At 20:00, it's important to mention that there is another mark to the left of the TDC mark that is the tension mark. 1 5/6 turns is stopping at EXACTLY that mark after ONE full rotation. Tighten the tensioner bolt to lock the tension, then do 2 1/6 turns (ending at TDC) and everything should line up back up again provided the timing was set properly. Also make sure your car is in neutral while doing this lol
I already done my timing belt water pump and hoses over a year ago, I’ve seen soo many videos of people doing it, but this is by far one of the best! Soo fun watching your Videos man!
Considering how popular Miatas are now, you should definitely have more subscribers than you do. With how well organized your videos are, you deserve at least 1M.
Also, i JUST ordered stuff to redo my cam seals. It'll be the first ever time I do anything engine maintenance (outside oil changes lol) This video is a god send
Just did my timing belt, water pump, hoses, and seals following this video as my guide on my 97 NA8. Runs and sounds great. Couldn't have done it without this video. Thanks so much!
"there's 6 places you use RTV... blah bla blah ...cam caps" *thinks back...* Holy shit, thanks Miata dad!!! I've had a very slight on and off oil weep for 2 years, I always assumed one of my brand new front cam seals was bad and I was a little bummed about it. I never used any RTV up there. You da real MVP.
Mr. Petersen is a Miata Legend. I watched his and Eric's South Main Auto videos when I did my clutch. .. A few times. I wouldn't have done it without them. First clutch job and it went well. They most involved maintenance job I did before that was a brake job. They raise the value of the Miatas a lot.... Have one but want another one or two ... or more... Now I need more money.
This is great for people just getting into Miatas. I've replaced everything on your list overtime on my '91 out of necessity. It would have been so much easier if I had this video when I bought the car. Turbos, wheels and suspension are awesome, but maintenance always comes first if you want your car to work. Also, to anyone doing a timing belt job on a Miata, I HIGHLY recommend getting a beefy 1/2 drive impact (electric or pneumatic), and a 21 mm swivel impact socket. I had a 4ft cheater pipe with a helper locking the rear wheels and I could not get it off. The torque from the bar felt like it was going to knock the car off the jack stands. I jammed my 1/2 drive dewalt impact on there with a swivel and it busted it off in half a second. Just barely cleared the condenser. Worth every penny.
Just finished my timing belt and water pump job for the first time thanks to this video! It wasn't without turmoil though. The lower bolt of the water pump was loose by about half a turn and it was dripping very slowly behind the timing cover, down the crank nose, and off the oil pan when the car was running. I went back in and made sure all 4 bolts were tightened properly. After I put it all back together, my car cranked but just wasn't firing up...I put the trigger wheel on backwards. Great. Went back in again, flipped the trigger wheel, put it all back and it started right up. I let the car run for a bit and drove for a bit making some frequent stops to peek under the hood and thankfully saw no signs of leaking or coolant smell. Your channel has been invaluable and I've learned so much about wrenching just from doing this single job alone. I feel so much more equipped to work on my vehicles now. Thanks Greg!
I just watched this so I could take notes before diving in this weekend. I have over 130 bullet points, not including the shifter rebuild or the fuel filter because I've already done those. Thanks a bunch for this, I feel pretty confident to get it done.
I’ve been absolutely transfixed by your maintenance videos. The lack of music (or very subtle music) is a big bonus. Don’t even have a Miata yet, but once the snow starts melting up here in Canada I will be getting one. Coming off working on my Audi A5 these things look very DIY-friendly. Can’t wait to mod and enjoy 90s simplicity again
@@UnbrandedFab I have seen NB with rust for $2000 or Mint condition for $10,000 . Really fine content sir. I have been restoring cars for 30 plus years and just picked up an NB with "unknown" service history. I truly appreciate your editing and camera work on this job, not to mention the pace. It is informative and concise. These cars are oddly enjoyable to drive but are definitely a little challenging to work on due to tight clearances. Thank you for taking the time to post this well made guide and encouraging a thorough job. Cheers from NM. A rust free zone with expensive houses.
Wanted to thank you for this awesome video, my nb died and wouldnt start, waching this video made me realise the timing was out. Using this video I have now fixed it and have a running car again. Cheers
Grrrrrrrrrrreat Video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You mentioned changing the clutch. I told you before I'm a HUGE FAN of Centerforce Clutches. I had checked in with them stating their upping their game with the Miata Aftermarket. They stated to me that they were working on something, so I BEG YOU to check in with them as their clutches are second to NONE!!! 62yrs old and been to a lot of rodeo's. When I say they are second to NONE, You can take that to the BANK!!! Please check with them. Even if they don't have anything "new" their stuff will hold very well and the pedal feel is like BUTTER!!! Believe me, you will thank me later!
This video was a godsend! Thank you. Managed to change my timing and accessory belts, water pump, seals/gaskets. Between this and your clutch job video my Miata is ready for more fun!
It's poetic, Craig. I've used your videos to work on my NA countless times, and I watched this one while replacing the clock spring on my new to me MSM. And forgot to put the nut that holds the steering wheel back on. Twice. And be proud, I've spent an intake and downpipe worth of money on maintenance bits before going for power. I'm proud of me.
Just got an NA6 miata with the GF. You're gonna get at least a dozen views from me trying to rebuild it! A good ol' sunburst yellow with 170k miles. Thanks in advance for the help Papa Miata!
Hey bro, just watched it all the way from beginning to end. Took notes like it was lecture. Absolutely amazing video, immaculate detail. 10/10. Have a great day!
HOLY SHIT IM FINALLY DONE Spent 3 hours first day, 15 hours second day. I did all of the engine work and the fuel filter (I had already fixed my shift knob in the past). This has been by far the most technically challenging mechanical job I have done but I can tell it’s totally worth it. Thank you so much miata dad, couldn’t have done it without you Wanted to add that for crankshaft bolt and cam gear bolt, mine were solidly stuck (previous owner may have used loctite red) that even using over 150 ftlbs torque, I could not get them off. Ended up impacting them, worked like a charm. There was a debate online about whether or not you can impact the cam gears and an ASE mechanic said it should be fine fwiw
This winter I have my 99 up on stands for a suspension refresh (superpro bushings, koni str.t's, por 15 paint on the control arms, new sway bar end links). And I also have to weld in repair panels into the rusted front frame rails and have to remove the radiator to do this. So of course now is the best time to upgrade the factory radiator and hoses. So of course this also seems like the best time to replace the timing belt along with all the other parts you replaced on your car. I was unsure about tackling this on my own but watching you I think has given me the confidence to do the job. Thank you for such comprehensive guide. Cheers
Whenever I have to take the crank bolt off I use a breaker bar against the frame or ground with 0 slack and touch the starter. Used that method for several cars. Its like a built in impact driver.
I did it. I followed this video and did it all. I even did a vvt tuneup. I've never opened a valve cover before and I got the timing belt right and everything. Took me a month and five stitches but yeehaw. Ze car started instantly.
My 250k mile Miata is in tip-top shape and I already took care of all the major maintenance items. I don't need this video but I'm watching it bc love MiataDad vids
Piece of flat 1/4" x 1" steel from the hardware store and a drill and angle grinder and you can make your own tool like Flyin' Miata's for the crank bolt and it's pretty easy to get that bolt off. Much easier than using 5th gear.
Just finished replacing my timing belt, water pump, thermostat, etc etc following this video and everything went perfectly thanks to this video. Thanks a lot for the top quality content
Heads up if ur front seal is really stuck poke a hole and insert a self tap screw and pull put with tweezers.... careful with the critical surface area as this may get damaged if not careful 😅
Thanks Greg for this video! I've reached out to Treasure Coast Miata and ordered my kit. New to the channel, Instant fan Greg! You have some of the best Miata content on the Internet. Good work!
This will be my first time attempting too do this waterpump because my car is actually overheating a little, so I caught it early! So I’ll be watching this tomorrow when I start the process 😮💨 definitely have notes I took as well. Thank you again for this video it’ll help me a lot for tomorrow’s job!
So went ahead and did the change, problem now is it’s overheating again, I’m gonna try checking hoses or air locks in the system, but I installed it correctly step by step but now I feel like it’s a hose or a air pocket will be coming back to give an update 🫠
For the shifter rebuild: Anyone with a 6-speed, you dont have any fluid to suck out of the turret. and you can consider the turret a fill hole if youre replacing the fluid completely. Another tip: if your shifter rattles when its cold out, get some teflon tape (the stuff used for plumbing) and wrap the threads before putting the shift knob on.
I bought my NA about 8 months ago. I had no idea on how to work on cars. Not even an oil change. There was an oil leak by the CAS. Followed one of your videos and changed the o-ring. Unfortunately my dumbass had a harder time putting it back in and messed up timing. So now I had to set timing. Not a big deal, ordered a timing light from Amazon and again watched one of your videos on how to do it and decided to do it in an evening. Got my timing light, jumped the car into diagnostic mode, got everything set up, all good right? NO! There were no reference points/marks to align the timing marks. I thought, well there's no possible way that they just disappear right? Wellll, the previous owner replaced timing belt, water pump and all that good stuff and for some reason he thought that not putting back the lower timing covers is a good idea. It was sitting in a bag that I got with the car. So, my car is out of timing. No way to time it. Didn't have money to take it to a mechanic, no friends, and no garage. Not even tools. Decided to tackle this somehow by myself. I've already watched your "party miatas" videos countless times even before I bought the car. Watched it several times more, went and bought a 50 piece tool box from Harbor Freight and took stuff apart piece by piece in the apartment driveway. I may have looked like a total clown, but damn it felt good after I put my timing covers back, set proper timing after working on it for 2 days. The only help I had was your videos. Since then, I've been fixing my own cars, parents and didn't have to pay for a mechanic since then. I have tools, I have youtube. That introduction and the instructions I had just motivated me even more. Since then, I've done countless jobs that would have costed several hundred dollars. Thank you so much Greg. You don't even know the amount of respect I have for you putting out videos like this.
Thanks for all the content, and especially for this video (and the old version). It saved me a ton of headage and research and was all 100 times entertaining while I watched it in the process. If you lay in the engine bay talking while I'm building the car, it feels good. Here is nobody with the same amount of passion for our little fun machines. Enjoy your rides and making good content! Yours.
Well actually I would like the vid twice if I could! You helped me loads with the previous timing vid too and I was able to pull it off but with this guide you helped me to do get some stuff I couldn’t last time like that tiny O ring under the manifold. Great help thanks again!
I’m sure you had the time of your life doing all this because I’ve recently did similar maintenance as you did... great video you went above and beyond with this useful content.
For the individual Miata owner, it makes sense. For a repair tutorial, introducing a variety of aftermarket options isn't very helpful to the actual jobs being completed, in my opinion. I usually end up taking my cars apart several extra times just to get the most complete and helpful video content out of it
@@TheCarPassionChannel For sure. Not everyone needs to know how to install turbos and nitrous. Great vid for those needing maintenance help, the timing trick part I could of have used a few weeks ago myself. All this info is all over the net but it’s nice to have it all in one place. 👍🏻
I just did most of the same work to my NA6 Miata using your previous video. Solid, if aged. Anyway, where is the link to the hose persuasion tool you mention ~6:00 mark?
Quick tip to add, if you want more life out of the the lower rubber tunnel shiftboot "thicken" the rubber area where the boot flexes by adding a coating of silicone about an 1/8 inch thick. By spreading the silicone, this more than doubles the thickness of the flex portion of the rubber boot. I'm going on 7 years without a boot change. I did only the typically area where it rips, and the rip moved to a thinner none coated area. It's best to coat the boot everywhere it flexes.
Big Miata Daddy!! Just made it across the whole process on my 02 VVT with the help of your great tutorials! Thank you so much for the effort of doing these great videos, kudos to you!!
I had to come back to this and rewatch...I'm tackling my own nb2 in the next couple of weeks. Needs to warm up a bit. Many thanks for the awesome vids. Love the new content.
Earlier this summer I bought a 99 green NB my first manual and first (owned) car soon to be project car. It was about 4 hours away from home and 30 mins into the drive back home my rear tire blow out locked up the rear then it over rev-ed the engine before I even knew what was going on. Thankfully I didn't crash and I got the spare and drove it home. Sadly after a few weeks It developed a spun bearing and the engine was cooked. So I bought a semi-built NA Miata engine off from the a guy a knew local car community, (I only used the Exintake mod and bottom end, which was decked for higher compression). After 2 weeks of running it, it developed a spun bearing because my dumb ass didnt check the oil pump and it was full of metal from the first bearing. Now i'm rebuilding a new motor, decked block (NA), NB pistons, Cometic headgasket 0.03, machined crank, ARP headstuds, Exintake mod, NB2 oil pump, ACL Race series bearings, Wiseco rings, Gates Timing belt, Innovative Engine mounts (60) and all new gaskets everywhere. The BP4W is stock other than the cam and gaskets including new OEM valve stem seals (No supertech). I still have not gotten it put back together as I keep getting mailed bad bearings. Im pretty sure at this point the car is cursed but Im not afraid of no ghost. Nothing some holy water cant fix, lol. Earlier this summer I had zero idea about anything with Miata engines or how to work on them and I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your passion and helping the community, keep up the great work man, ill be looking forwards for it.
Im gonna tackle this...The only difference is im using an adjustable trigger wheel from Eight Nine racing to get the 14 degree timing advance...Every bit helps!
Fred Flintstone never had a problem seeing the ground when driving his car !!! Am I the only person in the world that thinks Wilma is hot 🙈🙈🙈 NO really ,,, thanks Gregg for another great video 👍👍👍
Having watched this excellent tutorial, I now feel fully conversant with everything it takes to change a timing belt, and as a result... I think I'll pay my mechanic to do it. Just glad my original owner had theirs done at 60k by Mazda, even though the service schedule for the California NB says to do it at 100k. I'm at 106k now so getting close to time...
As far as I know this is not needed on the Miata because unlike some cars it does not have any valve that shuts off the flow of water to the heater core, it's always flowing. I know on my Z32 it did have that valve though, so every car is different.
The best video on this subject that I have found, and I have have watched so many. Thank you and keep up the great work. Thanks for the lead to TCM, they have some great parts and decent prices.
removing the radiator, and hitting the crank bolt with an impact (21 or 13/16th socket ) after locking out the cams and throwing it in reverse gear worked beautifully. The only way to remove crank bolt properly in my opinion... forget about all the breaker bar and hitting the key jazz.... nonsense.... lol
Why am I watching this I've done it 3 times already
samesies, yet i still watched the whole thing, i dunno why
Done it loads of times, but it's strangely calming watching Greg do it
Just did my first one, and I don't own a NB, yet here I am!

At 20:00, it's important to mention that there is another mark to the left of the TDC mark that is the tension mark. 1 5/6 turns is stopping at EXACTLY that mark after ONE full rotation.
Why you lyin
Just finished this job. I probably gave you like 20 views over the weekend hahaha.
Thanks for the help.
I always soak Up your videos... But there is just one tiny problem. In my driveway stands no miata (or MX-5).
But as always a perfect Video.
Also thanks for your previous timing belt video. Used it to change my NA belt last year. Very helpful.
Yours.
Thanks Greg , I will do shifter bushing kit over the winter ....no more grinding 3rd gear at TMP .....:-)
This is such a good vid! Well done Miata Dad, you have crushed it once more!
hands up who's watching w/o actually having the car, because this is such a great video??
I appreciate you 🙌
Done all of these multiple times and this is a good guide, nicely done. Weird feeling not seeing any modding or upgrading done with everything apart.
Added!
I watched this and your old video to do a timing belt job on my supercharged NB, thanks a ton. My miata would not be the same without you.
Big Miata Daddy!!
Just made it across the whole process on my 02 VVT with the help of your great tutorials!
Thank you so much for the effort of doing these great videos, kudos to you!!
nice one Craig Beters!
:DDDD
Bout to pick up my second Miata, 95 m edition, and this video was incredibly satisfying to watch. Had to finish the full video lol
This guy is killing it! Glad I learned about this channel.
Thank you! This video is a treasure for a new Miata owner!
ayeee Preg Geters is back!
Dude love the videos, you posted this vid dead ass 30min after I watched that old vid to do my timing belt
Excellent video instruction. New NA Miata owner so this video will come in handy for sure! Thank you!
Im gonna tackle this...The only difference is im using an adjustable trigger wheel from Eight Nine racing to get the 14 degree timing advance...Every bit helps!
I did my timing belt. And it work perfect thanks greg peters. greets from Rotterdam holland
Man the first time I did all of this it was hell and it sucked, but very rewarding at the same time. Thanks again as always Greg, you da man
Fred Flintstone never had a problem seeing the ground when driving his car !!!
Am I the only person in the world that thinks Wilma is hot 🙈🙈🙈
NO really ,,,
thanks Gregg for another great video 👍👍👍
Craig, please do a full BP4W VICS delete & port 💖
Having watched this excellent tutorial, I now feel fully conversant with everything it takes to change a timing belt, and as a result... I think I'll pay my mechanic to do it. Just glad my original owner had theirs done at 60k by Mazda, even though the service schedule for the California NB says to do it at 100k. I'm at 106k now so getting close to time...
How do you not have more subscribers this is very good information which is very digestible for new guys like me
Love the hose persuader! It reminds me of my exhaust hanger persuader. A tool I use only once in a blue moon but it saves a world of pain.
Dont forget to run your heater to get out any air bubbles!
As far as I know this is not needed on the Miata because unlike some cars it does not have any valve that shuts off the flow of water to the heater core, it's always flowing. I know on my Z32 it did have that valve though, so every car is different.
@@TheCarPassionChannel ahh. That makes sense!
Flyin miata for the win on the crank pulley. I'm excited to use the rest of the kit to put it all back together
The best video on this subject that I have found, and I have have watched so many. Thank you and keep up the great work. Thanks for the lead to TCM, they have some great parts and decent prices.
Awesome video!! I’ll just come over to your place with all my parts! 😂
removing the radiator, and hitting the crank bolt with an impact (21 or 13/16th socket ) after locking out the cams and throwing it in reverse gear worked beautifully. The only way to remove crank bolt properly in my opinion... forget about all the breaker bar and hitting the key jazz.... nonsense.... lol
Great video Craig
for so many miata enthusiasts this has a small amount of views anyways liked and subscribed
You’re a legend. Best how to out there.
Another video which has given me confidence to have ago. Keep on filming please.
