that for some reason alumilite is horrible for.

  • @GonzoDonzo
    @GonzoDonzo 9 років тому

    since the working time is so short would it be possible to mix in the color with one half of the resin prior to activating it. could give u an extra 30 seconds of time or so and allow u to tweak a color without fear of running out of time.

      You can find moister meters on Amazon or any wood store. I ussually put them in an oven at 120 degrees overnight to get the moister just right
