Great video. I’m 50 and am contemplating a career change. I’m going to start an ABN program next year and then go to an NP program. It is comforting seeing others have done it before me.
Thanks for the comment and for watching the video. Also, congrats on the career change. This is the same route I took to get to NP school, ASN to RN-to-BSN, and now MSN/NP. I took he ASN path because it allowed me to start working as an RN sooner, getting the clinical experience, while I worked on the next academic step. Please consider joining our community of students. While most are NP related, there are still great nuggets for RN students as well! Join Here >> bit.ly/PMHNPJourneyCommunity
Great to find you. In 50’s. Trying to between masters of counseling or RN. Have you shared your school names? Its been so long since being in school so worried I will behind on the technology.
LPN at 47, RN at 50, BSN at 52... debating PMHNP next... would love to hear you break down the ROI & why you felt going forward at our age was a good decision! Also, any feedback on how you think the PMHNP compares to the RN program would be interesting to hear as well.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, these are great questions. I’ll plan a video this week to explain. Some of the question I answered in my video about why I choose PMHNP, so you might check that out.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Was there any part of the video that you found particularly helpful?? Please consider subscribing to the channel and also joining our communtiy!
Hi Rick, just wanted to drop some words of appreciation for your posts. I’m nearing 50 and starting my program this summer. So reassuring and refreshing to hear your perspectives based on your own experience. I’m surrounded by colleagues who put me down for even contemplating this path for one reason or another. But I’m determined. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject.
Congratulations on getting started! It is disappointing to hear you have people discouraging you from doing this. Who are they to tell you what you should do with your career! I think being a more seasoned when you start this gives you a tremendous advantage and I also think patients will have more confidence in you just based upon age. Please keep informed as to your progress!
This was the best video I have seen about NP school ! I’m an RN BSN and applied for FNP but still not sure I am up for it . I’m 51 and finished my BSN two years ago . Thank you for taking the time to make this video as I’m sure you are very busy !
Thanks for the nice comment and for watching the video. You CAN do this! Just watch some of my other videos about preparing and the “must do” things before you begin. You might also want to join our community (link in description). You’ll get access to our folder where I have uploaded a lot of checklists, cheat sheets, and resources you can use. When do you start school?
I love your videos, and im 825 prescribers. I came from third world country. At 42 I get my RN and I want to move forward. Would u be able to make a video on best nursing jobs for male nurse. Thanks.
Congrats on becoming an RN and thanks for taking time to comment. While my channel is about my journey to becoming a nurse practitioner, I think your idea is a good one. I will consider it as a future video!
Thank you so much for this. At 51 I am contemplating if NP school is the route for me. You’ve inspired me and concluded several of the pondering questions.
Faye, thank you for your kind words, for taking time to watch my videos, and for commenting. I am always happy to answer any questions you have from my experience in school. You might also watch the video I did about choosing an NP specialty (ua-cam.com/video/Mc0luUaDwJo/v-deo.html). For a veteran nurse I think you need to approach this subject a bit differently. Also, please consider subscribing if you think it is appropriate. Let me know what you decide!
Yes… that is the plan for when I start my own practice, at least initially. Part of my clinical rotation days are spent doing telepsych calls with my preceptor. Heck, we have even considered relocating to Spain and doing telepsych work!!
I am a versatile writer, and my specialties include discussions, term papers, essays, DNP and Capstone projects, proposals, bibliographies, research analysis, PowerPoint presentations, infographics among other school projects.
Hello all, new subscriber here! I was struggling with the whole ageism thing and had a conversation with the president of the first nursing program I attended and was assured that there were a lot of people of older age who were in attendance. That was for RN. I was 44 in my first nursing program (Associates Degree), I finished my BSN two years ago, passed the NCLEX on my second attempt and turning 50 soon and I am RN and currently a FNP student! I also struggled with the fact that being older, do I have the mindset to retain the information and make it through NP school!?! I am more than half way done with my classes and will be starting clinicals in a couple of months. I just left a job that I loved making really good money and that coincided with working as an FNP, but the hours were too much! My grades were starting to suffer, So I left that job for a job that offered less hours and for wayyyy less money, and with no benefits (health coverage), but my grades have improved significantly and school is not forever!!! So, don’t let the ageism issue stop you! You can do it!!!! The devil is a liar!!!😇
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, and thanks for subscribing! You offer a valuable insight to questions I am sure many others are asking. When to you graduate FNP school?
I was in my 50’s with I started! You can do it. Most of the students in my nursing school cohort were in their 30’s, so you won’t be alone. Thanks for watching and commenting, please consider subscribing to my channel.
Like I said in the video, you are NEVER too old to learn something new. Just consider all the factors and, if it makes sense for you, your career, and your family, then do it! Also, please consider subscribing so UA-cam will put this content in front of others who are asking the same question!
Great video I’m in the same boat demographically as you described. I’m in my very first quarter for PMHNP. I am very excited! It’s awesome that you would share your journey from your perspective with us. Although I’m excited I am also a tad bit nervous…. But I’ve been here before. Thank you ☺️
I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching the video. Please consider subscribing to the channel and also joining our community. Keep up updated on your progress…. You CAN do this!!
Im 49 and dropped out of college because my grades were so bad. I had a 0.67 GPA which is basically failing (nearly) every class I ever took, haven't had any schooling since then (25 years ago) and I have never had any form of job. I was also in special ed. I want to go to nursing school but I'm wondering if that is actually possible. I also no nothing about medicine.
Thank you for your comment and for watching the video. I commend you for considering nursing school. It is not easy and it takes a lot of dedication and effort to complete. First, whether you want to complete a 2 year or 4 year school, you will have to take all of your state required core classes, i.e… English, math, literature, etc… before you start into nursing school. I suggest you decide which school you want to attend and apply. If you are accepted, you can meet with a guidance counselor to help map out your classes and get access to resources that will help you. Keep me informed on what you decide to do!
Have heard that there are too many NPs in certain fields in certain areas, making it harder to land an NP job at all, and then those NP jobs paid less than hoped for as there was no scarcity of applicants to fill those jobs, so employers get away with paying less for NP positions also. So it could be very area dependent on need and salary, and if you can't be or don't want to be flexible and willing to relocate, possibly multiple times, in order to chase a job or a botter salary. Might be other options to consider first to improve your job happiness before years or hard study and tuition costs, especially if you are older already. Sad state of affairs that improving our knowlege levels could not be worthwhile, but out entire health care system is currently messed up. Just truly analyze all your options as this presenter advised, then make the decision you think best for you!
Good points! Thank you for watching the video and commenting. I did another video about the process I used, including much of what you wrote, in choosing my NP specialty. I also have a checklist to use that guides a person through the process that is available to all of our community members. It is a great resource for anyone thinking about NP school and where to focus.
Don’t let age limit you! What is stopping you from going to NP school? 😊
I am 54 years old just finished NP school and starting my first NP job. Age is a number, never too old.
I agree 100%! Congrats on finishing. I am sure you lived experiences will be a tremendously valuable asset to the care you give your patients!!
