I’ve always agreed with the two timeline theory 🤔 With the timeline set up like this, it allows for Silver to change the past to change the future without causing paradoxes and could cause the different futures in CD to technically all be canon, including the bad ending. Ok so most people say that Classic Sonic is from the past, and most people say that Classic Sonic is from another dimension. Well to me, Classic Sonic is obviously from the past since it was mentioned by Amy Rose in TailsTube that Classic Sonic grew up to be Modern Sonic. But back in Sonic Forces, Tails claimed that Classic Sonic is from another dimension, and The Phantom Ruby is affectin’ other dimensions. But this doesn’t make sense, Classic Sonic is from the past, so how did The Phantom Ruby affect the past than just other dimensions? 🧐
So I think this is what happens:
Classic Sonic (from gens) has met tails, but hasn't met knuckles yet (meaning sonic 1, CD, and 2 has occurred). He then travels to the future, and the events of sonic generations occur. Somehow, both Eggmans break free and return to their timelines. Sonic 3 and knuckles takes place, and classic sonic is shocked by classic knuckles villainous actions (because he saw that knuckles is his friend from his visit to the future). Mania then takes place sometime after the death egg is destroyed, and Eggman goes into depression, building the hot-boiled heavies. Classic sonic then travels to the future, and sonic forces occurs. After classic sonic returns, sonic mania plus occurs, and sonic meets mighty and ray. Eventually team sonic and mighty/ray go their separate ways, and sonic adventure takes place, a long time after mania. It seems the radiation of the master emerald affects the members of the cast, ageing them up, which is how we get their modern appearances (don't really worry about that though).
J's reviews does pretty good job explaining the sonic timeline and I think this is like 95% accurate
I agree with that twitter post about the alternate timelines. It just makes the most sense. When classic sonic was initially pulled in generations it was just younger sonic, but after returning the timeline split. We don't even know that mania's classic sonic is the same classic sonic we saw in generations. I suppose in all universes (where sonic is alive) classic sonic will always grow up to be a modern sonic (albeit one with his own version of events, i.e. adventure might happen differently or not happen at all). I suppose this is what they were getting at by that conversation tails and amy had in that tails tube episode. The sonic devs seem to be known for doing a lot of hand waving and not acknowledging the implications of their own lore, or whether or not official statements make sense or contradict previous official statements.

Ok so Classic Sonic from Sonic Generations is a lighter Blue then 1991 - 1996 He was Dark blue so he kidnapped that Sonic then I don't know how he got out so Classic Sonic from Sonic Generations is actually Santiago named after a place.
sonic mania adventures takes place immediately after forces cause after mania, sonic is transported into the modern timeline to help modern defeat infinite. then, sonic goes back to his timeline, and sonic mania adventures happens. we can see this cause at the end of forces, sonic waves to the modern cast then goes back to his timeline, and then in sonic mania adventures we can see sonic attempting to wave to them modern cast.

When they were introduced Classic Sonic in Sonic Generations, they were said to be the same but one from the past and one from the present. The differentiation was a Mania/Frontiers thing.

What if it was that I mean what time itself had rules what if time automatically wipe out every information that could possibly fracture the tissue of the timeline to keep it from an time mess with things be there who aren’t supposed to be outcomes who could lead to universal chaos with time distortion and everything what if time automatically aim to keep itself together by wiping out things in the mind of poeple that aren’t supposed to know those things yet that are way too big to not change the timeline
in forces classic is said to come from an alternate dimension. So my theory is the classic sonic from generations becomes an alternate dimension of sonic after getting sent back which leads to sonic mania

As sonic will still grow up to have green eyes just because you met your past self doesn’t mean they will still be a kid forever and even then classic doesn’t even know the context to a lot of these locations so it won’t change his path to adventure

Classic is from the past, Sonic Forces wanted to make an alternative timeline but the Sonic Team change it to be just one timeline, and for Ian Flynn is not in the Sonic Team so I don't think he is the one to decide if the Classic is an alternative timeline, it's just making a bigger mess

This is my vague idea:
Clasic Sonic games hapend. Adventure and Advance games story arcs hapend.
06 resets the timeline.
A timeline where Solaris never existed follows where Sonic reached the same outcome but with diferent events (hence why neather Sonic or Tails don't remember Green Hill or any Sonic Adventure, Heroes or Shadow the Hedgehog events are mentioned again),
Rivals, Rush, Unleashed, and Colors hapend.
The time eater shifts time restoring the timeline to a unified line of events (that's why Crisis City is broght back despite Solaris never existed)
The characters regain memories of the events errased by Solaris (Sonic says that Green Hill is one of his favourite places in Forces)
The past versions of Sonic and Tails are sent back to their timeline were events no longer can hapend the way they did originaly which redefines this past timeline as a new dimension.
Both dimensions coexist but the energy generated by the time fracture cristalizes into the phantom ruby (it's the only origin I can come up with for the phantom ruby).
The phantom ruby is sent by accident to the modern dimension along Classic Sonic where eggman finds it and makes prototipes of it, at the end of the game eggman uses the original phantom ruby which doesn't need energy feedback like the artificial ones. After it's destroyed Classic Sonic goes back to the classic dimension where the Ruby regenerates from the portal.
The ruby disapears.
Now the classic dimension is completaly indpendent from the modern timeline and Sonic Supersars follows.

I think… classic sonic and modern sonic are not separate universes what so ever, it’s just the art style that’s different. The characters are the same, the world is the same, just the designs of the characters are different, that’s just how sonic and his buddies look in 2D

Classic sonic is a younger version of sonic but in sonic forces when tails says he’s sonic from a different TIMELINE so he’s a different sonic down to the atoms but that’s just my theory
The problem with having time travel in lore is that if there's inconsistencies, the lore just defaults to "there's infinite timelines because of the multiverse", which is a lazy way to have lore imo. And not as interesting as having to make a singular universe work.
Like CD coming after Sonic 1 instead of 2 or 3k and Blaze being from the Sol Dimension instead of the future so I wouldn't take the stories too seriously because things are allowed to change and what they're establishing now we should at face value. They've confirmed that Classic Sonic grows up to be Modern Sonic meaning they're the same Sonic I mean Modern does gain the ability to drop dash in Frontiers.

Timeline alterations create branch timelines.
So, Classic Sonic is Sonic from the past, but after he experienced the future, now things don't go the same way as it did for Modern Sonic. Modern Sonic did not experience Mania and the Classic IDW comics. Classic Sonic already experienced every Classic game, but will not experience any Modern game.
Sadly this means that every time Silver comes to the past to fix the future, what he's causing is another branch timeline where this time the future is changed. Meaning there are existing timelines where the world is overrun with the Eggman virus or taken over by Ifrit, or completely destroyed by Solaris.
Basically it's almost the same as time travel in the MCU. I'd love to dive deeper into this, so if you ever run out of content ideas hmu!
i have a thought if classic sonic grows up do be modern sonic then not only should he know who he is but classic should also know who all of modern sonics friends are two and he should know places like crisis city spagonia and planet wisp when he gets to them in the future when he becomes modern sonic it rly doesn't make sense when u think about it

I think this implies they are considering the timeline created by Gen to be a "dimension" because time is a dimension...or something. Either way it is clear they are just calling the Mania Timeline spawned by the events of Gen a separate "dimension".
(My head canon) Sonic mania begins right after sonic generations. i know this because Sonic mania starts in green hill and in the final cutscene sonic and tails jump into a time portal showing green hill 1:14 but instead of taking a time portal to the present green hill they go a little into the future this can be backed up by crisis city in sonic generations. After all crisis city is in the future so it’s not that far fetched and after taking the time portal boom sonic mania starts. The only reason c.s. Is in sonic Forces is because the fantom ruby which took him into the future and into sonic forces.however sonic forces doesn’t take place right after generations as we last saw robotnik and egg man in the white space so the fantom ruby took c.s. A few years into the future but all this for c.s. Happens in a matter of hours

(Classic) generations and forces never happened and sonic lives his life out to be modern sonic and any references to those games like the the phantom ruby (I never played sonic mania so I don't know if that's a main part in the game or if that's a DLC or smt idk) so because of that lets just say sonic mania isn't canon to the original classic timeline
(New Classic) reason modern sonic doesnt remember memories from generations or forces from his past is this: new classic is the split timeline from generations and this is the split part which is counted as "new classic" because its part of the updated time but as if an action in a timeline happens in one in a parrelel timeline that sprung off to be an alternate reality (alternatively called a dimension) making new classic and sonic mania (still not sure though correct me in a respond if I'm wrong) not canon.
NOTE: if I'm wrong and the phantom ruby isn't important to sonic mania just not sonic mania plus than sonic mania plus isn't but sonic mania isn't, I just never played sonic mania so I cant fact check that.
ALSO: 1 correct me if I'm wrong and 2 I will be wrong if these people appear in future sonic media BUT the people who he said was important in sonic mania who hasn't been seen before, my suspicion is that something happened in between generations/forces (I don't know where mania is on the classic timeline) and mania that generations had set up to happening like lets say sonic was running through green hill, he would be a few minutes slower as he was distracted for a minute from what happened in generations so he was set off a few seconds leading him to bump into them and they became friends or smt (that's just my hypothesis though I do want to see them in future sonic media as they look cool)

I have a fairly simple explanation, as a self-proclaimed time travel expert:
All of the events of the canon Sonic games happen up until Generations. In Generations, Classic Sonic is brought forward in time by Eggman and the Time Eater. Meeting Modern Sonic DOES change Classic Sonic's future, but it can't change Modern Sonic's past, so it instead creates a separate timeline at the point that Classic Sonic returns to his own time. So the Classic Timeline is all the events Classic Sonic experiences, being the classic games AND Mania. Modern Sonic USED to be Classic Sonic, but the new Classic Sonic will not grow up to be Modern Sonic due to the timeline splitting creating an alternate dimension. And then Classic Sonic returning in Forces is because BOTH Eggmen discover the Phantom Ruby around the same time, and there's some sort of reality warping shenanigans there.

thats a little theory that i think it will settle this which is: i think that classic sonic that we see in sonic generations is the same sonic from sonic forces and because the classic sonic from sonic generations he still cant do the drop dash from sonic mania but when he goes back to his time line and modern sonic goes to sonic lost world they meet again and in sonic forces classic sonic can do the drob dash (i think😅😅) and after the end of sonic forces classic sonic travels back again to his timeline and faces a little adventure with his classic friends how do you know you may ask because we can see that little adventure in sonic mania adventures and sonic mania plus and sonic mania, and then the story goes on in the upcoming games of sonic,so yeah that was my theory and i hope you will read it all (ahhhh finally I'm finished)

This is definitely an interesting discussion that's going to take a while to answer. However, I think that because of the Time Eater, there are now a bunch of different timelines out there, with the main ones being Classic and Modern. But, one thing I'd like to know is where Dreamcast Sonic is in all this timeline stuff. Is Dreamcast Sonic in another timeline, or does he not exist anymore? They were planning to have him in this game, but he was cut for a reason that I'm unaware of. I honestly think it would create even more confusion if he did make it in, so it's probably for the best. 😅

I think everything Sonic can be cannon including Classic, Modern, Movie, and Boom Sonic. Some aspects are different interpretations of the same event like Sonic meeting Tails in the movie, meeting him in Sonic Mania, and meeting him in Sonic 2 the game. Classic Sonic is a younger version of Modern Sonic and he time traveled to Sonic Generations but perhaps instead of returning home he got transported directly to Sonic Forces.

i have my own theory tho, if you play sonic mania you must be familiar with the purple gem in the first cutscene of the game, that gem was called the Phantom Ruby witch also appear in sonic Forces as Infinites power, now if you look at the ending of sonic mania good ending you will see after the true final boss with Eggman, a portal spawned in there witch is in the ending sonic and the ruby got sucked into the portal witch the portal lead classic sonic in mania to the future in the events of sonic forces and then if you look in the sonic mania good ending, Sonic did the same pose when he appears in the sonic forces trailer. thats my theory. i hope sonichub read my comment
