Fun fact, a lot of european medieval artists (monks mainly) had no idea what a lion properly looked like. This got better after the crusades and more christian influence was present in North Africa, but there are many examples of lions being drawn strangely and in a "dog-like" manner, probably explains your confusion with the white lion... just a clergical artist who was described that a lion "looks like a big dog with fur around it's head" :D
Thanks man , really interesting
Not like swedish found a fucking lion in prague after conquring it.
@@redexbruh255 That was few centuries after crusades. During 30 years war. About 1648 or so. What he was confused by was 12th century picture.
Fun fact: Originally the lion was drawn with its tail in between its hind legs, but it came under heavy ridicule, as people said it looked like a monkey (which I can’t disagree with).

3:09 there's a legend about it. King named Bruncvík was on a world tour and he saved lion from dragon. Then the lion traveled faithfully by his side and fought with him in many battles. When they came home, Bruncvík had paint the lion in his coat of arms.
The lion has two tails, because in some battle somebody cut his tail in two.
And theres also something about it in Dalimils Cronicle... Saying its from Frederick Barbarosa given to Vladislav I. (which is more likely then whole Bruncvik myth...)

I love Czechia! The land of the binge beer drinkers haha
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪
Yes and We love ice hockey and Belgium Football
"The land of the binge beer drinkers".... not exactly 'binge drinkers'- I did spend six months in Belgium, and I can assure you 'binge' aspect is nearly nonexistent compared to Belgium..... if you see 'binge drinkers' in CZ, they will most probably be Belgian, Brit tourists etc.;).... we drink beer a lot, but we just not have that 'binge drinking' aspect in our culture;)
@@letecmig Sorry, Czechs still win when it comes to consumption of beer per capita (worldwide), Belgium is 27th. 'Czech' the statistics.
@@morroghaiky6580 Please THINK ;) my comment was about use of term 'binge drinking'., not overall consumption... as you should know, "binge drinking" means concentrating your consumption into short periods of time - meaning drink yourself to oblivion WHEN you drink.(regardless whether you drink often or rarely)
So if person A does 15 half liters of beer once a week, then person A is a 'binge drinker'
When person B does two half liters of beer every day, then Person B has same consumption as Person A, but Person B is not 'binge drinking'- hope you get what I mean;)
Binge drinking is just not the culture here. Regular consumption of beer is. There is a difference between the two;)
P.S. As I wrote , I spent some time in Belgium(exchange student), and that culture of 'let's get really drunk when we go out' kind of surprised me coming from the CZ. Another interesting aspect of Belgium's drinking culture i noticed (at least among students) is 'getting ready' before going clubbing by drinking at home (cheaper supermarket alcohol as compared to more pricey alcohol in clubs/pubs)- not done here either
@@letecmig Except the person B has more than double consumption of beer through the week than person A. But point taken.

1:00 actually there was a Czech state before, it was called Great Moravia (Veľká Morava) and it concurred Slovakia, parts of Poland, today Hungary and more to the south, but I’m not sure how much, but then Hungarians came from the east and win against Great Moravia, Slovakia became a part of Hungary and the duchy of Bohemia was created.
Wrong, it was not a czech state. It was moravian, what was different tribe, then czechs. Also territorial extent was much smaller, basically it was today Moravia, western and central Slovakia and small parts of Austria and northern Hungary. Other territories were just paying tribute and was not part of Great Moravis (well, Svatopluk was duke of Bohemia for very short time).
Well I’m not an expert, you can be right, but I googled Veľká Morava after you wrote this comment and at its peak it was pretty much what I was saying, but yeah I don’t understand it that well, so I won’t play the smart one here
@@thealphasam7350 Octopus Syd might be butthurt Moravian :D. Ofc Great Morava was czech state, by definition of Czech ppl now. Czech, Moravian, Slovakian and Sorbs are tribes that in time of creation of Great Morava were culturaly in union (Tribes leaders saw themselfs as one Tribe union and with christianity later it translated into full cultural union where only subtle differeces persist.) Slovaks were then cut from it by Hungarians and Sorbs by Germans and where asimilited into respective culture. Sorbs more then Slovaks. There is another issue with Polish and Silesian tribes, but its for longer explanation.

Just to add: Moravia literally wasn't made by Czech Kingdom or somehow. It was a state back in the 9th century but didn't have a long reign as in 906 the state was destroyed by Hungarian tribes. The German and Bohemian Kingdom had lots of work to defend them but they made it in the year 955? in the battle of the river Lech. But this story is for a longer time.

That was so cool, lot of people doesn't know about us. You really surprised me when you desided to do somethink like that about Czech Republic! Teachers will now use your video in the school of english and learn our children in english language about our country. You made a great material.
The history of the lion rampant is a bit murky. According to legend (meaning the Chronicle of so-called Dalimil) it was awarded to King Vladislav I. by Frederick Barbarosa as a reward for bravery in the Italian campaign, and the split tail was an "upgrade" for yet more battle honours.
In reality this does not seem to have been the case. This is related to one mistake you made about the status of Moravia; it used to be an independent state (Great Moravia) but was destroyed by Hungarians, leaving only its former dependency (Bohemia) intact. Bohemians were later able to reconquer Moravia around 1000AD and it has always been an integral part of the Czech state (though it was under foreign occupation for a few brief periods). During this time it usually served as an appanage for the heir apparent (much like the Principality of Wales, although the Přemyslid heir would actually rule in Moravia).
The promotion to a Margravy was an attempt by Barbarosa to split the Czech state in two by granting sort-of independence to the Moravian prince Konrád Ota. But Konrád ultimately didn't bite, made up with prince Bedřich of Bohemia and they affirmed the indivisibility of the realm and permanent union between Bohemia and Moravia.
Getting around to the coat of arms itself, a few decades later Moravia was held as an appanage by Přemysl Otakar II., who after he became king is the wirst ruler to have used the split-tail lion rampant as his coat of arms. Historians today believe that a simple lion rampant was orignally the coat of arms of Moravia that Přemysl was using as a prince, and he simply kept it when he succeeded his father Václav, adding the crown to symbolise his royal title and split tail to signify him being the ruler of two indivisible lands. They then had to come up with a new coat of arms for Moravia (the current one), but nobody seems to know where that came from.
Lots more detail on this here: chronicaboemorum.com/
0:45 the blue triangle is from side to a one half

C'mon, we fought for our republic in 1918, 1938, 1968, 1989 and many people died for it, so it is not so difficult to say CZECH REPUBLIC instead of stupid czechia.
BTW., what we gave to the world: word ROBOT, word PISTOL, hedgehogs agains tanks, machinegun BREN, cars Škoda and Tatra, Pilsner Urquell, shoes Bata etc, etc, etc.
No. Paradoxically, the years you mentioned there was no Czech Republic. We had Czechoslovakia (which is also a shortcut) and at the same time part of the country was Czechia. So you post is entirely false.
Thanks for this video! Hi from Czech! 🇨🇿
Great video!
Very good video. Thanks for it.
Cool vid :) And the pronounciation wasn't that bad :D
I have to admit I was hoping you would mention the greater coat of arms of the first republic (also used on the presidential flag at the time) it looked similiar to the one you used, so called middle coat of arms, but it had three more arms on it for other, smaller regions, and it was held by two lions on the sides with our national motto "truth prevails" underneath it... Personally that's my favourite one :)
Also, the coat of arms for the "Lands of the Bohemian Crown" (aka lands traditionally ruled by the king of bohemia) was pretty cool :)
And finally, as for the lion, according to one legend I heard, from my history teacher I think, was that the lion was supposed to be king Přemysl Otakar I. A very powerful king in his time, and the tails were supposed to represent the pope and the emperor, following his will. Due to his impressive military power, he was able to influence the imperial politics and papal opinion enough for the King of Bohemia be proclaimed a hereditary title to be passed on to his descendants as well as get some other cool perks such as being excused from "Reichstag" (basically parliament) unless it was close to czech lands... If the Emperor decided to hold the Reichstag in Hamburg for example, czech kings didn't have to come, unless they wanted to. (More in the Golden Bule of Sicily issued in 1212) This was a pretty big deal, since there were no other kings in the HRE. Technically the emperor was a "king of the germans" however this was mainly a "temporary" title for the emperor to use before his coronation as an emperor, which was supposed to be performed by the Pope himself... And even for the rest of HREs history, there really weren't other kings in HRE. Austria was an Archduchy, so basically like a half step from duchy to kingdom, and Prussia was outside imperial borders so the kings were called "kings in prussia" instead of "kings of prussia".
Sorry I kind of started rambling a long and boring history lesson... If you read this entire comment, kudos to you :)

It is so difficult :-( I think that less than 1% of czech population knows this story. But you did very good job!
With "story" you mean our history? Unless you didn't pay any attention in history classes at school pretty much everybody knows our history.

Thanks for making our flag -From Czechia
Well I am from Czechia and few of the mentioned things I did not even know! So thanks for telling me more 'bout the flag of my own country :DDD

We have Lion because it's from old legend(And sorry for my english)
Yes, one king, Bruncvík, had a lion friend.
A angličtina je v pohodě
Brunclík
I really appriciate the music, Fučík isnt much known, still one of our best composers
Thanks for this video :)
The blue triangle was added in 1920 to represent Slovakia, totally not Moravia.
@@acceleratedsloth True but officialy blue triangle was added bcs of Slovakia
Nechcete mluvit česky :-D
@ No, why ?
You know, i'm from Slovakia and i like Czechia cuz they're our brother's and sister's .. but the flag is still "stolen" if you don't know what do i mean : it's illegal to use flag that had the state that was the same like Czechoslovakia.. idk how to say it in english.. like we in slovakia had to "make" our slovakia flag .. same colours as czech flag but with our crosswise (krížom) and also with 3 hills.. as i said i love czech :p just saying some facts that many people don't know :) Prosím nezabite ma :p mám vás rád ako bratov..

Great Video!
I m from the CZECH REPUBLIC jako důkaz je my 12 stačí vám to. Pro mě je čeština lehká protože jsem se v Česku narodil
Jses z ceska a nedokazes ani spravne napsat zajmeno 'mi'
No offense 😉
0:48 - that's not today flag, that's first republic flag :-D today flag has top of the blue triangle exactly in 1/2 of flag
Actually according to vlast.cz/vyvoj-ceske-vlajky/ it was altered even before formal acceptance in 1920. It was only the original winning draft where the triangle reached only to 1/3 of the length.
Pravda vítězí, i když na čas poražena bývá... :) Hello from Czech Republic and tnx a lot for this educative video. We are small state with big people.

Actually, The Czech Kingdom was part of Austrian Empire since 1526.

It's a two tailed lion!!!
I see it now! It's just that old painting sort of didn't look like a lion
@@General.Knowledge Yeah, that painter was kinda a flop 😂 thanks for answering. And don't worry with the pronunciation of Czechia... It makes a 'ch' sound as in chair, the english spelling derives from the polish one, where a 'cz' makes a ch sound... And yeah, I know it's messy the house. The question is... Why does this lion have 2 tails?
I mean... Those people never saw lions in real life
@@tomasvrabec1845 maybe, but since it's a big cat, they could have imagined it better than a dog 😂
There was a previous lion design with only one tail and the tail was in between the legs and going in front of the lion. Apparently people just laughed at it, or so I herard. I don´t know if it is true or something entierly made up.
