      I can't answer for the other person, but I ended up here when I saw the link on the right hand side. I was looking for general woodworking tips and tricks so I can get better at woodworking. I saw the contrasting colors and decided to watch. I am always looking for interesting things to do with wood for my projects, to add color and contrast. Even if I don't hunt, I can still appreciate the fact that you shared some knowledge that I can use in other ways. Besides, I do like taking pictures of animals. I could possibly use a call to get some closer shots. Thanks for the video.

    Very interesting video. One thing though is to ask how 'stabilized' the actual wood is. When we take punk wood blanks, we saturate them under vacuum with resin. I suspect that there is very little actual penetration of the wood by the resin with 60psi. Pressure really only eliminates bubbles in the resin. After the set time, I think you can safely relieve the pressure in your pot. That will allow you to increase production.

    thanks for the informative video. Here's a couple of things I would do:
    1. I'd definitely use a sled when trimming the blanks. It would be much safer and probably give better results.
    2. I'd drill a board to hold the colorants. The small vials might be easy to lose track of and upset while mixing.
    3. I'd set a timer for mixing, at least until I'd done the procedure several times.
    Why do you use pressure instead of vacuum in the pot? I think that a vacuum might be better for de-airing small bubbles.
    Oh, and why is the video mirror-imaged?

    I noticed you switched the camera view horizontally in this video. You were twisting the lids on backwards, the wing nuts on the pressure pot too, and the clock was rotating counter clockwise LOL. Then in the second half of the video it was turned back around. Great video, very detailed.

    • @skipsargent

      +Allannvsj A pressure pot is highly recommended, it crushes out any air bubbles. Technically you can do it without the pot but Alumilite is expensive to waste.

      instead of positive pressure, why not a vacuum. I've used vacuum to help stabilize wood. A vacuum will suck the air bubbles out.

    • @davidhampton6502
      @davidhampton6502 6 років тому

      A vacuum will not draw the air bubbles out fast enough. The allumilite will harden way before the bubbles are gone.

    Funny, i am not a killing hunter so my first thought was: He took something useless and transformed it to something more useless. But thhen i thought: u can CALL ANIMALS with it. You don't need to kill them like most hunters would do. And then i think: Animal call-ewrrrs made of plastic and can be found everywhere, very cheap and effortlessss! Then what drives him to do something like that? And then it hit me: You create something! That makes you a little God that moment. Keep up the ergo-therapy. I am very jealus of you, you have a creative hobby i wish i find one myself. I hope you always find time to excercise your art.

    Dena, thanks for showing how its done, you would be a good teacher/instructor. Question for you, of the different casting materials out there which is the easiest to work with and less brittle for the Turner? If I were to make a pen and it fell of a table which casting material would break or crack before the other?

    • @DemasShopforEverything
      @DemasShopforEverything  9 років тому

      Frank Doyle alumilite is probably the best but you are also paying for it alot more than polyester resin.

      Cant get Alumalite here in the Netherlands so I'm envious :p but I had some PR penblanks I made in the summer and turned it down a few days back.... I have never had so much trouble with a penblank, it was super hard and brittle it would not tool without force, the skew was the best option but it was slooooow going... Epoxy works great as well but is more expensive and leaves long streamers that clog up the mandrel.

      Hello very interesting have never seen this before here. Can you tell me what the blank blocks are used for because they are beautiful when polished. What is the mould made from? and what are the colours made from?. Is the pressure pot just to get all air our of the. Thanks *****

    Thank you for sharing this educational video. Did you stabilize your "worthless wood" before you applied the resin? I can imagine stabilizing first contributes to the durability of the end product.

    • @DemasShopforEverything
      @DemasShopforEverything  9 років тому

      Misja Huizinga I stabilize after casting, it works out better for me :)

      The answer to a question I've been pondering for quite some time. I bought a worthless blank, and it was really hard to turn because the wood was so soft and the resin very hard. It seems like stabilizing would help a little. It would also let me finish the piece with plastic polish instead of having to use CA on the wood.

    This might be a dumb question, but does the wood need to be stabilized before it gets cast, or does this process take care of that?

    Just curious, but, couldn't you sand and polish the wood and resin instead of spraying it with polyurethane? I'm aware that would be much more labor intensive, but, wouldn't that yield a better shine?

    What failed in the curing process? I saw you put a different "red" mold inside the cooker from the one you took out of it. Did you dispose it for some reason?
    I am asking because the one you put in the cooker was stained on one side but the one you took out was clean...

  • @ASH7388
    @ASH7388 8 років тому

    I have never done wood blanks before, but from other experiences, resin usually needs degassing before pouring since there are loads of air mixed in when you stir.
    not sure really, coz i've never used alumilite resin before

    • @DemasShopforEverything
      @DemasShopforEverything  8 років тому

      Yes that's the normal process, you mix then degass but since alumilite has a 7 minute working window there is not one to degas so I depend on the pressure to compress the bubbles small enough that they are invisible to the eye

    I am going to get into this and appreciate you sharing this method.
    I see a lot of possibilities. Have you ever figured your cost per unit?

    • @DemasShopforEverything
      @DemasShopforEverything  10 років тому +2

      I don’t really do this on a production scale, so figuring out the cost would not be that hard. A 16# kit of alumilite costs $160 without shipping. Since I measure everything in oz for casting, take 16# convert to 256 oz.. then you take the $160 divide by 256 and comes out to .62. A cast call blank uses around 6oz so that’s $3.72 cost just for the resin, then you add the cost of the wood and your time…
