Actually, quite a few of the optimised games work fine, even running from an external HDD. For instance, Halo MCC, Ori, Rocket League, Desperados 3 all work fine from my collection. I'm sure there are more as well.
You get the visual and frame rate enhancements, and can use quick resume, just not the loading time boosts.
Only a select handful of games don't work at all externally, and need to be transferred when required. Examples of these are The Medium and Forza Horizon 4.

just a quick note, none of the drives showcased in this video are HDD drives. they are all SSD. but i would imagine (for lack of research) that the expansion cards are m.2 SSDs which is why they’re faster and much much smaller. Solid state drives have been in most tech over the last 5 years. HDD was the cause for many red rings of death back in the day of the 360 and that was one of the first things to go with the newer xbox one

FYI you can buy a pc external drive and format it on the xbox but the drive has to have photos on it first before you plug it into the xbox. Hopes this helps and saves you money. Cost me $60 for 2TB

The problem I have with Seagate is they notoriously fail especially when storage capacity reaches over 60%. My friend had the 4TB Seagate for Xbox One and lost ALL his games. He was so pissed off he bought a PS4. I have a 1TB WD My Passport that I am saving for emergencies. I currently use a 2TB WD My Passport that is 50% full that has performed flawlessly for my Xbox One X. I just bought a 5TB My Passport for under $100 and comes with a 3 year warranty. I can keep all my games- 55 currently on that and transfer to the 1TB internal as needed. They also make 6TB and up MY Book that are under $200. WD also makes the Black SSD external. WD claims it to be almost as fast as the velocity architecture Microsoft is using. These work on PC, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series so it may be worth looking into.

Updated info: mechanical drives(sATA to USB 3.1) are simply not fast enough for anything newer than 360. I get Xbox one level stutter with a 3.5” 4tb 7200. Solid state is your only option for the series S, which I’ve never been able to fit 12 games on the internal 500gb. A 2TB SSD is your best price per $$, and I wouldn’t go any lower than 2.5TB of storage for a XSS, and no less than 3TB for an XSX. Based on average game size of 120GB.

Only thing that wasn't mentioned is that any game that is Series X|S optimised or only available on X|S will not play from external HDD / SSD will only play from the internal drive OR the dedicated " expansion" card so this answers alot people's questions yes Microsoft dreamed this up just to milk a additional wad of cash out of your pockets so for the interim I won't be bothering with the card as all my games are still xb one so those will run from HDD as they always have X card new games SSD for Ur fav xb one titles

The amount of space I have left is great so I could keep adding a vast collection of games I can play week to week instead of COD. Lastly, hopefully it’s transferable for the next gen console 👀🙏

    • @andrewc3294

Of the optimised games currently on series x/s, there are more of them that you actually CAN play from external drives than there are that you can't. Halo MCC, Ori, Rocket League, Football Manager, and a good few others all work perfectly fine, even from an external HDD. You also get the visual and frame rate upgrades and can use quick resume. All you lose are the improved load times.
For the ones that don't work, it takes literally minutes to transfer them across when needed. From an HDD you can transfer 100GB across to the internal storage in less than 30 minutes.
