  • The Norco shootout was an armed confrontation between five heavily armed bank robbers and deputies of the Riverside and San Bernardino County sheriff's departments in Norco, California, United States on May 9, 1980. Two of the five perpetrators and one sheriff's deputy were killed, 9 other law enforcement officers were injured, and gunfire damaged at least 30 police cars and one police helicopter.
    At approximately 3:40 p.m. (UTC-7), five men armed with shotguns, an assault rifle, handguns, and an improvised explosive device robbed the Norco branch of Security Pacific Bank. Deputies of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department responding to the bank robbery call confronted the perpetrators outside the bank and a shootout ensued, killing one perpetrator. The perpetrators then stole a vehicle in the bank parking lot and fled the scene, leading police on a 25-mile (40 km) car chase into neighboring San Bernardino County. Riverside County deputies were joined in the pursuit by officers of other area law enforcement agencies, including the California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. The perpetrators then ambushed the pursuing deputies and engaged them in another shootout in unincorporated San Bernardino County near Lytle Creek before escaping into a wooded area in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains.

    My Criminal Investigation teacher at RCC was a retired detective who worked the case. I had never heard of it before this (2007) and he showed us many of the crime scene photos. He passed in 2014, unfortunately. Great guy.

    I always find it a minor annoyance when perpetrators are referred to as 'suspects'. A suspect is someone you have reason to believe committed an act. If you have eyes on and are engaging you're no longer suspected of an act, you're the one(s) doing it.

      Video Footage? This was 1980. There wasn't a really good portable video system available that was cheap enough to have numerous local cameramen on hand. Portable Video was still a new and bulky analog technology that required a portable separate Beta tape recorder that hung from the cameraman's sholder like a purse while he hoisted the heavy camera on his sholder. Expensive! Usually the big network stations in the inner city had those. Suburban locations like Norco, most local journalist were still working with cameraman shooting 16mm film. Even though those guys were very proficient cameramen, they were also not as numerous and therefor not often available to catch News action in the moment. They often came in later for the interviews. That's why breaking news on TV would often say something like, "Norco bank robbery occurred today. 2 dead. Massive firefight insued. Film at 11!" That meant tune in at the 11pm News to see the film location interviews because the shot film had to go through the lab first to get fixed and then telecine transferred to video. Stevo also pointed out news choppers which is a good point. There wasn't that many News choppers back then and they were mostly flying in the inner city.

      @@digitalfilmjat6534 Most news was provided by radio at the time instead of live tv on site for these type of breaking events. On TV you'd get a still shot of the reporter and their location and just hear their voice over a handheld radio.

      It's actually a training film, made by Irvine PD. Rolf Parks, the Deputy whose name is said a lot in it, went to work for Irvine PD after this happened. He was the reason it was made, he helped make it. That's how they have all the crime scene photos and drawings in it.

    This right here is why our law enforcement agencies carry much heavier weapons than they did in the 1980's. It's unfortunate but I believe officers should be allowed to carry whatever they need to get the job done. Had a couple of these cops been armed with AR-15s at the onset this may have gone down very differently.

    I can't even imagine being in a shitstorm like this with nothing but a .38.... I remember directly after this happened, I was sitting at a light in Norco and a Sheriff's unit pulled up next to my truck and I noticed the 870 had a sling on it with 25 rounds on it, half of them green, (slugs) and the rest red, (buckshot) . Just like the North Hollywood deal, slugs would have been a big help if they had had them.

    • @PTRRanger951

      SBSO ended up mounting machine guns on their helicopters after this. 50 cals on the Hueys and had door gunners. Didn't last long, but they did it for a short time. Bad part about slugs though, is they don't go through body armor. On patrol though, I would have my tube loaded with slugs, and the side saddle with buck. If i was going to use it, I wanted to have a 1oz punch. It would still be felt with body armor.

      He was already on the ground...lying on his stomach. When the deputies ordered him to freeze, he instantly rolled to his left side. The deputies saw the pistol in his right hand and fired their weapons. Delgado discharged the handgun into his own chest at the same moment, right into his heart. It can’t be said for certain whether he did so accidentally, or intentionally. But the Coroner said that the self-inflicted shot was the one that killed him.

      What would it matter? What would benefit from them trying to cover it up? They did shoot at him, they hit him, they were trying to kill him, so you would think it would look better to say they shot atnd killed him, and make the cops out to be the heroes at that particular point in time wouldn't it? Kinda dumb to question it, without realizing what you're questioning.
      40 years ago wasn't like today, everyone wanted these guys dead, including the public, so saying the cops killed him would actually look better, not worse.
      He no doubt pulled the trigger involuntarily to getting shot. It's not like it's disputed they shot at him, so not like they have to hide the fact they were shooting to kill him.

    Accuracy at a half mile away? I doubt that. Seems a bit exaggerated. Shooting at a half mile is 800 yards, and the best snipers with high end optics are able to do that, but not some slap dicks with AR-15’s.

    • @PTRRanger951
      @PTRRanger951 Рік тому +1

      It was aiming for accuracy. It was shooting at police cars on a multi-lane highway driving straight. It would be like shooting at the side of a barn. Easy to do. You will hit something. They were not specifically aiming for a driver. At it made it easier with the light bars. All they had to do was look towards the steady burning red light in the bars that was not flashing. In CA all emergency vehicles had to have a steady red burning, non-flashing light to the front. Up until LEDs started being used, halogen lights could be seen 3 miles away before any flashing lights. Makes it real easy to know what you are aiming towards at a distance.
      It's proof enough they were taking damage at that distance. They didn't need to be precision riflemen, just need to shoot in a certain direction, they were not trying to hit a playing card at half mile away. Same way they were lucky enough to get some hits on a moving helicopter.
