  • In this video, we will take a look at my initial budget and plans for my small homestead. The land is under contract and will be ours in a couple weeks. So it is time to plan the attack on how to get this land ready to live on off the grid. #rvlife #offgrid #homesteading

Looking forward to seeing a property tour and your changes. Glad you are moving forward with the project. Good luck on finding a good RV.

Thanks, I'll need the luck on the RV front. My budget doesn't get me very far there so I'll just settle for water tight and the critical systems functioning. I know it won't be very nice.
I'm going to get my buddy to come out and do some drone footage of the "before" soon and then later this summer I can do an "after" clip.

Good for you, Sir! That is exactly the way we did it, except, we aren't using a travel trailer or RV to live in. Instead, we built what we call a Sh'ouse; 16 x 24 feet and outfitted it with a small kitchen and bath. We built it on skids so whe the house is complete we can scoot it to another part of the property to become a shop or guestouse, or whatever. We are an hour away from all of the timber we need in the mountains, but you have made a good choice buying a property with trees.

That was my plan, too, but I needed something quicker. And technically one of the only restrictions I am under that kinda stinks is that I can only have one dwelling on the property and it has to be 1800 sq ft. Otherwise I was going to do a 16x40 "cabin" first, which would basically be a one bedroom apartment, and then turn that into a guest house and build a bigger house. I may still end up doing something similar under the radar of the neighbors but we will see.

Sounds like a good plan. But I know in my experience there's always something. And I'm sure you know that too. My heart and prayers are with you.

Yeah, for sure. There will be surprises. Sometimes good ones, though. I was budgeting a lot more for gravel but the prices from local companies are insanely cheap. But I am sure there will be negative surprises to even it out!

Good luck with your plan. Maybe a couple of things to consider. A fold out shipping container style house instead of the RV. And a cover between the two shipping containers to provide an out of the rain space. (Particularly with an RV, since the roof will almost certainly leak. Did you budget for a couple of IBC totes for fresh water storage?

Good ideas. I have already planned to create a space in between the two shipping containers that will have a roof and be a sort of work area or carport for my truck. I already have one IBC tote and will certainly grab more. These are all projects that I will work on after the initial goal is achieved of moving onto the land.
I'd love to build some sort of house out of a shipping container but that may get into the grey area of the restrictions for my land. They may consider that a permanent dwelling and it would not meet the 1800 sq ft requirement.

I always plan for least a 10% cost and time bust when estimating.

Yep, for sure. I always do my forecasting very conservative to absorb the unforeseen surprises.
