I think a laptop with a USB-C dock is hard to beat, you get the best of both worlds, especially considering that the SoC in the MacBook Pros are identical to versions of the Mac mini and Studio so you’re not compromising on performance. This is what I do for my setup, I replaced a first gen AMD Ryzen PC tower and a 2016 15” MacBook Pro with a single M1 Pro equipped 14”MacBook Pro with a Lenovo USB-C dock, and it outpaces both of those machines by a country mile, and gets amazing battery life when I’m on the go, something the 2016 MBP could hardly do. For the first time ever I feel no need to have a desktop machine.
Best thing about the current Mini external design is it uses so little space. I still have & use my 2018 6-core i5 Mini for running software/apps NOT optimized for Apple Silicon & have an M2 Mini as my daily driver. 👍🏽💯👏🏽
The Apple Silicon Mac Minis have so much free space that they could redesign it and release an even smaller version! Maybe Apple is intentionally and carefully nerfing it to not undermine the Macbooks' portability as a selling point or something, but as a non-Mac user, it would be very interesting to see a truly mini Mac.
Currently watching the vid, noticed an error. At 3:25 there is no Multi score for the 2019 MBP 16" Anyways, love the vids man! Keep up the awesome work
I so wish they would bring back the ability to upgrade their stuff. I so hate using apple at this point, but ive just not had the best luck with windows and my audio hardware/DAW.
Why? What do you want to upgrade? Just order specs that you need from the factory and forget about it for a couple of years. The problem here is not lack of upgradeability per se, but rather ridiculous pricing model for factory "upgrades".
You are right. The M series Macs are pretty good. However if you have SW that requires Intel CPU you are f.cked. A great custom Mac Mini would cost me £1600. Thats still a lot of money and only God knows how long the current M2 Pro series will be supported by Apple. About "PRO users" Pro is a hyped and overused term of average user. Apparently everybody thinks that they need pro HW because EVERYBODY makes videos and music :D I can imagine the 15 yo kids using their iPhone Pro Max to take pictures of their cats, their bfast or dinner, record videos and upload it to Instagram (I dont even have instagram) or TikTok. They really need that Pro HW :D I make stop motion animation on my Mac Pro 5.1. Its an old, 14 yo computer but it is still more than enough. I hope Apple makes the Mac mini look different for the M4/M4 Pro configurations, I would hope they at least change the color to Space black.
Current design is getting long in the tooth, I agree. A simple color change would suffice. Also easier when you're supporting these things in the field, if they don't all look the same.

I think Apple should focus on just having the Studio and come out with a new iMac Pro, that way there would be an all in one with a really good high res built in display or the Studio, for users who want to choose their own accessories, giving Pro buyers two really good choices that are different enough.
