    I think one of the parts of the raw diet that nearly everyone gets wrong is the organ meats! Well today, I want to fix that because organs are one of the most important parts of the raw diet - and getting them wrong could set your dog up for nutrient deficiencies and unhappy organs.
    Now a lot of people think that an organ meat is limited to secreting organs. This isn't true and it will limit the nutritional potential of your dog's raw diet. Technically, muscle is an organ. Bone is an organ - even blood is an organ. So it's not a good idea to assume that if something doesn't excrete, it's not an organ. So let's forget whether organs secrete or not.
    Together, the organs would make up about 1/4 of the animal if we don't count the skin, bones and meat. So most animals are about 20-25% organ meat by weight. This is what Mother Nature made for your dog to eat. So why is it a problem that most of us feed just 5-10% organ meat?
    First, organs are Mother Nature's multivitamins. Pretty much across the board, the organs are much more nutrient dense than muscle meat. Now liver is richer in most nutrients than most organs so it needs to be in your dog's diet. But I also want you to see that liver from beef and chicken are different - as is heart. In fact, each organ is unique … and the same organs from different food animals are unique too.
    So that means 2 things: First, you should feed a wide range of organ meats because they all carry different amounts of nutrients. And second, you shouldn't limit your organ meats to just one animal. For example, if you only feed liver from beef, your dog will get too much copper in his diet. And if you only feed beef heart, you might be missing folate. But I want to give you one more important reason to feed as many organ meats as you can, and not just liver and heart. Here's the nutritional composition of brain … and you can see it contains a good amount of an important omega-3 fat called DHA. Almost as much as fish does. It also contains a ton of folate. Now both DHA and folate have two important jobs - building healthy nervous tissue. So it's no surprise that the brain contains a lot of folate and and DHA because it needs these nutrients to work well. Here's another example … if your dog has a poorly functioning pancreas, it won't produce all of the enzymes he needs. But a healthy pancreas will have a ton of enzymes and your vet will probably tell you to feed pancreas. So every organ doesn't just contain a super serving of vitamins and minerals … it also contains important nutrients to keep your dog's corresponding organ healthy. And if you're not feeding your dog all of these small organs, then he's missing out because he might not get the nutrients he needs to keep his organs healthy.
    Liver is probably the most nutritious organ you can feed your dog and it definitely belongs in your dog's diet. Pound for pound, liver outperforms most organs when it comes to vitamin and mineral content. So 5% to 10% of your dog's diet can and should be liver. But don't stop at the liver and don't stop at 10% … There are a whole lot of other organs you can and should pursue, like heart, lung, spleen, kidney, brain, eyes, pancreas and more. Individually, they should only be about 1% of your dog's diet … but the more you find, the higher the percentage of organ meats should be. So if you go to your local slaughterhouse and you can find, let's say 6 of these organs like heart and kidney, then add them each as 1% above and beyond your 5-10% liver. And If you can't get them from the slaughterhouse, buy them as freeze-dried treats or buy freeze-dried organ supplements. Seek out as many organs as you can find and make them a regular part of our dog's raw diet - it will be more complete, more nutritious and it will do a great job of insuring all of his organs against disease. If you have a question about organ meats or raw feeding your dog in general, just leave a comment below and I'm happy to help you out. I love that you mentioned freeze dried organs, but I'm a little confused on the appropriate amount to feed can you give some advice on this? I'm guessing it has to be a different amount by weight than fresh because all the moisture is removed. Thank you.

    My silver lab is 3.9 years old. Started having seizures in late December 2023. Since then about seizure every 1.5 months. As of April its been almost a month since his last episode. He's been on mct oil daily. The oil has helped lessen his seizure length. Started late March giving him beef liver. Being busy, have't been consistent. Purchased 2 packs frozen. Last batch boiled for 5 minutes and froze. Gave him small pieces 3xs a week. Should it be raw, or boiled? He's 85 pounds. Vet wanted his weight down. He was 92 pounds. He has nice trim look now. Feed him the science diet large breed adult 1-5 lamb meal and brown rice recipe. As all pet parents, want him to have loooonnnng life.

    Im new to feeding raw diet. I have started with the organ meats. How do you feed this to your dogs. Is it totally raw or do you cook it at all. I feel if it’s cooked it loses some of the nutrition. Do you add other things to the food such as fruits and veggies and if so do you grind them and mix with the raw meat? Also what amount do you feed per feeding? Thanks in advance for any help.

      This is a raw recipe, raw meals can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Cooked meals can be stored in the fridge for up to 4-5 days. Both raw and cooked recipes can be frozen for up to 6-8 months! Hope this helps😀

  • @elizabethjohnson9428

    Dana, If my dog is allergic to beef (and chicken), is it correct to assume he would be reactive to beef liver, heart etc?
    I have alot of beef organs but am no longer feeding him beef and would love to substitute the existing beef organs if I can as the other organs of the meats he can eat such as turkey, duck, venison and pork can be challenging to find. Look forward to your answer! Thank you for all your great info!

    • @DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM
      @DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM  2 роки тому

      In general, he would likely react to beef. With that said, this is just a messed up gut and your job is to clean up the gut health so your dog can eat any food you throw at him. This is a sign of gut dysfunction, which means immune dysfunction, so it's something I would really work hard on. Lamb and goat pluck are pretty easy to get, as are pork organs if you find a local farmer or slaughterhouse.

      @@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM Thanks for the response. Wilbur is a 8yo lab rescue I have had for 1 year who came nearly hairless, full of severe pruritis and highly stressed out. I have spent the last year cleaning up his gut, deep seated yeast infection, vaccinosis, and alternating both detox and support for his organ systems. I have used and rotated and continually use a number of your gut products (protect, digest, colostrum and more) as well as changing diet to raw food, all local grass fed, raw meaty bones or your Better Bones and organ meat. We did a hair analysis test from Galcier Peak Holistics and so he is off any potential allergens or hot foods. We did a Dr. Jean Dodd thyroid panel - normal.
      I am currently eliminating vension and elk. I live on Whidbey Island in WA and it is often tricky to get organ meat other than beef and chicken here - both of which he is allergic to - same from our WA BARF co-op. I have done therapy and nutritional counseling on horses and dogs for 30 years and Wilbur is my toughest case! I am quite certain he is a good teacher for me however :0)) We are visiting with a dermatologist late December and although he is 75% better we still have bumps and crusties and itching if he eats one blade of grass. Any further suggestions would be helpful!

    • @DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM
      @DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM  2 роки тому +1

      @@elizabethjohnson9428 Have you considered doing a fecal transplant? That would be an ideal next step. The dermatologist will just recommend immune suppressing drugs like cytopoint or apoquel and they are linked to an increase in cancer and immune diseases. I would try the fecal transplant or at the very least, do a microbiome test like AnimalBiome. That's what I would do if this was my dog. You're 75% there with immune supporting treatments - it would be a shame to move to immune suppression now IMO.

      @@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM Thanks for the thoughts. I have ordered the AnimalBiome test and on board for a fecal transplant if needed and no worries - I have already said absolutely NO! to apoquel or any immune supressing drugs, poor guys system was such a mess when he came with a full load of vaccines and antibiotics and accessory drugs, science diet, and gnarly medicated baths on board. The rescue organization and vets were doing what they knew best but.....
      He is a really special guy and we will get him turned around! Thanks for the help!

      Glandular therapy would say that feeding lung supports lung health. Lung is also rich in iron and zinc.
