When Buddy made this comment he was about 80% correct, as there were very few guys who could touch him in terms of pure technique pretty much until the time he died.OTOH, I guess he never saw Tony Williams play. I really wish he'd lived a bit longer so he could see the monster technical geniuses in todays world of drumming who use matched grip.
wow pure genius right here lol, yeah mr rich of course you can't do the same on the snare w match grip cuz you've angled it away from you ya muppet. It doesn't matter which grip you use. Trad grip is a solution to a problem drummers don't have anymore.
He was a genius for sure but his way of playing and his taste in music wasnt the only way, but he believed it was. He tight-roped the thin line between being well informed and being arrogant. I think he lent towards the latter. It was his way or the highway.
WHY I DISAGREE WITH BUDDY. Buddy is still my favorite drummer, but what he says here is nonsense. A lot of great drummers plays/played with matched grip like John Bonham, Ian Paice, Jeff Porcaro, Bill Bruford, John Blackwell, Phil Collins, Bill Stewart etc. etc. etc. ... Don't they know how to play and move around the kit? Of course the do/did, so come on, Buddy and silly Papa Drums Stuff, you should know better.

that comment was silly and ignorant.
He played WITH Tony Williams at some awards show (Grammys?). It's on YT.
@@robotron17 all the more reason Buddy should've STFU up regarding the superiority of trad grip.
Buddy's most creative endeavor was....
THE BUS TAPES!
All while sitting like Quasimodo.... Best grip eva!!

"they hold the stick wrong" Buddy was an idiot quite often.
hm i wonder why he prefers the thing he's already comfortable and proficient with
Most drummers play matched grip as standard nowadays, especially in Rock

love the unintentional rim shot and his reaction at 1:22
Ian Paice of Deep Purple. A Hell of a Match Grip Drummer....THE BEST!
There is no wrong or right grip, at the end of the day it’s all about how you sound

Buddy Rich is the greatest drummer who ever lived on Earth.
No, Virgil or any new wanna be "Jazz" drummer will never surpass Morello or Buddy.
Traditional grip makes his left shoulder sag.
Not very ergonomic on the spine and scapula and rhomboid intercostal muscles.
What ever works best for you. Buddy was the best but he was also a big asshole.
Buddy could play any grip and make heads turn Still today no one comes close to buddy rich enough said
I guess you don't listen to any other music or understand what you hear
Yes he played matched grip off the charts especially in his early days, Hawaiian War Chant with Tommy Dorsey for example
This looks awful
