  • This week we go deep into a subject which goes beyond just what to do in your training but the WHY behind your training.
It's something that has changed for us over the years and something we are fascinated to see how it keeps evolving in our own minds. One area we talk about more today is how your training impacts your physique and the mental barriers we have around the perception of how we look and how that makes us feel.
We'd love to hear what you think and to share your own perspective - get in touch with us over on Instagram / schoolofcalisthenics
We'd also love you to join us in July for a Spartan Race for FREE! Sponsor OFFER // Get your FREE place at a Spartan Race with us! [Only 50 available]

That's a great philosophy Tim. Train the way you enjoy training and be happy with the physique it gives you. Also, I can say this now you're both in your 40s 😆, by the time you get to 40, you've probably got the physique you'll end up with the rest of your life if you simply train for enjoyment. There's no doubt you can make some minor changes in those years after 40, but unless you are super committed, don't have a young family and have everything nailed down, I think the best you can achieve physique wise is perhaps losing some fat and gaining a couple of kilos of muscle. I did that over 5 years when I turned 50. I lost about 10kilos of fat and gained about 2 kilos of muscle. I'm pretty happy with that now and can enjoy training without having to aim for anything too specific.

Sigh. I'm a generalist of sorts, ie doing exercises that I like and then feel good about, but I always think I want something more.
I like going to the gym but not to build a gym-like body but an athletic one. I have more or less achieved that, or at least I am relatively satisfied now, but because along with gymning I have also liked basic bodyweight strength exercises like pushups and pull-ups.
That interest in basic bodyweight exercises got me interested in calisthenics. But those moves ARE SO BLOODY HARD. Lol. I'm 42 and my joints (or tendons, I don't know) are sore all the time. It takes me two to three days to fully recover from even a 50 minute very light session of pullups, archer pushups, one arm push ups, airwalk pull ups, trying front lever, etc. I know, I don't have a training plan so it's more of what catches my fancy and I try it out.
I thought that age is hindering me but after knowing about this British bloke called Pennington, I think, who started calisthenics in his 60s and successfully doing the front lever, etc, i was inspired. It means a lot to me that hey, if someone who is older than my father is able to do this, I can.
But it seems an impossible dream. My joints hurt all the time. 😢
The positive is that I am bonding with my third son, 14, who loves doing this stuff too. He seems natural. He could muster an elbow lever just after a few sessions and a muscle up too. I am still working on firming my frogstand. Lol.
    Anyway, love your show.
    Love, from Singapore.
