In his most recent "tell-all" interview John Danaher FINALLY breaks his silence and reveals the true nature of the "personality conflict" which led to the DDS split over a year ago.
When John Danaher appeared on the Lex Fridman Podcast (link below for the full episode), Lex was quick to bring up the subject of the true nature of the DDS split. As it turns out, some of the speculations that were running wild a year ago were true, the Danaher Death Squad split because of conflict between the two Ryan brothers, Nicky and Gordon ultimately had a falling out which was exacerbated by their time in Puerto Rico.
I for one wonder how the performance of some of the key members of the B-Team would have differed if they stayed as one team under the banner of DDS, but I guess we'll never know. However, I think it's a silver lining that we now have TWO absolute jiujitsu POWERHOUSE teams in the form of the B-Team as well as New Wave.

I think it says a lot about Gordon and Jon that the majority of the team chose Gordon’s lil bro over Gordon/Jon. You don’t just leave the GOATs of no-gi without some serious toxicity.

To leave the greatest coach in the world and the best competitor for his little brother seems very unusual for hardcore competitors who want to become the best in their weight category and earn a lot through dvd sales. Normally most people would put an blind eye on such things if they want to be sucessfull. So it has to be VERY bad and serious by the amount of people who left

@@TehUltimateSnake Watch the B-Team video. There is one where Nicky paints a picture of Craig and they joke around. Craig mentions in that video that Nicky need a break from BJJ and time to himself.
It was a serious moment, which is rare with Craig, for just a couple of seconds. It was pretty telling if you are a good people reader.

But really, Danaher shouldn’t have waited till it affected training. When you’re a professional athlete, your training is every waking hour - they’re always thinking and visualizing their craft, esp if they’re surrounded by fellow competitors all day every day.
Maybe he wasn't the person best equipped to deal with something like this. Did the tensions not build up shortly after their father died?

Gyms go through occasional problems and sometimes split up. They made their decision and personally I’m okay with not knowing. It’s none of our business. Especially if it was family and personal. Let’s be glad we have both of these two powerhouse teams. 🔥

What do you mean? Nicky and Nick are friends and co-founders of the B-Team, and Nicky trains Jay on a daily basis. To me it feels that aside the personal issues among Gordon and Nicky, Gordon and Nick were developing some kind of rivarly , because they were on the same weight class and Nick openly claimed that he wanted to be the best.

There's no comparison between New Wave and B Team. New Wave’s results at ADCC we're unquestionably dominant.

It’s a wild thing to think of because you wonder who will get that recognition let’s say 50, 100, or 200 years from now and there’s some you could suggest in modern times but no one more definitive than John.

Purely speculation here, but I would think with Gordon being the narcissist of all narcissists, that he treated the entire team as if their only purpose in life was to support him and build him up. Any crumbs they picked up along the way should be considered a gift from him. He's a 10 at BJJ, but appears to be a zero at being a decent human.
I think the split was good for all athletes to step out of the shadow from Gordon. Only sad thing really is the brother dispute. I hope they figure it out what ever it is you only have one family.

I think the split was ALL about the money. I like Craig, but he gives off the vibe that he puts money before everything else. Plus, B-team thought they had a mini Danaher in Nicky Gordon.

Yeah he did, he mentioned that the tension was between the two brothers. He didn't go into any more specific detail about it but the speculation for a while has been that the argument was over their father's estate. I'm not sure if this is true or not but if it is it's quite sad but hey, who are we to judge

Simply, Gordon's ego shunned away the team, Nicky fancies himself as a Danaher 2.0 and jealous of Gordon's success and his lack there of despite being related and sharing the same training and coaches, and the rest of the team want to be superstars in their own right

I could imagine it being hard to deal with Gordons personality on the daily. Also probably a lot of ego involved all around especially when there is a clear alpha who doesn't mind reminding everyone. Nicky Rod seems like a cocky guy as well so no surprise it would eventually get uncomfortable. Sad when siblings fall out with each other but time might sort it out.

Apparently, splitting apart wasn't the only the split... I looked at Renzo Gracie's website and John Danaher isn't listed as an affiliate school. So I guess everyone split from Renzo's group.

Ryan said on the JRE podcast that the split was in part due to differences in “branding”. He wants to create a brand and make money, some of the decisions going along with that apparently pissed off half the gym……I’m sure there’s infighting as well

Nicky Rod is not even a black belt. No one knew brown belt Gordon. I don't think Nicky can beat Gordon, but time will tell.

Danaher then attempts to victimize himself "We were left more or less homeless"... as if he would not be welcomed to teach just about anywhere or did not have the money to rent a space to train.... just because he talks slowly does not mean he's sharing words of wisdom.

Additionally, no one has asked WHY John Danaher chose to stay only with Gordon. I mean besides the obvious that he is the biggest star in the sport. Did he feel bad leaving Renzo's academy as an instructor there? What about the bulk of the DDS team leaving for B team, the bulk of the "team" is there, so in theory he would've went with them, but solely stuck with Gordon. I'm assuming there's a monetary element Gordon offered John, but who knows. I'm speculating. Also no disrespect on my part, it is what it is I'm just very curious.
Garry Tonon and Oliver Taza also stayed with him. So it wasn´t only Gordon

@@KierenLefevre Depends on the situation. In John's story they were left high and dry or "homeless." Who is to say who found the property and talked to the previous owners? One of the old co-owners of the old gym (Gracie Humaita)...is one of the owners of B-Team. Just not the "face" of B-Team.
They may have, but Danaher's team is the one shining on the mats, judging by their recent performance at ADCC - compared to B-Team who are rather ironically really living up to the name (and they're stacked with top talent.)

All of danahers long time students, Taza, Gary, BigDan, LukeG and couple others... who came up with the DDS actually lost in ADCC outside of Gordon anD GORDON would have won ADCC even if he also joined the B team....
if u want reality Nicky ryan is actually danahers only Homegrown white to black belt student who competes at ADCC and u saw he has failed to medal in 3 ADCCs now. Everyone else was already a purple-black belt before joining danaher. Nicky ryan literally proves Danaher is just a top coach like many top coaches and is not special... Without gordon ryan who would be adcc champion under about a dozen other coaches... who exactly is danaher? Why didn't danaher produce kade rutolo the youngest ADCC champion in history??? XD

San Juan is a great city, absolutely stunning, but I can see how living there would make tensions worse. They were technically in the US but it does not feel like the US. Most local's are sweet, but there’s a large “get out gringo” contingency. I’d imagine it was only the team, maybe some random girls, as a social group. Pork and plantains get boring, the culture is more South than North American (culture shock can turn to feeling isolated), and it must have been unbelievably hot in the training room. Add expectation, ego, and shit talk to that mix and it’d be tough for very close friendships to survive without good communication. Love John and Gordon’s work, but I can’t see either saying, hey, you guys seem frustrated and we are too, perhaps we should all bring this to a head and talk it out.

Puerto Rico also had some pretty crazy lockdowns and COVID restrictions, it wasn't exactly peak Puerto Rico during that time.

B team isn't an awesome team unfortunately, they are high level for sure but they don't perform the same as they did under John
They are doing pretty damn well and New Wave's primary accomplishments come from the greatest grappler of all time. They are both top notch gyms.

Danaher has 1 homegrown student Nickyryan from white to BB with 3 adcc losses now which proves danaher is not special he is just another top coach and nearly his entire team lost at adcc outside gordon lol. Kade rutolo is better than anyone that danaher as produced outside of Gordon ryan.......yet kade has never even met danaher. Stop spewing bullshit

Nicky rod made it to the finals of absolute in less time than any other person in the history of the sport. He beat Felipe Pena on the way there. I would say b team is pretty impressive.

BJJ days in mma are almost over. the Gracies had great market ing... fight guys with no experience to make themselves look good. hickson was "the best" and he never fought anybody of substance. wouldnt fight Sakuraba to keep the mystique in tack. Royce faced much better fighters. But was never highly regarded in The BJJ community. and no Gracies even in mma anymore.

B team made a bad call leaving John. Behind every great team is a great coach and that's a fact. The B Team is basically a group of dudes that are amazing at BJJ and train together. It is always easier to have a coach come up with your game plan, training, peak phase etc. I also get the vibe that Nicky Rod and Gordon can't stand each other. Call it a hunch, but it is a gut feeling I get.

His “laid back” attitude is not that at all. It is proven for a fact that by maintaining the same voice level drops anxiety, and allows someone to keep their head and emotions in check.
