Tamiya Opel Kadett GT/E on the MB-01 Chassis - Steps 20 & 21 - The Front Lower Arms
I have been wanting to bring an MB-01 to the channel for quite some time and now it's finally here! The new Tamiya Opel Kadett GT/E which was only just released in April 2024.
The MB-01 Chassis is quite similar to the newly released BT-01 chassis. In fact not only are a lot of the parts exactly the same, the first 23 steps in the build are identical! The main difference is the MB-01, like all M Series kits, is smaller.
Like the BT-01, the MB-01 can be built as a front motor front wheel drive car or a mid motor rear wheel drive. However, unlike the BT-01 chassis, you cannot build the kit as a front motor rear wheel drive car.
But there is one nice surprise with this kit as you can choose to place the gearbox vertically meaning that not only is the motor installed in a high position but it means the motor is placed in the center of the chassis. This “high position” setting means the car is more stable and equalizes weight distribution across the rear wheels meaning it’s more balanced and the power to the rear wheels will be more equalized.
In this video we will do steps 20 and 21 where we will put together the front lower arms and then attach them to the chassis.
And on a last note, be sure to subscribe and hit that notification button if you'd like to follow along. There may be some frustrating moments in the build series and I intend to show you everything I experience along the way.
Wish me luck!

    Nice shout out to RCJazz, I'm in NZ where they are located, they unfortunately have no stock, you may have got the last one. I like the sound of your build and will follow, I have a BBX to build also and understand all the decisions to make. I considered the spare wheel and decided to go for a spoiler instead, I hope it will look good when I finally build it. I have a sports tuned motor also, and an RZ motor but will see if it needs that upgrade first. I did buy a brushless system but after seeing many others install them and cars doing wheelies, I think it may be too much power. I like your retro thinking, maybe as I'm a child of the 80's?

      Thanks! I've ordered from RCJAzz a couple times now and have really been happy with them. I didn't realize they were in NZ!! Very cool. When I got my servo I'm pretty sure they had a number of them in stock...maybe this video caused the issue lol - whoops...sorry about that :) - The wing idea sounds great...I wonder what that will look like...hmmmm...that would definitely give it a retro feel. Yeah I'm excited to see what a retro build will look and handle like...it's been a challenge so far but I'm determined to make this work. It's taken me forever to get the build done as a result so I'm happy to finally be releasing some. But you're right about power too...there comes a point where the enjoyment of driving a car disappears because you've made the car too fast to even enjoy the look of it..lol - so I'm a retro guy too! Thanks for watching and great to connect with you.

    I spent most of this morning swearing at mine, and then gave in and went looking for a video on how to do it. Like you, I tried various combinations of rings and methods. I’m intrigued 🤔 Have Tamiya included the wrong pinion in the kit ? Or do they expect you to use a weird motor with the car ?

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC 9 днів тому

      Ah yes, intriguing indeed. It's not a wrong pinion, it's a wrong motor. Turns out they REALLY want you to use a brushless motor with this kit. Even says so in the first page of the instructions (as the BBX does NOT come with a motor). Brushless motors have a much longer shaft so the pinion they supply in the kit would work well for whatever brushless motor you choose. But because I decided to do a retro build with this kit I've run into some snags. So...I found a solution...just switch out the pinion for something that will fit a standard silver can.

    • @SANDSCORCHER
      @SANDSCORCHER 9 днів тому

      Ah ha ! Excellent news. I’m glad you’re solving the issue😎👍🏻 Thanks for the clarification. 👍🏻 I picked myself up one last autumn and only had a cursory glance through the box before consigning it to the loft. This has refreshed my memory and I now recall thinking what poor value it seemed at the time considering it’s just four nice dampers and a box filled with plastic sprues. Not a motor or speed controller to be seen🤔 Yet they’ve priced it like a 4WD buggy 🤷🏻‍♂️ It’s useful to know that it needs to be brushless👍🏻 It would be helpful if Tamiya made a combo set that was affordable and readily available in all markets globally, especially if that’s what they expect their customers to install in their products🤔

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC 5 днів тому

      @@SANDSCORCHER I'm pretty sure they have designed this kit as a more "professional" or "advanced builder" car so that if you buy it you're probably going to want to add a bunch of upgrades including a faster motor. But like you, I would like to see that they have a combo kit available for those that don't need this to run races and just use it as a fun off road 2WD RC. The biggest issue I have with it isn't even the motor...it's the fact that you have to use a low profile servo for the steering. Mainly because, depending on your knowledge base of servos, you could find that you're spending big $$$ on that one item alone. I know people have mentioned aliexpress etc as places you might find a cheap servo but that's another rub if you ask me. Buy a high end kit and then just finish it off with a cheap servo to keep the cost down. In Canada, some of the low profile servos from Futaba and other known brands can be $100 and even $200 which I'm not willing to pay. Mine was $66CDN but I ordered it straight from Hong Kong. But again, there should be a "combo kit" that gives you the ability to buy this car with all the goodies so that you don't have to source everything out to keep costs reasonable. But that's just my opinion. Anyway, I've been having fun trying to build this as a "retro kit" so hopefully if someone isn't wanting to go brushless and just wants to use this car for fun I'll have done all the leg work for them.

    • @SANDSCORCHER
      @SANDSCORCHER 5 днів тому

      @FastFreddyRC It certainly seems that way😀👍🏻 Hats off to you for your efforts.😎 The problem I have with cars is that I buy them with best of intentions to just build them stock and run them. This NEVER happens though. I end up spending the next two to ten years sourcing all of the hop-ups that exist so I can build the car perfect out of the box. This is why I’ve not even considered building the BBX yet. My shopping list for it was terrifying within a matter of weeks😆

    • @SANDSCORCHER
      @SANDSCORCHER 5 днів тому

      @FastFreddyRC Oh I forgot … Don’t even get me started on low profile servos ! 😆😆😆 I bought one a year or two back and I’m sure it was nearly a hundred pounds. The trouble is, I’ve only got that one. And the last three or four 2WD buggies I’ve bought all need a low profile servo🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😆

    I decided to get the green Grasshopper in Japan over a BBX as I can get them in Malaysia. The BBX was 197 USD at Super Rajikon and the hop ups available was very tempting so next trip I will pick one up.

      Very cool...great choice! and wow...that's a great price for the BBX. In Canada the retail price is over $400CDN at most shops. Some sell them for a little less but not much.

    The inconsistency is quite frustrating. Because prices vary between stores for the same kit it's hard to tell which is due to price variations or having an included esc. Some kits have two SKUs with or without a "-60A" on the end of the kit number e.g. 58418 and 58418-60A but some stores list the "-60A" SKU and says includes ESC, some say without. Seems like the only way to know for sure is to check the box for a sticker, but that's not possible when ordering online. And there's also some kits which never come with ESC......

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC 10 днів тому

      You're right! It is VERY frustrating and there are no clear reasons for why some places choose to get the kits with or without the ESC's. Some places charge the same regardless, others charge less for the units without the ESC's. I just think it should be one way or the other so there's no confusion. And you're right...if you saw the box before you bought you would know right away if it comes with one or it doesn't. And yes, good point...there are kits that never have and never will come with ESC's...the new BBX for example. The more "professional" kits leave it up to the customer to buy what they want for them...which makes sense, but again, you end up needing to really be up on the kits to know which ones do, or do not, come with ESC's. Thanks for watching!

    Great ! I have the same but was not courageous enough to use the Fiat body (rightly so, as after 3 "attempts", the chosen Yaris body is already scratched everywhere 😢). Welcome aboard, and I can't wait to see what you'll use as electronics 😊🤝

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC 12 днів тому

      Yeah...I might be a bit leary of using the body but we'll see how this moves when I get everything installed. Don't really want to damage the body but it is a speed challenge! :)

    Awesome or should I say Excellent! I’m doing the VW Golf II Rally with the Kerman Ghia body. I do have the Abarth kit to build later but right now it’s simply a bunch of donor parts if anything goes crazy with my main vehicle. I’ll be keeping it fairly tame with brushed but it’s still a lot of fun.

    • @FastFreddyRC
      @FastFreddyRC 12 днів тому

      Cool! I'm not going to be going to crazy with this either. I'm still going to be entering the brushed category but hopefully with the few items I have on order this thing should still move lol
