Nice job! Where there’s a will, there’s a way. I appreciate seeing someone work with what they have to make it function. These kind of projects are fun when you can do it on the cheap. I have an ‘88 F150 that I’m doing a similar build. The biggest difference is I used a local machine since we have one here haha. I hope it all works out in the end for you.
Cleaned off and hand lapped in the valve faces and seats, bringing them back on my Bronco's 5.0 litre. Then replaced the valve seals. That was 150,000 miles ago, still going strong at almost half a million. Took a bit of time, but I've got it. Keep at it friend. Malcolm Ottawa Valley
Rings back some memories back in the 2000s before I sold my 90 notch, bought a 91 5.0 from a mustang for $200. Cleaned, home honed because no signs of ring wear, stock cam advanced 4 deg, TW heads, GT40 intake, etc. had all the upgrade parts so I had a solid engine for around $500 that I ran for about two years trouble free. Ford high iron blocks were great
I heard an old man say that he had rather build gummed up engine than an engine that looks clean and you don’t know what caused it to fail . He said sludge was better than dry.
I found an old 350hp Chevy 396 abandoned in a field. The motor was frozen so I disassembled it, honed the cylinders, micro polished the cast crank and reassembled the short block with new rings and bearings. I spent money on the heads getting a 3 angled valve job. I bought a Sig Erson Hi-Flo 2 cam and springs. Even though they were oval port heads, I used a rectangular factory aluminum hi-rise because it was free. 800 Holley double pumper and Heddman headers. I installed the 396 into my '65 Malibu SS with a 4 speed and 4:88's. I had a 10,000 RPM nitrous unit but only ever used it once against a 435hp 427 '69 Corvette.
Well done to you, I would like to do this one day, even rebuilding a v8 motor mounted on a stand in my shed would be good enough for me to go start and listen to every now an then.
Yeah man good video .sound good too.im in the same boat you .im about to rebuild a 460 tunnel ram 2 holley 600.and a nice cam and msd box .mine blew up so im gonna take my stuff off and put whats still good on the new junkyard engine .. Keep up the good videos man.im on a very very very tight budget and live out my mini van with my dog Frankenstein. Gonna start my tear down this week and just trying to get some energy up.ohh its going in my 93 notch thanks bro.
All credit too you brother I did my trade as a ford mechanic I think you call it tech school in the us in Australia its an apprentice you did a good job on the rebuild I have one in a td cortina its a smaller car and had a 2.0L 4 cylinder from the factory and I installed a 302 Windsor in it
I bought a low mileage 5.0 with AOD out of 94-95 Mustang GT for 300. I bought a set of nice Complete 3 bar GT 40 heads from a 94-95 Cobra which they have the 1.7 Crane roller rockers 600 dollars had them ported and polished for 500 which I had new springs installed. I have no plans on touching the short block other then I bought a Jegs Hydraulic Roller Cam with a .510 lift 286 duration also buying a set of Ford performance roller lifters and a double roller timing chain. I have a Offenhouser 360 dual plane intake. Thinking of running a regular 650 Holley quick fuel carb. MSD 6AL box. I think the cost for everything complete maybe under 2,500 that includes gaskets, chrome valve covers and rear sump chrome oil pan from a Ford pickup which it work nice in my 30-31 Model A on a 32 chassis.
I'm hoping to do this to mine, Never done this before, not sure if I can do it but I am gonna try it anyway. Hoping for the best. Thanks for your video, it give much encouragement.
It's not as complicated as people make it out to be. Just be prepared to do it over again with the knowledge that you learn from the first time. By the third time you will have it down pat.
My 65 ford 289 out of my 64-1/2 mustang cost me $1,500 machine shop and $1,200 in parts. Gonna drop the engine in this week and do the break in then off to the dyno to see what she lays down. Original 3 speed manual transmission. Hopefully corona passes quickly so i can do some cruisin soon..
Definitely. Not very profitable. I looked into starting a shop. There's a reason everyone is quitting. Much more cost effective to have a giant factory that just makes crate engines out of old blocks.
This is a cool video I’m doing something similar I have a 1966 all original four-speed I threw the motor and transmission out the vehicle I bought a brand new C6 transmission of Jegs for the cost of 3800$ and I have a motor of a 1990 GT Mustang spent about 2500 on parts $1000 on machine shop board it out to 308 40 over size pistons also have an e303 cam and I can’t wait for it to be done also your Video is inspiring
That thumbnail, the engine holes for the headers almost looked like the shape of Chevy emblems for a second. I’m a Ford guy hands down. But was just thinking that for a 350 motor, Chevy emblem shape manifolds would be kind of a cool touch for someone looking for a show-er
Who says machine work is needed? The machine shop. Right. Just like the parts house says the problem is you need such and such parts. Had a ‘70 car with 318. People told me, you need to rebuild that engine. “You know it needs an overbore”. Drove it for 225k miles. Always cranked and ran even in 15 degree or 95 degree weather, first time I turned the key. When I parked it for restoration, it was using 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles. Not great but not bad. If you want eek out maximum performance and you’ve got money to blow. Then get it overbored, decked, line bored, rods sized, etc. A decent engine will give good service for many years if just taken care of. Seen it happen with many engines over the years. No need to monkey with it because people say “that’s what you’re supposed to do “.
I did the same thing, emery cloth for the crank polishing and the good ol monkey ball cylinder hone. New bearings can't remember if I did rings or not. Good as new.
Is it possible to convert a 302 carbureated engine off a 1968 to 1974 Ford Econoline van to EFI by swapping the carb the plenum and install a 5.0 efi plenum off of a 1996 F150 or 1996 Ford Explorer 302 plenum throttle body and injectors besides installing the ecu?
I'd put a .005 over ring set in it and fit the end gaps; however might have been counter productive with that ridge . But NEVER cut a ridge . If it's that bad the pistons are absolute junk .
Great job, I'm about to pull the engine in my 65' Stang it got the 87' F150 stock(I think) in it and wanting to put a Thumper Cam for a little bit of sound. Any advice you can give me, I'm pretty mechanically incline and got some bit of a brain to throw in.

No I'm waiting for my Trump check to buy seats and interior. A lot of mice tore up the interior and I don't want to risk getting sick. Had to put it on the back burner while the wife goes to school and I start my business up. It's an expensive hobby! But I did the valves and new wires and spark plugs last weekend and it's running better. Just odds and ends after the interior but it's expensive! Thanks for the comment friend! cool project - i like the mustang!
Never would of thought to use oven cleaner ty for tip building a 302 myself
Be careful. I used oven cleaner and my stuff flash rusted in about 20 minutes. The oven cleaner took the paint off and everything.
Thank you for the tip 👍
Yeah definitely wash it with water and then apply a coat of oil to any bare metal or paint asap.

Good job 👍
Tried MSD BUT instead went with a GM style distributor for ford and a blaster 2 coil for my 1968 Ranchero then later swapped the 302 for a 351windsor
Being that it's a truck block, I'm a bit surprised that it doesn't have 4-bolt main caps.
Good point. I'm not that familiar with Ford's...

I know this was 4 years ago but where did you buy gaskets that you was able to do The entire engine for under $200?
There should be a link in the description.
How is the engine holding up, Is it using oil more than usual? Im doing a 3/4 freshen up on a Windsor for a AU Fairmont Ghia here in Australia.

Amazingly cheap engine to build.
So that was a couple year's back? Still running or did it blow??

Have you had any issues using an efi motor with a carb?
Not really once you switch over the intake it's the same as an old carb engine.
