I tend to agree with you about species related close season, I fly fish for trout and Bass and understand the close season ie spawning, I lure fish on my local canal that has a close season because the river kennet runs into it, but i can still lure fish for pike and perch on my local stillwaters all year round, don't pike and perch spawn on stillwaters. Good video excellent topic. Tight lines.
We were always led to believe that the closed season was for the benefit of the fish and the environment. But a few years ago it was put to a public vote as to weather or not we should keep the closed season. The way I see it is that if it’s supposed to be so important for wildlife etc then why put it to a public vote? 🤔
I am just about old enough to remember when it was closed season on everything, even though i would love to fish the rivers, i am just grateful we still have somewhere to fish with lakes and canals being available
I remember those days to, I’m from Norfolk and would have ventured up to Lincolnshire in our close season as for some reason some stillwaters remained open in Lincolnshire pretty much the same as it is now. I am now living in Northern Ireland where there is no close season on coarse fishing, rivers or Stillwater but that’s not the reason I ended up here lol.
We should never have got rid of the closed season on all waters . It's not right for fish they need time to breed and basically relax . Farm bred fish isn't good for natural born fish..
I have just watched the video and what a shame that you have missed the point of the Close Season. By mid March most fisheries look worn out and the original idea of the close season was to allow the fish to spawn without being disturbed. It was identified the different species spawned at different times and a three month break was imposed. It may be harsh but it does allow this to happen and if the fish spawn early such as pike they can feed up and be in good condition for the start of the season. During that time the plants can grow back and the banks can recover. The animal life can also breed without disturbance and it is beneficial for every fishery. I would be in favour of extending the close season for late spawning fish and as my club does, of closing the fishery during high temperatures or low oxygen levels Over the years selfish people have tried to get access to the rivers in the close season and they have been stopped. A few years ago there was a poll and keeping the river close season was almost unanimous. If we anglers are allowed to amend the rules then serious changes are needed to address poaching and the taking of fish. Due to poachers we have regular enforcement sessions my club waters and we do catch people. We have found them cooking fish as well as having bags with freshly caught fish to take home. If we are going to amend the rules this must be addressed and prison or huge fines must be the mandatory. At one time the gamekeeper used to batter them but a month in prison would be a better deterrent. We recently stocked our fishery and the three pound barbel cost seventy pounds each. The remains of two were found on the remains of a fire recently. When we catch poachers many of them do not speak english as their first language and claim that having an EA licence allows them to fish. What absolute bollocks to misunderstand but local tackle shops are now tipping us off Poaching or guesting is unacceptable and it is wrong. I could go on but it is unlikely that you will accept the issues. Every club has its own rules and trying to subvert them is a very selfish position and you should consider your statements before making them. You sell tackle to make money so earn it responsibly. You have made comments about the close season but ignored many serious problems that are affecting our fisheries and I am happy to debate the issues on your channel.
Hi Gary! Apologies if I didn't bring across the point clear enough! I am totally IN FAVOUR of a close season! I am merely questioning the concept of the UK close season, as I feel some rules are not tailored enough to the individual species and completely ignore the fish in still waters. I think we're pretty much on a similar page here :) Tight lines! Momo
How is it that we don't need it on stillwaters but we need it on rivers, it is double standards, its just killing the fishing trade at a time where the shops need customers going in and spending money, it needs to change, how many times are we going to have this conversation before something is done

Thanks for your feeback! And: agreed! Tight lines!
Closed season was largely introduced to protect the Trout and Salmon fishing for toffs.
😬😬

Good point 🤔

Aha! Didn't even know that used to be a thing! Interesting 🤔

Closed season, just in time for when the rivers start to return to normal height 😅
Precisely! 🥲🥲🥲

They don’t all spawn in that window though. They all spawn at different times.

It's definitely a much talked about topic! What do you think about the species related close I am touching on in the vid?
