Don't haul on the rope, don't climb up the mast - telling how a ship was maintained in the old days and that they don’t do that anymore.

Anyone that has experienced even one of those getting lost and the sail flapping in the breeze would understand the severe, almost drunken, lurching motion imparted to the ship.
