Swim teacher here. I subscribed simply because you get straight to it in your videos. Thank you for not filling up the intro with so much junk. We can use your whole video, as is, from the jump. So nice.
There are many gold medalists in swimming, but I've never seen anyone swim as gracefully and beautifully as she does. Before going to the pool, I always watch videos of Stephanie Rice for image training. Thank you for the great videos.
This is the premier video for backstroke. Great angles and great form! It's so elegant that after watching you I've been taking backstroke more seriously.. It's a stroke that kind of doesn't get a lot of love from amateurs.
perfect timing, I think I mastered butterfly yesterday after almost 10 years of trying - learn the chest press going forward “secret” was the last step - now it’s time for backstroke which is my slowest in IM, even slower than breaststroke which certainly needs some work😊
Aww that’s fantastic news. Love that for you! Perfect timing too. I’m sure these tips will help you to improve your backstroke. Also check out my other stroke videos too 🙌🏼
@@michellec3100 the center of gravity needs to be put towards the head aftet the recovery, sounds counterintuitive but it's the only way to stay with the hips near the water surface, but I'm not an expert, I can swim only about half the speed what Olympians do and only up to 100m🙈but even that was hard for an amatuer without a coach
@@northsta thank you! I have no coach either and butterfly is my goal I thought in 2 years. I give it 5 years now, haha. Or for my 60th birthday. Gosh I wish I discovered swimming earlier or had access closer to a pool like now. Will remember hips up by heavy head👍
The new video production is great! I love the slow motion sections, the extended length and detailed explanation, thank you so much! (Drone spotted 5:31 )
Having such excellent insights into swimming makes you a wonderful teacher! All the intricate little movements that you detail has made my technique improve and feel safer on my shoulders! Thanks so much Steph!
My favorite stroke is the old school over arm side stroke, which is faster than breast and back stroke, but that is another story. Swimming on my side, I see everything in the pool, and as one of my lap pals says, I overanalyze everything. So, there is a subtle difference between the flutter kick in freestyle and back stroke. With freestyle, in order to get your lower leg into position so you can generate some thrust, you have to flex at the hip. Of course, too much flex at the hip and you create more drag. Too little and you don't generate thrust. With back stroke, if you try to do the exact same kick as with freestyle, your knee comes out of the water. Generally there is more flexing at the knee with back stroke. The lower leg is also more stream lined than your thigh and knee, so a little less drag is created. Also a funny thing, many have 'runner's foot' with their ankle being bent to 30 or so degrees when doing freestyle flutter kick. The same swimmers, when swimming back stroke seem to have a much better toe point. Another thing on the hand/arm pull. You are doing this, and probably 99% of those I see swimming back stroke do this. At about the 3/4 point of the arm pull, going into the finish part of the pull, the palm rotates over, and that final finish wrist whip energy goes straight to the bottom of the pool rather than towards the back wall. To me, the palm should stay pretty much vertical, and the final whip should end up with the palm flat against your thigh. If it was freestyle, your coach would correct you, but only I seem to notice this.
That's such a Wonderful lesson coming right from the Champ herself😃 Great going Mam👏 👍 Keep Inspiring and Keep Rocking 🤗 Looking forward to more such useful tips.
Hand pushing down at end of hand stroke , this is totally new for me my coach keep asking me to push axial till my pocket ...i will jump now on my pool trying to do that....
My struggle with backstroke is to keep my line straight. In the big pool, I always swam in the curving line. So embarrassing whenever I bumped into other people in the pool😅
My main problem is the asymmetry in using the muscles, because I'm used to throw things with the right hand/arm, the left side can't apply the muscles properly.
PALM enters the water, NOT the back of the hand.,head looking at the feet. Look at the body roll because of the back of the hand leading instead of the palm. You have no idea,
There is no way you're pinkie's entering first. Your whole palm is not entering side ways pinkie first. 0:35. You are turning your palm under the water.🕵♀
How to keep straight in an outdoor pool please? Eyes on the sky and I crash into the lane dividers and have to turn my head often to check. Off falls the bottle😅🫣
I have this problem too, tho it’s gotten better with more practice. Usually happens after I kick off the wall off a lap of butterfly when I practice my IM. Obviously when you kick off the walk off straight, that’s it.

Nose clip
Just snort out the water that gets in your nose and swallow the rest
I have the same problem. Hard to keep breathing effectively
Tip your head a bit further backwards

So glad to hear :)
How do I learn to blow bubbles for a long time trying to do underwater butterfly, so water do not go up my nose, even when doing backstroke
You are the best teacher
Awesome, thank you!! It does look like your wrist ultimately becomes higher than your elbow during the last part of the catch phase correct?

What kind of dryland workout especially helps backstroke?
Thanks stephanie that was nice tutorial

What is pinky finger?
The smallest finger on your hand.
When I swim backstroke, water keep splashing into my nose and break my swimming 😕
That will be because of the timing of your breathing. You shouldn’t be breathing in through the nose…only the mouth
@@stephanierice-swimming thanks, maybe use a nose clip?
You help me swim fast
