Great interview. Thought you handled the situation very respectfully, without prying for more information making things uncomfortable with former teammates.

Who’s Here after Gordon’s 2022 ADCC Final Win ?
meeeee
Yep
Before it
I suspect that the team name "B Team" may come from a direct quote of the shit Gordon Ryan said towards the other DDS members during the arguments that led to the split.
That's pretty brilliant, hadn't thought of that...hmmm
it's true tho, what has anyone on that team won? Nothing, as in no major comps. Gordon is a 3x ADCC champ. And when Nicky Rod got a silver it was so boring compared to how GR wins. Also the way he said Gordon was too mentally weak to train is just mind blowing, in Danahers own words he said pre-split the rest of the team needs to adopt the same mindset of GR.
@@stephensarai1131 There is absolutely no doubt that, as of this moment, GR is the GOAT. Everyone knows it, especially his training partners, but you don't say things like that to your brothers even when you're angry. So it would be fair to say that there are serious questions about whether GR is a good team leader and teammate.
@@LionAndALamb in the end MMA/BJJ is an individual sport. The only thing that should matter to Gordon, is Gordon, bc Nicky says it himself, his whole goal was to beat Gordon from the jump. Considering Nicky’s style, Gordon is going to run right through him
@@jacobwilson7030 The reality is that none of us know what it takes to become the best BJJ competitor of all times, but many of us understand a great deal about leadership and team building from other sports as well as business experiences. Gordon would not have become the athlete he is today without help from a great leader in JD, and help from elite teammates. Iron sharpens iron and so forth. I always thought that Gordon's arrogant rudeness was a heal turn for marketing purposes, but the split of DDS suggests that Gordon might just be a shitty person in real life. Will the split benefit either side? Who knows.
Funny to revisit this video now. If you pay attention to some of the subtle details of what Nick says you can see a flaw with the way they were thinking. They had personal issues but the decision seems to be that we don’t need a good coach to continue to improve. And now they went and started their own deal where they are the best guys in the room, which is what he said he tried to avoid on his come up.
Yep, in light on the John Danaher interview on the Lex Freidman Podcast they didn't see it as they weren't originals and certainly didn't respect Danaher's contributions. Gordon's ego might have seemed poisonous, but those second place trophies and first round knockouts will sting much more!
Well said!

does anyone know if nicky rod os mexcan ,cuban or puerto rican?
@@natyongidk man B teams doing pretty good 🤙
hey, I was a big fan of human weapon. You and Bill traveling around the world learning martial arts really got me out of my shell and doing something similar. I liked the whole idea of learning a culture and it's history through martial arts. I ended up going to China and trained in Shaolin, a few years later I trained stayed at a gym in Thailand to train in muay thai. It was great to document it as well. Felt like I was living my best life.
I thought that was Josh Thompson.
Came for Nicky, staying for Jason. Great interview!
Wow, that meant a lot to me! Appreciate it!!!
Great interviewer, he’s not instigating or taking Nicky’s implication in a bad way.
This interview locked down my sub. Solid
It is pretty nuts what he’s accomplished with Danahers help and the team. There’s plenty of good athletes that can’t do what he’s done
Yup - nothing but respect for him. Like him or not - he's been beating top shelf guys for a minute. His ceiling is going to be sky high.
I think there are always two sides to a story. Let’s hear Gordon speak on it
When nick said "we arent bringing in people to make them better themselves. We bringing people in to help us train harder." DIFFERENT. I like that shit. 👏🏻
I feel this is the big difference with New Wave and B Team. John wants to open a school and already has two athletes to train to the pinnacle of BJJ and MMA. The B team are still reaching the top and want competition prep 24/7
I liked that as well.
hI wALKER. I don't understand how this is so precious? Is he saying our guest's focus is on his competitive edge instead of training others? This isn't some new thinking among sports teams. 😐 CHEERS.

Why does everyone sound surprised like someone is a phenom when they come into jiujitsu with 12 plus years of grappling at a high level. He’s basically starting as a solid blue or purple belt.
That's a great point!
I wouldn’t say he’s a solid blue or purple belt because he wouldn’t have anywhere near the level of grappling skill as these guys in many ways, I mean he said it himself that he didn’t even know how to do a rear naked choke, something you learn as a brand new white belt.
But agree that he would be on par with most of them, given what he lacks in bjj knowledge he compensated for with superior wrestling ability, which most bjj guys lack, so he would have the advantage when grappling for many positions and taking the back as he said, then once he gained those positions he’s so big and strong no one would be able to escape, it’d be like getting crushed by a bear
I reckon he was probably about three times the size, strength and weight of 99% of the guys he rolled with, which would seriously level the playing field.
@@JamesBrown- he wasnt even near twice the weight of anyone in the room but elite wrestlers have great balance, explosiveness, stamina not to mention fundamentals like gripping and positioning. It only takes basic submission defense to make them a handful for any black belt.Rodriguez isnt even a great wrestler.
@@JamesBrown-
Grappling skill is not equivalent to technical skill in submissions, grappling skill is understanding the fundamentals of moving another person's body according to your will, it's a combination of balance, strength, and experience. Technique is a part of it, but a good enough grappler is generally going to somewhat understand how to defend themselves or attack without having specific techniques in their repertoire. Many wrestlers could probably just manhandle you into something they do know how to do, like a head crank, and tap most people right there, and even if they don't have submission knowledge, it can be basically impossible to submit them for anyone who isn't very good and has significant experience alongside a fair amount of athleticism. I would say if someone can easily grapple with high level BJJ practioners from the get-go, they likely do have grappling skill, they don't have BJJ skill yet, but they are good at grappling in general sense.
It's also extremely difficult to even attempt to control a wrestler due to their takedown offense and defense alongside the general focus of their sport being to control someone on the floor, and combine that with the fact even low level wrestlers are going to be vastly more athletic than the majority of BJJ practioners (especially because many practioners largely focus on technique exclusively), and of course they are going to be difficult to deal with. I mean wrestlers are dominant in MMA partially for this reason, and you
The athletic component is extremely important, gymnasts can basically fold less experienced people from the get-go due to how ridiculously strong they are, even without grappling experience, but wrestlers combine that with significant competitive experience (not just sparring) and a great understanding of grappling at a basic level.
A submission naive Dan Severn went 15 minutes with Royce Gracie and arguably would have won had he any submission experience, which is far more common now, and Royce had previous experience with wrestler's to boot.
@@JamesBrown- Yh but clearly those are less significant details. Submission arsenal and other little things can be grown significantly with even a few months training with someone like Danaher and dds level partners. As far as the fundamentals of grappling from movement, position and control etc. he’d have a major head start as a talented wrestler. From what I saw he did so unbelievably well on his ADCC debut, mainly using well rounded top pressure paired with raw athleticism. Seems like Danaher already had his hands on a half finished product when he walked in. All he had to do was polish his overall game and technical jiu jitsu and he had a monster.
One thing that motivates me to get better is actually so I can really challenge the higher belts in my team so they can also improve.
This was great. I find it ironic that the B team took the silvers at ADCC and that New Wave JJ took the Gold. They are all elite.

Nicky and Craig are my favorite DDS guys
Hearing this from my grave bro. I like it. 👍
Then that makes Gordon the black belt slayer slayer.
It wasn't like that for me, but I did come in better in certain way than BJJ guys due to 13yrs wrestling. I got armbarred by a blue belt on my first day, but I mostly survived and did well just using wrestling and after four months I'd won several local meets and I got my blue blet basically by adding guard passing and sub defense to my wrestling.
I did jiu jitsu as a kid always wishing I had a place to wrestle. Imagine if we had practiced wrestling and jiu jitsu at separate proper place simultaneously as kids. That's the next wave that will kill the Russian wrestler wave currently in mma
🤣😂why did Nicky do an interview in his bathroom?
Solid interview
Hahaha. Not everyone can have a podcast studio setup!
And of all places, the bathroom is the place where Nicky keeps is shirt on. Who would have thought?
The guy's an idiot - straight up!
@@SuperLothaire the bathroom usually has the best acoustics. That's why you see people do Zooms from closets and bathrooms. The smaller the room, the better the acoustics especially if there is no microphones or professional setup
@@dannyh5937 yes I know the motown story, I was referring to nicky's passion for being shirtless.
Nicky Rod is the man...future #1. That said throwing shade on certain dudes isn't worth it. The real deal about this breakup comes down to this. Gordon is the Alpha and rubbed Nicky the wrong way and after the politics of figuring out who is on whose side....they split. Two massive Alpha's don't work well together. FYI, I saw this coming 2 years ago.
Wow. I was a bit surprised, but when everyone is trying to be #1, it's a tough situation. Lots of things get in the way. At the end of the day BJJ isn't a team sport, each guy lives or dies with their own performance.
You saw this coming two years ago? How?
@@llRedxBaronll When I first heard of Nicky Rod was when Gordon was heaping praise on him. I didn't know he was training with GR or DDS then he beat Cyborg at ADCC 2019. It was around that time, one thing was inevitable if Nicky Rod was truly that good and he was super confident to the only way two Alpha's can stick together in the same weight class is near-divine intervention or someone steps down. Nicky is a super strong personality and you know it when you see and hear him. GR is different but still super confident and has lots to back up his talk. It didn't seem long after that GR stopped heaping praise. That's how I knew.
Usually these things come down to money. Gordon probably just wanted more money, perhaps so did Danaher. Which is understandable because their names sell and Danaher is the best instructor. So it probably comes down to Gordon/Danaher wanting to take more than what is reasonable which would be their fault or the other guys didn't like how it wasn't being spread evenly which in case would be their fault because Gordon and Danaher do deserve a bigger cut.
He said not everyone can handle having hard practices. Not every practice needs to be hard. You can impeded recovery. Sometimes more isn't necessarily better because your focus is elsewhere. I think Nicky Rod has they physical attributes to do more stuff than the average person and he might not think in a technical way like Gordon and Danaher.
Worse take on this possible...
@@miken2968 How in anyway is this a bad take on it?
@@miken2968 I don't know the exact details of the split, and probably no one does. But that's very possible the reason. This is a tale as old as time. Same as happened to 1st line Gracies (George split), then Carlson to BTT to ATT to every other splinter of that faction. Just same as all groups, because that is the natural progression of things when money, pride, ego, independence, and growth come into play.
It’s 100% clear that Gordon and his ego were the cause of this split.
Seems to be the case. STILL TRYING TO GET GORDON on to respond.
That comes as a surprise to absolutely nobody.
@@TheJasonChambersPodcast true there is always 2 sides of a story

Why has this popped up after adcc 2022 😂
Because they faced each other for the championship
Listening to this, post ADCC weekend, other than craig jones, the B team should prob have stayed with John Danaher as their coach. Seems like people just needed to wrestle and push Nicky Rod and he is the one that crumbles.
Unfortunately they wont believe they need gordon or danaher.

i've seen this comment on multiple videos and it baffles me. no one in the world is on Gordons level and you guys thought Nicky would wrap him up??
savage!!!!!!! love the dedication of driving 6 hours.
Well Gordon might’ve been the cause for the split but it’s pretty humble for them to take the name “B Team” and on Gordon’s end, he still seems to at least be able to stay humbled to John’s advice and supervision. It’s a shame the B Team lost John.. That in itself almost makes the split not worth it. Positive energy is a huge factor in progressing in what you love doing though.
Jason good at this going to subscribe to his channel
Thanks!!!!
B-Team can keep getting silver. Nothing wrong with always coming in second as long as Gordon and John are around.
Considering everyone but Gordon got together for BTeam JJ (even his brother) it’s easy to assume who the “poison” was. That being said they seem to have no ill-will towards each other on social media at the very least
BJJ has always had drama, who know s why - but as long as they are all still happy, healthy and killing it - who cares. :)

jason looks amazing, i remeber him from human weapon series the guy doesnt age!
When you're young and naive you think you've outgrown the master. My professor got his black belt from one of the goats, and trained under Carlinhos too. Two of his instructor black belts truly believed they were close to him in knowledge, we all knew they weren't.
Danaher and Ryan bring in the money. They deserve a larger percentage.
They've trained solely together for this long. It feels silly to think that Nicky and Craig haven't tapped Gordon multiple times. Gordon must have said or done something pretty bad in retaliation for his own brother to part ways, professionally. Gordon and Craig have competed against each other and I feel Craig had mercy on his team mate. This may not be the case the next time all these guys meet again. Nicky Rod is going to undoubtedly get better in BJJ under Craig and N. Ryan.
Well we have Garry Tonon coming on so hopefully he can shed some light on this!
No dude, Nikki rod is the cancer and the snake on that team, dude is a huge narcissist scumbag who is trying to undermine the relationship between the brothers, he pumps up Nicky Ryan constantly end has held a long-term jealousy and hatred towards Gordon.
I'm just finding this video but there are definitely gyms in which certain guys o no get tapped to others. Even over a long period of time. That's not the case everywhere. But it does exist if one just happens to be so much better.
@@johnmuir8878 we have couple of mma fighters who are very high level college wrestlers also. I don’t think I saw them get tapped once in 3 years I been there.

31:38 Wow. Shots fired. Theres a thin line between love and hate. Hope this doesnt spin out of hand.
Yeah, so I’m thinking the poison he’s referring to is Gordon, right? Was that what you were picking up?
We have Garry Tonon on next week - lets see what he has to say
You have to be a very good jiu jitsu grappler to catch higher level wrestlers without the gi. I think guys with a good leg attack game will have a better chance. Then you have wrestlers that just have a higher grappling IQ. Most wrestlers come from a competition background. Competing twice a week in season. That in itself is one thing most jiu jitsu grapplers don’t have.
Great insight, Thanks for the reply
Hi Dojo Mark. Lot's of truth sprinkled in there. I'm no expert grappler... but IMHO BJJ should trump wrestling, theoretically speaking. The reason is BJJ's Judo foundation. You mention several aspects of why this doesn't prove out in practice. 🙂 CHEERS.
@@stanclark3992
I mean BJJ only wins if the wrestler comes to you and basically just walks into your guard (which is how early BJJ guys often beat submission naive wrestler's) unless you really work on takedown offense/defense, because this is what allows you to control an opponent and dictate the grounds of a fight. A good wrestler, be it Freestyle or Greco-Roman, doesn't need to have specific submission experience, because they are going to get hold of you, control you, and just basically do whatever they want due to wrestling being extremely dynamic, requiring serious athleticism (which is another huge difference, because this level generally isn't see in many professional players, let alone hobbyists), and usually giving a great deal of grappling experience.
BJJ is great in its realm of specialization, but it relies on specific setups and positions that require you to be able to exert some degree of control over your opponent. If your opponent can simply get-up as soon as they feel somewhat in danger, it will be difficult to do anything, if you can't take them down to gain a dominant position, it's difficult to do anything, and if you can't keep hold of someone, it is unlikely you will submit them. Even Royce Gracie had trouble with Dan Severn because of this, and Dan arguably would have won if one or two variables (his completely naivete to submission grappling and the organization of the event) had been different, and it was a 15 minute grappling war. That level of experience, raw athleticism, and the ability to control someone against their will (BJJ generally relies on leverage and trapping people, whereas wrestlers generally have the ability to force you into a position). I mean there's a reason why wrestling + boxing basically invalidated BJJ specialists in MMA, it's just really hard to deal with unless you have trained takedowns seriously. Judo often has a similar matchup with BJJ (, even in the early days most matchups fought by Jigoro's students were victories for them (most famously being Kimura obviously), for the same reasons, though they are more generalist that GR/FS wrestling, and actually do have submission grappling in their syllabus. Meanwhile Catch wrestling is basically just superior to BJJ if trained properly, because it combines submission grappling with the advantages of GR/FS Wrestling (but good luck finding a catch wrestling school, and it being a good one even if you do).
Having a large number of techniques and being highly technical isn't always a benefit if you don't have the experience and athleticism to back it up. Not only that but simplicity is often the best approach, and many setup's in BJJ only work if your opponent understands the threat of a position and moves in a way you expect (which is where you trap them), you only really see many setup's actually occur in BJJ competition against other BJJ players. If somebody is just really, really good at a limited set of basic techniques, they can still beat someone with a larger repertoire as long as they understand how to change up between those techniques. GSP was perhaps the best MMA-focused wrestler out there, and he beat plenty of great wrestler's by simply having one or two techniques he could switch into from anywhere and being athletic enough to pull it off.
It's like any martial art, a person with real competitive experience is probably going to dominate those who don't, even when outside their realm of knowledge (within reason obviously, a Boxer probably isn't going to do too well in MMA sparring), and if you specialize in an aspect of fighting you can usually use that to lever an advantage over people who might not have that, and especially so if you have serious athleticism to back it up. Being an extreme generalist is usually better, but both BJJ and GR/FS Wrestling are specialist styles, and that can make or break a matchup by itself.
@@AveSicarius Damn, I cato. It's a YT comment section... and you outcompete me today.
I'll be put up aS your guest for Anderson Siva $$$, and present a seminar... which will never happen 'cause MMA doesn't have the cognitive willpower to embrace TMA. 😁CHEERS.
@@stanclark3992 Without the gi, the BJJ person has to be solid with leg attacks to slow down and control a large and athletic wrestler who has solid submission defense. Wrestlers do very well once they figure out things like: protecting their neck and keeping their arms in. That doesn't take very long to figure out. And wrestlers are use to a faster pace than your hobbyist jiu-jitsu player. Keep in mind, the keyword here in this conversation with Rodriguez is he is training with a lot of hobbyists. Regardless if they are black belts, a hobbyist doesn't train with the same intensity and aggresiveness as a young competitive wrestler who is use to hard and intense training sessions 5-6 days a week. Hobbyists probably aren't training more than 3-4 days a week. Also, Rodriguez is a heavyweight as well. Not many heavyweights are as athletic as he is. Then you have to take into account his training partners. He's training with some of the best No Gi grapplers out there.
Brothers can be on separate teams and still be brothers.
TF you talking about, its obvious gordon is the poison
Yes but this isn't typical when the start on the same team. It's one thing to be in college and you and your brother get drafted to different NFL teams.
I just watched a YT doc about a thing called "The Little Sibling Effect" in the NBA. Its just basically that in the younger brother has to compete against his older, fa bigger brother growing up. The younger brother has to outsmart his brother, then when they older the younger bro s obviously going to be better. Probably the case with GRs younger brother.
Just think, he hasnt even hit the jab yet. I love NR he is the peoples champ

@@Mindstangle it’s a gastrointestinal shit demon. They love greasy fried foods and empowered by dairy. Eating them in combination will have you detonating explosive fecal fiends. Psyllium fiber, active charcoal and holy water will rid you of that shit demon.
Jokes aside. According to Daoist Strong emotions are housed in the organ systems and medical sciences has found a lot of neural connections with said major vital organs. So...you never know.
What's up with his gut?
Point blank... Nicky Rod will not progress to the world champ level without an actual coach. This weekend proved he needs to evolve his game a bit. Wrestling and body locks will only get you so far.
Exactly the shit talking he did isn’t looking too good now😂sounds like everybody mad that the obvious best Grappler in the world is on like 61 win streak and John decided to give him more attention that’s what happens at mma, muay thai, BJJ and combat sport gyms the top guys get the most attention
im a Nicky Rod fan - but he doesnt know BJJ. he just takes the bull by the horn and man handles folks. which isnt bad - but just look at Ryan, he looks like a surgeon in comparison to a sledge hammer.
But Nicky R is only getting better and better. If he is this dominant now, imagine when he has 10 years of BJJ under his belt. MURDERER status
@@TheJasonChambersPodcast actually, his bjj game is stuck. he is super strong, but not able to think it thru. Cyborg actually beat him, but the judges gave it to Rod. I predict he will take the shortcut and do mma in a couple of years.
@@amirkazemi2517 I hate this type of shit. If the judges gave it to Nick, that means Cyborg didn't win, you just disagree with it. In fact, your opinion holds less weight than a judges, so just say Nick won, because he did.
Hi Amir. Yes. This is precisely the point as to why the wrestler 'often' wins. Athletic superiority. Then mention Jon Jones in the same breath... no better example. Martial arts isn't about physicality alone... and wrestler's build a massive pillar upon the presumed fact that greater physical strength is the most important base talent. 😑 CHEERS.
Gordon obviously sees Nick as an enormous threat to the throne so I think this split was inevitable.
Interesting take. Both guys have incredibly high ceilings and another 10 years at a high competition level.
Its a little tough to listen to with all the interruptions, perhaps due to lag in connection but maybe temper a little.
Zoom is not the best but thanks for the feedback. I'll check into it
@@TheJasonChambersPodcast I was thinking the same, thanks for listening.
Really sad that this split is most likely Bc of Gordon, you die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain. Hope this isn’t the case. Would love to see Johns take on all of this in the future
:)
Its hard to tell if B team is still under Renzo and John. If they are not.. they I think they were the poison.
Nicky is a smart guy
:)
