There are some other possible interpretations of the colours as well, besides the standard "white = purity and freedom, green = nature and fertility of the land, red = blood of the fallen heroes". One theory, for example, links it with the Bulgarian Garibaldines and the influence of the Italian revolutionary movement on our own, particularly on Georgi Rakovski and the two Bulgarian Legions he created in Serbia. Another possible view is the representation of the three main regions of Bulgaria - Moesia (modern Northern Bulgaria, the first to be freed from the Ottomans), Thrace (Southern Bulgaria, with its fertile fields) and Macedonia (which was largely left out of Bulgaria and became the main reason for all the 20th century wars we took part in). This three-region division is also quite well illustrated by a couple of pictures by Nikolay Pavlovich from those times and is also another interpretation for the three lions in our coat of arms (while the three lions in the medieval CoA versions would supposedly represent the "three Bulgarias" from the late 14th c., centred around Tarnovo, Vidin and Karvuna). Of course, a more "vulgar" (pardon the pun) modern interpretation of the tricolour could be a parallel with our famous Shopska salad and its main ingredients - the white Bulgarian sirene/cheese, the cucumbers (green) and the tomatoes (red). Needless to say, that's definitely not very idealistic, though some people might still find it patriotic enough.

These colours can be seen in every indo-european nation like kelts, Iranians and many others. These colours are far older than the Roman empire.

"United We Stand Strong" was stamped on the coins of the Kingdom of Bulgaria after 1878, after the liberation from the Ottoman Empire. The Cyrillic alphabet (30) is much more extensive than the Latin alphabet (26), hence it's understandable some letters can't be interpreted literally. Such letters, for example, are я, ъ, ч, й, ш, щ, ь, ц, ж, ю (although some can be depicted with multiple Latin letters and do the job fine: ш sh, ч ch, etc). Nevertheless, the same applies vice versa: w and x don't have an exact match in the Cyrillic alphabet.

Great video, incredibly correct historically, it is truly amazing that a foreigner can make such a historically accurate video for a foreign country. Thank you!
Great job! Greetings from Bulgaria! Another popular interpretation of the colours is that they represent the three main historical areas of Bulgaria - Moesia (white), Thrace (green), and Macedonia (red). No offence fellow Macedonian and Greek neighbours ;) Less known, but intriguing hypothesis of the origins of the tricolour, is that it's been influenced by the Italian flag. Many Bulgarian revolutionaries, most well known amongst them is Kapitan Petko Voyvoda, fought alongside Guiseppe Garibaldi, and later took part in the Bulgarian uprisings against Ottoman rule. It is thought by some that they might have influenced the symbolics of some of the self-organised resistance groups. There was great variety of revolutionary flags, most often representing a standing lion on green, or more rarely red background. The flag of the Stara Zagora uprising from 1875 was white-green-red and it is thought that the official national flag is modelled after it. No matter the true origin, it seems that those colours were traditional since the official flag was quickly accepted as a symbol by all Bulgarians within and outside the Principality's borders.
Congratulations! I am impressed! You are very well informed about our long history and definitely you have made an extensive research in order to do this video. Once again respect!

Generally the green symbolizes the Bulgarian nature and freedom. Thank you for the great video and the way you have honoured our history and the respectful way you have presented the information!

Just for information the 3 colour comes from the 3 main regions 1 white Мизия 2 Green Тракия 3 Red Македония Other than that you did great job with the history part even at some points better than we were tough in school
I'm sayin'!!!!! That's the only reason why UA-cam suggested it in my home screen...hahahahaha It's extra cute how I am actually Bulgarian. (to clarify, UA-cam algorithm suggested the Serbian flag video first...)
I am sure that the colors white, green and red have no slavic roots. Actually slavic nations often use Pan-Slavic colors: white, blue and red. The example is Russia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Czech republic. In the other hand white green and red are the colors related to Giuseppe Garibaldi used in Italy, Bulgaria and Hungary
As Bulgarian good job mate very nice history lesson. As for the flags the first flag used even in old great Bulgaria was the horse tail you can even see it on your pictures for Khan kubrat
There is an inaccuracy in the video. At the Battle of Nicopolis, the Turks were not alone against the Crusade. Our Serbian "brothers" on the Turkish side are participating in the battle. In fact, the decisive attack that turned the battle came from the Serbian heavy cavalry. They are the most loyal ally of the Ottomans, not only at Nikopol but also at Rovine (where Krali Marko was killed) and at Ankara, where Tamerlane defeated the Ottomans and captured Bayezid. They are the only ones among the Balkan peoples who did not participate in the campaign of Vladislav Varnenchik.
They way we learned it in school the one who made the choice was Georgi Rakovski. He was the leading Bulgarian revolutionary during the preparations for the uprising. He was the one who led the First Bulgarian Legion and the Second Bulgarian Legion. The color scheme of the flags of both legions was red, white and green. What's important here is that Rakovski had experience fighting in uprisings because he fought alongside Garibaldi in the Crimean war. So when the time came for the revolutionaries to choose a flag for the First Bulgarian Legion, he suggested the Italian color scheme as a nod to his friend Garibaldi, but with the pan-Slavic bands, instead of the stripes. I have no idea whether this is historically factual, but that's what we learned. Wikipedia doesn't say anything about that story. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarian_Legion

When we stopped the Arabic armies from conquering Europe!
i feel a bit attacked but at the same time not because im from bulgaria but im arabic
@@lee-py1bj You shouldn't, you're just of Arabic ancestory. Don't feel bad for something your grand grand grand father's did. It could've possibly not even been your empire at the time. You know what I mean, I love all races and I've been to turkey they're such lovely people and I think we should leave history in history but it shall never be forgotten

Thank you for doing this! Greetings from Bulgaria 🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬
Really good video i wait for it 1 year thanks for making it!!!
When kids we are told the symbolics of our flag, but just the basics.
Which are:
White-Reminding us of the pureness of freedom and the infinity of spirit
Red-Reminding us to never forget about the sacrifice our brothers and sisters made while fighting for our country
Green-For our beautiful mountains, forests and mother natute
Sooo seeing someone making so much effort to just know what those colors mean in depth was really nice and interesting. Amazing video💟💚❤️
Thank God bro I was waiting on this one
It's so cool how you present our county with these drawings and search for that many information about us
Realy respect your work!
Благодаря! Thank you!
It's nice to hear about everything I heard in history lesson 3 years ago. Здрасти на всички българи🇧🇬

Rome, Atene and Sofia are the oldest capitals of Europe.
That was a really really accurate video. You've put great work into it and you deserve more recognition and respect for your content. You've earned a subscriber, if that means something to you.
Very creative idea for a series and you make it interesting.
Amazing recap of the history of our flags! Well done.
Very good channel. Greetings from Brazil. Saudações lusitanas!
thank you for taking the time to talk about a small country like ours I think every Bulgarian who looks at you will be very grateful. I wish you all the best.
Amazing video dude! You're quite good at presenting corect information! :) I just wanna add about the green part of the flag. It may come from the first bulgarian revolutionary cometee created in Belgrade (circa 1830) which did use green/white/red horizontal tricolor flag. I'm of course not sure just my theory :)
Oh my gosh I'm so impressed of how good you explained our history! I'm probably excited because not many people know about our country and I would understand that if it was like boring or something like that but our history is AMAZYNG! Like we've been a part of the Osman empire for 5 CENTURIES and we're still here! Also your pronunciation was pretty wrong but not that bad ;)
Please guys this video is too good to have its comments spammed with various discussions about the origin of the bulgars
Bulgars are turkic peoples.

Very good job! As far as my knowledge goes, you were very accurate in everything you showed in the video. Starting with Kubrat in 632 means you read the latest history books, which means that you really prepared for this. Brilliant work! Thank you!
How long have I waited

Just for information the 3 colour comes from the 3 main regions
1 white Мизия
2 Green Тракия
3 Red Македония
Other than that you did great job with the history part even at some points better than we were tough in school

I'm sayin'!!!!! That's the only reason why UA-cam suggested it in my home screen...hahahahaha It's extra cute how I am actually Bulgarian. (to clarify, UA-cam algorithm suggested the Serbian flag video first...)
Greetings from Bulgaria!
Thank you!
Hi I am from Bulgaria
Hey there, I'm a bulgarian student and I have to say this is our nationality, and honestly great work on the video and keep up the good work.
Fantastic video I really enjoyed it and find it very useful. Thank you!
The blue color is for the amazing education system.
Exactly, there's no blue color on the flag.
at least we can manage the economy ;)
The orange stands for our great economy and politicians... oh wait
The yellow stands for the non corruption system
The black stands for military strength.
loving the Bulgarian Anthem in the background
Greetings from your northern neighbours!
