I am with Wes Nelson in this. Awful conditions. Caused awful approach and decent. But the landing itself? The touchdown? Brilliant! Even more so given the awful approach and decent caused by the awful conditions. It is about what you identify as landing. I have a crippling fear of planes and, obviously, plane crashes, and what do I do in my spare time? Well, watch rough landing videos on UA-cam, of course.
My fear is not crippling, but I don't fly anymore--mainly 'cause I'm old and got nowhere to go, LOL. But yeah, my husband and I experienced a really harrowing landing situation some years ago, and we didn't fly much after that. And I love aviation videos as well!
A fear of flying? Why don't you "fly" yourself some time? You can, in a simulator, and there will be a real pilot with you showing you how everything works and what to do :-) These are young people who have to pay off a huge debt after flight school, so I guess a cool job like this is rather welcome for them. After all, they get to do what they love, only in a different setting. ... They'll explain you everything and they can show you that there is nothing to fear. And it's fun, too. ...I "landed" in Anchorage with dual engine failure. Without crashing :-) That was fun.
The title is totaly wrong. Nothing horrible here. It's all normal well managed approaches performed by skilled pilots leading to normal go-arounds or landings, all is weather depending. Rather go-around than crash ! Very goog planes and pilots.
Well, if you had been on any of these flights, I guess you would be of a different opinion! ... Of course the pilots are really skilled and all that. But it's still an awful landing.
Oh yes there are. We hit the runway at Kuala Lumpur one stormy night like an Ivan Lendl served ace! The poor 747's wing tips nearly slapped the ground [quick check to see if landing gear shockies were not protruding out the top of the wing] and it seemed like an eternity before the wheels came to the runway again, whereupon the reverse thrust and brakes were applied like you've never seen before, and all while the nose of the aircraft was lurching wildly to and fro from left to right as we managed to shed speed. There was a full on storm going at the time, and I think the poor pilots got ambushed and slammed by a windshear right on flaring out for touch down. Probably about the most memorable 'hairy' landing I can remember - but then there was that night in the 70's, flying from regional Albury-Wodonga to Sydney in the old faithful Fokker Friendship f27, when coming into Sydney the Pilots could not get a gear lock confirmation on the Port Landing Gear, with us flying around in a hold out over Penrith way for Sometime, and both the Pilot an co Pilot taking turns to come down and look through the windows with a torch as the landing gear was lowered and retracted numerous times. Pilots were unsure if it was properly down and locked or whether it would fold on landing. Best thing was, that the mob from Tallangatta Football Club (and who'd been carrying on like kindergarten kiddies who'd had way too much red cordial for most of the flight) were now seriously calm and silent - you could hear a pin drop in that plane right then. Any way they eventually went for the landing. We came into Sydney from the western St Peter's aporoach (main Runway), everybody leaning forward on pillows, all the pretty flashing lights of Aviation Fire Services lined up along the taxiways, but the landing was uneventful (but possibly Jesus had a bit of a win with a few souls in the football club mob). 🤣
Very skilled pilots versus nature should be the title. Obviously these are skilled AND BRAVE pilots. Its obviously the situation in regard to winds at the landing strip that causes these dangerous flying conditions.
Yeah i was thinking the same thing. AN almost identical approached being attacked by that wind gust pushing the nose down and then to his left badly, and yet he landed the plane like a god. I bet he wasn't even looking out the window when he landed it, i bet he was talking to the stewardess who was asking him if he wanted a cup of Tea while waiting to fly out again. @@EXPHAALPHA
Looked like some pretty competent pilots to me. A go-around is a smart decision when needed. The landings I saw were classic cross wind landings. Madeira is a challenging airport at the least.
It must be noted it, the intense low altitude winds in these events the reverse thrust helped! These planes are trying to land traveling at 200 mph. or more. Pilots are very, very good. Thank you.
Legend has it that the Brussels Airlines flight is still circling today and when the wind is calm you can faintly hear the sound of an airplane applying thrust

I see no bad landings, but very difficult initial approaches.
I'm a pilot and can see the base to final turn is very tight making it sometimes difficult to line the aircraft up for for landing. These pilots are doing the best they can. Some may not know this whacky airport that well.
I’m sure this airport is rated as one of the worst in the world. No computer landings here. Good to know that there are still skilled pilots out there 👍
atlubeck 👍🇵🇹 I lived in Ponta Delgada (Azores) in '83 & on the main land In 84. I learned Portuguêse with the Açorean "Micalence" (sp?) accent. I spent some time on Madeira as well. This was BEFORE they had extended the runway to almost double what it is today. Landings had to be exact. The same weather problems existed then. Several years earlier a plane attempting to land dropped below the runway and made full impact with the shear perpendicular cliff where the road is. All onboard were killed. Not just Madeira, but all Portuguêse people have a tradition of all passengers clapping upon landing. It was never more appropriate then safely landing here. For takeoff they used a shuttle to back the plane up to end of the runway where they land and back the plane up where the rear wheel were close to the end of the runway. The back of the plane hung out past the end. I was looking straight down with no runway below me. Only a vertical cliff, a road leading to the airport and ocean. The pilot would then set the brakes and throttle up till the brakes reached their limit. They would then pop the brakes and give it all she had. Definitely cool! Just like a Drag Strip. BTW Christopher Columbus's wife was the daughter of the King of Madeira. Also, he was taught how to sail by the Portuguese based in Lisbon.
Joe fregoso. We landed there a few years ago. At the time we had no idea it was so challenging for the pilots, other than it was a short runway! Seeing these clips, I’m astounded how expert the pilots are.
Madeira is fantastic to visit. I've been so many times, and the pilots who do land here are certified specifically to land in Madeira. There hasn't been an accident there since the 1970s.
@@boringperson-zb8vy And it's good to mention that the accident only happened due to bad visibility conditions (fog/lack of lights in the runway - led to poor piloting judgement) and a much shorter runway. It was 1600m back then and now it's 2780m :) So yeah, you might have 1 out of 10 landings where you "dance" a little bit but it's really safe.
Looks like a challanging place to land. I watched acouple and saw pilots under difficult circumstances make good landings, bumpy at first, but when they hit ground they werent in bad shape. Thanks to all the pilots who do this for a living. You have kept me alive.
That Austrian Flight went in so confidently after rocking around with the wind. I was expecting a go around. The way that pilot just went all in. This is why we applaud! 👏🏼
I bet the 'sink rate' warning was annoying that day😉lol. Awesome skills by those pilots though and a bit of excitement on the flightdeck for those approaches 😊
I landed in Madeira this morning and the only reason I’m on UA-cam watching this video is because we had a landing like this! I nearly shit myself! Seems like it’s a common thing, Pilot got a round of applause and came on the mic 20 seconds after landing as cool as a cucumber 😂 plane was in complete silence for last 5 mins of the journey! Don’t mind admitting I was terrified 😂
...well the landings can be 'harrowing' relative to most places, though the extremely few landing incidents (only like 3 or so in the 70s) IMHO certainly speaks to (demonstrates) the superb ability/capability of flight crews despite the often less than ideal landing conditions
Don't know who titled this vid, but with the crosswinds as bad as they obviously were, I'd say all of these were fantastic landings performed by skilled pilots....
We sat on a plane for 5 hours in GR before we took off because of freezing rain in GR and in Detroit (our first destination), and then circled Detroit a couple of hours before the first try. We landed beautifully and were slowing down but then we took off again. Everyone screamed. I’m guessing the runway was solid ice and he didn’t think it was safe or we were sliding or something. It was unnerving because we had slowed down, then all the sudden boom...we were thrown back in our seats and after the initial screaming, it seemed like everyone was holding his/her breath. After we landed (after two attempts) we learned that we had missed our connection to LA because we were so late, even though our plane was still sitting there. They had given our seats away because we weren’t there when they loaded the plane. Detroit had been mostly shut down so there were people everywhere, sleeping on the floor, getting sick in the bathrooms, etc. Very difficult to walk around. It was the holidays and people were headed home. They gave us seats on a different plane because other people had not shown up...probably in the same situation we were in. We had to trade a DC-10 for a 737 for our 4-hour flight. We had to wait a few more hours because cops with dogs removed a woman in handcuffs. When we finally got on the plane everyone was shaken and asked us what was happening. We waited a few more hours, getting de iced twice, then took off. I had the flu, high fever, achy and dying of thirst but they didn’t serve drinks for two hours and I didn’t have any water. The woman across the aisle kept throwing up and thank goodness they had air sickness bags in the front pocket because airlines rarely offer them now. When we landed, our cab driver started fighting with another driver, screaming at each other at the top of their lungs. I was done. I pounded on the trunk screaming for him to give our bags back so that we could get another cab. We finally got home. My temp was 105°. I had a letter waiting from Delta Airlines. They had invited me to come to Atlanta to interview for a flight attendant position. I laughed hysterically. I spent three weeks in bed. I never understood why they didn’t just cancel the first flight. We waited on the plane for five hours (until 11pm) because Detroit had closed temporarily. There wasn’t going to be a break in the freezing rain. They didn’t give us an option. And when we got to Detroit, we still had to circle for another two hours. The plane really stunk from all of the nervous sweat. The flight is only 1/2 hour but it took a total of 9 hours sitting on the plane! The entire trip was 20 hours...Grand Rapids, Mi to LA. Normally around 5-6 hours including travel and wait time. I never flew during the holidays again. I am very claustrophobic and if I hadn’t been so horribly ill and on flu medication, I would’ve been a hysterical mess.

Idk if this is a Joke or not cuz the vid was made about nine months ago and u posted this 6 mon.. oh I see the plane landed 🛬 and died
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂 I fear it has burned more fuel in all the landing attempts rather than during the flight itself....😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖
U guys r mean xd
😂😂
Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing... at least that's the way I always felt.
Any landing where you can re-use the aircraft without repair is an excellent landing! :-) All those approaches and landings were pretty excellent!
You bet your ass thats the truth
You can tell some of these pilots were like, "Fuck it! This aint gonna work." xD Lol.
LOL! Same here!!
A fear of flying? Why don't you "fly" yourself some time? You can, in a simulator, and there will be a real pilot with you showing you how everything works and what to do :-)
These are young people who have to pay off a huge debt after flight school, so I guess a cool job like this is rather welcome for them. After all, they get to do what they love, only in a different setting. ... They'll explain you everything and they can show you that there is nothing to fear. And it's fun, too. ...I "landed" in Anchorage with dual engine failure. Without crashing :-) That was fun.
Sound's logical 😕
You like feeding your phobias, don't you ?
The title is totaly wrong. Nothing horrible here. It's all normal well managed approaches performed by skilled pilots leading to normal go-arounds or landings, all is weather depending. Rather go-around than crash ! Very goog planes and pilots.
I think it's a lost in translation thing! With a surname like Passos I doubt English is his first language.
boat?
Well, if you had been on any of these flights, I guess you would be of a different opinion! ... Of course the pilots are really skilled and all that. But it's still an awful landing.
Well said Philippe..
Philippe Durand
Amazing footage - absolutely wild seeing a plane like a 757 being thrown around like that. Challenging landings!
footage?
The Condor landing was awesome! Thought he wouldn't make it
Which one is it?
The one where the plane says condor on it in blue
The best !! Agreed
Wow, fantastic footage from this windy and challenging day to fly. I do no think I would have wanted to have been on some of those flights!!
I know I would have wanted to be OFF them! Dreadful ...
Сууупппеееррр шикарно спасибо большое молодцы
There's no such thing as awful landings....
To be honest this were impressive landings.
There's Ryanair landings.
In those extreme conditions it's almost perfect landings
All passengers at this airport should be greeted after landing with one of those little bags only this time with clean underwear inside.
Very skilled pilots versus nature should be the title. Obviously these are skilled AND BRAVE pilots. Its obviously the situation in regard to winds at the landing strip that causes these dangerous flying conditions.
"Can you fly this plane and land it?"
---"Surely, you can't be serious!"
"I am serious....and don't call me Shirley."
"Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue........"
Great video! Nice spotting. I really liked the condor 757!
Die AnimalZ , the 757 is a beautiful looking airplane too.
Condor 1 did a great job.
Banch that's probably the best stabilized landing I've seen in a while
I was just about to say anything. Looked to have his sh*t all over the place, but then landed the thing like "So what?"
Appreciated those landings and applaud for the skills and efforts of those pilots.
Always safety first.
Looked like some pretty competent pilots to me. A go-around is a smart decision when needed. The landings I saw were classic cross wind landings. Madeira is a challenging airport at the least.
Oh for sure, there’s a reason why it’s a captain only airport which requires special qualifications
It must be noted it, the intense low altitude winds in these events the reverse thrust helped!
These planes are trying to land traveling at 200 mph. or more.
Pilots are very, very good.
Thank you.
200 mph or more? The reverse thrust helped? How can someone be so ignorant and dare to comment on something he knows nothing about?
Legend has it that the Brussels Airlines flight is still circling today and when the wind is calm you can faintly hear the sound of an airplane applying thrust
I see no bad landings, but very difficult initial approaches.
Some pretty good flying skills. Kudos to the pilots! Thanks for sharing.
5:35 lol after the second try Brussels Airlines decided to give up and just go back home
It probably gone to the neighboring Island, Porto Santo
I'm a pilot and can see the base to final turn is very tight making it sometimes difficult to line the aircraft up for for landing. These pilots are doing the best they can. Some may not know this whacky airport that well.
They do know it well, and are specially trained to land there due to the conditions to be expected.
Yup, avoiding the gpws terrain, the airport location itself make the weather like that
I’m sure this airport is rated as one of the worst in the world. No computer landings here. Good to know that there are still skilled pilots out there 👍
Wow 😮 stunning video, I really liked it 😃
The approach angle and the crosswinds make this a very challenging landing. Not for newbie pilots.

Concerning the conditions that Condor 757 looked extremely smooth
1:05 Look at the vertical stabilizer, scary
Incredible footage as always at Madeira! Wind-shear is, for sure, nasty! Liked!
no wind shear, wind was low speed , only thermal turbulences+light wind downwash from the relief...common known on mountain airfields...
atlubeck 👍🇵🇹
I lived in Ponta Delgada (Azores) in '83 & on the main land In 84.
What an amazing job by the pilots of that first Condor 757
Respect to the pilots for deciding to go around on time, under heavy crosswinds
Actually all the landings were fine!
Nothing awful here, except for the weather.
Except the weather and your blindness do u not see they did bad at landing
Yes bad weather and runaway, but awesome pilot !
Stunning footage and great work by the pilots, liked :)
Depois da falha na primeira tentativa 0:59 resolveram mudar o nome da cia aérea para "SEGUNDA".
@@hungry4road482 english plz
@@MA-kw3ov 🤣
Good landings.
Scary approaches.
Condor - like a boss !!! Cheers Sam :)
Awful very horrible title for this video
My respect for the pilots 👍👍
your the idiot here. Tell us everything about planes since you think you are smarter than anyone else
The pilots are really courageous.
Congratulations for their's amazing well done work.
If nobody was hurt or injured when the plane came to a stop, it’s a good landing.
Some great pilot skills on these adverse weather landings.
Very good captured mate well done
Not an easy task to land here, well done to all pilots involved in this video!
Joe fregoso. We landed there a few years ago. At the time we had no idea it was so challenging for the pilots, other than it was a short runway! Seeing these clips, I’m astounded how expert the pilots are.
Short? It's 2700 meters!
Great footages, especially those with the spectacular go arrounds. Big like
*JUST ANOTHER CLICK BAIT B.S. TITLE ALERT!*
Also, anytime you touch down in a plane and you weren't hurt or killed, IT IS A GOOD LANDING!
When I was training on Piper Arrows my instructor use to say "any landing you walk away from is a good landing".
Man that Primera go-around was amazing. Superb video mate.
Well filmed. Liked.
The fact that the pilots didn't get arrogant and just plow down no matter the wind or whatever, says a lot of their professionalism. Hats off to them.
I guess Madeira is off my bucket list! 😂😂
"Bucket Lists" are gay
:-))))))))
Madeira is fantastic to visit. I've been so many times, and the pilots who do land here are certified specifically to land in Madeira.
There hasn't been an accident there since the 1970s.
@@boringperson-zb8vy And it's good to mention that the accident only happened due to bad visibility conditions (fog/lack of lights in the runway - led to poor piloting judgement) and a much shorter runway. It was 1600m back then and now it's 2780m :)
So yeah, you might have 1 out of 10 landings where you "dance" a little bit but it's really safe.
It’s crazy how wind can blow such a large plane around like it’s a balloon in the wind. Insane how powerful Mother Nature is.
Looks like a challanging place to land. I watched acouple and saw pilots under difficult circumstances make good landings, bumpy at first, but when they hit ground they werent in bad shape. Thanks to all the pilots who do this for a living. You have kept me alive.
Next time give it the title “Skilled Pilots Land Planes In Hell-Like Conditions”
David Roberts I’m sorry, what.
@@JaketheDawg222 Dw, he's just thinking that about himself.
maximum respects for those pilots. i take my hat off
What kind of hat?
@@CoreyYoungblood Capitan hat 😎
That must've been horrible 🙈 happy that you're alive 🐒👍
Madeira has different sets of weather but it's mostly windy (I've never been there though)
...well the landings can be 'harrowing' relative to most places, though the extremely few landing incidents (only like 3 or so in the 70s) IMHO certainly speaks to (demonstrates) the superb ability/capability of flight crews despite the often less than ideal landing conditions
So did everyone turn green from getting bounced around so badly? I think I would have nail marks in the arm rests by the time the plane touched down
I remember watching a video about the worst airports according to the Pilots, and almost all agree on Madeira airport. It's a very difficult one.
"Awful weather!". Even birds are complaining.
The Airport in Madeira is pretty difficult to land at, so the title should better be something like "skilled pilots landing in Madeira"
Don't know who titled this vid, but with the crosswinds as bad as they obviously were, I'd say all of these were fantastic landings performed by skilled pilots....
Notice how they all approach that runway in the same manner; It’s the wind. Sometimes pilots would have to sacrifice your comfort for your safety.
Rumor has it, Brussels Airlines is circling Madeira still today.
hahahhahaha veery bad pilot not verry confident
gigiboxa Not bad pilot. Bad weather.
Mikosch2 lol
Ur forgetting about fuel consumption
...easy to spot too, because his landing gear is still deployed!!
Great landings, terrible conditions
