I'm glad someone else had to ask what the heck a call blank was, saved me having to do it !!!
symons666 How did you end up watching this video if you didnt know what a Call blank is??
***** Found this through basic woodworking searches.
*****
I can't answer for the other person, but I ended up here when I saw the link on the right hand side. I was looking for general woodworking tips and tricks so I can get better at woodworking. I saw the contrasting colors and decided to watch. I am always looking for interesting things to do with wood for my projects, to add color and contrast. Even if I don't hunt, I can still appreciate the fact that you shared some knowledge that I can use in other ways. Besides, I do like taking pictures of animals. I could possibly use a call to get some closer shots. Thanks for the video.
Very interesting video. One thing though is to ask how 'stabilized' the actual wood is. When we take punk wood blanks, we saturate them under vacuum with resin. I suspect that there is very little actual penetration of the wood by the resin with 60psi. Pressure really only eliminates bubbles in the resin. After the set time, I think you can safely relieve the pressure in your pot. That will allow you to increase production.
thanks for the informative video. Here's a couple of things I would do:
1. I'd definitely use a sled when trimming the blanks. It would be much safer and probably give better results.
2. I'd drill a board to hold the colorants. The small vials might be easy to lose track of and upset while mixing.
3. I'd set a timer for mixing, at least until I'd done the procedure several times.
Why do you use pressure instead of vacuum in the pot? I think that a vacuum might be better for de-airing small bubbles.
Oh, and why is the video mirror-imaged?
Gorgeous. I guess people without a bone of creativity would not see the value in this
I noticed you switched the camera view horizontally in this video. You were twisting the lids on backwards, the wing nuts on the pressure pot too, and the clock was rotating counter clockwise LOL. Then in the second half of the video it was turned back around. Great video, very detailed.
the camera was recording in mirror mode and when i realized it, it was too late to redo the video. so i just went with it hoping no one notices..lol
I have watched so many of your videos I was used to your shop being the other way around :)
I love it how you show what you are going to do, then tell us you are going to do it and then show us and tell us you did it.
+johnknoefler I dont understand what you complaint is. this video is an old and was one the first videos i released, i tried to visit your channel to watch some top notch videos and learn a thing or two but found nothing of that nature. But thank you for the input, i very much appreciate it on an older video of mine. LOL
I have never worked with the powder pigment before. That looks very slick, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching :)
Dema's WoodShop what is the molds made out of?
Phillip Taylor looks like nylon or perhaps Teflon
This video is very informative on a topic I haven't seen covered elsewhere, I can understand why it is popular.
Thanks Andy :)
you have an awesome shop set up!
Super impressive video man. Not only did you show the process from start to finish, but you did a great job explaining the process and the small nuances that go in to the process. Well done, and thanks!
so the "worthless" piece are expensive to buy and make.. wouldn't that make them kind of worth something?
+Aubrey Fairchild they are worthless because the pieces start as trash to most pieces and then turned into expensive pieces after casting with resin.
Most people *
In what way are they expensive? Who would pay money for a block of resin with some tree - isnt this kind of useless? Resin is cheap, but why would anyone pay more than about $5 for the block made in this video? I have resin but I dont see the purpose of this block.
I would say, other people make stuff from it. Duck/Deer calls, knife handles, gun handles you can make a little stand for something etc..
you should look up 'Secret Wood' rings.
Good vid Dimka. I use the exact same techniques except I cast with Sim 41. I also spray a little homemade mold release in my molds so I can pop the out without having to remove one side.
Ive never had any issue with the alumilite sticking to the mold, whats your homemade mold release made of?
10:51 That's what she said!
+Jonathan Barbera Incredible
I had to scroll through the comments to figured out what these are for. Very pretty, I would love to see what calls look like after your customers make them.

could be a very nice knife handle :)
+1prpoo They sell planks just for that , just look for stabilized wood scales at a knife supply.
plus it's great for matching gun Handles, sword hilts, any Yard working tools, even stirring wheels on cars and boats, shoot why not make accessories with the same process, you can make it into anything that your mind is limited to.
That's what I thought
yea man
1prpoo you are a genius thanks!!!
Very cool, thanks! As a tip, when you're estimating how much resin to fill with, you can use something like rice to fill in the container first, then dump that into a measuring container.
Thanks man, that's a good idea :)
Instead of applying air pressure, you might try applying a vacuum pump, to suck out any air bubbles!...
Nice, now all I need is a garage, CNC, saw, lathe, couch TV, TIME! I'm jealous and poor. Life's not fair lol. Awsome video mate
Lol, everyone could use more time
I'm gonna use this idea for some knife handles, thanks :)
That will definitely make some interesting knife scales.
I'm gonna be making my take on the traditional Sgian Dubh, I like things to be a bit different ;)
I had a knife custom made for my fiance out of this resin over a pine cone. When it's cut it looks like wooden scales with resin between the gaps. Super cool.
Nevir202 Kool, how has the handle held up? any wearing off of the resin?
You should try making guitar necks that way.
Im sure theres a market for it as it just has to be developed and no one has applied it yet.
Good Luck and thank you for sharing your skills with others for free.
Its how the world really should work together.
I take it other people noticed during editing he transposed the image in reverse.
I may have to get into this lol... I can see many uses for it as in knife scales, ferro rod handles etc... thanks for the share!!!
It's lots of fun and always turn out great in the end ;)
Супер! Очень красиво.
This video is very useful because most the the custom knife maker can do it easily to make blanks of knives for custom knives.
Very interesting how the text is all reversed and the screws on the pressure pot seem to be left hand thread.... or have I missed something.....
***** *angles, sorry I had to.
DG. Pierre What? Why'd you copy my comment?
sorry, angels. I had to*
Is it bad that i noticed the reverse threads on the pressure pot but not the text being reverse? I may be a contractor...
I didn't notice the screws, but I noticed he was turning the nuts on the pressure pot counter clockwise to tighten. It's inconsequential of course, still a good vid, but I'm curious how it got reversed/mirrored
These might work well for people who make combs, barrettes, hair sticks, and chop sticks as well. They could cut the blanks down to the sizes they would use for them. They look great!
Do I need the pressure pot to make these ? Or can it be done without ?
+Allannvsj A pressure pot is highly recommended, it crushes out any air bubbles. Technically you can do it without the pot but Alumilite is expensive to waste.
instead of positive pressure, why not a vacuum. I've used vacuum to help stabilize wood. A vacuum will suck the air bubbles out.
A vacuum will not draw the air bubbles out fast enough. The allumilite will harden way before the bubbles are gone.
Funny, i am not a killing hunter so my first thought was: He took something useless and transformed it to something more useless. But thhen i thought: u can CALL ANIMALS with it. You don't need to kill them like most hunters would do. And then i think: Animal call-ewrrrs made of plastic and can be found everywhere, very cheap and effortlessss! Then what drives him to do something like that? And then it hit me: You create something! That makes you a little God that moment. Keep up the ergo-therapy. I am very jealus of you, you have a creative hobby i wish i find one myself. I hope you always find time to excercise your art.
Lol thank you :)
how much do you sell these piece for?
Not much. Not worth the time.
I'm really impressed. They look great. I never knew there was something like this. Thanks for the video!
Диман,а теперь давай на русском!
+Алексей Береста привет! На родном русском где найти эту инфу??
так и не понял что это? кубики будут, или ручка для ножа? Они классные манят меня... хочу две!
где купить такую смолу и красители??
Awesome, My great friend and G-pa to my three older sons, build, use and sell custom goose and duck calls. They will be checking you out. Thanks for a great and professional video, you are a pro craftsman!
i all ways wanted to know how to "casting worthless woo into awesome call blan"
Thank you. Very useful and educational. I'm doing this on tikis. I have the pigments but hadn't thought of the pressure.
So "worthless" wood is prohibitively expensive?
must be priceless
Just wonder why would people read previous comments to find out what a call is before commenting?
Lol
Really nice video the added hold screw was a nice idea to stop wood movement
Robert Bennett Thank you Robert, you have no idea how often people ask what a call blank is, hopefully my next call blank video will answer the questins better. thank you for watching :)
can you do this project without a pressure pot?😊
It's possible but you will more than likely have micro air bubbles which don't look nice. A heat gun or torch can pop micro bubbles too.
I'm going to try vibration.
Time to go digging around in the wife's "toolbox"...
Mea Decker yes you can... It is a hell of a lot easier to....
MrHutt vacuum chamber works well too, and you won’t get into any trouble for raiding her toy box.
Без обит!Уважаю людей рукастых-сам такой.Береги себя!
This is such a cringy video haha
your profile picture is cringy boi gtfo
+V Thors hey good one dude. You're really cool. I'm gonna learn from this. Now I know how to be cool too. Thanks man.
You can make temporary moulds with that white 1/16" PVC plastic boarding or even cardboard. Or you could make reusable moulds with silicone (using a full block of wood as a template, you but the "junk" wood in with the resin later.).
the blue looked so cool
Now I know what a call blank is! Very cool! Thanks for the great post!!!
Thanks for watching Nik
😃
Thx Dema, this is great I really love the turquoise and rust together m, reminds me of chrysocolla.
I enjoy working with Epoxy but I can only use it during the summer so I may use it outside. I've heard horror stories about people using it inside without ventilation or a mask, they ended up with chemical pneumonia. Pls be safe!
great info, thanks for the video and sharing the info.
Never knew they sold Poly. in spray cans.. will try it out myself
Those would make amazing knife handle blanks too.
I ususally add pigment before mixing parts so that you could see if you mixed it good enough.
Nice colors btw.
That works too, but Alumilite is milky when adding the two parts together and needs to be mixed until it's water clear, so adding the pigment first may not work in this case ;)
that 60 frame tho. so unusually smooth
Totally not what it's supposed to be used for but, that would make some very unique handle scales for a couple of my knife projects.
Using this process would make some amazing looking bowling balls...
Would be a very expensive bowling ball
One blank would make 2 - 3 very cool handles for custom knives.
***** indeed they wood ")
Cool video man, had a bit of a 'fun with flags' vibe going ;) I will definitely be trying this.
Nice video - clear and informative. Nice work, my friend!Bob.
Pretty cool Dema, I had never seen this video of yours. I checked it out since you highlighted it in your year-end video.. Very cool, I may try some resin projects this year. Thanks!
Oh and this gave me an idea for some California buckeye burl wood I have in my shop!
Love the video!
Got two questions:
You use pressure, Can you use vacuum?
What is a good source for defective wood pieces?
the alumilite has a 7 minute working window before it starts to set up, and working with stabilizing wood I know vacuum creates bubbles for hours so it would not work, might be a good idea for a demo video. I get most of my worthless wood on woodbarter.com thanks for watching
I thought it was really weird that you turned the wingnuts anticlockwise to tighten them and thought you must have filmed this in reverse... then I looked at your tape measures and sure enough the writing on them was backwards... I'm very clever :)
ohhhhh yeah.
+DeansVideoClips lol good job :)
perfeito, trabalho com madeiras e está trabalhando com resina é muito bonito. Parabéns
Dema you do very nice work. I really enjoy your videos. I'm wondering, did you suspend the banksia in the resin? It seems to be totally covered with resin prior to trimming it on the table saw. I picked up a pressure pot at harbor freight the other day and I ordered some resin. I'm going to give it a try.
+GTLee9 Ah, thats a very good question and the answer is yes, i elevate the material off the bottom of the mold slightly to allow the resin to comletyly cover the material, i get the best cast this way. :)
Is this like stabilizing the wood?
Very cool video.
You could also take bog oak and black Powder. That would look pretty cool too, I think!
Very interesting. Like to see the call made as well.
SnapPunch Robert Already have a video for that ua-cam.com/video/HFSwT-w1284/v-deo.html
Thanks
I have made collectable fishing lures using this process. The cost of the materials and your time makes it almost a wash on profit but its a great hobby.
And keep your freaking body off the table saw as the blade is coasting down!
Thank you and thank you for the concern
Thank you to learn that way awesome set up and great teaching *Harbor tools **get pressure pot cheep for beginners Can you use any powder color in Epoxy Resin
those harbor freight scales are great! :)
You just convinced me to try making my own blanks.
+John Best goal of the video successful then :)
I'm a custom knife maker and I think these type of blanks would make fantastic knife handles.
I see some people use Vacuum rather than pressure, which is the best, I would expect vacuum as it removes moisture as well
Wow! That is amazing! Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you :)
looks like an awesome project
Ok, the minute I saw you turning the threads the wrong way I realized your video was flipped... And then I saw the keyboard. LOL, had me going for a brief moment though.. "Why the hell does he have left-handed threads on there?!"
Hello thanks for interesting video I have never seen these before. What are they used for? what is the mould made of and what are the colours and who produces them? Is the pressure tank to get the air out of the resin?
Graeme McLean These are blanks for game call when hunting. the mold is make of cutting board plastic, the colors are PerlX from michaels..
Have you ever experimented with making one with just pearlescent dust and no pigment, so it looks translucent and you could almost see the wood through it?
Yes I have, it looks awesome
Does it make a difference if you put the pot under 65 pounds of pressure or put it on a vacuum to ?? # of pressure. If the former, one doesn't have to buy a vacuum pump? Great video and very nice blanks.
Edwin Leach I found it better to put under pressure, there is not enough working time to use vacuum, by the time you try and get the air out, you will just have a foam cast on your hands
Ok thank you. I love your videos. I've learned so much. Keep them coming!!!!
Can you make a video on how to make the mold you used? Looks like cutting board material but how exactly are you joining the pieces? Thanks!
Kiko Sasha I have the same question
I like the shelf for the computer, good idea
Very nice door handles
Great Video. Thanks for making it. Question: What did you use to make your molds. I want to try this but am unsure what you used for molds. thanks
+Scott Weiner Thank you Scott, i have a link to the material in the video description, i also sell the molds premade for $25 each, i currently have 8 available.
+Dema's WoodShop Thank you. When I am ready I will reach out. I'm not sure of what size I want. The plan is to make these into a chess set. 8-)
Awesome, I have thought about making a waste wood chess set before also
+Dema's WoodShop Gonna be a bit. Am making some tankards right now but this will be my next project.
Dena, thanks for showing how its done, you would be a good teacher/instructor. Question for you, of the different casting materials out there which is the easiest to work with and less brittle for the Turner? If I were to make a pen and it fell of a table which casting material would break or crack before the other?
Frank Doyle alumilite is probably the best but you are also paying for it alot more than polyester resin.
*****
Cant get Alumalite here in the Netherlands so I'm envious :p but I had some PR penblanks I made in the summer and turned it down a few days back.... I have never had so much trouble with a penblank, it was super hard and brittle it would not tool without force, the skew was the best option but it was slooooow going... Epoxy works great as well but is more expensive and leaves long streamers that clog up the mandrel.
Hello very interesting have never seen this before here. Can you tell me what the blank blocks are used for because they are beautiful when polished. What is the mould made from? and what are the colours made from?. Is the pressure pot just to get all air our of the. Thanks *****
Thank you for sharing this educational video. Did you stabilize your "worthless wood" before you applied the resin? I can imagine stabilizing first contributes to the durability of the end product.
Misja Huizinga I stabilize after casting, it works out better for me :)
The answer to a question I've been pondering for quite some time. I bought a worthless blank, and it was really hard to turn because the wood was so soft and the resin very hard. It seems like stabilizing would help a little. It would also let me finish the piece with plastic polish instead of having to use CA on the wood.
just noticed everything reversed and is OK after time stamp 8:58 that is so KOOL!!!! How did you do that? Seriously that was interesting and I would like to do it too during a video I shall put up soon.... I loved the video regardless
Keith Stanley Haha, that was an accident, my gopro was set to mirror mode, i didnt bother to fix it in my video editing software..lol thanks for wathcing
It is beautiful and wonderful work, but I want to know the names of the materials that you put which are like oil
Good video.. Thank you! Do you have to use a pressure pot? What would happen if you didn't?
Thank you, check out this video on that question ua-cam.com/video/7IX9RvH5rxI/v-deo.html
I love the process
This might be a dumb question, but does the wood need to be stabilized before it gets cast, or does this process take care of that?
Also looks like it would be excellent for pen turning blanks.
Sure can
Exelente desde Puerto Rico. Very nice work
That's amazing. Do you know how well this stuff can handle being outdoors 24/7? Would it still be clear and durable?
Hi I'm from Argentina, I would like to know what material is the rectangular pan you use to place the resin does not stick,, Thank you for sharing your videos.
It's it plastic cutting board material. Thanks for watching :)
Nice video, I just think adding a timer at the bottom corner so we could see how many minutes into the mix/pour you are would be helpful.
Just curious, but, couldn't you sand and polish the wood and resin instead of spraying it with polyurethane? I'm aware that would be much more labor intensive, but, wouldn't that yield a better shine?
Yes you are right, spraying is just faster :)
Hi Dema, thanks for sharing your time and experience. Can you please recommend a good supplier for wood burl and spalted wood blanks not yet stabilized?
with this process is the wood permeated with the resin............thank you
What failed in the curing process? I saw you put a different "red" mold inside the cooker from the one you took out of it. Did you dispose it for some reason?
I am asking because the one you put in the cooker was stained on one side but the one you took out was clean...
I have never done wood blanks before, but from other experiences, resin usually needs degassing before pouring since there are loads of air mixed in when you stir.
not sure really, coz i've never used alumilite resin before
Yes that's the normal process, you mix then degass but since alumilite has a 7 minute working window there is not one to degas so I depend on the pressure to compress the bubbles small enough that they are invisible to the eye
fantastic work. very impressed.
Thanks for the video I'm supper exited to do some of them...
+Cristina Alfaro Thank you Cristina :)
Living the American Dream!
I couldn't find if I can use this proceedings with any wood. Can I use it for olive wood, ebony, walnuts or wood like those? the result will be the same? thx for sharing, it is very helpfull this video!
george provatidis I think the same rule applies as stabilizing, if there is moisture or oil, it will fail
***** thx! so it cant be on olive wood.. its ok! :-)
Very Good! You explain everything well!!
Great video!
I am going to get into this and appreciate you sharing this method.
I see a lot of possibilities. Have you ever figured your cost per unit?
I don’t really do this on a production scale, so figuring out the cost would not be that hard. A 16# kit of alumilite costs $160 without shipping. Since I measure everything in oz for casting, take 16# convert to 256 oz.. then you take the $160 divide by 256 and comes out to .62. A cast call blank uses around 6oz so that’s $3.72 cost just for the resin, then you add the cost of the wood and your time…
idk how I got here but I think these would look great as a table or something like that kinda nature
+dyllenger lol
***** they would if like cut them in thin slabs an glue them theyd look awesome
you are so talented
