A lot of maker spaces and public libraries how tools like that for public use.
@@wd4005 wtf my public library barely has books
I love this concept, and the design is really fun!
As an audio geek, i did notice a few things.
- the tweeter appears to be pointing straight up, which is going to result in an unbalanced sound. Tweeters are typically put facing in the same direction, and as close as reasonably possible to the woofers to compensate.
- the "shrill" highs are a result of not using a crossover. Essentially, this divides up which frequencies are being played by each driver. If they are both doing the same frequencies ( no crossover) you end up with muddy lows and highs as a result.
- The passive radiators on the lg ( and most bluetooth speakers) result in tighter bass, but limits how low the bass can go. This is generally a smart move for small speakers, but you could have cool results going the port route.
I think with some work and using something like a used center channel speaker, you could destroy a bluetooth speaker for a lot less.
At any rate, awesome work. If you cleaned up the holes id buy a speaker with that design!
TBH I wanna see them refine this design until it becomes cheaper to manufacture each one, as well as beats the off-the-shelf speaker!
Also the LG has DSP, the DIY does not. Passive radiators need a lot of EQ and power limiting, otherwise the main driver will get damaged easily, or it just sounds really bad.
The toe out is cringe and the wood speaker grills are also cringe. Basically an anti wave guide.
The plastic flaps that cover half of the driver ;(
Even without a crossover this would probably sound better outside the box they made 😂
Also I felt like the tweeter was kinda useless, the DMA series already has good treble, he shoulda used passive radiators instead. Idk if he looked at the frequency response graph but whatever. It would have been significantly smaller too
@@AR15ORIGINAL I don't think that it would. Off-the-shelf speakers have the benefits of economies of scale, whereas a DIY/bespoke project like this is going to cost more for worse.
LMG would have to go full speaker company to even come close to something off the shelf.
As an engineer (not ME or Audio) this is actually one of my favorite type of videos that you do, I actually wish there was a more in-depth longer video maybe on a separate channel? That went into the details of how they solved different problems it would be very interesting.
An engineer, lol
@@herranton what's funny about his comment?
@@hydrolifetech7911 It's funny that he thinks that by adding the fact that he is an engineer, it will somehow add credibility to the comment. Most engineers, especially new ones, love to point out the fact they are engineers and are of the opinion that being an engineer is a profession that people look up to.
Which is pretty much the opposite of reality.
No one cares. I can diy shit better than most of my friends that are 'engineers'. I didn't need to go to school for four years to figure out how to fix shit. And half the time when I do fix something, I need to reconjigger it to work after some 'engineer' designed it until it was so complex it was destined to break.
Why is the comment funny?
Because engineers think they're special.
There are of course good engineers. But none of them start a UA-cam comment with, "As an engineer".
You asked. I elaborated.
@@hydrolifetech7911 as a scientist (super science and smart science and stuff) the term means absolutely nothing and the fact that he finds this project impressive probably means he hasn't seen much impressive engineering in his life
@@herranton There ist definitely some truth behind your words but I would recommend you to just don't care about it. Let them do whatever they want. If they feel proud pointing out that they are an egenieer than let them do so.
Sometimes they don't want to brag off. Mostly they just want to make clear that they know what they are talking about so people believe their comment/advice/etc.
I think you should not waste your energy elaborating some random internet comments. Instead why don't you build something or fix a problem as you mentioned that you are talented. Just spreading some positive vibes ;)
This is why you have acoustic engineers. Without a crossover it's no wonder that it sounds muddy. Still a cool project, didn't think you'd get it this far!

Wow, craftsmanship was way off the charts with this one! That was so much nicer than I expected it to be.
I bet if you applied the lessons learned to a second attempt, it would seriously kick ass.
2:00 costs such as labour costs and anything really associated with designing and manufacturing shouldn't be factored in. They have economies of scale, and usually products aren't developed from scratch entirely, especially with more refined companies, such as apple, saumsung, lg, etc. Also labour costs aren't easily as 'hourly' since the specialist in charge of that aspect of the product likely has other products they're working on, and if they understand crossover parts, notably seen with all automakers, then they aren't spending as much time as you'd think.
I'm sure we all have friends in the engineering and manufacturing sector, you can ask around and they'll validate that.
I saw it more as a "i could just work X amount of hours and get it"
But if you DIY something and want to know how much it costs in total, you really should value your own time too.
Otherwise it would be hard for you to decide if DIY is cheaper for you than use that time to earn money and then buy the product.
Like for an example if I would start doing that and let's say it would take me 5 hours to make it from start to finish that would be 90€ on top of material costs.
That part of the cost was more to show how worthwhile it is to go the DIY route if you want to save money.
@@Ziegeri Eh. I'm on the fence with this. I'm a strong advocate for DIY for things - I have my 800TB Roswell racks filled with HDDs from shucking external drives. I easily saved money from those overpriced 45Drive 'Storinators.' However, not every DIY project is about cost savings. I think Linus mentioned it himself in this, sometimes it's about the experience. If you were to say your time costs money, than you'd have to factor in everything you waste your time on. I would only say it's legitimate to factor in your time as a cost when you're planning on selling this aka this is a business venture. Also this would ba very hard thing to calculate - what is your time really worth? I can charge over $100 an hour for my tech services and that would be a reasonable charge, but if I (keyword is 'I') charged that for graphic design, no one would pay me because I don't have that skillset.
Also, if you go down the route of calculating costs than you need to also factor in alternative costs and things that can bring costs down. You can outsource your CAD work to India, you could outsource your manufacturing of a chasis to China, etc. When factoring in your time, it's imperative to also factor in everything else. BUT, at the end of the day, I still say that a DIY project such as this is 'timeless' - whether it takes me 1 hour or 10 hours, I'd still attempt it, even if the product is subpar (as was the case for the video).
Labour costs are also significantly more complicated than I even discussed.
@@SummerSausage1
Yeah I do get your point and I personally like doing DIY stuff. But in this case the "question" was if you could do it cheaper than what a off the shelf product would cost.
And in my opinion if you are solely going for best for as little money as possible, you should calculate the cost of your time. Since in most cases at least in here, your employer will allow you to work overtime and even pay you more than what your agreed hourly salary is, like I think the min is 50% more by the law. Ofc that depends entirely where you live and what kind of laws etc. that country has.
So IF I were to pursue the most cost effective product, I would consider if it would come cheaper by just taking few extra hours at work.
If you love to DIY, it is most likely a hobby where the cost is in a minor role, and just the building and designing is the important part, then I would not worry about what my time is worth.
Imagine being such an huge tech channel you can pull off sponsors like this
I got the PL5 when I bought my OLED tv and it's fun, handy little speaker to have around. Having an aux port is a must for me so it has all of the features I could want.
Great job guys!
This is just the beginning of LMG buying and absorbing LG.

Oh c'mon Linus, you're smart enough to know the difference between development costs and production costs... There's probably more than 60 hours worth of development for the XBOOM, and more than just one guy :P
WAY more than 60 hours
Yeah, but that difference only exists for mass producers, not for DIYers.
yeah and LG will probably sell millions

I wasn't sure if the /s was needed but I guess it was lool
It is kinda unfair to include man hours cost since LG brings down cost by mass production and large quantity parts orders. I think it should have been purely a parts cost comparison.
And producing said items in a 3rd world/2nd world country, paying less than 10$ an hour
But that's the point - LG can do that, while we can't. Our time has value, so we have to factor that in when we're considering DIY as an alternative. The only way DIY comes out on top here is by assigning a high value to what you learn in the process of making it, which would be an absolutely fair thing to do, but whether that matters and how much it's worth will vary from person to person.
yeah big agree
@@SirVer51 Our time does have value but doing something on someones own time is our competitive advantage. It is wrong to value all time spent equal to a set value. I work x hours a week, I get paid for x hours, anything I do outside that time is not equal in value. No one can work 24/7 so time spent doing things does not have equal value. This would contradict the value of making your own dinner, working on your own car or even building your own computer. Have you seen LTT include labor hours for every pc build guide ($1000 build) on the channel? No because the expectation is that you building it yourself on your own time does not contribute to cost. If you work for a company, you will opt for prebuilds because company time has a higher associated value. It would only make sense to include the man hours if the speaker build was for a company.
@@mattmers I disagree - your time has value even if you're not working. In fact, depending on your priorities, your off time has greater value than your work time, since it's of greater personal value to you. They just picked the minimum wage because they needed some sort of baseline - you could take it as quarter of that and it still wouldn't even be close in terms of cost. The PC build comparison doesn't really hold up IMO because of how much simpler it is - even for a relatively tech savvy crowd like this one, designing your own speaker from scratch will take far longer than building a PC, even if they haven't done it before. This is especially true when you don't have LMG's resources, with the workshop and 3D printers and such.
Now, like I said, if you view it as a personal leisure thing, then yeah, you don't have to consider your own time as part of it, but that only makes sense if doing this is something you would enjoy as much as having the speaker right from the start, which would be uncommon. And that's just to get to $130 vs $180 - the difference in sound quality, features and ease of use would easily make up that gap. You would have to either value the DIY experience enough for it to actually bring down the cost rather than just not affect it, or not care about any of those advantages.
P.S. Working on your own car also rarely makes sense from a time and money perspective, at least where I live, unless of course the above-mentioned caveats apply.
Super late (literally 4 years) but I saw that face Linus, that sheer amazement at what you've been able to build, and the team I'm sure you love has become. Despite any bad press, and ups and downs. Stuff like that to people that know what it is, someone just genuinely happy they and their team have become know you can't fake that look without being a decent person.
Being a one-person job, it's a fantastic delivery.

Add to that the time constraints with the design and construction, and the lack of resources that LG doesn't have, along with the development budget.
Speaker, especially small ones are really, really hard to do, if you do not put tons of time and engineering into them. As long as LG did a half decent job and considering the price they ask for they surely did, it is almost impossible to beat them without either needing a lot of time or a lot more money, preferably both.

Exactly, they don't buy 1 or 2 of any part, they buy several 1000s, their design teams cost is split between 1000s of units, manufacturing labor in China is way cheaper than Canada, and probably lots of other ways to save money.
@@LaughingOrange Lg makes their own battery from lg chem and also have great number of pcb designers on hand who will reduce the cost of design and formfactor with the pcb.

Now this is the way to do a sponsored video. I actually enjoyed this.
I'd actually use a different amp board, Linus. The capacitors are there can't be nearly enough to really support a well-defined bass.
So are you going to give a specific suggestion?
You got any cheap amp in mind?
@@Verpal well, I used something like this for my car after added some rasberry pi heatsinks www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-DC-12V-TDA7850-4X50W-Car-Audio-Power-Amplifier-Board-Module-BA3121-Denoiser/223682178366
Though that's a quad channel, there are some similar duel channel ones on eBay, too using the same family of amps.
The biggest downside though is that no dedicated amp boards have "built in" Bluetooth, so you'll have to get a figure up a separate solution for that. I use a raspberry pi in my setup, though you can build something using a teensy for something smaller and cheaper
@@ARitzCracker Hmm......this seems legit, I got piles of SBCs lying around, might well grab one and see what will happen.
Thanks for suggestion!
@@Verpal No worries! Though do note that the WiFi and Bluetooth on the pi share the same bandwidth and antenna, which means audio can stutter while the WiFi is on.
That was an absolutely fantastic video! Would really love a version 2.0. I mean for a first version the sound was already pretty good with a less "bass exclusive" sound compared to most portable speakers out there which I'm not too fond of.

Hey, I know this is an old video and you'll never see this but I just wanted to let you know that this inspired me to build my own Bluetooth speaker. I used an old center channel speaker and drilled a hole in the bottom for a subwoofer. I didn't bother making it portable but it's small and It sounds good enough. For $14 and a salvage subwoofer from a 1st Gen Amazon echo I'm pretty proud of it.

Your design looks incredible. Would definitely like to see the sound improved, but keep the design.
This is definitely the best sponsored video I've seen from LTT, gets across all of the selling points of the product while taking us on a little design journey wrapped up in a story and a fun DIY rabbit hole if viewers want to try something at home. Sells the PL7 far better than a "hey, here's what's great about this product" to such a techy audience.

This was fun to watch. On a serious note building a project is fun and rewarding even knowing a manufactured solution is cheaper and will likely sound better. Your project would sound much better after break-in. So there's that.
Couldn’t imagine a world where Linus would not play supernova everywhere
Do a collab with Hexibase, he's been working with something similar.
Was gonna post the same thing lmao, would be an amazing collaboration, maybe they should do an entirely 3D printed speaker...
I would assume he used a hexibase video as the inspiration for the 3d printed housing. The way they joined halves together is the same.

then you dropped a project like.

it got my juices flowing.
"How could we make this cheaper?"
I should think it would be obvious that it is as cheap as the product deserves. You seem to forget that there is more work put into the design than there is in the assembly, and since you're only designing it once with perhaps a few revisions in the future, given the unit price of 139.99, it would be very easy to make returns and you'd break even within hours probably... all things considered, of course, assuming the weather is good...
you can even work off other peoples projects and revisions from the opens source community and to every ones great surprise repairability without having to own an workshop.
DO PART 2!!! I really wanna see a second attempt, this idea "sounds" so interesting (pun intended). I hope you give it a second go. :)

Neat experiment! I'm curious where LG makes their speaker, and how much they pay their workers.
A worker on the assembly line could put together dozens of those per hour. All the engineering and design were done before hand and the parts were already manufactured by machines, and very likely most of the speaker was pre-assembled by machines as well.
Is not like the employees are sitting there designing, manufacturing, and assembling each speaker individually.
Kur Norock nobody said that.
LG make electronic modules in korea and assemble them in the trade area they retail. Their EU plants are in Poland and pay across the average income ranges (there's a minimum wage so that's not surprising) you'd have to find job listings to be exact though. They also assemble in America, they have a few plants in Tennessee for example, and of course china.
@@olpizl Given the context of the video, the implication in the OPs comment is that the people assembling LGs speakers are underpaid based on the fact that Linus calculated over $800 worth of labor costs in building his DIY speaker.
Maybe I am wrong, but that was a reasonable assumption to make.
When you think about it for a second, this is absolutely one of the best advertisements that LG could have ever asked for their product. Linus' team just demonstrated that buying their sponsor's product is the absolutely the way to go. Don't waste your time building your own DIY speakers, buy the LG Boom or whatever.

@@heavymetalmixer91 ah, cool
Interesting comment.
I have to say I don't like the direction where customer audio products go.
All is about the base and they absolutely forget the high tones....
I'm missing Cristal clears heights. Sometimes they are thinking making them louder would help but it's more about the sound resolution.
(Sorry I'm not a native speaker)
@@BlackyRay_Patrick When I said "professional audio" I meant audio production (recording studios and stuff like that).
The DIY speaker actually sounds more clearer whereas the LG just sacrifices clarity for bass.
A lot of products and sound systems don't know how to Mix or understand low cut. I've yelled at a few sounds guys up for levels and their lack of understanding on how base works. Soon as the walls shake it becomes inaudible. Base shouldn't make anything shake. It sounds like garbage. It should never sound like a bucket of water it should sound like a fist.
@ This is why all Hi-Fi systems should have a Graphic EQ. Audiophiles tend to hate them, yet spend thousands of dollars on things that essentially a Graphic EQ could fix for much cheaper and much easier.
I actually really like that design over the LG speaker. The wood looks super cool and that outer housing is a real good look
