Thank you for this video! A smart FNP once told me to dual major if I can, so I took a chance and applied to one. now I will be starting my dnp dual concentration FNP/PMH this July!
As a Certified FNP, Your previous videos encouraged me to go back to school and start Psych program with the goal of open my own practice. I should be done in December. I am just thrilled to hear all the opportunities this dual degrees can bring to me. I am also a DNP and MPH. I would love to connect with you if you are not opposed. Thank you 🙏 for all your videos. You made my day 😊
ohhh niceee!!! i am so glad i was able to help you to go back to school. Im sure youre doing an amazing job and im sure youll accomplish all of your dreams, be sure to make sure you remember me when you are doing big things lol. Yesss! lets for sure connect
I’ve been a FNP about 5 years working in inpatient psychiatry when I realized last year that the biggest opportunity for me was to get the PMHNP cert. 💯 agree with your rationales brother. I’m finishing my PMHNP at JHU this August! Good luck to you!
hey congrats, what are your thoughts on that process? I’m a new grad nurse who wanted to practice as a psych np. Should I do my FNP then post certificate for PMHNP? Would love feedback :)
I did it backwards lol I’ve been a psych nurse for years and I went through the FNP program first with the intention of being dual-certified. 😬 I’ll be starting PC- PMHNP program the beginning of next year. You will do great!
I'm fully on board w/you and I think it's great that you're going back for your FNP. Like you said, the monetary gains might not be much, but I think it's always a wise investment to invest in your own knowledge base, especially if you'll be gaining useful knowledge that will enhance your current practice/career. I've been watching your videos since before I went back to grad school, and now I'll be sitting for my PMHNP boards this summer! Thank you for the great content and I look forward to hearing more about your journey!
Thanks for sharing this message. I’ve been weighing my options between FNP or PMHNP. I have 3 years of Trauma ICU experience and a psych degree. I’m leaning towards FNP and expand to psych later. Good luck on your journey!
I don’t know if NP is Worth spending all my life time for because i have tried youtube l associates and some others and still failed 4 attempt. I feel so frustrated don't know what to do anymore don’t even have time for my own kids any more 💔💔💔😔😔.
Frustration is a very positive sign. It means that the solution to your problem is within range, but what you're currently doing isn't working, and you need to change your approach in order to achieve your goal.
I have a cousin who never studied much, we studied together but she gives most of her time to her phone than her studies after writing the RPN test last month she passed and i failed😢, i asked her how she did it, just found out she got help from Mrs Cynthia
I’ll keep on studying till i pass no matter how many times i fail, I’ll advise you don’t give up because we all have come a long way so keep try till you get there one day or better still go get help from Mrs Cynthia
Thank you so much for this information and your insight! I’m starting at a psych outpatient facility as an FNP and am seriously considering a post grad program if I really love it. I also have a bachelor in business and want to start my own small private practice within the next five years. Again, thank you and I wish you much success!
I hope you look beyond prescription medications to natural healing methods with prescriptions at #20 option. Daniel Amen has a some great books and videos for ADHD, depression/anxiety combos, obsessive compulsive, addictions (Change your brain, change your life). Thank you for filling in the detaiils.
You are so welcome and im sure you decided what is best for you. Maybe youll end up doing it or maybe you wont, but regardless, i wish you the best of luck in everything. thank you for your support
As more healthcare providers become employees, it looks like more expensive overcredentialing at practitioner's expense of money and time, and often debt: CRNA program went from master's to doctorate this year. NPs are moving to doctorate in 2025. PTs need a doctorate. This is unsustainable.
Wow such a timely video! Currently in FNP school and I have really been thinking about becoming a Psych NP as well. Thanks so much for breaking down the process! I know you will do amazing!
I am a dual certified FNP/PMHNP = my company/colleagues seem to have limited understanding how I can use my FNP in my role of PMHNP. Anyone know the can do and don'ts?
With PA, you will need MD collaboration for independent private practice while with NP you can have full practice in multiple states with no MD collaboration needed. MD collaboration comes with high cost and it's own set of issues. PA don't have full practice. He has his own private practice.
I've been watching your videos over the last month or so really trying to decide between FNP vs PMHNP. I really want to focus on adults with depression and anxiety. I've concluded that I can treat these people as a FNP without having to do a PMHNP program. I would of course continually take yearly ceus, courses on anxiety and depression. Would you agree? What are your thoughts?
I’m a new subscriber and I have been watching your videos and it’s extremely informative and inspired me to become a Psych NP. I am currently in nursing school and interested in becoming a mental health nurse and move up and continue my education after I get some experiences under my hand. 1. My question is I’ve had a difficult upbringing and have been constant denied of mental illness and ever since it has become a passion for me to go towards that area. Would it be frown upon if you have diagnosis of anxiety, depression, Adhd…. ( should I be saying this?) Like does it effect my abilities to go down that road? 2. I want to be a travel nurse and take advantage of my youth before settling down/family etc. what could that look like travel mental-health nurse? Has anyone shared their/or your experiences if this is worth trying ? I’m a new student, so I feel hesitant to ask these “silly questions”, I’m in an accelerated BSN program and feel like the pressure is on and wondering if I was in a RN program would’ve been better or?
I hope you are making great progress in your journey! I am currently pursuing my PMHNP. I understand a certain degree of insecurity around having certain mental disorders while pursuing a career in mental health. In my opinion, you can look at it as an added perspective on mental health. You can understand the perspective of a patient and the perspective of a provider. If this is something that is getting in the way of you feeling worthy or eligible to provide mental health care, I would suggest speaking with a counselor or therapist to help unpack that. Each nurse brings a unique contribution to the nursing practice. If you are passionate about nursing, we need your contribution too!
New nurse (dual bachelors one in Nusing one in Biology) here working at a short term residential mental health institution for adolescents (Newport Academy). I am enjoying it(so far) or at least not hating the work I am doing. I am looking at schools in and around Minnesota for FNP and subsequently PMHNP (dual NP) that I can attend while working. I am looking to get my Masters not Doctors because it seems cheaper and most health organizations aren't worried about the difference unless they are hiring someone to work in an administrative position, which I am not interested in anyways. Have you heard anything good or bad about any online programs? Have you heard anything good or bad about University of North Dakota or Mount Marty University in South Dakota. I've been told FNP first then PMHNP is the most efficient way to do it (Dual NP). Let me know your thoughts?
the thing I wonder about is the increased liability of being dual certified? Wouldn't you be held to a different standard treating a psych pt, and maybe not addressing medical conditions because you also have the FNP?
@@LifeofaPsychNP definitely something to look into. I'd hate to have a psych visit, do a ROS and the patient mentions some sort of heart issue. A few months later getting sued by the pt for not addressing the heart issues "because I told them and they are an FNP"...
@@djxpress understandable but at the same time FNPs aren’t held to treat psych even tho they have psych issues. Plus we don’t even have to do ROS anymore for billing if using MDM in the outpatient setting
@@LifeofaPsychNP they aren't held to treat psych because they aren't PMHNPs. But I would hedge my bets that dual certified FNP/PMHNPs are held to a different standard. Same goes for PMHNP/FNPs. Since both are dual certified, they most likely need to address both areas if the patient brings it up.

Is it possible to venture into both same time?

John's Hopkins University
I'm an FNP who is adding a PMHNP certificate 🎉 Excited to hear your thoughts. I have lots of dual certified colleagues

lets do it together!! youll go psych, ill go FNP and we can help each other lol

My constant dilemma is choosing one specialty - I should have been a PA
Depends on the state, not a good option for all. In Maryland, NP all the way.
I have that in mind too. I will get dual certification.

Is this true? Will you need a doctorate to be an NP in 2025 ?

How on earth are you working, doing coursework, clinicals and UA-cam?!
you just need to skip few things--- skip shower or skip brushing your teeth. What I meant to say is, sacrifice. Not joking.
I’m currently in my second year of FNP program and i too want to add the pmhnp as well and be dual certified
Is there school that offer dual certification on that?
Please do a video on the universities offering this dual program
Congratulations, sooo proud of you. Continue to excel
thank you so much, i appreciate it. im trying to continue to grow
My preceptor has both certifications. She went for FNP first and then PMHNP.
nicee. yeah, usually people go from being a FNP to PMHNP but rarely PMHNP to FNP lol
@@LifeofaPsychNP Yeah, she told me that she makes more money with the PMHNP. She went from making 5 figures to 6 figures.
If you can only afford 1 over the other which would you recommend? Sounds like a fnp can work in psych?

About to graduate from CSULA this May. Have been watching these videos since about a year before applying. Really motivating to see the possibilities
heck yeah!!! congrats! are you graduating in may from PMHNP or FNP? if PMHNP, Tell Dr. Zamil whats up for me lol
PMHNP!
Biggest negative, THE COST!! Seriously, how can it be worth it to get dual certifications? Is someone else paying for it? And 18 months to complete!
Why not the PA route like you said if you had the choice you would be a PA
With PA, you will need MD collaboration for independent private practice while with NP you can have full practice in multiple states with no MD collaboration needed. MD collaboration comes with high cost and it's own set of issues. PA don't have full practice. He has his own private practice.
how you going to make time for clinicals???
Is it worth it to have more than one specialty?
tysm
I think that CRNA/PMHNP would work if you wanted to open a ketamine clinic. I see a lot of CRNAs getting their PMHNP but never the other way around
What about psych np plus clinical psychology threapist?
Pmhnp’s are psychotherapists
You don't need it because as psych NP you can bill for therapy like psychologist.
How long does it take for a PMHNP to get their FNP?
it depends on the school but based on my research and the schools ive looked into, its about 1-2 years still
