This video made me appreciate machine cleaning day at the ice cream store I work at. I’ll never take that for granted again. Getting ice cream all over myself and tearing the machines apart piece by piece after draining the ice cream out to clean and then replacing all the ice cream and separating all the pieces and then putting the machines back together is worth it after hearing this video.
I loved machine cleaning days when I worked in food. The juice and soda machines were my favorite but that was just due to the mechanics of it. All this did was show me even more how many people can't/don't read anything wherever they go. Those signs have been present since the drinks came out and trust me in person you can read them clearly. They ended up moving them behind the counters so only the employees can access them. ( I currently work at Panera). It truly shocks me that people can't use their brains. What do you think "CHARGED" means? It's not on there for a cute name. While I do wonder and think the amount in them is crazy and I'm unsure how they contain that much in the first place, nobody in general should be consuming that much of ANYTHING that's caffeinated. Point blank. She knew she had a heart condition, and she claimed to be "very, very vigilant" about what she consumed, but she couldn't read a plain as day sign that's literally at your eye level stating about the caffeine levels? The Panera one really isn't Panera's fault. The drink is the equivalent of an energy drink, and they give more warning about the caffeine contained in that drink than energy drinks do. With how popular caffeinated beverages are, I feel like a lot of people should know what a healthy intake is and if they have any heart conditions before choosing to consume these drinks.
This^ especially if you have sheet condition or are on meds. Plus the name “charged” clearly indicates it has a stimulant of some sort in it. I mean it depends. Because if they don’t say how much caffeine is in there, they could still get sued. It’s not enough to say a drink contains caffeine, they have to disclose the exact amount of caffeine in there. The fact you have to go on an app to see, isn’t good. It should be displayed on the menu especially if it’s a considerable amount.
I agree this woman knew she had a health condition. She was an adult and chose to order and drink this. This is why people act the way they do these days. They don't have any consequences and want everyone else held accountable for their actions. This is like those people who vape then cry after getting bubble lung. The catch was your health. Be cautious people. There's a reason they didn't list the caffeine amount right in front of people's faces. Panera knows that this is too much caffeine. They're trying to avoid the controversy without getting in legal trouble.

It's pure evil that they knowingly kept selling the drink with the same amount of cafeine instead of simply lowering the dose of cafeind so it can't be deadly anymore.
I don't think thats much of a case because: 1. They clearly could easily access the information on how much caffeine is there in that drink 2. It is written on cups that it has caffeine While it is a lot of caffeine, it still brings different effects to different people. Its really sad to hear, but at the same time if you are sensetive to caffeine you really should be either avoiding it or not drinking at all. This case is a good example on how misunderstanding can cause such a crucial passing...
customers definitely have a responsibility to themselves to check what they are putting into their body, but (and this is information i got from a food theory on this a couple of months back) the charged lemonades are (or at least were) placed right next to the normal lemonades with very very tiny small warnings of caffeine being in it. customers need to be responsible for themselves and their health but i think panera shouldve been wayyyy more transparent about this i'd watch the food theory video on this, it came before the death of the woman and he speculates that this could very well happen

Caffeine poisoning is no joke. In the early '90's, like many a stressed-out college student, I stayed up all night writing a paper and drinking cup after cup of coffee and caffeinated tea. The following morning while walking to class, I felt a sudden and intense pain in my chest...I thought I was having a heart attack! It turns out my lung had "mysteriously" collapsed. Caffeine naps are an adhd thing. It's a paradoxical thing.

@@carriioneater I'd argue that the label really isn't that small. Smaller than the logo of the drink of course but it's not like it's a fine print or anything. Besides I still feel for the most part that the victims should be held accountable (absolutely not the recent man, but the young woman from last year. Don't BLAME them but just take it into account)
Yes! hear hear!
I have adhd and caffeine in certain amounts causes a paradoxical effect where I will also fall asleep.
This panera drink can only exist in the US. In the EU you are not even allowed to produce a drink with so much cafeine. It's mind boggling to me that this country, that always acts so superior towards the rest of the world, still does very little to protect its citizens health. Health care sucks. Food is not regulated properly. That drink should have never been allowed at all!
In Australia there is no rule about the amount of caffeine per se. But we don't sell caffeinated drinks in buckets either.
Yoooo, I worked at a Wendy’s, that literally NEVER cleaned the frosty machine properly. One day maggots started falling out of where the ice cream comes out, the manager takes the stopper out of the top and flies started pouring out!!!!!! Soo disgusting!!! Makes me super wary of ever getting any sort of fast food ice cream…😩 And I love ice cream. Ugh!
You can get ice cream from anywhere. Cold stones, carvel, baskin robbins
Extra protein
🤮
That's just a lawsuit waiting to happen.
I’m super sensitive to caffeine and this would kill me!
then read the label!
skill issue
@@redvelvetisbetter.1377For fck sake, you shouldn't have to read the label before consuming a drink from a place like Panerai Bread! I mean, are you really thinking about anything you're saying? Give me a break!
@@dragonsky799 So you're telling me you walk around just consuming whatever is laid out Infront of you without reading what it is first?
They could be serving you maggots on a plate and you wouldn't care as long as it looked like the menu.
I remember when Food Theory covered this panera lemonade issue.
Glad to see the problem finally getting even more coverage, but that is one godawful way to kickstart the needed concern.
just imagine the lives that food theory saved
Mountain Dew Zero Sugar (regular sized bottle) has a little over 110 mg of caffeine in it (roughly 116 mg of caffeine), while Diet Mountain Dew and regular Mountain Dew are not that far apart with the amount of caffeine in them.
You’re in charge of the decisions you make.
*Charged* one might say... 🤣
Guess that wouldn't even be legal in Europe. Drinks here are only allowed to pack 32 mg caffeine per 100 ml and there has to be a warning label that warns about caffeine and how it's not recommended for children and pregnant people.
It’s sad people have died, that’s awful! But Panera literally does have the amount of caffeine right on the front. Yea it’s not as big as the flavor names, but why would it be? It’s large enough to read. When I went recently I was going to get one, read the amount of caffeine and got a regular lemonade instead (although I do like caffeine when I’m studying lol)
Was that warning there before the incident or after? Because this happened last year in September.
@@fey09 I’m not saying the warning, I’m saying under the flavor there was always the labeling since the beginning telling guests that the 20oz has 260mg of caffeine and the 30oz has 389mg. The warning they added separately at the bottom (gray sign) they added after the death :(
@@CakeNCoke4ever Oh okay, sorry I was a little confused. I never had the drinks myself since I'm allergic to any amount of caffeine, no matter how small, and I knew the drinks contained caffeine, just not how much. But it certainly seems strange that people didn't read the label when it was right in front of them.
@@fey09exactly that’s what I was saying
@@fey09 the label for caffeine content has always been there since they came out
I have a younger brother that would drink Red Bulls before bed at 12yrs old and I was shocked. Turns out he was diagnosed with ADHD and was forced to take Ritalin by his middle school and this medicine had increased his tolerance for caffeine. That may be the case for some people, but for the rest of us; this is an Energy Drink. Usually, if you drink a glass of wine, the alcohol will counteract the caffiene and minimize it's effect.
Its an energy drink lemonade i think these people are wild for not thinking about that
Moderation is a key but overconsumption is always blamed on brand rather on themselves.
"Sensitive to the stimulant" Lil B is lucky if I had consumed that & didn't know the caffeine was in it i would've labded in the hospital.
What Lil B experienced, nausea, shaking, wanting to cry, severe anxiety etc etc is worthy of a trip to the emergency room alone, for I V treatment.
That sh*t can stop your heart.
bit over dramatic
Wait but... all the dispensers had the caffeine amounts on their signs? How it that not clear enough? I swear in any other country that would be enough but are Americans unable to read what it right in front of them??
Is crazy that they are allowed to sell that ammount of caffeine when Redbulls and Monster have way less. Be careful you all, stay safe
a girl died from the caffinated lemonade and all i can think is man i want some of that lemonade
I drink a TON of coffee and feel fine. I had one of the charged lemonades with lunch when they were new. I felt like I was vibrating the rest of the afternoon. I hadn't even noticed that they had caffeine in them, but I felt so off. I went back and looked them up and that's when I realized. I've never gotten another one.
Same here!
That’s scary. I’m glad you’re ok ❤
Its a "cleaner" caffeine than coffee
i used to work at panera and i would constantly warn people about the charged lemonades esp when they were going up for refills
As a barista I find the amount of caffeine in that lemonade to be ridiculous
as a barista you should now that the drinks you make have the same amount of caffeine per ml as one of these.
@@candydandy2694know*
If Americans weren't drinking half gallon buckets, the problem wouldn't be so bad.
By the time the first girl died the lemonade had already been clearly marked in multiple places(You could see it in the pictures from the news broadcast about her death).. She had a serious heart condition most of her life and was completely responsible for what she put into her body, and for someone who supposedly was very careful about what she consumed, they you would expect that she would be double checking and reading all information written on the product. Its not the company's fault that she didn't read the signs. The second guy being mentally challenged is really sad, he may not have known any baetter.

Why would you buy something labeled as charged and not assume it was highly caffeinated
Thank you for this warning!! I can't even drink a can of coke after 3pm or I won't sleep at night! I wouldn't sleep for a week after a small charged lemonade! Will definitely avoid this beverage!!
But why are they even putting sooooo much caffine in it? That's what I wanna know. And is there an age limit? I would never expect that a cuup of lemonade would have THAT much caffine, this is just bizarre ..
Nobody is gonna point out all these people drinking 60-90oz of sugary beverage per sitting? That’s 82g-110g of sugar per sitting on top of the caffeine.
Imagine drinking 3 or 4 coffees in one sitting. Crazy
exactly! that would equal about, what, 30 oz of liquid right? How many ozs in one of these lemonades... oh yeh ... BuT CoZ iTS in OnE CUp Itz OnlY OnE DRiNk, RiGhT?! DUH! 🤦♀
So those charged lemonades are basically like the dozens of other energy drinks that exist on the market. Some of them contain a lot more cafeine and some people also died from drinking them... We know the risks associated with drinking to much of these for many many years now. People need to act like the adults they are and be responsible for what they consume, especially if the amount of cafeine is written right in front of their face!
I own a ice cream shop and HAVE NEVER BEEN SO thankful we are not lazy and serve our ice cream homemade and handscooped from frozen buckets. Our ice cream machine has to be cleaned with sanitizer and soap and water after making each batch and between flavors. Thank God no pipes no weird things just a spinner that comes out and a door that comes off. Ice cream scoops and tons of sanitizer and lysol everywhere
2 people have actually passed away after drinking the Charged Lemonade.
What scares me to need to close a restaurant only 2 people need to get sick from the same thing. The odds of that happening are so high.
Paneera should warn people about the level of caffeine, but it also kinda should make you think when there's "CHARGED" sign on the cup...
Sorry if I sound insensitive, but us folks with adhd sometimes use caffeine to help manage symptoms. As soon as I could talk, my parents would have me have a cup of coffee along with my breakfast. Then it was take my Ritalin. I was able to be on a lower dose of Ritalin as a child/teen due to my daily cup of coffee. Adhd symptoms can be reduced by caffeine due to overclocking the body's hyper mode, allowing adhd people to have a fighting chance at focus and sitting for a bit. I'm 30 now and use two enhanced caffeine coffees a day to manage my adhd symptoms. I now use lowest dose Ritalin as a prn or as needed. It doesn't hurt that I adore the taste of coffee and love to dream up new concoctions to make at home. Bless coffee ❤.
Tl dr: caffeine and adhd. A helping hand.
Still gotta monitor my caffeine intake as sometimes too much can lead to a moderate headache.
My heart certainly goes out to the family of the girl who passed away. But, at the same time, it’s called “CHARGED Lemonade!” What do these consumers think it’s charged with?!?!?! Duh
They put up signs warning people of the amounts of caffeine in the drinks. This was on the customers for not reading the labels.
At this point they should probably just stop selling the drink.
I was gonna say, 400mgs isn't really all that much unless you're sensitive to caffeine. Then she got to the part where she was drinking 4-5 of them a day. Why tf would you drink that many in a day?
Ikr I’m like ok 400 is about what’s in most Starbucks stuff I thought. Then she said she had more than 3. Bruh!
Are you kidding? 400 mg is 4 cups of coffee in one sitting, dude
@@raerohan4241 and? I consume that on a daily basis and have zero issues whatsoever. A lot of people don't.
Matpat actually predicted this a year ago he tried to warn us
I don't blame Panera for people not having self control.
You should blame them for not correctly labeling the contents of their drinks, indirectly causing the death of a girl that always checked
@@aidee4186 Correction. I don't blame them for the actions of people who decided "lets drink several large caffeine imbued beverages in one day!" Recommended is a maximum of 400mg daily.

It's literally called charged lemonade, and a ton of these people seem to think it doesn't have caffeine? Also, those signs are pretty big, if you can read words on a simple piece of paper or even on your phone, you can read those words on the sign
I'm not aware of a collapsed lung being a particular symptom of caffeine poisoning, but I knew it wasn't coincidental. I've since limited my caffeine intake, and haven't experienced any further issues, at least nothing related to caffeine poisoning. You young'uns be careful out there...your body's chemistry and health is nothing to f*** around with!
That's crazy. How do you think that occured?
@@bobbyray7558 Not a clue. I didn't know anything about caffeine poisoning back then, but I just had a gut feeling that it was pushing myself to stay up late combined with all the caffeine I drank that had done it. I regularly stayed up all night drinking coffee and writing papers and going to class the next day on no sleep, but that night I was particularly tired and struggling to stay awake, so I drank way more coffee/tea than I usually did. Years later I learned about caffeine poisoning, which appeared to confirm my intuition.
So I know this isn't scientific by any means, it's just my own personal experience, but I've since limited my caffeine intake. Too much caffeine also hypes up my anxiety, so I mostly avoid it these days just for that reason. I still love the taste of coffee, so I have about 3 cups daily, but it's decaf, with just a sprinkle of regular mixed in. I generally stick to herbal teas rather than black or green tea, and of course I love chocolate as much as anyone lol. So I'm pretty free with that, but I don't eat a lot of it. And I've never had a Red Bull or other energy drink, ever lol. Run away, run away! :D Hope that helps!
“The FDA is saddened to hear of the passing of a consumer.” *CONSUMER*… ok. First off. No. You are not. Secondly….consumer?!!!

There is no we bruh
If I saw a sign saying "caffeinated" I would assume it has as much caffeine as a Mountain Dew (55 mg) that I drink all the time. If it has 350 mg, they need to put much more in your face warnings than just saying "caffeinated".
that's on you then.

I have long QT syndrome like the girl who passed away, I had no idea those had caffeine and only didn’t drink them because I’m also diabetic.
you surely would have known they had caffeine in them if you had've been standing right in front of the machine with the giant label saying so, right?
In our country, it's illegal to sell a drink with over 100mg of caffeine in it. Also, we're told about listeria, and that's why to avoid several foods.
One cup of black coffee is enough for me. That much caffeine, in lemonade? That’s probably 25 times as much or something, I’d never drink it if I didn’t want an anxiety attack

This is so sad that Sarah passed away . I also have heart problems and irregular heart beats due to health issues I use to drink Starbucks all the time I love the craneo crunch Frappuccino and I remember during the fall time Starbucks came out with the pumpkin spice Frappuccino I use to get it all the time but this year I got it and I did drink it and as I was driving I felt my heart have even more irregular beats. When I got home I felt shaky and I told my mom I don’t feel good luckily nothing happened but I did make a choice to stop having Starbucks unfortunately but I rather stop drinking there then to not be on this earth now I just go there for water .

I was wondering when you were gonna make this video. So far, two people have died from the lemonade.
I consume 1600-2000mgs of caffeine a day (coffee, soda, tea, energy drinks, caffeine pills) and have been doing so for over a decade, and I am absolutely healthy.. and I sleep 8-12 hours every night. Caffeine is not a enemy unless you have a sensitivity. If you have a condition/sensitivity it's YOUR job to check what you're consuming, don't ruin it for everybody else who rely on caffeine to get them through the day.
Nothing is safe at this point
All the people giving reviews are exactly who I expect eat and drink here lol. Love you all.
