  • Welcome to another beginner build series!! Yes, this series is specifically designed for the newbie to the world of R/C and more specifically to the newbie to the world of Tamiya and the Tamiya Hornet. The Tamiya Hornet is one of the most iconic cars that Tamiya ever produced. For many growing up in the 80's, this is the car that started off their obsession for radio control. So no matter what your age, you are going to find this an absolute blast to build and to drive!
So if you are brand new to the world of R/C or have never built a Tamiya kit before, I will walk you through everything from start to finish.
In this video we will do Step 15 which is installing the ESC (electronic speed controller). However, we are doing a lot more in this step than just installing the ESC. We are also going to install the receiver and the on/off switch from the ESC. Now depending on your kit, it may have come with a Tamiya ESC or it may have come with a HobbyWing 1060 or you may have chosen to put something else in the car entirely. As I'm using a Tamiya TBLE-04S ESC installing the switch will be relatively easy but if you have a different one it might not be as straightforward. So I'll talk about this a little later on in the video.
Lastly, below is a list of the tools that I would recommend you have on hand. Please note that they are affiliate links which means that if you choose to use any of the links below to buy any of these items, I will earn a little something on the sale so I thank you in advance as it all helps to build and maintain the channel. But please note, you can often find these items at your local hobby store and sometimes, not always, but sometimes the prices might even be cheaper. So before using these links I would recommend seeing if your local hobby store has them in stock. Supporting your local hobby store is preferred in my eyes.
Anyway, I can't wait to help you with your build of the Tamiya Hornet!
Above all enjoy the process! Doesn't matter if you're fast or slow at building an R/C, what matters is you have fun while doing it!
HERE ARE SOME TOOLS THAT I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HAVING FOR THE BUILD:
    TAMIYA SCREWDRIVER SET: amzn.to/3PoJOIN
    TAMIYA SIDE CUTTERS: amzn.to/3Panv9n
    NEEDLE NOSE PLYERS: amzn.to/3ORAJ9J
    EXACTO KNIFE: amzn.to/47N1Prg
    SHOCK PLYERS: amzn.to/45rq2BQ
MUST HAVE FIRST UPGRADE (STRONGLY SUGGEST GETTING BALL BEARINGS FOR THE BUILD)
    FULL BALLBEARING KIT: amzn.to/3QY3Drw

Thanks Dirk! Yeah not sure about the convo at all. Seems like it would give you less options in the long run.

Question: We bought the Hornet Kit, but it did not come with a ESC or speed controller. Do I need to buy this item individually or is it included in the kit?

Morning David! So...what part of the world are you in? You've brought up something that I addressed in another video but I might do a separate video just to answer this question for others as I think it's vitally important. So here's the short answer...before covid you could guarantee that each Tamiya kit came with a Tamiya ESC. After covid, Tamiya ran into supply issues on their own stuff so they made a deal with Hobby Wing to include the HW1060 ESC. Now, in Tamiya kits, it's known as a THW1060 ESC (the THW stands for: Tamiya Hobby Wing) But here's the thing...in Canada, for example, some hobby stores, in order to be able to say they are 100% Canadian stores, are NOT including the ESC which means you have to buy them separately. Which is fine...however...the kits are the same price practically whether an ESC is or is not included in the kit. So I'm afraid to say that in your case you will need to buy the THW1060 ESC separately. You won't find a Tamiya ESC anymore unless you're lucky because they don't exist anymore. Not sure if Tamiya plans on fixing this issue anytime soon. So your best best is to source out the THW1060 as it will be your most affordable option and technically was designed to come with Tamiya kits so it will be perfect. Short answer is you'll need to buy one. Long answer is you'll need to buy one for all of the reasons mentioned above.
