Idk how many people are gonna be pointing this out, but it was the Ship that said the "More than a year's salary" line, not the president. Who knows what salary even means to an actual robot.
Taking a quick second to address this! That's a fair point and a good catch; I didn't notice that! 💙 However, I feel it doesn't make much of a difference to the premise of my calculations, as I went for ranges between the company's (most probable) minimum- and maximum-earning workers. :) My interpretation is that, as a company vessel, the ship's view on salaries probably wouldn't extend beyond the range of Hocotate Freight's payroll register, regardless of whether it earns wages or not. (And even if the Ship does for some reason, I HIGHLY doubt the president would pay it more than he pays himself!) Thank you for bringing that up, though -- I've been convinced for all these years that the President said that line! 😅
@@ScaleTree I’ll also add another possible interpretation; perhaps in Hocatatian culture, the salary is just the “spending” cash and the company pays for living expenses separately. I.E. Olimar’s family house, food, healthcare, etc are paid for by the company, and then 100 pokos could be relatively small because it’s only for non-living expenses. But there’s not really much evidence of this tbf
10100 pokos divided by 5000 golden pikpik carrots equals 2.02 poko per golden pikpik carrot If golden pikpik carrots are only valued at whole poko instead of Poko plus whatever currency used to depict a fraction of a whole Poko then a golden pikpik carrot are worth at least 3 poko 3 poko per golden carrot multiplied by 5000 equals to 15000 Meaning that most of Hocotate Freight’s property plus the S.S. Dolphin had a total sell value of 4900
6:34 This is a minor but common mistake, but the Ship actually says "This thing's worth 100 Pokos?! That's more than a year's salary!", as you can hear the Ship's speaking noises rather than the President's during the time where those subtitles are on screen.
im really glad this video follows the salary logic rather than basing value on the treasures, and even mentions the flaw in that line of logic. it's like claiming that the modern day dollar is worthless because Action Comics #1 was originally worth 10 cents in 1938, but sold for over 3 million in 2014.
I always interpreted the president’s words as “A” year’s salary. Meaning the minimum wage on Hocotate. I just couldn’t comprehend Olimar’s salary being worth less than a tiny amount of aluminum
That's a valid interpretation! :) 💙 Though, in all fairness to the bottle cap, as far as the Hocotatians are concerned, it's a torso-high remnant of a (presumably extinct) race of giant aliens. I imagine a genuine alien artifact on our planet would go for a boatload of cash, so why not have the bottle cap be worth a bunch?
I think it is worth reiterating that all the items you are recovering in the game are *wildly* valuable. They range from exotic foods, to alien life, to revolutionary technology, and even military interests (the dumbbell) They could absolutely be worth to them what tens of thousands of dollars is to us. And on that note, a "Poko" could be a slang term for a larger value like a "grand" is for $1,000. Also, being an entirely different planet the year could be a shorter period of time but that was somewhat covered
My recent fascination with Pikmin (the fascination was pioneered by a channel that goes by Press A!) has led me here. Thank you so much, my brain can finally rest after trying to mental math the whole Poko:USD ratio.
Finally the answers to my important questions. I saw the cutscene again recently and thought "Huh, 100 pocos is more than a year's salary. Wonder what the conversion is then."
Since we're doing some wacky Pikmin math and I'm not even close to being smart enough to do it, here's an insanely weird question Considering we see the Koppaite crew chug 1 jug of juice as their ration per day, how much juice do they actually consume per day, either alone or with the full group of four (which is assuming Brittany lets Louie at least have some too)? We can likely approximate something with the varying amounts of juice each fruit has to give though admittedly it is a bit inconsistent for the sake of difficulty balancing reasons. And if you really wanna be extra, we can try comparing the amount of juice consumed to their body size to see if they're taking in a normal equivalent or if their bodies are working through that juice *fast* to consume much more than humans normally could. These are all just really silly questions but part of me has always wondered.
Had to disappear for a little while before replying to this comment -- my apologies! That... is an incredible question, and I'm already thinking of a million different ways to approach it. Holy crap. 👀🔥 I think it's irresponsible for me to make promises at this juncture, but color me EXTREMELY interested and know that I'm going to look into it!
The main question here is how large one bottle of juice is. We never see the juice next to anything, so the bottles could be anywhere from the size of their hands to a massive keg larger than charlie

I wonder if you could get any interesting numbers by using the loan/debt amount as the base. I know companies can take out loans of differing amounts, but I wonder if there's any kind of standard a lower end freight company would even be able to take out.
