I never expected to watch a 40min+ video featuring a bloke droning on about poor service at a luxury supercar dealership...... But, I was entranced....it was so brilliantly presented and calmly delivered without recourse to bad language or frustration, however obviously & perfectly justifiable. Well done sir. I tip my hat!
Went to a Porsche dealership when I was 16. They let me sit and play in all of them. Sales person handed me his card and said “kid, if you work hard someday you will come back and buy one of these.” 40 years later I did....only because I was treated so nicely! Shame on you McClaren.
Exactly the same happened to my Dad at BMW. He'd always wanted one - couldn't afford one. He was looking round a forecourt and dreaming when approached by a female sales assistant. He was totally upfront and said just that - he loved the cars but couldn't afford one. She grabbed a set of keys and my Dad got a half hour test drive. Same reasoning from the lady sales assistant. "One day Sir if you are in a position to do so - you may consider BMW for your next car" THAT is customer service.
I've had the same good treatment from Porsche in South Africa since I was young. They've let me sit in and even experience the cars and given me posters. They treat their fans as though they were already customers.
I've been treated extremely well by McLaren despite clearly not being a customer, in both Geneva Motor Show and Monaco dealer. Welcoming and informing people; long conversations with sellers. They took their time to talk with a passionate kid. McLarens are also the only supercar manufacturers that open their booths at International Motor Shows : Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari are customers only, and Porsches are like "yeah you can get into the Cayenne, Panamera and Boxter but you have to be invited to get close to the GT3". This whole thing shows that the brand isn't to blame, it is the local authority in charge. Other exemple, but my local Ferrari dealer always exposes incredible cars. Lately, a LaFerrari and a FXXK Evo have been on display. They welcome you, allow you to take pictures. A few months earlier, in the Monaco Ferrari dealer, you could barely get close to a V8 GTC4 Lusso without being looked at like a vendal...
Geez, when you buy a 70k cadillac, the dealers bring champagne, strawberries and cream to the closing. When you get your caddy serviced, they give you gourmet coffee, brioche and swiss chocolate. For 400 k, McLaren should be providing hookers.

I will stick with Porsche. I know of multiple mclaren owners who very quickly returned to Porsche when they realised what a pup they were. I worship the mclaren F1 and although the modern stuff looks epic it seems crap. Even a market leading supercar reseller said I was probably best to avoid mclaren. I would love to drive a mclaren but I think it’s better to rent one rather than own it! A Ferrari v12 is next on my bucket list but the Superfast will have to wait a little while!
Some years back I came into a little money, not a fortune by any means, but I decided I would at last buy the car of my dreams since childhood, an S Type Jaguar, and even then it would have to be second hand. I visited my local Jaguar dealership and they happened to have a two year old 3:0 litre S Type that had just come in as a trade in, it was absolutely immaculate. I took it for a test run and that was it, the car was everything I could have hoped for and more. The point is though that from the moment I pulled up at the dealership I was treated like royalty, I could not have been treated with more respect and courtesy then if I was buying a brand new top of the range car, and that is how cars should be sold, and how buyers should be treated.

The absolute unprofessionalism of MacLaren dealership is honestly baffling. I think making a ceremony for a customer, picking up his car is a bit cringe but that is maybe just me, but doing your best to make everything go smoothly and amicably goes without saying. My father bought a bloody Ford Kuga hybrid, not a cheap car but not nearly this expensive but the guys at Ford were very professional, helpful and on their own initiative threw in little things like carpets and equivalent of 200 pounds in free petrol as a gift. And car was spotless. His experience with his previous car, which was an Opel, was much worse (the sales person was snarky, unpleasant prick), so he was super happy. I would expect at least this from MacLaren, these small niceties which cost them almost nothing but go a long way to please the customer. If Ford can do that, they should be able to do that as well.
The fact that McLaren's are designed and built in England and can't even go in the rain says everything you need to know about the brand. It sounds like something you would hear from an Onion article.

@S F At least hard here in Europe. Also the v6 in the 760 had some common problems with valves I think, started knocking after a while. My dad had one when I was a kid that ran like it was straight from the factory though so this does not apply to every 760. I'm guessing that was probably sorted too once they started making the 960.
@S F In Sweden, when I say they are hard to find I mean compared to all other models of 2,7 and 9 series of Volvo's. Yeah, the V6 was a fail. The one my dad got his hands on was a needle in a haystack because it ran fine. I think he saw it still rolling a while ago, so more than a decade after he sold it. A miracle in it self, haha.

The BMW dealer where I serviced my 3 series when I was living in Pretoria should write a manual on achieving customer satisfaction… They rolled out an actual red carpet when you just had your car services with them. The staff familiarized themselves with the name of each car’s owner beforehand and everyone addressed you by title and surname from the moment you set foot out of your car to drop it off for a service. The dealer manager did the rounds and spoke with every customer personally in their lounge whilst we waited to finish the paperwork and had coffee made for us. They made me feel like I was buying an M8 competition when I just had my 320d serviced. I would travel from anywhere in the world to buy a car from them every time!
Your point on repeat business nails it. Unless McLaren improves their build quality and customer service, the business will become unsustainable due to a lack of repeat business and customer recommendations.
Which is the key to Ferrari’s success - most people once sucked in stick with the brand and residuals are excellent overall. Warranty, quality and aftercare dramatically improved in the last decade.

How can you still praise a car and it's engineers when it can't sit in the rain? Or the air conditioning system leaks, the panels don't line up, the rear panels are loose, the windscreen cracks etc etc? Customer service is obviously horrible, but I'd expect basic things like that to be normal with ANY new car, let alone a supercar. A lot more needs to be fixed than the dealers.
There is nothing to praise about a Mclaren. Garanteed your Hyundai would beat a Mclaren after 6 months because it will be able to drive down the road. Where as a Mclaren will be in a workshop collecting dust.
On the one hand, it's understandable that high performance vehicles are going to be more prone to issues because they are designed to such tight tolerances and built in small numbers. On the other hand, not being rain proof is insane.

Like why would you release the 720s in March stating its the "best road legal track car" and then months later release the Senna saying the exact same. Not only that. That's just the trouble though. You've already spent so much, the sunk cost fallacy takes over. Human psychology -- it's easier to say you'd walk away than to actually do it
My thoughts exactly - it's true of pretty much anything you buy or negotiate - walking away is the most powerful thing you can do. And, in this case, it would have been wholly justified.
Exactly and if I could afford one I would buy one. It's a bad dealership....and I would tell them to f-ck themselves or the British Version of it. 5 hour round trip in any country long.
I agree. When you're buying a car, and the dealer keeps pushing you to drive off in it and give back for repairs, is because you take delivery of the car technically by law when you drive off the lot and take ownership. Not when you sign the papers. There beds to be an actual exchange with intent shown and the last considers that to be the drive off. But I've you drive off the dealership no longer is incentivised to be in a rush for any repairs because they'll get their money from the bank by then. So within 3 days the money is sent to their Bank account and they're done and paid so why should they break their back fixing shit. But if you don't take delivery of the car they have no choice but to do what they said because the contract isn't actually sent to the bank (it it shouldn't be sent to the bank anyway even though some dealers go ahead and do it). You're available correct that I've would NEVER EVER drive off in a car from s dealership that has issues and is Told to "Come back later to get it fixed". Very very good one and I wish every single person who sees this video also sees your comment because s kit of people don't know that your statement is an absolute fact that could have them tons of money and time.
@Jimmy De'Souza Some countries have legislation where, if a car fails shortly after purchase and isn't repaired properly, or continues to have problems, the seller has to take it back and fully refund the purchaser. A 'lemon' being a common term for a dud. For example, here (NZ) there are two pieces of legislation that would apply. www.consumer.org.nz/articles/car-buyers-rights
@Jimmy De'Souza It varies from state to stae, but all staes have on. As far as I understand it a vehicle has a "substantial defect", cover by the warranty that occurs 3 times in the first year or if the car is off the road for 30 days or more in the first year the MANUFACTURE, not the dealer, has to buy back the car. consumer.findlaw.com/lemon-law/how-the-new-car-lemon-law-can-help-you.html

This makes me kinda happy that I'm a poor peasant that shares a 2000 Honda Civic with his mother. That car, with 200,000 miles, is leagues more reliable than these McLarens 😂😂
But if you would have a lot of Money, you could also drive a Hona Civic. Beside that, it is no Secret that a Honda is in every way a better Car than a Ferrari or a McLaren. Absolutely Dylan, I mean realistically how many customers can they really have in the pool? In turn how many have seen or been shown this. Also, it’d be one heck of a car salesman to earn mclaren money. Extreme sucking up required. Dear oh dear what a pickle.
@@koitorob Here's a bit of wisdom that you can take or lease. Are you ready? NEVER attempt to count SOMEONE ELSE'S MONEY. YOU don't know who has what. And, NO, it's not a McLaren, but it is a $90k sale that they missed out on
The problem is: McLaren can't be too picky about who they allow to sell their vehicles since there probably isn't that many car dealer "people" who are aching to be a McLaren dealer. You have to have really REALLY deep pockets to operate a car dealer in the first place and to be a niche market like a McLaren, even deeper still. I was in the trade show business and did a lot of work with Jaguar Canada. In addition to their exhibits, we also had the mold for the leaper (the big chrome cat that stood on top of their pilons and on the facade). We got a call one day to show up at a Jaguar Dealer with a genie lift in order to remove the leapers. Seems Jaguar had enough of the BS dealer and had revoked their dealership licence and were removing all traces of their Jaguar brand from the property.

@@sunsetrider45 The problem is that luxury or super cars are also much more expensive to repair, insure, and maintain. If you can barely afford it, it's much easier for said costs to get out of hand with something like a mclaren than a ford focus.

Mclaren Manchester gets good reviews, at the end of the day this is just one persons opinion and a lot of it sounds very strange and also one sided, like the salesman trying to have a fight. If you look at the Google and Facebook reviews for Mclaren Manchester you'll see a lot of the negative reviews (there are not many) are saying "I would never come here *copy and paste link to THIS video" so most of them haven't been and are resting everything on this single video.
HarrierJint it only takes, and it ‘should’ only take, one bad customer experience to bring the whole operation down. Those that post reviews off the back of this video are doing the world a service. This isn’t like an upholstery error on a cheap DFS sofa, this is hundreds of thousands of pounds per customer they are dealing with and therefore, one strike and you are out.
I got a free non-alcoholic beer and some new car matts when I bought my peugeot and its never broken down or developed any faults in 4 years Apparently I was basically treated like royalty in comparison lol...
This partially explains why they've depreciated so badly. These days you can buy a used 650s with relatively low miles for around $120K here in the US -- about half its original value. It's tempting but then I see videos like this one and I'd hate to have to deal a fragile car, an expensive warranty, and shitty customer service.
I can't think of a better analogy. A Large, well known company that screws over their fan base to rush a product that isn't finished and have the audacity to refuse to fix the problem and blame the customer.

I'm an engineer with 30 years of experience in design and manufacturing facilities. I can tell you with 100% confidence that a lot of what JayEmm described are design faults. These McLarens are what any manufacturing industry would classify as late-stage prototypes, not even close to manufacturing-release versions of a product.
It doesn't make sense that you can't leave it in the rain "for any period of time". So that would also mean you can't drive it in the rain (some owners wouldn't anyway) because you'd probably have to stop at some point.
Half a million between the two cars,And to be treated the way these gentlemen have been treated is beyond disgraceful,McLaren really do need to look at how their dealerships are operating in every department,This is not just poor customer realations,It is zero customer realations!
Simply to play devils advocate just think of the position the McLaren dealer is put in by the factory. Firstly, if you were the dealership, you represent a performance and luxury brand vehicle that in this case costs $250,000, not an easy task. Secondly you are keenly aware that these vehicles are not built to the reliability standard of other cars at this price point (this is just my opinion). While 20 years ago almost all exotic cars had this level of pedantic nature, almost all of them have rectified the reliability issues except McLaren. Thirdly any dealership knows that if it caves on every warranty item that should be covered or paint chip that comes with delivery their business model would be in jeopardy. Add to that these are McLaren parts and labor costs, it puts the dealership in an awkward position Lastly it’s hilarious McLaren “home office” comes in as the good guy and saves the day for their inferior, overpriced and unreliable product that a “sales corporation” they contract out to, has to deal with on a daily basis. Just don’t buy a McLaren you won’t have these problems.
German brands are just as bad these days if not worse. Maybe 30 years ago they were good but not now. Plus their parts are stupidly expensive. That's now where they make the money, not on selling the cars. Well that and overpricing the German badge to Americans that don't know any better. If you really want reliable motoring buy a Toyota.
That was an appalling dealership experience. I cannot imagine many potential McLaren owners giving them their business. Bruce would have been appalled to have his name associated with such people.

Pleasure Roger. To be quite honest I lost the best part of a week of my life trying to persuade my friend and his father to KEEP their cars, and I was personally insulted and mocked by the dealer on several occasions. Not how I expected to be thanked.
I'm not in the position to consider a McLaren at the moment, however, as i have links/ties to Manchester, they would possibly have been my choice when the opportunity arrives. Like you Roger, my possible foray to McLaren Manchester has vanished. What awful PR this is, and very damaging. I completely understand what u r saying but as far as a performance aspect when comparing that to the price the Corvette is probably the best bang for your buck considering how much more money it is to get 1 of those exotic cars when the performance doesn't increase as much as the price does.

Bad management resulting poor workmorale. You would be surprized if you knew how many billions this costs on a single country. Not to mention worldwide. McLaren is only tip of the iceberg.
Well that means they aren’t going to be better than their rival engineers such as Porsche engineers. Those guys are constantly applying every data they acquire from their experiences in Le Mans and apply it into their road-going cars. There’s so many things the McLaren staff could have learned from their rivals but they don’t.

Just proves getting the cheapest deal doesn't always mean the best deal, as monied people they should know this and the guy helping them to buy the cars clearly was out of his depth and failed to advise them to simply walk away. The document was clearly fraudulent, the cars hadn't even been stored correctly, they weren't prepped, they were damaged, the deal was overtly aggressive and unhelpful. He should have told them to walk there and then, call the McLaren head office and tell them why they will be going to court if they don't get their money back in their account by the end of the following day and that the media and all his network would know why he didn't buy the car/s. Let people take the piss at any level and you'll get walke over, they got walked all over big time and their 'adviser', the video uploader let them down badly and mis advised them IMHO, several times over in fact.
I just watched an entire documentary on two customers experiences with automobiles that I cannot afford in the first place. I really like how he compared dealerships, and didn't completely bash the brand, but instead the dealership responsible. It hard to not be upset with the brand when you end up with all these problems, especially with a quarter of a million (I'm guessing pounds sterling) spent to own the cars. They did the dealership a favor when they purchased a vehicle that had been on the lot for six or more months, I'd have rolled out he red carpet for someone brave enough to do that, knowing good and well they were doing me a service by purchasing old stock.
Your comment, "McLaren driving experiences are superb but McLaren ownership is a nightmare!" is absolutely 100% on the button. The incredible proportion of owners suffering from faults due to quality control failures and standard of service from dealers is appalling! I'm cautiously optimistic that the new guy in charge of customer satisfaction MAY be able to turn things around but he has a monumental task ahead of him/her! McLaren Manchester very definitely deserve to go out of business, full stop! If Woking do not rapidly remove their franchise to eliminate this stain on the brand, I would be both shocked and very disappointed. You CANNOT run a successful business with employees/franchisees of this calibre. They should unquestionable get the boot - if only for McLaren's chances of survival! Thank you for doing this video as, like you I'm a great admirer of the cars themselves, and don't want to see the marque die because of the abysmal quality of service by individuals who couldn't even achieve the standards of service found in a run-down McDonalds restaurant!
I think it's a bit too easy to blame the dealers. The dealers aren't the root problem. The root problem, is the absolute crap quality of work McLaren delivers to them. I can understand where a dealer, if he gets shitloads of cars with quality issues, over time, will start to protect himself, otherwise dealers will simply go out of business because McLaren keeps delivering total crap cars to them. Keep in mind.. the service this dealer gave is terrible, and sure, this particular dealer simply deserves to go out of business. But the dealer is not the issue, McLaren is. No doubt, if the dealer just reairs everything, McLaren won't pick up the bill for the work done, but will blame the dealer.
Vehicle quality issues are a separate aspect from ownership experience at dealer, you could have a crappy car but really great people who are trying to fix that bad quality car. There's more than 2 categories in car owning experience if you slice it as you should.
@@pffyespff True, and that dealer is also crappy. As i said: if you hate the brand you sell, sell another brand. However, I CAN understand that a dealer at some point gets fed up with stuff, like panel gaps. I can then understand where the idea to have customers sign rediculous wavers comes from. But you are totally right.. the dealer in this story is an ass. I just wanted to point out that it's not the dealer who's the root cause of the problem, it's McLaren. Simple fact is; if those cars would have been the quality one might expect, that dealer wouldn't have even gotten the complaints they handled badly.
I think if you as a potential buyer would want a mclaren with perfect conditions.. You'd have to pour more mso stuff in it so that the company would pay more careful attention in the building process of your car..

THAT is customer service.

I visited my local Jaguar dealership and they happened to have a two year old 3:0 litre S Type that had just come in as a trade in, it was absolutely immaculate. I took it for a test run and that was it, the car was everything I could have hoped for and more.

@@koitorob Here's a bit of wisdom that you can take or lease. Are you ready?
NEVER attempt to count SOMEONE ELSE'S MONEY.
YOU don't know who has what. Furthermore, those in the business of SELLING things should also adhere to this simple premise. I bought my car and my truck in ANOTHER STATE, simply because I was not afforded the basic courtesy a potential customer should receive. And, NO, it's not a McLaren, but it is a $90k sale that they missed out on
@@bbigrocker1 absolutely agree
This is completely McLaren’s fault, they shouldn’t be letting these scumbags run their dealerships
i agree. There is no way this can be a fluke and that this can be the only complaint about this dealership
I guess better stick with Tesla

The problem is that luxury or super cars are also much more expensive to repair, insure, and maintain. If you can barely afford it, it's much easier for said costs to get out of hand with something like a mclaren than a ford focus.

4,5000 $
it's that number because the McLaren web bot broke down and is in the shop for another repair.
With the inability to park in rain, open a door, or design a simple latch, may I suggest that their engineering staff might be a bit lacking as well?
It doesn't make sense that you can't leave it in the rain "for any period of time". So that would also mean you can't drive it in the rain (some owners wouldn't anyway) because you'd probably have to stop at some point.
Half a million between the two cars,And to be treated the way these gentlemen have been treated is beyond disgraceful,McLaren really do need to look at how their dealerships are operating in every department,This is not just poor customer realations,It is zero customer realations!
Some would say it's a negative. I would expect special treatment if I bought a 100k car, much less a 250k one.
I would expect polite efficient service from any new car dealer, full stop, whatever the price of the car.
Add to that these are McLaren parts and labor costs, it puts the dealership in an awkward position
Lastly it’s hilarious McLaren “home office” comes in as the good guy and saves the day for their inferior, overpriced and unreliable product that a “sales corporation” they contract out to, has to deal with on a daily basis. Just don’t buy a McLaren you won’t have these problems.
Nooo,,,,,that’s pounds, in dollars = over $650,000. USD.

German brands are just as bad these days if not worse. Maybe 30 years ago they were good but not now. Plus their parts are stupidly expensive.
I wouldn’t sign that for a 15 year old Crown Victoria.
