Here's what it cost to run my fleet of 16 cars & 14 bikes in 2018!

- 2018 was a busy year in the garage, here's a round-up of some of the costs involved in running a 16 car and 14 bike garage, plus which cars got sold in 2018 and why.
Thanks also to platinumalloys.com for doing the fantastic refurb on the Countach wheels, which even included finding the correct period stickers for the side of the rim and colour coding the wheel-weights.

I could listen to this man all day. No fake hype, stupid high pitch laughs, just pure passion. Legend.
Absolutely. That is what I think as well.
Totally agree. Sometimes, when I'm in a bad mood, I just watch one of his videos and he cheers me up. :)
@urbex2007 I'm sure you are also annoyed that he always opens his mouth whenever he says a word, right? can't he speak with his mouth closed?
Exactly. I am sooo sick and tired of presenters hyping everything.
@urbex2007 Haha what a strange comment.
You should have only one real plan in 2019. Keep this channel as bloody brilliant as it’s always been! Proper petrolhead, proper channel
Marcus Hogan real petrol head not like that obnoxious Shmee.
TrueFilter don’t mind Shmee too much, nowhere near as bad as some other supercar eejits. They think that because they have money and can list off some facts and figures about super cars that they’re proper petrolheads. They probably could even list off the stages of a four-stroke engine!
I hate toxic fuel but agree brilliant bike/car channel all the best buzz #buzzofftoxic
Well said Marcus
Hope he have good fire insurance.Auto UA-camr have fire as a trend of 2018.
Really interesting to know some "behind the scenes" of living with and looking after these gems. And as far as the bike videos go, I LOVE THEM. The Dakar one was great, and it was so nice to see you that happy with the 900ie's performance in the dunes.
Harry, you have no idea how much value these videos you do have. I'm a big fan. Thanks so much for doing them. You're an enthusiast I would enjoy chatting with at a car show for sure. Terrific channel.
Whenever I get a notification form Harry’s Garage. I drop everything and watch a quality video of a proper enthusiast
/// M I agree 👍
Same.
same
My absolute favourite
Agree. Well said.
The Dakar trip was brilliant to watch. I'm not as into my bikes as I am cars, but you made the Dakar video what it was, a terrific set of videos - don't be put off by the analytics, keep up the good work.
Harry, I love your channel, you really are an oldschool petrolhead. I love your enthusiasm in vintage cars, it´s so nice to watch your videos. Keep it up!
One of the most underrated car channels, in my opinion, you could tell he has a passion for cars also he seems more classy than other car channels that just talk about basically how rich they are.
Clio is lurking there without a word. :D
EE DESIGN little bad boy !
It is the car that got me watching Harry. Disappointed it wasn't mentioned.
Thats mums car
i believe it is his son's car. There's a video on it in the archive I seem to recall. Original press car that EVO used.
@@davidreynolds81 That's the video I was talking about. Harry bought it himself. (at the time).
Harry, happy new year! Please keep making the motorbike trip videos. I’m not even in to motorbikes and wouldn’t know how to start one but love the whole adventure.
And they say there’s no money In Farming, Harry must be growing gold.
Or meth...
@@MrSteveo114 Cannabis oil is trending.
he didnt make his money in farming chum, his wife's family is loaded
lol he founded evo magazine
Harry’s farming weed
Harry Escobar 😂
Literally feel like saying thank you Harry and see you next time, the videos are so good and so well spoken nearly got me speaking back to you on the screen!
Good to see the Clio is still in!
£50k in a year, just in maintenence! Man, that's commitment. Can't help thinking though, that garage mechanics charge far too much these days. I'm certain there's a bit of the 'he's got a nice classic and I haven't surcharge' going on, if you know what I mean. The Classic Car Scene used to be mostly enthusiasts running old & interesting cars as a hobby. Purchase prices & maintenance costs were so much more reasonable not that long ago. Nowadays, the scene has been invaded (and almost completely taken over) by the investors who view old cars merely as an asset. It's all about the profit potential for these chaps, and for me it's ruining the hobby. The garages seem to have jumped on the profit bandwagen now too. They look at the investors making huge returns on flipping collector cars and want a slice of the action too. So maintenance costs have soured. The result, sadly, is that the genuine enthusiasts can no longer afford to buy or run 50s, 60s and 70s cars anymore, and it's a real shame. They are simply priced out of the market now. Even something like a Mk3 Cortina, that just a few years ago would change hands for £3k to £4k, are over £18k now. They ain't cars anymore, they are assets in an investment portfolio. For a petrolhead & classic car enthusiast, that is the saddest thing of all.
Steve Vegan which cars are that? I am waiting for classic 80’s cars like testarosa or countach to crash:))
I've been a mechanic for 46 years, not always on classic cars and never on exotics but one thing held true all the way the money was crap. As a self employed person, I have never been able to charge a decent rate for labour and the classic car rate is always low because some jobs take hundreds of hours and the cost can grow alarmingly. My formal training is in agricultural stuff and now recently (too late for me sadly) there is a shortage of mechanics, the price of years of rubbish wages, and now the pay rate is finally having to grow. My point is generally mechanics do not charge too much, especially when compared to other professions.
@@stevefuller1779 very true. A technician here putting 65hrs a week and can't seem to get ahead in life. This profession is only for those who love the trade. Very few nowadays can handle the carburation with no computers. I can truly Express I put much of my hard earned money back in my craft.
I wondered when I was young how teachers could afford to live while paying for most of their necessities, this is a whole new level.
@@lop8828 , Doesn't get easier as you get older, Still lifting, heavy stuff, crawling and rolling about on a concrete floor have all taken their toll, but I'd rather do this than sit on my arse in an office, it's just sad that good mechanics do not get appreciated any more than grease monkeys. Agree wth you comments on carbs, plugs and point etc. I find it almost laughable that these, so called skilled technicians are able to blindly follow all the mis-information on a diagnostic computer but can't do the simple stuff.
Where does the money go? Is it parts or labour?
Thanks Harry! Best of wishes for the coming year and look forward to seeing more of your wonderful collection. Must thank you for the 928 video you did as I have had one since 1997 and love it..
Harry. It's been a pleasure watching your videos. You mentioned bike videos having low views but I think it gets better once you explain some more of the history behind the vehicles. Most of us are here because of the knowledge you share and I think that's sort of the cherry on top of your channel. Happy 2019 from Brazil
Cheers Harry!! The same to all other true Petrolheads who frequent his channel!!
Car Bike head! #buzzofftoxic
Another great video thanks Harry, nice to see the collection together. Just wanted to say even though you doing get the views on the bike vidoes I personally love them! Keep up the great work!
tell the bbc to get you hosting top gear i would watch it then
Top Gear is all scripted jokes these days. More entertainment than petrolhead stuff. (IMO)
@Steve Barclay I watched a few of the "new ones" with the old crew but didn't like it. Haven't seen any of the BBC efforts with the new team.
Top Gear is no longer about cars and driving (hasn't been for many years now). Harry would be wasted on it. We need a new, proper car show for him. We could call it Harry's something...any suggestions?
Happy new year Harry. Great video as always, good to understand the running costs behind such an enthusiasts collection
Really enjoyed that Harry thank you for posting - I had often wondered how you go about managing your fleet and the sorts of costs involved and this gave a great insight so thanks for that - I of course would love to see more bike videos.....but completely understand if they don't mix with your audience!
TheMissendenFlyer Mr. Flyer, I’m happy to see you watch Mr. Metcalfe.
Hey kids!
Hello there!
Shawn Conrad Aren’t they both the best? “Cherio”!
Couldn't agree more. There are so many guys doing these videos about how these cars drive and generally just enjoying them. That's becoming a bit boring, what I want to know is what it is really like to own a car like Testarossa. What kind of yearly expenses, what breaks down etc.
That Roller is perfect. It runs reliably enough but it is not _so_ dear that one is afraid to use it. And it fits in everywhere at any event. It will always be cool enough for anything.
I never expected it to get so much use once we got back from the arctic but there you go. It's super-easy going way of eating miles is highly addictive and it's proved to be highly reliable too. Plus for £4000, what's not to like!
Cool I love those old 70s RRs like a vast heavy old Ford cortina with a v8! #buzzofftoxic
@@harrysgarage Absolute bargain at that money, I bet everyone loves it.
@King Brilliant why have you got Jimmy on your mind.???
Looking forward to more superb videos this year Harry. Happy New Year!
I love what you do Harry, I knew you were a man of exceptional taste based on on 3 of your cars, the XJ12C ( sad, most people don't even know it exists ), your Espada ( one of the coolest most under appreciated supercars of all time, especially here in the USA } and the fact that you had the wisdom to remove the hideous wing from the Countach which completely transforms the car. Thanks for all your efforts.
Actually the best car related channel on youtube, unlike these millennial youtubers who try to look like a true petrolhead! keep up the good work sir!
When i grow up, i want to be like Harry (and yes.....I’m 42 years old).
I'm 53 still waiting
17 here... probably equally unlikely
Happy new year Harry and thanks for the update. Once had to have the flaky alloys on an old Skoda Felicia estate blasted and powder coated. Needless to say they came back gold!
Keep on bringing on the drives in 2019 Harry, all types are appreciated!
Ironic that this channel is better the the grand tour and top gear!
It most certainly is!
Absolutely. Grand Tour is more an entertainment programme, and TopGear is desperately trying to hang on to what it used to be with assorted presenters all trying to be the next Jeremy Clarkson. Harry's Garage is all about the cars, which is what petrolheads want most of all. It's my favourite little corner of UA-cam.
I've never ever met the guy, and I've never even heard about him until I found one of these little vids, but you get the impression he's a super friendly and really inspiring enthusiast, and he comes off as so friendly and warm you feel you could be very good friends, withouth even having met in real life. Being that inspired and being inspiring goes a very long way, and it is in fact more interesting to watch than pretty much anything out there. He's the only one I know that can make an inspection of a harvest combiner the most interesting thing you have ever seen, and only a true gentleman would change tires on a Jaguar wearing gloves and a Chronograph. I've watched every episode, and it's just a very good time...
Matthew Godwin except Harris isn’t trying to be Clarkson. He’s a better driver by miles. I’d rather watch him drive than Clarkson’s ham fisted steering wheel twirling and gurning. If you guys were real TG fans you’d know that TG didn’t start with the three old men so they aren’t TG.
@@ingvarhallstrom2306 "He's the only one I know that can make an inspection of a harvest combiner the most interesting thing you have ever seen"
"Being that inspired and being inspiring."
Both statements totally true and there is something to be taken ffrom that.
Harry I wish I lived near you and we were friends, I love riding my motorcycles and it is impossible to find anyone to ride with let alone anyone in my age group (I'm 59). Your videos are awesome, I'm a subscriber and I have been following you before you could actually do that :)
Thanks a lot Harry, for all your great videos! You provide a huge entertainment value and so much knowledge on all the different cars! Just wanted to let you know that some dude from Latvia, driving a 2001 smartcar really appreciates your efforts of sharing your collection and experiences! That Rolls Royce roadtrip was ... well the highlight of my year! I even think of doing the same with my smart.
Have all the best in 2019!
I love how honest and open you are about your collection. Always an interesting view!
I wish you a wonderfull year, Harry! Please keep up with the bike videos, also! Cheers
Harry, since you’re in business with Jaguar, at some point you have to add to your collection an XJ220...
@Steve Prince couldn't agree more with you ..Nürburgring below 8 minutes...and that's back in 1992. A proper beast !
The XJ220 is so underestimated.
It’s exactly as you stated . A true road beast, which even today, with all these Lambos, Ferrari’s etc, is a shape that definetelly draws the looks...
Or an xj13
Harry, you'll always get a view when your next video arrives in my email. I had five motorcycles before my first car (50 years ago!) and a few more along the way, the last being a BMW R1100RS. Your videos are always informative, sometimes educating, always entertaining & well worth my time. Thanks Harry!
i like how harry tells you what the maintenance of these cars cost - no nonsense, isn't telling you to show off or to get a reaction, just a great source of information and a man with a passion. love the content harry, keep it up!
Thank you for sharing the bike videos. It’s made me commit to starting my own collection.
Words that confirm you’ve done alright: This is my Countach and that’s my Testarossa”, further confirmed by not having to add on the terribly crass term: “poster”.
I'm looking forward to all of your content in 2019. Keep up the excellent work! Thank you!
Thanks Harry and happy new year, keep up the awesome work including the bike trips. This is simply the best petrol/gear head channel around, Thanks again 😀
Please take the camera with you when you do a bike trip ... I really enjoy them as much as the cars .. in fact keep making all the types of vids .. your enthusiasm for anything mechanical is part of the enjoyment i get from your vids ..
Thanks for the update Harry! I wondered what happened to the Alfa Romeo 2000GTV, have you ever driven one breathed on by Alfaholics?
Keep up the good work, the trips you do with your classics always make my day.
Great to see all the cars again Harry, it’s like being introduced to the family. Really interesting hearing about the costs of owning the collection. Enjoyed all your videos, especially the European trips and car show/auction reviews. Thanks... I know it will be a great 2019 to come.
Harry- as always, a class act. Thanks for sharing all the info. Love the attention to details. Cheers!
I have always loved your collection Harry. Very diverse--love your taste.
Looks like the SL600 will be the next one to go
Sad but true. The only German car left
I’d have it, just the small matter of the money😉
P7 i say
I'll gladly offer £5,350, more than Harry originally paid (just watched the original video of it on the channel, albeit with different number plates)
@@jobsjobbed5125 that's the usual problem.
Love the fact you just have cars that mean something to you rather than the best just because. Brilliant channel looking forward to 2019 Harry
I love listening to this man talk about machines. Cheers, Harry and happy new year!
Please keep doing the bike videos, the Dakar one was superb.
Love the videos Harry, keep them coming.
I'm new here. I never heard a person talk about his cars with such detail and love. I am more a one vehicle person (motorbike), but after watching this, I can now begin to understand why one would have some many cars. I can feel how your heart goes to each car that you talk about. Thanks for sharing, great video!
love this guy hes so nice
everyone needs a harry in there life
i could sit round a table and listen to this guy for a year straight
love the channel
Harry, love the decision to remove the wing on the Countach. I especially love the gold wheels on a black Countach. Thumbs up!
Yes.. Black and gold!👍
Congratulations and thank you for the fantastic content in 2018. Wonderful collection of cars. Much approve of the gold wheels and spoiler-free Countach. First Countach I ever saw was a Bronze LP400S with gold wheels in the early 80's in Monaco. That car was also spoiler-free, an unforgettable moment for me, promptly bought the Tamiya RC kit when we got back to the UK. Looking forward to what's in store for 2019 but first, off to watch the Dakar videos!
I always enjoy Harry's videos as they are so knowledgeable and assume a reasonable standard of knowledge and understanding from the audience. And a civilized comments section - Hooray!
Please keep up the good work. Bikes, new cars, the fleet, travelogues and farm machinery - it's all good as far as I'm concerned.
Glad to see the Esprit getting some love too...
Nice one, 13 bikes (buy another, quick!). Followed you through 18, good luck for 19. Give a shout next time you pass by the Southern Alps of France
Would like to see another adventure trip with the Silver Shadow!
Have a great 2019 Harry, loving the videos as always.Cheers.
Don't stress about the views, make the vids you want to make. It's the enthusiasm and knowledge that is key. Have a fun 2019 can't wait to see what you get up too. Cheers!
I’m going to strip my gearbox down first thing tomorrow, see if I’ve got 20p in there too.
Happy new year, Harry. I love the channel and I love being a vicarious millionaire!
1) Countach - yes, no wing.
2) 16 cars and 14 bikes! I've never owned more than two vehicles at once. I did once have two bikes at the same time (R65 and K100RS BMWs), but as my mate said "You've only got one arse"...
3) So looking forward to what you have to come in the new year.
4) Sod the UA-cam viewing figures - more bike content!
All the best
Andy
Andy Vepers the correct number of bikes is always three. Any biker will tell you that. One you ride, one you ride on sunny days and one you’re fixing..... 😁👍🏽
@@gtp_vexd3507 In the 30 years I rode bikes, I mainly managed to combine all three purposes into the one bike!
I love all your content, Harry, but I look forward to the bike adventures the most. Keep up the great work and have a happy and successful 2019.
I love your videos. They are the most sincere on the internet. Good health and long driving life to you Harry!
Keep it up Harry! Still enjoy the bike content despite the views. Just do what you want!
The Testarossa is my absolute favourite car in this collection.
Same, also the SL600
@Steve Prince but it is the best designed SL of them all and probably one of the most beautiful 90s cars. And the prestige of the SL600 is also extremely high
@Steve Prince but it was THE Mercedes in the nineties, every celebrity had one
Absolutely......! Testarossa (though old) I think is the most classic & best looking sports car of all time.
I love how you put power steering into the Espada, just to make it more drivable and enjoyable. True car lover.
+1 for bike videos, please. Love your take on things and your angle on bikes is just what the world needs. Powerful but lightweight off roaders are the future!
Harry deserves more views
Bike videos are very welcome!
Another straightforward video from a true enthusiast is very welcome and enjoyed.
Also, the bike adventures are just as enjoyable. Keep it up!!
I really enjoyed last year’s summary, Thanks for the update and the videos you produce! Greetings from Mexico!
Dakar video with big singles works for me!
Keep doing the bike videos Harry...loved the Dakar one
Yes. Loved every minute of those.
What I enjoy the most about your channel is the sheer enthusiasm that you have for each of the vehicles that you encounter. You do such a wonderful job of sharing that enthusiasm with the rest of us. I love all of the plentiful details that you provide about each and every vehicle. It all makes for quite a bit of vicarious pleasure for someone like me who owns just one motorcycle and one car for the purpose of riding/driving pleasure. I must admit that after watching this video in particular I can't help but appreciate my Honda S2000 that much more. For me, the enjoyment to cost ratio remains incredibly high, especially when I figure in how little this car costs to own. Looking forward to all of your upcoming videos throughout this year!
Thanks for kind words. Bang for buck is the key ingredient for ownership enjoyment. Your S2000 is a good example, mine is the super-rare Cagiva I took to the desert. It cost me £7000, which is expensive for a bike but the experience I got hooning it around the Sahara dunes is priceless ;-)
@@harrysgarage That's not too surprising as that Cagiva really acquitted itself quite well out in the dunes. Very neat bike.
Great insight. Thank you Harry. Here's wishing you a wonderful 2019.

Hi Harry, very interesting and low key. Despite your obvious good fortune you seem to be one easy to share a beer with. I have seen several of your segments and I do enjoy them . Thank you and here's to a happy and healthy 2019.
The Clio Trophy doesn't get a mention?
Keep up the bike trips!
Happy New Year, Harry. Have enjoyed following your videos on car reviews and your legendary trips. Testarossa to the Sahara and Rolls to the Arctic were epic, trip to Pagani as well. Hope to see more of your reviews of car past and present, and looking forward to your videos, which are some of the best automotive UA-cam videos out there. Cheers.
Even though I have absolutely no interest in cars (I drive a 1995 Honda Civic) I like Harry. It's always good to see someone talk with such knowledge and enthusiasm. The videos are very professionally made and Harry is a real gent.

Great update Harry. Doing the same with my own collection. Nice that 4 of mine have dropped out of MoTs this year. Will still get mine done from time to time, but just when I choose.
Historic status is a good thing ;-)
Thank-you for preserving such a beautiful bunch of cars and sharing them with us.
Completely agree with taking off the spoiler on the Countach, looks much better, as does the gold wheels.
