    The old Mac Pro's were awesome machines.
    I bought one a few years ago and used it as a media server for Plex, whilst also being a TimeMachine drive for two other networked Macs, and... I also used it to backup my iPhone.
    It was power hungry and got very warm. I maxed it out with RAM and storage drives - totalling many TB's. I sold it about five years ago, sadly, a courier totally f**ked it up by throwing it down some stairs and then claimed they didn't insure Apple computers - despite paying for EXTRA insurance... anyway...
    I replaced it with an i5 Mac Mini, which lasted a few years. The downside was the Mini didn't have the internal storage capacity and performance speed I needed - even after adding a SSD and more RAM. It was okay for basic stuff. Now, I'm on a M1 Max Studio, which is very quick - two years on, it still runs as fast as my two year old, i9, (64GB Ram with SSDs) Windows, (work bought) video editing rig. The graphics cards are holding Macs back - even the new M4's - not forgetting the lack of memory and SSD expansion - come on Apple!!
    How much to upgrade the RAM and SSD?!?

      @@jonescd76 Hey, man, thanks so much for sharing your experience with these machines! Super interesting. As far as upgradability goes, yeah, it’s hard to beat the old Mac Pros. @@NeboscloneStudio Hey, thanks for the tip, I’ll try it out next time I encounter this level of caked on thermal paste. I didn’t want to use thinner or acetone because I was afraid of damaging the dye or something. Thanks again for the feedback! 🤘

    • @NeboscloneStudio
      @NeboscloneStudio 3 місяці тому +5

      @@schvabek You're welcome! Yes thinner would dissolve a lot of plastics and dyes, so use it carefuly only with a q-tip on the metal parts. It will erase lettering if they are screen painted on. Also the sanding thing here is a little bit of a no no, because that makes the plane of the cooler uneven to the plane of the processor. What cools the processor is not so much the paste but the closeness of the cooler to the top of the processor. The paste only helps to fill that micron space inbetwen. If the surface is scrached that means uneven heat dissipation. :)

      Kerosene is another good hydrocarbon solvent to try on things that alcohol will not dissolve. Unlike WD-40, it is 100% volatile so it doesn't leave a grease film. It's also extremely flammable and mildly neurotoxic, so use it sparingly.

      Hey, thanks for your feedback! I’ve heard a lot about M class Mac Pro machines (and monitors), but I doubt I’ll be able to afford anything in that price range. The current MB pro serves me well, even if it is a couple years old at this point. But, having used Mac for over 20 years at this point, I can tell you the next machine is going to be a Mac as well.

    Could i get a mac like this, then trow in some "modern" hardware like the best GPU it can takes , max ram that it can handle so probably around 64gb , the and best CPU the socket can handle, then install windows 11 . Would it be use able for things like modern gaming , 3D modeling software like inventor/Fusion 360? Running 3 monitors in 2K resolution.
    I just like how they look.

    • @schvabek
      @schvabek  Місяць тому

      @@Freddy-qy4zj Well, the limiting factor is going to be the MOBO and the architecture itself. I think it maxes out at 32 gigs of RAM (DDR2 btw) and pretty outdated Intel Xeons. Not sure about the GPU, but this was before they had their falling out with Nvidia, so you could put a more powerful card in there. But if you wanted to daily drive this thing, you could just replace all the internals with modern parts, which is what many people have done, especially for hackintosh projects, if you’re into that. But at that point it stops being a Mac Pro and I wouldn’t want to do that to this working model.

    why no vacuuming of dust? brushing would just spread the dust

    • @schvabek

      @@lachlanlau Hey, thanks for commenting! If I was outside, I would’ve hit this thing with compressed air, but since this thing is heavy as crap, I just dusted it off indoors. Vacuuming actually doesn’t work as well, and you can easily damage something. Using a brush dipped in alcohol actually works better and doesn’t spread the dust as much.

    Copperpaste is not optimal, i have the 2.1 (witch isnt a powermac) its built like a server, mine boots from an nvme, has windows 10 and have a 6gb graphics card.
    The bios is 32 bit so you have to build your own OS with a 32 bit bios and 64 bit OS, there are guides on how to do it.

      @@hatehead1983 Hey, thanks for commenting! Your setup sounds awesome.
      This thing uses copper pipes and a copper heat sink in combination with aluminium fins, and I’ve read that you should use copper thermal paste for that.
      I don’t need this thing to run Windows 10 or have a 64 bit OS, although it is capable of running it.
