I honestly think that as long as Classic and Modern stay apart in their own games, I really don’t mind. If they keep innovating on Classic gameplay like in Superstars, and Modern gameplay like in Frontiers I will be really happy!
The presentation is also different: we have the environmentalist themes, the nature-filled and colourful zones and the 90s-style funk and dance music with Classic Sonic, and Modern Sonic has a grittier, darker atmosphere with rock music at its heart.
That presentational difference is why I would like to keep Classic and Modern seperated; they just cater to different tastes of presentation.
I agree!
Pretty much exactly how I feel too!
That's kind of how i grew up with Sonic anyway. Classic sonic, i had the mega collection. modern sonic, i had heroes, and the adventure games. I'll be completely satisfied if both keep doing what Superstars and Frontiers did.
@@commentarysheep totally agreed
Both should be equally appreciated. Both had impacted the franchise one way or another.
Classic built it, modern butchered it
I don't hate one and I love the other. I just miss when they were both one character
Same but that division was caused by both the fandom and Sega alike. Ideally it'll be for the best if that division was no more in the future.
Honestly. Classic style games should exist, but modern sonic should be the only design used
@@jayjay-cl1eo The fact that the one time they did this we got Sonic Pocket Adventure and was deemed as a "Masterpiece" by IGN was funny.
@@CaptainF123idk about that. IGN is weird with the ratings they give to games
@@CaptainF123
Does Sonic Advance not ring a bell?
I actually love the way it is, each sonic having their own games because that way I can enjoy a good 2d plataformer and a 3d boost gameplay style
Beautifully well put video. Sonic will always leave some type of legacy whether it's Classic or Modern.

@@lynxfresh5214 oh ok
Beautifully well put? It's full of memes and bashing.
I personally don’t think either Classic or Modern Sonic needs to die, I just think the word “classic” needs to die because at the end of the day whether their designs are different or not their still an interpretation of Sonic.
I hated when both were considered separate characters, but I’m fine with both of them existing as separate styles and interpretations of Sonic, and thankfully, it seems that’s the direction SEGA/Sonic Team are going in. While I personally prefer his modern counterpart, especially with his late 2000s and Frontiers/IDW characterization, both are awesome, and as long as the games are quality, I don’t really care which is used. As far as I’m concerned, Sonic is Sonic.
Everyone should just accept that Mania and Superstars are prequels!
It’s only odd because Sega tried to make this distinction when Mario just is Mario. Sonic should just be Sonic, it was a cool gimmick for generations they decided to then build separate characters around
@@theogofguitar Yeah. Superstars should be the last prequel. Both Sonic and Star Wars are suffering from too many prequels nowadays.
Personally I don't prefer either but I lean towards Classic Sonic due to my love for 2D platformers in general.
I kinda feel the same way tbh, though being able to play as other characters helps too.
@@lynxfresh5214 I agree.
I love Classic Sonic too, but I really love the experimentation of the Modern Sonic games. They've tried to do so many things with the franchise even if it may be alienating to some fans and I think that's really cool for a well-known IP where it would have more profitable to try and play it safe. It's something I really wish more developers would do and something that I really respect about Sonic Team even if I may not think every Modern Sonic game is amzing.
The "OSHIMAS BACK" thing is the most TRUE thing ever
I think this was great for opening a discussion, Matthasnocuts. I really enjoyed it. I think BOTH "Classic Sonic" AND "Modern Sonic" have their strengths and weaknesses.
"I wanted to waste your time"
Jokes on you this video was playing in the background while i did other things so it wasn't wasteful to me at all
Hey Siri, play the first 2 seconds of "3 Peat" by Lil Wayne
You have no idea how badly I want a sonic advance style game again. They have so much more characters to experiment with
Ever since I've gotten into the Sonic series, I found Classic Sonic's gameplay to be a lot more interesting. I also found it to be a lot more fun, and I've come to prefer that style. Don't get me wrong, Modern Sonic still has some great games, in my opinion. My favorite game in the series is a Modern Sonic game. I also loved his gameplay in Sonic Generations, but I prefer the Classic Sonic gameplay. I don't think Classic should go anywhere because this whole debate just comes down to preference. Some prefer the Classic gameplay and style over the Modern Sonic gameplay and style, and vice versa. Anyway, I was awaiting your stance on this debate, Matt, and I'm happy to have finally heard it. The point of casuals preferring 3D over 2D is just how it is. They don't care which design and artstyle are used; they just want a good (3D) game that does what Sonic is known for, going fast. 3D games are just able to interest a broader audience because there's a lot more you can do in a 3D space. That being said, if Superstars was Modern, you could convince me that Sonic Team/SEGA pulled the plug on Classic Sonic after Origins, and just decided that everything will be Modern from then on. If that were the case, then I don't know if I'd be motivated to play any newer Sonic games. If I wanted to play Sonic, I would play a game that came out before this hypothetical decision was made and not care about any of the new stuff they'd be releasing, regardless of how it looked. So, in conclusion, I think Classic should stay due to the people (myself included) who prefer that type of Sonic.
Lmao imagine liking Classic more when the 3D games are so much better in every objective standpoint.
Thinking about Sonic the Hedgehog like this also makes me think about a few of my huge wishes a lot. I really really really miss the great old times. I wish I knew what happened to the multiple major times showing Sonic, his friends, and others in 3D action and stuff after how long it has been. Sorry if no one on this video knows, but I wish there were more. I know eventually there will be more, but I still wish I knew what the deal was for not creating some or even many more for a long, long time. Please, I miss the characters in action.
I feel the same tbh, hence why I prefer the classic titles but I still enjoy the 3D modern games too (except Lost World on the 3DS).
@@lynxfresh5214 Well, um, sure.
Luckily, Tails, Knuckles and Amy are gonna be playable in the last Frontiers update
You need to do a ranking of your favorite Sonic designs from all the different artist's and models for him. That would be super interesting
As someone who loves both styles (Sonic Unleashed is my favorite game, followed by S3K and S2) I find it funny that people constantly go back and fourth between these two styles. I just love both, what else can I say?
Thank you for your honesty! This was highly entertaining. 😆
UNPOPULAR OPINION: I like the game gear games. Matt, pls don't kill me. I know that your opinion matters the most, but that's MY opinion
I don’t like sonic 3 and knuckles
I think both are equally good (with the right physics)
I mean Classic Sonic gameplay is more consistently good compared to Modern Sonic Gameplay so i get why people prefer that over the modern games
I mean… they’re the same person-
I don't care if the mordern sonic is better the classic or vice-versa, i just wanna play sonic god damit
Honestly I have a lot of trouble picking between the two. The peak of Classic imo is CD/Ova, while the peak of Modern is storybook games, and picking between one of those two things is really close. They both have that cool shonen vibe. But I'd have to pick modern due to the consistency of his cool edginess. Very hard choice tho.
Ova? There's no such thing. Also, aren't the Storybook games hated for their bad gameplay?
Other Sonic fans: Can't decide between classic and modern Sonic.
Me: Waiting when everyone to finally understand that the best design was in the first Sonic Adventure in the Dremcast version, which combines the best aspects of both designs and all you need is to increase the number of polygons in the model (which can be seen in the opening CGI cutscene of the game).
Jesus, imagine if Mario fans said that classic 2D have to die and hate Wonder despite one decade without new 2D games and yet they gonna criticise it, i dunno what possed the fucking hedgehog fandom be the way that it is today, they probably don't have nothing to do
In my honest review, I like classic sonic more idk why
Edit: I liked my own comment
I swear this whole debate didn't exist before Superstars... everybody was on board after Mania and theory crafting like YEEAAAHHHHH YOOO WHAT IF WE HAD A 2D CLASSIC GAME EVERY YEAR AS A SIDE SERIES or something, but then when they saw Superstars had a 3D artstyle it completely broke their brains and now we have this pointless argument
Anyways, good video. I remember back in Sonic Classic Collection when they had modern Sonic representing the classic games and nobody cared (i think lol). Sonic is Sonic.
I prefer the modern Sonic games, but I still like the classic/classic-styled ones, and I’m fine with them just doing both.
Great vid
Interesting video! 💪I honestly think they should be judged differently as their own thing when they are separated. But we can all agree Modern usually has more substance lol
I love it. Great video.
16:02 Yes, yes tell us how you really feel Matthasnocuts
Sonic fans should really start remembering that there's the rush and advance games too. Classic sonic is greatand i love everything about it, there's just nothing in classic sonic that can replicate anything from the rush games. The homing attack and rush feel so rewarding when you start getting good.
Love it man. Absolutely LOVE IT
I just hate how Classic Sonic was somewhat responsible for the games becoming more unoriginal after fan outcries. When I was growing up, I had Sonic Rush which was amazing and felt like the older 2D games without all the rehashed elements of the recent games featuring Classic Sonic. But yeah I just really want another Sonic Game like Sonic Rush man.
It really is just the models for me. Classic Sonic's design is so much better. Just look at the two images he put on the screen with the two sonics pulling their gloves. Classic looks so much cooler!
The fact I can play as Tails and Knux from the beginning in the classic era titles (S3&K, Maina, Superstars, etc) after they were gradually introduced in earlier titles as new additions while I had to essentially wait a lifetime to play as them again as DLC in a Modern era game aka Frontiers (despite both of them being established core characters to the legacy of the franchise) says it all imo, classic superiority all the way (bonus points for Amy officially becoming the 4th member of team Sonic/Heroes in these past few years as another core legacy character).
And before someone tries to gaslight or strawman me, no I'm not a 2D purists and I truly believe going 3D was for the best (Unleashed is in my top 5 favourite Sonic games), it was poor management, crunch and listening to non-Sonic fans that caused the inconsistent quality of the games for years.
Ideally it should be just "Sonic games" but until multiple playable characters are a mainstay again in the "modern era" games and there isn't a sense of one playstyle/artstyle stepping on the toes of another, that divide will continue to be perpetuated I'm afraid (Still waiting for those Advance and Rush collections on Switch btw).
I disagree on going 3D being the right choice. Both can exist.
I don't even know why asking the question. Between Classic Sonic that is an infinite boucle of monotony and repetitiveness, with an absence of personality, a simple design and a moderately interesting story tone (the most interesting is in Japanese manuals), and Modern Sonic with an attaching personality, a cool and nice design (even better in CGI), incredibly beautiful CGI cutscenes (only Smash Bros. has this same CGI quality), and a skill to make every kind of story interesting, unpredictable and epic, no matter its style, the answer to this question is pretty obvious. And Frontiers only give force to this fact, since it wouldn't be same without it.
Am fine with either Sonic so long as the game plays stay consistent in quality as the years go by.
Lets go w video
GET THIS MAN TO 50K SUBS!
I would also love to see three styles of games: Action/Platformer, Platformer, and RPG/Adventure.
So basically there are two sides in this debate: The side who thinks Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic can get their own games separately, and the side who's wrong. Yeah, can't say I'm having a hard time picking one.
I appreciate Classic Sonic as Sonic's misadventures as a child and Modern Sonic as his current adventures
I love 3D blast 😢*sniff* you have hurted my feeling
4:54 *There is no edge with this dude.*
They’re both amazing
I do not believe it would neither have to do with classic or modern, it's more about 2D and 3D regardless of the aesthetic, I was doubting Superstars at first but it's refreshing and I cannot describe how excited I am for that upcoming release, take for instance the Advance series, they were 2D outings with the modern aesthetic that were not only great but so much potential can be derived from them, Advance 1 being the most barebone one had an instant summersault as well as rail grinding and a non rolling Amy Rose, the second introduced the trick system and I know emerald hunting was a pain in the ass, but the concept was neat and felt really fast, while the third entry broght a miryad of character combitations being the most ambitious one of the bunch, 2D can coexist with 3D Sonic regardless of the aesthetic so long as SEGA chill out with the nostalgia pandering and try to expand on the 2D formula.
They all seem cool, no matter what game is better. Because it’s how it make it exist into Sonic The Hedgehog.
10:59 bro really said 👉
14:02 ehhh idk, Mania didn't launch with a physical release and i feel that definitely effects it
The short leading to this video made this man look like an average "Classic Sonic Bad" guy, sorry if I got mad at the short's comment section since I took it too seriously.
*EDIT*: The last part got me surprised like Classic Sonic should die but he's better lol, honestly I think this debate should die. SEGA shouldn't hurt us Classic Sonic fans more by giving our boy a lighter blue that looks like cyan sometimes and a chubby cute look every time we see him, I think that for the sake of the legacy of our boy... He should rest in peace and not be sad for what could've happened but happy for what did happen and what made Classic Sonic Classic Sonic.
SEGA should try making a 3D Classic Sonic game!
Bro has peak in the background
The entire debate doesn't revolve around which is better, it revolves around the need for having two characters at all. The problem lies when Classic Sonic becomes a separate entity because it limits the style of games they make, it puts the lore all over the place with 2 Sonics coexisting, and it being its own thing means we can't have cool characters like Fang, Mighty or Ray return in Modern form.
In the end, the debate is about whether this debate should even be a thing in the first place. They should both be Sonic, so I'm pretty sure the people on the "Classic needs to die" side just want Sonic to be Sonic.
One point I never see is that many other series have games that take place in different parts of their timeline. Superstars for example could just be an earlier point in the timeline, though that “other dimension” BS in Forces conflicts with that.
I would also love to see modern versions of Mighty or Ray, but that can be in a 3D game.
I don’t have anything to add in regards to your other points, I don’t know my stance on EVERYTHING :P
@@mariocraft3067 The point though, is why do we have to do what Superstars does where yet another Classic Sonic adventure is just squeezed into the timeline by taking place in the past
@@BurningJRed5733 Yet another? The only other classic Sonic game to be released in the last 30 or so years is Mania, and even that game has mostly reused zones, so not exactly a brand new adventure.
Not that it would be unacceptable if there never was a new game with the classic design (If you can call the cutesy Generations model to be the “classic design”), I wouldn’t mind seeing it have more Modern characters in it as long as the classic gameplay keeps its identity. Perhaps it’s a marketing thing, like if people see classic Sonic then they will know what kind of game they will be playing.
personally, I like both. I just don't like them getting so mixed up, and by that I mean when they're making classic/modern game design they should try to take inspiration from modern/classic game design respectively. I would love a generations 2.
What is actually really funny is that whether you like it or not, classic sonic had more ambition because he had the objective to take down mario, and the classic era was the closest sonic team ever was in their quest, because by the time the saturn and dreamcast were out, sega realised that they couldn' t compete with nintendo and the adventure games felt like a melanconic goodbye for sonic
Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the one time they brought them all together as a team & allowed them to finish their work. They got it right.
Then Sonic Mania was the one time they let die hard, highly skilled fans make what we all wanted in a present day, classic setup. After many years of waiting, to a pretty fair degree, they got it right.
I'm waiting for a modern Sonic game to be released where the overall consensus is... "they got it right."
Excellent video with an excellent message. I agree that both versions of Sonic have merit and can be great. However...
I will not take the 3D Blast SLANDER!
Imo Modern Sonic has the bigger legacy compared to Classic Sonic, other than the fact that he has the much grander stories there's one thing that he has to his advantage, the Multimedia and collaborations:
Nearly all Sonic media outside the games either use Modern's design (Sonic X, Prime, Mario and Sonic games, the countless merch and collaborations) or a new design based on Modern Sonic (Boom and the Movies) meanwhile Classic's design was mainly used in the 90s and almost never again (with a few exceptions ofc) when it comes to multimedia and even when he's used nowadays he's referred to as "Classic Sonic" meanwhile modern is just referred to as "Sonic"
Personally, I don’t care because they’re both the same character one is older and one is technically younger, but if they’re in their own games, I am happy personally, I really think maybe one day they might make classic sonic game like sonic frontiers. That will be pretty cool, and I also hope one day they will change the design to the hand, animated design, that you see in sonic origins and sonic mania
classic sonic was 18 during the genesis trilogy (1,2,CD,3) until sonic jam when they made him 16
The winner is the friends we made along the way
I actually enjoy both classic and modern sonic. Mania,Frontiers the classic sonic gamecube collections and Sonic Adventure 1 are some of my favorites. Even though I played sonic on the game gear first I've enjoyed my journey so far. Looking forward to superstars. 🙂❤📚
This whole twitter debate is kinda dumb they both can exist in the same time as long as classic sonic games doesn’t affect the development of the main 3D games.
Sonic: Wait... should I feel a sense of defeat or triumph?... I just lost and won simultaneously I'm conflicted
Storybook Sonic is just Goated🐐
Modern sonic is better in my opinion but classic is fine as well.
To be honest I prefer modern sonic over classic sonic BUT I do love both! As long as modern sonic and classic sonic stay in their own games I dont care! 😁
I just love the fast action modern sonic has over classic sonic and I love the high speeds and thrilling action modern sonic has! 😁
Thanks so much for this video and can't wait for more and have a nice day Matt! 😁
Still asking about the sonic mania review
I think Classic Sonic can stay (needs to look more like OVA Sonic tho, Sega and Hesse make him too cute). I may not care for him, but others do and who am I to say they should lose him?
That said, Modern Sonic deserves his own 2D games as well. Classic Sonic games shouldn't make 2D Modern Sonic games obsolete.
Wish there’s an adventure sonic (even tho he’s basically modern sonic)
Yeah you pronounced my name right
My opnion: Modern is Wayyyyyyyyy Better, but i don't think Classic Sonic Should Die.
Instead of me making a video about this (which I probably could) I'm just gonna say it's just sonic and I love both of them they're cute :D
I don't think Classic Sonic should die and that doesn't mean that I prefer him over Modren Sonic to me his just Sonic at the end of the day they are the same character but from diffrent timelines (maybe IDK the lore is confusic af)
It must be pretty nice having your life's biggest concern being tall hedgie or smol hedgie
i wish SEGA Made Sonic Prime “The SonicVerse”
Hey, Drift is an alright 8 bit racer. Also Tails Adventure was actually pretty darn good. Plus there’s Triple Trouble which isn’t perfect but it’s solid enough.
I think Matthasnocuts is awesome! I think he’s spot on with the fact that Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic should stay separate. I personally think that Sega would have more avenues to explore in their games than solely Modern Sonic. While 3D Sonic focuses on being more edgy and cool and shows what can be done in Sonic’s universe, another story could focus on a whole dimension or dynamic.
At the end of the day, both are still here and they’re not going anywhere.
My opinion is I feel like Classic has more consistent games (I only play the Mainline Games since side games are just too much for me) while Modern’s Peaks are higher than Classic’s.
Both are goats and I wouldn’t have one without the other even when games like 06, Sonic 4 Episode 1, and Forces Exist.
As long as both do good for the rest of the run, I’m fine with it.
It’s the great feeling I get when Classic is getting Stronger and hangs out with his friends so Modern Sonic can Improve and grow as his own person.
2D, I feel will never get a bad game while Modern’s growing to the point where I don’t think It’ll fail anymore since it learned from its mistakes in the past and use even their worst game’s highlights.
The best way I can put it is I’d prefer if a 3D Sonic Game is Better than a 2D one for the atmosphere, Dialogue, and Ambition it has but Classic Sonic Walked so that Modern Sonic could run.
Yes. Because "Modern" isn't a formula so much as it is a series of formulas for the 3D games. Adventure. Boost. Whatever you wanna call Frontiers (Boost, but in an open world). "Modern" is a much bigger genre of Sonic, and there's way more that you can do with it than 2D. The closest to doing new, creative things 2D Sonic has come up with some new characters that are basically Sonic clones with 1 or 2 unique abilities and a more in-depth partner system than what S2 and S3&K offered. A partner system that was abandoned after the Advance series ended and came back in Sonic 4 Episode 2, where you only had Sonic and Tails doing Sonic and Tails stuff from the old games + a new rolling attack. And I guess Superstars is coming in trying to be New Super Mario Bros for Sonic a lot too late.
Classic is a formula that, at least prior to Superstars (and even then, I'm not holding my breath), has been doing the same thing it's been doing since Sonic 2 with minor additions and occasional innovations that get thrown out shortly after. Modern has been doing all sorts of things for better or worse, the former serving as a translation of the 2D formula into 3D doing cool things with the other characters to make them stand out as themselves rather than "Sonic but with [extra power]". It is an overall better and more interesting genre than 2D, which generally refuses to do anything but piggyback of S2 and S3&K. Call me when Classic Sonic starts taking inspiration from the Advance games, and then we can talk. Until then, Modern > Classic.
This isn't even getting into what 3D/Modern has done in terms of storytelling and characterization that you just can't get with some sprites and cute animations.
me and you have the exact same thoughts
Never really cared which Sonic is used for what, just if he looks cool or not (why did they make classic sonic much rounder and softer?)
All I want is consistency and pillars to setup spinoffs rather than switching everything every other game (tbf, lost world was the last time they did this, but Sonic should keep the parkour moveset as his character gimmick)
What I'd like is
* 2.5D Platformer that goes all in on experimenting with the 3D in 2D aspect (Blaze can keep her boost bar gimmick while either Sonic or Shadow could get the boost mode gimmick from Advance 2)
* 3D Adventure style that experiments with rolling physics and speed based combat FOR BOSSES especially
* 3D Boost style that STAYS 3D, but focuses on linear SA2 styled levels. Honestly they could fuse the storybook series with boosting gameplay
Both are great on their own.
It like the boost formula the best when it is good. I would have loved to have a no wisp 100 perecent boost game.
You should check out Sonic Colors DS it's a really good game some people even say that it's better than it's Wii counterpart
I think Classic Sonic has a better legacy due to him rivaling Mario in the console war
Well I grew up with the boost formula never played any classic sonic game I did play mania and that was fun
Honestly I Like Both and as long Sega keeps giving us good games like Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Superstars and they don’t pull a lost world( I don’t think lost world is a bad game is just the execution isn’t that great)like they did after Sonic Generations or FORCES after Mania, then we are good.
You be spitting facts here. Everything you said was gold. Put the sunglasses on and relax as cringey Sonic Twitter shits the bed.
I think both Modern & Classic Sonic games are equally good!
I like both
I think it's funny fighting over which Sonic is best, I like both personally. Now that being said MODERN SONIC IS MY GOAT
Everytime a new Sonic game is announced, the community goes back to complaining about something
I think co-existence is important because of Classic’s and Modern’s different gameplay and presentation/art style.
Both game series have different takes on presenting Sonic. For example: the environmentalist themes in the Classic games, the levels that showcase that nature-technology divide or co-existence, the 90s dance/funk vibes in the music has a CONSIDERABLY different feeling compared to the gritty and darker vibes and the rock music of the Modern games.
It’s not just the gameplay, but also the presentation that caters to different subsections of the Sonic fandom. That is why they need to keep existing together, but in seperate games.
I prefer Classic Sonic because I like its presentation and 2D gameplay more than the 3D games and their presentation, but I am still open to some of the 3D games (Unleashed and Generations were great, by the way).
It’s not just the gameplay, it’s also the presentation and vibes that subcommunities like.
I completely 100% agree with you and Unleash, I don't care at all about classic Sonic
In the words of Mephiles the Dark... "The answer is both yes... and no."
both can co-exist but i want another rush styled game
Two of my favourite Sonic games are Frontiers and Mania, So to me they're just great games.
Its really just a matter of preference. I prefer 3D sonic and adventure while i have a best friend who prefers 2D sonic and classic/Rush. We always watch each other play and are intrigued that we're decent in our preferred sonic games lol, no reason to fight and coexisting is not a bad thing although i would love for Current modern sonic to stop with the 2D segments throw into his games and keep it pure 3D like adventure.
