      @@theetravisbthis is why I keep coming back too. Learned so much in the past few months I’d never seen explained on any other channels or even tv shows. Found you searching 1960 paint/patina preservation as I purchased a 60 Comet in October and think I’ve seen just about every video of yours since. Keep up the great work and I’ll share more of my car in spring as I take it to cruise ins and fix little things along the way. 🤠

    Good job on the brakes on the '48! My Dad showed me how to hone brake cylinders without a hone... back in the day, you would get a good straight stick (like a dowel) and split one end, then put a piece of folded emery cloth in the split so that each side was even with the other. A rubber band was used to hold the split together, and some penetrating oil or brake fluid was used as a lubricant. Put the dowel into a drill motor (which looked just like the one in the picture on the Lisle hone) and use it to hone out the cylinder in question! It seemed as though we never had the specialty tools that made these jobs easier, but with a little ingenuity, we got by...

    • @MaxGiganteum
      @MaxGiganteum 4 місяці тому

      What you're describing is known in the world of machining as a "Fly" or a "Sandfly". While they will remove built up crap inside a bore, they also won't really remove any appreciable material either so if you've got serious pitting or defects, you'll need to actually bore oversize & sleeve or use a real hone and move up to the next size. As for making a Fly, make them out of metal instead of wood. They'll last and last whereas the wood breaks down, especially if you get fluids on it. The bonus with metal is that they clean up in a snap and you can carefully tap on both sides of the split thus increasing the gripping power on the Emory cloth. You cannot do that with wood. The trick for most non-machinist folks is cutting the slit into the end of whatever metal shaft it is that you select for constructing the Fly. My best advice there is to grab some brass or aluminum rod instead of steel and use a very thin blade meant to cut metal in a hacksaw. Use a bench vise to hold the shaft while you carefully and methodically cut your slit. Bandsaws also can be your friend as can a drill press and a custom-made slitting disc. I've gone overboard and made a number of them using higher quality steel shafts from cast off screwdrivers, punches and awls... and an EDM machine. I probably own the highest quality, most precise Fly set on the planet... and have been laughed at for it too! Strangely, most co-workers wanted some of their own, even while laughing about it. Anyway, there are a handful of ways to get the job done, of course, but the best may be to ask a machinist friend to make one for you! 🤔👍🏻 Best wishes!
      - Max Giganteum

    Thank you to your father for helping you. I love working on older vehicles. It seems your father is passing on the knowledge to you. I wish I had such a great mentor around to pass on their experience. You are very lucky. Great content and I can’t wait for the next video on this truck.
