I came from KAN’s railroad online videos a few months back and have been subscribed since! Really enjoy your in-depth videos on how stuff work but like all of your railroad content! I’m a tractor guy by nature and have always been intrigued by traction engine at some shows hear in Iowa,but this has really peaked my interest in railroads especially on the steam side of things. Definitely has me looking into a Colorado trip to visit the museum and hopefully some of the railroads Can’t wait for more Hyce!

What amazes me about the US narrow guage is that the actual locomotives and their cabs are bigger than our UK standard guage locos half the time. Absolutely nuts.
@@Hyce777 Ive always wondered, why is it that British engines have very sleek lines with very few exterior gubbins, but american locos look like they were covered in glue and told to role round in the spare parts bin. There's so much stuff on the outside of US locos, like pipes and a billion domes and compressors and other stuff. Is there a reason the US companies didn't go the route that Britain did with it's exterior design, do you know?
@@josephelliott2613 we had more freight to move longer distances with fewer people so we needed to be able to service our stuff quickly. Much less "sleek/pretty" but a lot easier to deal with.

I'm really looking forward to the videos, and really wishing a lived nearer a railroad I could volunteer at. Although I'm an engineer, I'm the wrong kind... unless until we make an electric fired steam locomotive! Also cool to see you have a D&RG SD40T-2 at the museum, the tunnel motors are my favorite units of all time.

I had an interesting heat kink one day just yards from the mainline switch... but is was not the 6 feet you are talking about but a 12 inch deviation. The line was shut down for 3 days to realign the CWR curve off the mainline switch at Hudson Jct.
I can't mash the like button enough! Especially for the footage of the inside valve gear in motion! Music and scenes were well put together and no matter how tired I feel, listening to that tune makes me want to grab a scoop and make the coal fly!

This weekend East Broad Top railroad in Pennsylvania will be going back to the war era and there will be one locomotive setting outside and this will be my first time seeing it all
Stephenson valve gear. The closer parts to camera are the expansion links, further away are the eccentrics. All of this linkage is responsible for telling the piston when to "fire". :)

@@ashleytaylor896 there are some locos that have external Stephenson valve gear but it's quite weird and uncommon. In this video, the external rods / cranks etc. were on walschaerts valve gear, yes.

Yup, 491 is massive. It's standard gauge in all dimensions except height.

Very. It was 70-75 Fahrenheit and in the cab it was a good 130 Fahrenheit. Easy to overheat.
