Great tutorial Liz. Very well explained and demonstrated. I didn't know the inhibition layer would cure when another gel layer was applied. This was perfect. Now I won't feel the need to cleanse the nail between each layer👍🙂💅. Thanks for sharing😀👏
Thank you for making this video. I do my nails at home with EBay products and would keep my nails under the lamp for a very long time because I thought the inhibition layer was a sign of an inferior product that took several minutes to cure.
Finally, this is the first time ever I understand whether or not I should wipe that sticky layer! You are amazing sharing this information with us. Thank you! I will continue watching you!
Thank you so much for producing this video about curing gel nail polish. I just recently purchased my first set of gel nail polish, lamp and uv protective gloves. I tried my new gel polish but hadn't yet received my base or top coat gel nail polish yet. Being that I couldn't wait I just had to try it on my nails to see how pretty they were. I didn't really realize that the base and top coats were so important. My uv lamp timed finished but my nails were of course tacky-sticky. I tried the plastic wrap trick. And, wola! It actually worked. So, thank you so much. Great, tutorial. Thank you, Tricia Rapstine
Thank you so much for this! I have been struggling trying to figure out why my nails weren't cured all the way in between coats. You saved my life! Love your channel! You are so informative and knowledgeable! I love that you share your expertise! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
You shouldn't wipe with alcohol until after the clear top coat. These inhibition layers help the next layer you apply adhere. If you wipe the color layer, you are likely removing some of the pigments that are mixed in to the gel.
Thank you so much for this, I've had so much conflicting information that was never backed up by explanation. You are a star. Clearly explained so I totally understand what is happening. Thank you, thank you, thank you. :-)
Hey Liz, thank you for all of your videos, I really learned a lot from you. I'm not a professional nail tech, I dedicated to do my own nails after my nail lady canceled my appointment 2 days before my winter vacation trip to Poland, I figured that I'm a fast learner and I've seen her do my nails 10 times, so I can do it on my own. I remember what she was doing, so I googled what you need to do nails and I bought it all and without learning any more about it I did my own nails before the trip. The nails weren't perfect but they where OK for the first time. Then I found all the nail techs on UA-cam that where so informative like Suzie, Celina and Jessica nails, that helped a lot, but it wasn't until I found your Fundamental nail playlist that I really start to understand the nail process more. I've watched all of your fundamental nail videos and my nails are lasting a lot longer now. I mix my own cleanser like you suggested (only the highest alcohol % I could find in my county was 70%, not 90%, but I keep on looking). My nails look almost perfect thanks to your videos, the only problem I'm having now is that sometimes some of the nails are lifting (not long after I finish the set) I'm starting to think it is because I don't clean (prep) enough the nail before I put product on, I'm afraid to file to much so that I don't damage the nail bed... What do you think? How do you know you are filling off the dead cuticle and the natural shine and not the actual nail?
That's e question l keep asking too,now l just go around the cuticle with a cuticle pusher and scrape all the cuticle off the nail then use a e file cuticle bit but never use any pressure doing this. Rubbing your nails with acetone can also help as it can show up the imperfections of the nail and what needs to be removed.
Lifting could also be due to the layers of base coat, builder, polish etc are too thick. Use thin layers and see if that helps. Also prep is key. Make sure you clean cuticle area well and don't let any of the layers of polish etc touch the skin. Hope this helps
To be honest, I’m so happy I found your channel! Not only do I love your personality, your work and knowledge is the bread and butter to this whole thing! I came from suzies channel but I’m a gel tech (learned with acrylic in my early days but when I went gel, I never looked back lol) and she’s very knowledgeable about her work as well but I’ve learned so much on my gel technique from you and so much more! I love the “sciencey” part of it all! Thanks so much for making these videos! Ur awesome👻
Thank you! Your video was very clear and concise! I was always confused why sometimes people would cleanse the gel nails and sometimes they wouldn't... They must've been using a top coat that didn't need to be cleaned. Mystery finally solved! (lol)
Thank you for your explanation. For the longest time I thought it was like painting oil paint. With oil paint, you have to make sure the under layer is dry before adding the new layer or else the wet layer would trap all the moisture causing it to crack. The way you explained it made so much sense. I was putting my nail under the lamp for like 5 minutes and was wondering if I need a new lamp.
This is great, I fixed one of my nails last night as it had a break in it and it’s my first time using the system I have, I panicked that it wasn’t cured enough!
I'm a DIY and I'm trying gel polish and I had no idea I seen so many videos and I would do it pop it in the lamp and thinking it was set and it be sticky thank you so much now I can use all the beautiful gel polish I just bought love God bless you IM GOING DO MY NAILS TODAY..LOL
Omg thankyou!!!! Why does no other gel tutorial say that it will feel sticky, but it's okay and continue adding colour? I kept thinking something was wrong with the stuff I bought argh!!
Another great video! I love the ones where you really explain what’s going on chemically, instead of just a how-to. I have a question about ingredients: I’ve heard some techs say HEMA is bad. Is it worse than other methacrylates for allergies or something like that?
It would be great if you made a video about gel nail kit and all the tools needed to do gel nails.. I'm starting to do my own nails but I'm confused about the tools Thanx.. 💜
So I have a ? . My nail people never put clear base coat on first and when I first started going there I’d never seen this done at any salon before. They said it’s the way they do it. Is that normal? Is it ok to do that?
This is by far the most helpful video in my search for an answer to my question! This is the first video I've seen from you and I'm eager to learn more from you! My question is: if I clean the inhibition layer from my nails (base or color), will I need to buff the shine or reapply bonder to continue my gel mani? I believe the answer is no after watching this video. Correct me if I'm wrong!
I love that you explain the process so clearly! But I have a doubt, what if the sticky layers of the colour gel polish have pigment in the residue? I mean, if you use a clear top coat, the brush is gonna get pigment on and you'll end up with a dirty top coat. What to do then?
This is exactly what I asked! This is why I wipe on the final color coat before top coat. I honestly feel like the wet product would contaminate the brush.
I just came across your channel as my gel wouldn't cure. So I'm a newbie. I honestly thought that was someone's hand since it is so realistic, then you set it down and it was just a random finger. Lol
Thank you Liz. You are fantastic, as usual. I didn't think to ask you about this, although I wasn't sure about the inhibition layer. I am glad somebody asked. Thank you for explanation❤
Very interesting Liz... I am understanding gel formulas a lot better now! Thank you for this clear explanation & demonstration! I have been doing my own gel mani’s for a couple months and I am obsessed. I am not fond of the LED/UV lamp but it’s not like I use it everyday or weekly. My last manicure I had on was a polygel overlay with gel polish for color. My goodness those lasted for 4WKS! After removing I applied regular gel polish and after the whole manicure (base, 3 thin layers, curing in between 30 sec) - I applied my no wipe top coat- and there was still that sticky inhibition layer!! I was freaking out because it’s a no wipe... so I was like what the heck 🤨🧐 so I moved on to my other hand and it did the same thing... so I kept curing and after curing for 2 MIN the sticky layer went away..... so now watching this video a week later, there must have been oxygen on my nail plate and now that I think back I did not truly prep my nails either.. I just pushed my cuticles back and went straight for the base.. usually I will buff the surface a little to remove shine, apply a dehydrator than apply base, I wonder if that was the problem!? 🤔😱🙄🙄 🙈😂 thank you again! Happy Thursday! 💕💕
The Nail Hub I will look into that! It’s the first time something like that has happened with curing. I have a SUNUV 48 W & it usually cures everything including polygel.. so peculiar!

Thanks for this video. That's so helpful! I put a polygel overlay on over my natural nails for the first time yesterday. It came out GREAT! But I skipped topcoat b/c my goal is to have the polygel as structure for my weak nails as a base for regular polish. But I have a couple questions: 1) should I have used gel topcoat first? Would that be better before using regular nail polish? 2) Can I put a new layer of polygel on this layer of polygel even though I already removed the sticky layer? 3) Or, do I need to put a new layer of base on the current polygel first? Thanks so much!!!!
What would you do if you accidentally touched an inhibition layer before the top coat? Say first color coat, then you go to apply 2nd color coat and you accidentally touch it and get your finger print in it lol? Would you cleanse or just go right over it? This is totally something I see myself doing lol. Thank you for the amazing videos!!!!!
Okay... so I have a question about the adhesive layer! I have a no cleanse top coat from IBD gel . I use only IBD products and I make my own nails. It's bonder, base coat, hard gel, led polish, top coat. it's been, what, about 3 years that I use those products and of course I haven't finished them. I see that my no cleanse top coat has issues... by that I mean it is sticky when cured the standard time I always cured it, which is about 30 seconds under an LED lamp. I have a LED lamp, new, which works just fine... any ideas why is this happening? and how can I test it or fix it or something? thanks 😊
Awesome way to explain fully!! Tfs💜💖💜. My question is are no wipe top coats really no inhibition layer? Or do they have some still. As we do buff powders into it.🤔 Thank you!!
What about when using polygel, soft gel and hard gel to scult a full nail extension? Is it okay to remove the tacky inhibition layer of the base coat from the natural nail, and will it affect the final outcome?
Thanks for posting this! I tried gel for the first time and thought my lamp must not have worked so then I tried to wipe it all off and discovered the cured layer underneath 😔. Once I get to my top coat how can I get the inhibition layer off without getting it on my skin?
What do you wipe the sticky layer with? Is 70% alcohol good or 100%?? I’ve noticed that even after wiping my top coat with my 70% alcohol wipes it still leaves marks on my nails!! Please help

Such a fantastic video! Does this theory apply to the new method of sticking full cover tips with the polygel underneath? That polygel is cured because it is covered with the tip?
Stay away from HEMA concentrations over 5%. If you see it listed as the first or second ingredient in a gel then don't put it on. HEMA is causing lots of allergies in our industry.

Very informative ❤ I recently became allergic to gel and was wondering if you have any tips on how you could help try to reserve it?
Stay away from HEMA concentrations over 5%. If you see it listed as the first or second ingredient in a gel then don't put it on. HEMA is causing lots of allergies in our industry.
Love the video, very informative 🌸👍🏾👍🏾
How to seal/cap natural nails? Mine always separate from the gel
When I scrub the inhibition layer the color become dull and lose the shine, what happened? How can I fixed.?
Sounds like the gel is not fully cured. It could be the lamp you are using is not powerful enough.
