I love this! I started derby about 2 months ago and I am currently working on improving my crossovers. This is the best and most enthusiastic explanation I have heard. Thank You!
By just dropping your left hip when you reach the apex of the turn, you will shift all of your weight and be able to really dig in with that left foot. A long track speed skating tip. I 've done this on the ice and its really made me much more confident when going through the turns. Works well on rollerskates too :)
I was just practicing cross-over steps in my kitchen and in my head I could hear your voice "Bend your knees, get MAXIMUM power when you extend'. Definite improvement. Thank you. I'll be watching this again (and again and again)
As a rookie skater (who has NEVER been on skates before I started derby a few months ago) this was so incredibly helpful :') Thank you. I'm having the hardest time doing crossovers, but this has set me on the right path to my "27 in 5"
This is great. There's not enough emphasis on using the left leg when crossovers are taught by derby leagues- they just say to lift the right foot over the left, then push it out. Leaning in really helps to get that left leg moving- also literally look 45 degrees towards the centre- you'll naturally head that way and push towards that way.
I love your energy! And your tips made it really easy to understand. I've been struggling with my crossovers for a while. I think I'm ready to try this!
Thank you so much for this video. As the Boot Camp / Rec League Coach for the Silicon Valley Roller Girls, I've shared this about a million times so far. It's chock full of really, really important information - but it's also so funny!!! Thanks for making this available for us all.
This is awesome. I have a lot of trouble trying to communicate to our new girls exactly how to get more power from crossovers (and why) but this nails it!
A tiny change that took 2 seconds off my mediocre 10-lap time (I'm a ref) was to simply *delay* straightening my left leg. That's it. Each stroke, I just told myself: Wait, don't straighten, wait, ok, NOW! After a few practices like that, it became habit, and I'm now getting power out of both legs.
thank you thank you thank you....my left leg is like dead weight and doing my laps for assesments i run just shy of them because my leg isn't strong enough to help me finish....this will help me sooooooooooooooo much!!!!
This was awesome.. not only useful but entertaining... I am fresh meat and always being told to work my cross overs... I got the cross over down just the using the muscles part isn't there ...YET! thank you
One clarification: In a perfect situation your left leg won't touch the ground until it has all of your weight on it, so there is no waiting to extend, only waiting to finally allow it to make contact with the floor.
Don't worry, you don't need to strengthen it - you just need to use it. The exercises (step ups and wall pushing) are all about experiencing the feeling that you want to try to achieve when crossing over. Does this make sense?
Absolutely! Don't straighten the leg until it has your weight on it. If you extend before it has any weight on it then the leg isn't doing any work and you're not actually using it.
There’s a skate country where it’s like an ice rink but for roller skating around a circle but I see everyone around be doing crossovers and going fast while I still have boulders in my skates so yeah I’ve tried to learn but I fail all the time and give up:/
Whatever long thing I found lying around the Rat's Nest. We have quite a few crutches so I used that, but much better would be a piece of rope as it gives a longer distance between the puller and the dead weight. Naomi/Neutrino
Just a note to say that six years later and I'm still coming to this video as one of the first to share with freshmeat / bootcampers! Thanks!
Dude, I just started derby a year ago. This is the best explanation of HOW to skate crossovers. What a difference, thanks!

You're insane but I've had my team watch your video 87.5 times. :)
I have never laughed while someone explained crossovers - YES!
Your advice that crossovers are like climbing a mountain sideways is spot on. Kept that in mind today as I practiced, and I got better!
Amazeballs! Thanks Neutrino!!!! This went viral through the Montreal League...
So that's whatcha do with Mr. Lefty.
Naomi, this is great. Made me laugh out loud repeatedly and some great technique tips in there too. Loving your "YES!"
Is that Trish Alexander? Oh my, the two legends of skating together 😍
I have shared this with my league's Fresh Meat and just about every derby skater I know. Thank you so much!

This was so good! I have watch so many videos to improve my crossovers. Entertaining and informative. MORE!

THANK YOU! I have been struggling with crossovers for 3 seasons now. This really helps.

Thank You SOOOO much for this OUTSTANDING video! We shared it with our derby team here in Hawaii! Love it so much! Keep 'em coming!
The most helpful and entertaining crossover video I've even seen. Thank you!
All I can say is... THANK YOU!! I just saw the light haha, it was very helpful and AWESOME!!
My left leg needed some exercises but I didn't know what could do! Now I know! Thanx so much!
I love this video. It's the best for introducing our fresh meat to refined crossover technique. Thanks Neutrino!
Love this! Really struggling with these right now and you've highlighted the flaws in my technique! Thank you!
I like your way of teaching crossovers.....kewl!
That unmoveable wall is a b**ch! Awesome video (and hilarious) - thanks!!
Pure gold, even today.
AH! THANK YOU for making crossovers make sense!
This is awesome. I have a lot of trouble trying to communicate to our new girls exactly how to get more power from crossovers (and why) but this nails it!
like most people, I love this!! makes much more sense now! thank you!!
Agree. This is really a brilliant video. Useful and pretty damn hilarious. Thanks.
Great demonstration!
I've just learned to do crossovers. That is cross over my right foot, but not really gaining much speed. I'll try your methods!

This video was both helpful and entertaining to watch. I really want to try the dead weight thing at practice :-)
This was brill! Easily the best cross-overs video that I've seen, thank you :D
This is so going on the "watch this!"-List for our fresh meat.
This is absolute UA-cam gold.
Best tutorial i have watched, hands down hilarious!
Excellent tips. I'm going to try these.

Finally, the real deal on crossovers!
Absolutely fantastic!
I love this! I really have to strengthen my left leg because it is not my dominant leg so 27/5 is pretty painful.
haha I so crossover like there's a stone in my shoe!! awesome video :) thX
Hilarious! Perfectly done. ☆☆☆☆☆

I love this vid so much!
Ouch, and I thought I already knew how to do crossover (on rollerblades)... after watching this I'm unsettled and scared.
so, this was perfect.
Don't worry, you don't need to strengthen it - you just need to use it. The exercises (step ups and wall pushing) are all about experiencing the feeling that you want to try to achieve when crossing over. Does this make sense?

What a great video. You really made me laugh. I'm subscribed! :)
awesome this one was very helpful
this is awesome. entertaining and good info. more please.

Wow, she's intense!
Good stuff!
You are such a good sport for being the 'dead' weight:)
thank you so much, beautiful, this video serves me much :)))
this is so helpful! thank you so much
How do you get over the feeling that its wrong?
My thought exactly!
thanks!! for the help.
Btw has the wall moved at all yet?
What a clown, I love it.
Haha I love this! :D
what type of materials were used for the crossover drills with Trish? what were y'all using to stay connected?
It looked like a crutch to me in the first drill. In the second, she was holding her hand.
Whatever long thing I found lying around the Rat's Nest. We have quite a few crutches so I used that, but much better would be a piece of rope as it gives a longer distance between the puller and the dead weight.
Naomi/Neutrino
Looked like a piece of a hockey stick to me. I'm going to try this out using resistance bands.
Love!
Omg love this so much ty
Commence derby crush.
Did someone already tell you that you are disturbed ? :D Chuck Norris can move the wall while crossing over
FUCK YEAH!
D-bomb would have moved that wall
my mom is friends with her
Naomi Grigg skates for Rat City?! I feel uninformed.
I'm overseas in Italy for the time being, returning stateside soon.
