I deployed to Bulgaria in 03. While walking down the street in Burgas, with a couple of my USAF friends, we started hearing the N word being tossed around behind us. We turn around to see who's crazy enough not to speak any English outside of that word, and it's a group of maybe 5 WS, looking like extras in Higher Learning. Burgas has lots of street vendors, and the one we were next to happen to be selling weapons. We calmly walked to the table to buy weapons to defend ourselves and the WS ran off once they saw that we were just as serious about our self-defense as they were about trying to harass us.
I went to school with her. I didn’t know her personally, but she seemed like a nice person and was always involved in the community. Nobody should every go through something like this. I hope she’s doing better now

Years ago I worked with a woman from Bulgaria. I jokingly asked her if they liked black people in Bulgaria. She answered me yes. I knew that it was a lie, I immediately told her that I was booking a ticket to go and visit. She never mentioned this to me. But she went to our white co-worker and she was in tears because she thought that I was headed to her country. She admitted that she was in fear for my safety because of the anti-black racism in her country towards black people

A simular incident happened to my nephew while he went to teach English in a town outside St Petersberg, Russia. He was attached by skinheads at least twice and had several close calls beyond the physical confrontations. He too had to seek help through the US Embassy which basically saved his life and got him out of Russia. I am so glad the young sista is safe but we all as Black people have to be aware!

Western Europe is completely safe, around 10-20% of our population is black/arab. You are safer here than in the US because black people aren't being gunned down by the police. Eastern Europe though is another matter entirely, a lot less multiculturalism there and a lot more discrimination and Nazism.

Recently visited Eastern Europe for work and STUCK with the company employees that was hosting me. One of the employees who hosted was an African sister, her colleagues were men from the area and they escorted me on our outings. The tone overall where we were working was friendly, but I was taking no chances being out by myself, especially as I don’t have competency in speaking the language.
Eastern Europe is pretty rough right now because of mass immigration, a bad economy and a lot of little trumps. But you have to be careful in the rest of Europe as well.

But I removed Turkey from my selections, then got assigned to Korea. I later researched the Peace Corps with intent to serve only if I got assigned to Africa, Central America, or possibly Asea. Bulgaria is frequently reviewed as a beautiful, low cost vacation destination and I've seen pleasant vlogs of African influencers. I'd wanted to join a group trip to a neighboring country, so I thought it would be cool to branch to Bulgaria for few days. After this, I refuse to risk my safety, or happiness, nor spend a coin in either country. There are better places that appreciate and need the patronage.

Although embarrassingly a US visitor was attacked in dublin last week by some street thugs for no reason, the crime is a bit out of control in parts of Dublin City and no one tells them coming into the airport where is safe and where is not, unfortunately. Police is short and 48 new recruits are being put in the streets in two weeks, these thugs will give them hell. A 14 year old has been arrested for the attack. This incident sounds like the mafia type gangs in Bulgaria, Romania. Might be more the reason no one helped because their own people are equally afraid of them. Even in Dublin they are taking over the Main Street here and it’s so obvious but no one does anything. I’m glad she made it ok.

Lets not forget when we go to these countries they will have a problem with you because you are a (Black) professional. Americans who have degrees. I know this because I lived in the Netherlands for three years as a military member and during this time many of the A. American soldiers regularly reported home and car break-ins and other damage the locals had done to their property. My husband and I have yet to travel to his home country Egypt. His brother is telling us that in some part Americans aren't welcome man nor women. I would never take a job or travel alone without my husband. My husband has been all over the world and he himself says he has had issues in other countries.

I recently watch a video of a Kenyan girl who was attacked in Bulgaria...no case was ever opened. She got paralysed/ sadly in a vegetative state. No one wanted to know there. I will never visit European nor Arabic countries...I would not feel comfortable 😕. Glad she is alive but am sure this incident left her traumatised. I can only imagine being chased like an animal...only because of the colour of your skin. What a shame 😔

Heard. I recently visited Eastern Europe for work and stuck by my host the WHOLE time. There were Black people, Africans, etc in the area as it was a major city but I didn't speak the language and wasn't taking NO CHANCES. The experience was good for me but I don't take my safety for granted out here with these WS.
@@smustipher if you know the language a little bit and show that you've studied their culture even if a little- it bridges many of the gaps. There are many language exchange apps where you can befriend natives and learn some of the language before you go on a trip. Doing this will enhance you're experience so much as the native people won't think of you as some rude, pampered, privileged American.

In Italy back in the 90s during undergrad we were traveling on a train. My friend spoke Spanish so she tried to communicate with the guy coming around selling snacks. He was friendly, too friendly. I layed back down while she chatted with him. The next thing I know she screams and I am like what the hell happened. The guy grabbed her breast. We tried to report it and they asked if we wanted to get off in France to file a report. She didn't want to get off because we were heading to Barcelona. We also considered that women didn't have any rights like that in thse countries. That bastard got away with it.

That being said, having visited many of these countries as a person of color, where the black population is few, as horrible as her situation was, I believe it to be an isolated incident. If you look back at the history of these countries under socialism, racism was extremely rare.

I know Bulgaria has been turning to xenophobic politics recently but I would not have expected that based on my own experience. I deployed to Bulgaria in 03. While walking down the street in Burgas, with a couple of my USAF friends, we started hearing the N word being tossed around behind us. We turn around to see who's crazy enough not to speak any English outside of that word, and it's a group of maybe 5 WS, looking like extras in Higher Learning. Burgas has lots of street vendors, and the one we were next to happen to be selling weapons. We calmly walked to the table to buy weapons to defend ourselves and the WS ran off once they saw that we were just as serious about our self-defense as they were about trying to harass us.

But she went to our white co-worker and she was in tears because she thought that I was headed to her country. She admitted that she was in fear for my safety because of the anti-black racism in her country towards black people

A simular incident happened to my nephew while he went to teach English in a town outside St Petersberg, Russia. He was attached by skinheads at least twice and had several close calls beyond the physical confrontations. He too had to seek help through the US Embassy which basically saved his life and got him out of Russia. I am so glad the young sista is safe but we all as Black people have to be aware!

Recently visited Eastern Europe for work and STUCK with the company employees that was hosting me. One of the employees who hosted was an African sister, her colleagues were men from the area and they escorted me on our outings. The tone overall where we were working was friendly, but I was taking no chances being out by myself, especially as I don’t have competency in speaking the language.
Eastern Europe is pretty rough right now because of mass immigration, a bad economy and a lot of little trumps. But you have to be careful in the rest of Europe as well.

But I removed Turkey from my selections, then got assigned to Korea. I later researched the Peace Corps with intent to serve only if I got assigned to Africa, Central America, or possibly Asea. Bulgaria is frequently reviewed as a beautiful, low cost vacation destination and I've seen pleasant vlogs of African influencers. Although embarrassingly a US visitor was attacked in dublin last week by some street thugs for no reason, the crime is a bit out of control in parts of Dublin City and no one tells them coming into the airport where is safe and where is not, unfortunately. Police is short and 48 new recruits are being put in the streets in two weeks, these thugs will give them hell. A 14 year old has been arrested for the attack. This incident sounds like the mafia type gangs in Bulgaria, Romania. Might be more the reason no one helped because their own people are equally afraid of them. Even in Dublin they are taking over the Main Street here and it’s so obvious but no one does anything. I’m glad she made it ok.
As someone who has traveled multiple parts of Turkey. I must say that the fast majority is very kind and open towards black people. They are very curious but don't mean any harm.

I'm back here from reading about it: the driver admitted to having dated her. He was the last known contact. It looks like it was a crime of passion. However Albania is known for organized crime. Maybe she was a witness or ran into an argument with a corrupt prominent figure? corruption would explain the silence of the neighbours and the police.

Heard. I recently visited Eastern Europe for work and stuck by my host the WHOLE time. There were Black people, Africans, etc in the area as it was a major city but I didn't speak the language and wasn't taking NO CHANCES. The experience was good for me but I don't take my safety for granted out here with these WS.
@@smustipher if you know the language a little bit and show that you've studied their culture even if a little- it bridges many of the gaps. There are many language exchange apps where you can befriend natives and learn some of the language before you go on a trip. Doing this will enhance you're experience so much as the native people won't think of you as some rude, pampered, privileged American.

In Italy back in the 90s during undergrad we were traveling on a train. My friend spoke Spanish so she tried to communicate with the guy coming around selling snacks. He was friendly, too friendly. I layed back down while she chatted with him. The next thing I know she screams and I am like what the hell happened. The guy grabbed her breast. We tried to report it and they asked if we wanted to get off in France to file a report. She didn't want to get off because we were heading to Barcelona. Yes, it seems that what gave them the EXCUSE to treat her so horribly is the fact that she had a dog when maybe she shouldn't have? She didn't say that very clearly if dogs are actually allowed on or not. Did she know and understand that in that moment? Decide to circumvent the rules and sit where she wasn't supposed to. It's called capitalism, of which racism is a symptom. That being said, having visited many of these countries as a person of color, where the black population is few, as horrible as her situation was, I believe it to be an isolated incident. If you look back at the history of these countries under socialism, racism was extremely rare.

I visited BG a decade ago and had a great time. This story is shocking and disgusting and I’m so sorry this young lady experienced that. I know Bulgaria has been turning to xenophobic politics recently but I would not have expected that based on my own experience. I stayed with a friend in Plovdiv and travelled to Burgas, walked around by myself with no problems. It seems that the country has gotten worse.
