James, you're not small, but you are weird and an oddball😄 And I admire that - that no attempt is made to chamfer the edges. Truly being out there and that takes a degree of courage. I'm going to guess you went away to school - is the public school equivalent of the Ferrari hand wave the Masonic handshake (neither my brother nor I in it, so probably not!) - and like some of my acquaintances probably flourished because of the quirks, not in spite of them. Nevertheless, no one gets it easy and affluent family or not, it appears to me that all you have, you've achieved by your own hard work - and talent. I enjoyed the philosophical musings about the opposite of schadenfreude - such a great (and useful!) word. Perhaps glückfreude or erfolgfreude? Either way, while I have similar recollections about the 90s, we know they're a bit rose tinted. Yes, children can be cruel - always were, always will - but that's because they don't think - and that's why when they see nice cars they have the reaction you described so picturesquely - and don't get in the trap of jealousy which can inform the grown up mind - especially here in Britain. I feel that your channel - as well as getting up close and personal with some fine - and unusual - machinery (I wanted to say you tried a Bitter, while on the German theme but I just remembered it was a Venturi that you mentioned at the tail end of another video, so that's next on the playlist!) - it also has a slightly exemplary, role model feel to it and I think in this era with almost everything, it seems, reduced to the lowest common denominator, that is important to have islands that you can point to and sat "that's been done properly". I heard ages ago the workers in America would look at the boss' Cadillac and say "I want one of those" whereas the British equivalent would mutter under their breath, seeing his boss in their Rolls Royce "you berk" - or alternative four letter equivalent. This clip is a future Æsop's Fable in how not to be chippy😄 I am sure I am not the only one to think it. Nicely done sir...
You deserve it. I remember your early content and you have completely figured out what you need to to keep us listening to you for 30 mins straight… you definitely deserve the Ferraris it’s not just our niceness. It’s proof you’re good at what you do
As an enthusiast, I believe that you can apply your Ferrari ownership experiences to almost any brand. By that, I mean if your car floats your boat, ticks the boxes, call it what you will - regardless of means - you will justify the expenditure just 'because'. Keep driving those beauties, James (and all you others out there with something interesting in the garage...), as it allows the rest of us that 'know' to enjoy them when we see them, too. Having said that, I'm off to nowhere in particular with far more horsepower than is really needed to get there. See you out and about, all!
Heh, well I'd agree for the most part, so long as the cost of maintaining the thing doesn't force you to live on ramen noodles. My "jam" is a bit different, I like Ferraris but they are a bit too much drama, and not enough tinkering, plus the prices of service on them are just a bit too much. I have a Celica 4x4 and a VW new beetle that is modified so far most mechanics just refuse to do anything except look at it. Neither are cheap to own, or handy as daily drivers, but I don't need them to be. Both do what I want them to, the VW is set up like a track car and has an exhaust that makes it sound almost like an older F1 car, it's on 18", Koni yellow set, custom stainless exhaust etc etc. It's great fun and a head turner, but it is a PITA every time something goes wrong since nothing almost is stock. The Celica is stock-ish, no real mods but parts availability is a nightmare as I'm trying to keep it stock. The VW is in a sense easier to own than the Celica because it's not original in the least and as time goes by it is less original. I can't bring it to any old garage though, since it's far too modified and I don't want to spend half a day explaining what's been done to it.
@@noth606 Nowt wrong with ramen noodles! Nowt wrong with a Celica GT4, either...always liked those, but they were way too expensive from new for my family-raising budget through the years. Nowadays, though, surely a keeper? Beetle obviously a labour of twisted love. 😉
@@chrisslater3174 The Celica technically is a '4x4 Turbo' in the paperwork, it's complete Japanese spec except it's left hand drive. It has a weird convoluted direct import story because the original buyer wanted the exact base car the competition one was built from, I'm the second owner of it. That's the reason for wanting to keep it as delivered. The Beetle is built on a US model 2.0L but as I said it's had so much swapped that I don't remember what is stock anymore, it has a bunch of various Golf GTI and aftermarket parts mixed, which is what mechanics hate, since there is no list of what is what from where, I used to track that but the paperwork got messed up moving house. But it's fairly safe to say something like 40% of it not beetle parts anymore, most bits under the hood including the block are from a Golf or aftermarket. I love the thing, but people have mixed reactions to it, girls in particular love it, some guys get it but most don't, the most common reaction from gearhead guys is "but WHY?? You could have started with a better car" etc. The beetle blows the doors off most cars while looking 'cute' which I think is funny enough to justify it.
Is owning (leasing these three) the vast majority of your outgoings? It seems extraordinary that UA-camrs can run what must be thousands of pounds a month in cars. Does UA-cam and all that goes with it at your stage pay that well?
@@Adultaffirmations Unsure who you're asking, but I've never leased anything, nor had a car loan, I bought the cars I had in cash. But I've never made UA-cam vids nor do I have any interest in doing that about cars. Owning any car is expensive, but it makes much less difference what car it is unless you have a fancy insurance with full coverage for everything, gas costs the same if you put it in a Fiat Panda as it does if you put it in a Ferrari. Owning a fancy car doesn't cost that much more than an average family car unless you break something on it.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said, “Old cars are expensive.” I think I spent more on my old Range Rovers than my Porsches. That’s just how it is, but I do miss them.
Depends on the old car. I've one only vehicle made this century - a 2015 Renault van - and it's far dearer to maintain and even though it is service every 10,000 KM rather than the recommended 30k - it's simply unreliable and so, For Sale. Contrast that with our 1964 Series Landrover which I have owned and belted mercilessly for 42 years - absolutely reliable and some years I've spent as little as just over $119 - for all maintenance, driven 365 days. To me the difference is most old cars were made to be owned and maintained wheras new ones are made to be sold and replaced once the lease period is up - forgettable, disposable - did I say For Sale?
Not all old cars are expensive. I was running a 40 year old VW Beetle as a university student and I was spending only a few hundred dollars a year on it. All work done by myself at home. Very easy to keep them running. Oil changes just cost a bottle of oil, they don't even have a filter. Just wash out the oil strainer screen in kerosene or petrol, you can reuse the strainer gasket a few times.
@@waveman1500 It's because it is a tub, 4 wheels, cheap mechanical brakes and a basic 4-pot engine. It doesn't have 3000 sensors, hydraulic or electric everything, 12 cylinders, 2 turbos etc etc. If Toyota made a car like that today it would probably do 1m miles with just engine oil changes lol.
I also waited many years for my first Porsche. Always wanted the 911 but once I realized the cost of purchasing one with modern stuff on it I couldn't bring myself to spend that sort of money. I now finally have a very special Boxster 718s. I don't know but cant imagine I would have any more fun in a 911......
@@jon65rv72 I’m confident you would not have more fun with a 911. I bought a 911, but only because my son could still fit in the rear seat. Once he’s too big for that I expect I’ll get a Cayman.
@@jon65rv72I think all Porsches with a little exception with the SUV's have a luster and panache. Enjoy what you got and if it seems impossible then let it go!
If it's a convertible I'd hope that would be the next regret I wish they made them in a hard top. Nobody in my generation that I know owns one but owns one or more expensive vehicles... the soft top kills it man fr
Thank you James; clearly an emotional time you are dealing with and I truly wish that your pain and suffering is short lived. Before you even bought your 550, we were discussing a few ideas together so I've been enjoying your journey since very early on. You have summised perfectly what the ownership of such special cars should be all about. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful cars and for being so open and honest about the ownership experience.
Wise words at the end my friend. I agree 100%. Everytime you seat in your car, everytime you meet new car friends and talk about your passion, it helps to go though the not so easy things in life. Thanks for your videos!
James, just wanted to let you know that his was one of the most interesting, enjoyable and emotional (well for me at least) car videos I have ever watched on youtube. Here's to your abundant talent in planning, writing, filming, presenting, narrating and editing these videos! If there is someone else helping you in the process, my hat is off to them as well. Please keep up the absolutely stellar job. Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
From the outside looking in, it seems a very frustrating experience to have a car that is often being repaired (costing me 5 figures for the pleasure) then, getting it back only for it to still have an issue that will take more time and expense to repair. I cant fault the idea of owning a ferrari but, to have to own 3 just to be able to have 1 available to drive.... and it still having a problem requires patience and a depth of pocket i just dont have.
@@sesto194I'm not sure that you'll get a 7 year warranty on a 360 or 430? You do get that on a new car, but that's 7 years of virtual neglect. Imho don't buy a car just out of its 7 year service/ warranty without a PPI
Jayemm has been advised, in the past, to use an indie specialist, but he seems to like the feeling of being special, which you get from a main dealer. I budgeted £ 3k per annum for maintenance of my 360. Cheaper than playing golf😊
@@geoffariesyea he’s wrong about the warranty. A new Ferrari will only cover the first 3 years with unlimited mileage and also cover the cost of regular maintenance for 7 years.
You have made a lightbulb go off for me with this video as I have never understood why I love cars so much and how to quantify why I love driving them to get the feedback from the car, letting it talk to you, getting it to dance in to a corner and squared away for corner exit is what makes my day in a car and when you talked about handling 💡 thank you!
This video got my like when Jay admitted his appreciation of "successful" people's Ferraris was perhaps materialistic... and then stood by it. It's important to recognise all aspects of yourself, whether good, bad or otherwise. And speak to them frankly.
As an owner of 4 Porsches and 1 Ferrari, I can tell you that I have at least 4x as many Ferrari maintenance problems/repairs as I do Porsche... So yes, it's about 16X more issue prone than the Porsches. Admittedly, it's an older one (F355) but I have an equivalent era Porsche (993) and it only needs oil/filter changes - nothing ever breaks on it. I don't mind the awful reliability so much because I knew what I was getting into but I would not want to have more than one...
I agree Rudy. I’ve owned 11 Porsches and they were all great to own and very few repairs, even my 997 Turbo. My R8 Spyder 6 speed manual was excellent as well. In 2 years all I did were oil changes. I’ve seriously considered purchasing a Ferrari or Aston Martin but I just can’t do it! Sometimes I hate being so practical!
@@jmarkr100 Well I also have an Aston - a 2010 V8 Vantage I purchased in 2011 and it also has been totally bulletproof - other than fluids and filters, I have had a total of 2 issues in 13 years - the door gas struts wore out and needed to be replaced (less than $100 and DIY repair) and the clock in the center dash stopped adjusting (a battery disconnect and reconnect fixed it). Old english cars were probably as bad as similar era Italians but modern Astons are great.
I know 100% I can’t afford a Ferrari because I can’t afford my 997 being honest, it gets what it needs but I can’t afford Anything else …well worth it though.
I am 64 and have never been married.....every significant other I've ever had called my vehicles my "girlfriends". I may be missing something but I don't see the problem.🤔
‘Looking down at the horsey, and thinking I’ve done alright’…….. That’s what it’s all about. Great video! 👍🏽 Hopefully our paths will cross when I’m out and about in mine 🚗👍🏽
Ferrari do overcharge for parts. I used to work on them in the late 90s . I remember being blown away that they wanted £6k for the chicken wire mesh for the back of an F40 let alone the £40k for a Perspex rear window. And that was 1997 prices! But this is what you expect as a customer so they can carry on. My old employer is long gone now so I don't mind saying I used to go to scrap yards to get bits of Fiats and Peugeots etc that we charged insurance company full Ferrari list price. Dodgy bastards!
Aliexpress might help. I was surprised when I found suspension parts, bodypanels, headlights, windshields and many other stuff for f12/ff and 458 models there at very reasonable prices. Not joking!
Annoys the hell out of me. I couldn't buy one unless there's aftermarket ways to get stuff like this. Even if I was totally minted I'd rather eat my own shit than pay them £40k for some perspex. Another funny one is the sat-nav in the circa 2010 cars. If you buy the one with a Ferrari badge on it, it's something like £6k. If you buy the one with a Jeep badge on it, it's about £800. And the unit is equal to a 13 year old mobile phone you could have bought at the time for £200, or £10 now.
Absolutely agree Ferraris are more than cars. It’s how they make you feel. As always eloquently and honestly presented with the funniest sponsored advert I’ve seen on UA-cam. Whatever’s going on keep your chin up James (as you do for us with every video). In return I promise to continue to watch and enjoy every one…
Really enjoyable video. I know nothing about ferrari's, never lusted after one, will never own one or drive one. But your passion for your ferraris comes across well.
Well said and nicely explained. I am currently saving for a F430 - although I have a standard life/salary. For me, I may never make it to ownership, but it is my personal goal and my own self-satisfaction. It is not to show off, but more to be something I can be proud of and enjoy for me.
I have wanted a 430 since they were released, then two years ago I managed to fulfil that ambition and bought one. Put simply; it has been everything I ever hoped and dreamed it would be. Expensive to maintain, sure, but that is more than offset by literally zero depreciation. The thousands a year I need to budget for servicing and maintenance are worth it for the sheer joy of owning and driving it; there is simply nothing I would rather have spent the money on. Keep saving.
I own an 08 F430 spider. Try your best to get a later model one. Get an 08 if you can. They shift a bit better. Mine is an absolute dream. I’ve had the opportunity to compare them and there is definitely a difference.
Lovely video. I agree it is a great feeling when someone smiles at you or looks exited because you are in you car. I had a Mitsubishi GTO Mk1 import with pop up headlights which I flashed at a young lad out with his Mum and his reaction was so worth all the time and effort I put into that car as he tugged his Mum’s hand and waved at me with a huge smile on his face. Keep making people happy with your channel.
Glad you enjoy your Ferraris! Not sure why you had to backhand Porsche owners to do so however. The vast majority of Porsche owners I've met, both through PCA and just encountering them at gas stations and parking lots have been friendly and almost always willing to have a chat about cars...theirs, mine and cars in general! As my Mom used to say, you don't have to blow out someone else's candles to make yours look brighter!
I drove 121,000 miles in my 308 QV GTS and 112,000 in my 550 and I never had a single breakdown in either. Expensive to service certainly, but reliability wise by far the two most reliable cars I have ever owned and no, if you think it was because I nursed them you are wrong, warmed them up gently then thrashed them everyday like I stole them, I don't think I ever drove the 550 once without hitting the rev limiter in 3rd overtaking. Between the 308 and the 550 I also did 11,000 miles in 11 months in a 355 but I was not impressed by the terrible steering and horribly over-servoed brakes so I upgraded to the 550. Fun fact I won a bet that I could carry a 10 foot ladder in the 550, I used one of those collapsable ones and it fitted on the parcel shelf, LOL!
@@jonathancollard3710 It's always interesting when I see Jay Leno's name being thrown around regarding owning a Ferrari and he does seem to a hold a grudge because of some rules specified to him by a local Ferrari dealership but then he goes on to praise Ford for the Ford GT application system where ownership of inferior Ford cars were taken into account!
To me, honesty is everything, so I appreciate your thoughts. And, no one sees what's behind the scenes, your life problems and sacrifices. Keep enjoying your cars, that's what YOU like. And we'll keep watching and liking your videos.
Thanks for hosting the RoadStr meet-up the other day James. It was great to chat with you and I really appreciated the chance to sit in the R8 Spyder that you brought along. My friend (the tall guy) was so upset that he could never own one due to the tiny interior size. All the best to you, hopefully, see you again at a future meet!
We get to live vicariously through you, great content, always respond to comments when you can too even to me on a previous video once too. Awesome stuff. I drive a little MR2 roadster, it's not quick or in its best life currently but the other day I spotted someone and we both had the roof down and thumbs up each other like yeah we are having fun in the boring weekday traffic. It's such a cool feeling and can only imagine how cool it is to see someone smile as you give a cheeky rev or let a kid look around inside a Ferrari and glad you are one who gets to do it. You genuinely have a wholesome passion and it shows Cars are made to be driven not hidden!
Never commented before but I know what its like running a channel and you sounded pretty emotional at the end. I love the videos, your stuff is great and keep up the good work. What ever it was that was getting you I hope its all worked out. Keep the videos coming mate.
A really excellent video James. I’m genuinely so happy for you and wish you every success moving forward. Your joy brings me joy, and I’m sure I speak for many others when I say that. Just keep doing what you’re doing and look after yourself.
I’ve had a 458 and a Huracan and I have to say that both were blow your mind special when you first get in to them and say “this is my car”! Both felt so special.
This was one of the coolest car videos I’ve ever watched, loved the realness and the breakdown of cost etc. But also loved the breakdown of what they’ve always meant to you and why despite the downsides they’re still worth it.
I’m sorry to hear your going through a rough patch James, keep looking ahead my friend and taking the little pleasures in life 😊, your enthusiasm for cars and your work really shows, you make not only people smile with the Ferrari sightings but thousands of subscribers with your videos 👍 keep it up my man!
I'm sorry too, but less time spending money and making more videos, and more time focused on living a lifestyle that helps you feel strong, balanced, relaxed and healthy. the only thing you have is your mental and physical health - cars are a triviality. (and i like cars)
A rough patch? The guy owns 3 ferraris ffs. A rough patch is not affording food or your mortgage doubling and having to sell your house at negative equity. Complaining about repairing one of your 3 supercars isn't too bad.
@@TheJPHarvey it’s been a couple months since I watched this video but regardless of what someone has, I believe it was more personal life. This takes nothing away from a situation you’ve described that’s really rough! But just because someone’s having a tough time with three Ferraris don’t believe that their talking financial. Clearly James is stating that by driving his Ferrari he’s for a moment or so in the enjoyment the car brings him, escaping the reality of life if you will, people do the same with running or sports or listening to music, whatever you do as your enjoyment, will always help you to find relive for other areas you maybe struggling in life and I get it.
My first experience of a Ferrari in person was as a 10/11 year-old seeing a guy filling up an F40 at a petrol station near to Silverstone racetrack. I had the chance to look closely at it and inside, I'll never forget it, and I had always wanted a Ferrari since. I liked many models, but much later on latched onto the 612 as my dream car when it was first announced, and though I have otherwise been very sensible up to middle-age, I am going to take a trip to my local Ferrari dealership soon. Thanks James.
I’ve watched many of your videos and have admittedly struggled a bit, not feeling that the real you comes across. Today, I got to see you, your humanity and clearly things behind the eyes that you are contending with, but which has led to wholesome connections with other car lovers. My love affair with the Ferrari brand is for all the reasons you discuss and I admire the spirit of this video over all others. Stay well.
Over the years I’ve come to realize that in the UK it’s much, much cheaper for scheduled services. Here in the states we pay $150-$250 per hour for labor, plus parts, which are often marked up by 100%. So here in the US, especially in California where a lot of Ferrari owners live, yeah we can easily pay $5-10k for a major service especially when you add in the “while you’re in there” items. I assume in the UK they do the servicing cheap as a loss leader, to gain the customers.
I’ve always loved Ferrari and the first time I drove one I could hardly breathe, when you see that badge on the steering wheel looking back at you. There’s nothing else like it. I can’t afford one though and have a boxster instead, an excellent car itself
@@Riguintantrix 981 Cayman GTS owner here. They are just fabulous cars, not that expensive to own (well compared to Ferrari at least) and very reliable. It's my second one and I will probably look for a 718 GTS 4.0 next (hoping it sounds as good as the 981)
@@MrJef06718 base owner here, with a GTS4.0 on order. Don't think they sound any better than yours as they have the particulate filters. They drive superb though. Was lucky enough to try a GTS 4.0 at the Porsche experience centre recently. It may not be as quick as Jay's Ferarris, but its still pretty brutal to me. Eminently practical though. A chasm of a front boot and a rear one too. Smallish and fairly nimble, and still able to fit my 6'4" frame in comfortably. Just hoping I don't regret swapping my base 718 for it, as I am rather attached to it, despite what Jay has said about them.
Great perspective and very similar to my experience as well (minus the repair bills as I've only been a Ferrari owner since December 2022). I've been a car guy my entire life thanks to my dad and have owned dozens of cars over the years from a variety of brands (currently own 7 cars, 6 of which are Dodge products) and while I truly enjoy all of the cars that I have, the Ferrari really stands out above them all, including over my 1996 Dodge Viper GTS Coupe. And it garners far more attention than any of my other cars as well. When people see you in a Ferrari or hear that you own a Ferrari, that changes their perception of you. I bought mine from Ferrari San Fransisco because I wanted to start developing a relationship with the brand, and so far have not been disappointed! I recently attended a dealer event for the unveiling of the Purosangue and will be attending another dealer event at one of our local race tracks in a couple of weeks. Great experiences I wouldn't be able to have if I hadn't bought a Ferrari, or not bought it from the dealer I did. And like you I have no intention of disappointing the child I was and will continue to drive my Ferrari and enjoy it to the fullest.
To each their own. I have a couple of XKEs that also are fairly expensive to keep running and parts are also getting pricey. This is why I bought a Lotus for a fun and dependable sports car. With the Toyota drivetrain, it is as dependable as a Toyota and starts every time. It has exotic looks and people stop and ask about it more than many other expensive cars, but cost to run can be dirt cheap - a bargain sports car that gives me almost all of the positives without the negatives and high ongoing costs.
If you suffer from Petrol head disease it will cost A fast ford these days is a small fortune . I find the best way is to buy nearly new whatever you want and expect to be ripped off. You want anything unusual your paying . But when you have the illness there is little you can do. Cheers good content
I liked the honesty of this one and having followed the channel from early on, I think it’s really cool that you’ve reached a point you can afford these cars and fulfil a dream. Yes, they’re expensive to run, no surprises there, but given what they actually cost to buy and that they should “generally” hold their money, it’s not so awful (not that I can afford it, so easy for me to say 😂). Keep driving them and enjoying them 👍 Sorry to hear you’ve got some negative “stuff” going on in the private life. Stay strong, these things will pass and ultimately, we get to learn from them (hopefully).
I applaud you enjoying your cars by driving them, rather than having a motor museum. I'm in my fifties and still enjoy the sight of a Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche. I wave at other MX5 drivers, partly in appreciation, partly for the fellowship. The world can be a stressful miserable place, and enjoying a nice drive is a great way to lift your spirits. I wish you the best in overcoming your adversities and to keep on making these enjoyable videos.
Thanks James for all these videos, it was as a result of an earlier video and saying about Ferrari financing options that lead me to get my first one, which was a 458 Italia, and now upgraded to a 488 Spider. The more you drive them the joy you get and put smiles on other people’s faces. I also agree the 488 is an improvement on the 458, having lived with both. They are both special in their own way. 👍
@@John_Wood_ it will all depend on deposit, interest and term, but always worth looking at and buying from a main dealer. They come with 2 year warranty reassures you about any issues that come up that isn’t maintenance and if within 7 years the servicing in the newer models is included
Sorry to hear life is serving you lemons James, hope things brighten soon. Good on you for carrying on with this, great little chat. I have never been a Ferrari person but you have me thinking, especially with the comparisons to other seemingly more sensible options which can hit your wallet pretty hard as well.
I think this is your best video ever, i must admit that i haven´t watched all of your videos yet, but still. Great camera work and great self conversation that we all have in our head. If you ever drive down to south of Portugal feel free to our home and a garage while enjoying the sun. Take care!

Thanks for the Outloud huge belly laughs I got from the commercial. Kudos! Loved what you did with that, you should stick with that approach. Thanks again for the laughs
I love many Ferrari's (definitely not all) and I'd love to own one one day without really having to worry about the costs. However, I do seriously wonder why, especially at their price point, it appears to be so hard to make them more reliable, while so many brands seem to do such a better job at it.
In most cases they are not driven enough to keep them running well. Secondly even basic maintenance is so expensive many owners skip or scrimp on maintenance which also causes problems not due to build quality.
People forget Ferrari is a small manufacturer, they don’t have huge R&D departments to test the durability of every single part also their R&D is more focused on performance and sometimes you have to sacrifice reliability to get that little extra performance.
Actually we have a word in french for the opposite of Schadenfreude : it is "compersion", being happy for somebody else's happiness. Sadly, we rarely use it in our own laguage. I think maybe because we are not educated in this way. But I totally agree on your point : seeing some exceptionnal cars on the road, even for a few second, is such a delight I coul thank their owners for having bought them, and for driving them ! So thank you for being one of them.
Another great video James, nice to see someone wearing their heart on their sleeve ❤ Hope things get better for you, you have a huge community on your side 😊 As for the Ferrari collection, enjoy every moment of it 👍
I would agree on the whole 'my first Ferrari' thing and I still smile like an idiot when I get in my F12. I find there is also a massive difference between the response of people in UK vs Europe to the F12 (no matter if I'm doing the speed limit, less or more). Both involve copious amounts of arm waving. In the UK they're telling you to slow down, in the EU they're asking you to speed up.
Just love this video of yours. And thank you for the inspiration. I will be getting my dream car of an Aston Martin, sometimes I think it’s not financially smart, but we only live once.
After years of dedicating my fleet to that company from Stuttgart, I have finally concluded that there is a larger world out there. Looked at getting a Ferrari but ended up with a Jaguar F-Type. I believe the same things you espouse. If the car speaks to you on a personal level, it's worth whatever you paid for it. If it doesn't, it's relegated to the role of appliance and you should focus on utilitarian reliability. Yes, Toyota Highlander in the driveway next to the Jag, I'm talking about you.
I have a 2023 F-Type and love it. More than meets my needs for GT/sports car. Then a 2023 F-Pace SVR as rainy day/daily driver. It's a sleeper and tons of fun. Urus killer at half the price.
I have a 2016 F-Type and so far it has been nice! I wouldn't say it's unreliable, quite the opposite. I have to pay the dealership tax though, not many options outside for maintenance.
Whatever challenges you are facing in the background hopefully it will all be resolved soon. Thank you for great honest video which I can relate to very much 🙏🏾
What a glorious Ferrari! ❤️😃 Thank you for sharing. 🙏🏼 My neighbour’s friend has a red Ferrari California and it makes me smile every time I see it. Enjoy! 🌈✌🏼

Hearing you say you’ve had a bad day and your cars have helped you get though it put a tear in my eye I’ve had a bad couple of years and my cayman had been parked up but this coming Friday I get to drive it for the first time in almost two years and I can almost feel how rewarding it will be. It always worth it to keep on fighting, even if it just to turn the keys of your car at the end of the week
Hey James…really enjoyed this…very honest and direct discussion, so few telll how it is. Great stuff! Hope you are okay on the whole, keep pushing forward. 😊
Lovely video, man. I'm in no shape to buy such a lovely car. I'm lusting madly over a high-mileage 348 TB, but maybe another time. In the meantime, I can't wipe the grin off my face when I hear you speak of the joy of driving and hear you winding through the gears. That joy is infectious. Thank you.
About Ferrari owners being happier than Porsche owners, I can sort of relate to that. Last week I took my Honda Civic Type R and three of my best mates to the Vosges mountains and we encountered a Ferrari at an intersection. The chap in the Ferrari was having a lovely drive himself and upon seeing us, he sent us a big smile and an appreciative nod. As if to say: "Lads, enjoy yourselves in your hot hatch. I know I'm having fun on these twisty road." Something you would never, not in a thousand years, not until hell freezes over, get from a Porsche driver.
Not true I am a Porsche 981 Boxster s owner and I appreciate all car enthusiasts and what they drive and acknowledge them. I have had a mazda mx5 a 2017 mustang gt. I now also have an f type v6s....I've ordered a nissan z as well so not a brand snob. I appreciate nice sporty cars.
You might from me. I drive a porsche. About 50 percent of other porsche drivers wave. And I also wave at Mazers and Astons, basically anything beutiful.
Very empathetic, dear JayEmm! You mentioned similar things before, it’s very much how I feel. Putting it into words, you multiply happiness: you are the reason why I have a more expensive insurance, that allows every driver above the age of 30, not just me. Smile on the face of others is beyond everything. Keep on being humble, grateful - and enjoying!
Great video. Congrats on you being able to live the dream. Coming from working on and maintaining German cars, there's something about those moments when everything is sorted and the car is 100%. Perfection.
Since 1985 I’ve had always the least costly Ferrari’s, so 3 308GT4’s, a 246 GT , a Mondial 3.4t and now a Mondial 3.2 QV Coupe. On each I’ve had the annual servicing & the 3 yearly cambelt renewals. I’ve always driven them wherever and when ever. They were all ones with evidence of regular use. I’ve not had big problems. I think using them is the key to reliability. My only disappointment was a little used low mileage one, but I sold it after fixing it. My latest is at 73,800 miles & using it a lot, it seems to getting more fun!
Love your refreshingly brutal honesty! It is also great to see you out and enjoying your Ferraris!! Wishing you well through the rough patch, my friend. Prancing horses to the rescue!
TVRs sound better! Ferrari use flat plane crankshafts which are more reliable and have less vibration but sound bad. My neighbour had a Griffith 500 which sounded glorious!
Can’t wait to hear how this goes!!! Edit 1: 15:21 I was initially in the Porsche is a better option camp until my 997.1 C2S grenaded from an IMS bearing failure. There’s inherent risk with any used sports car. Tires and fuel are equally expensive on ALL iterations of higher displacement/horsepower sports cars driven with zeal… no real way around it. This far, James is on point, no surprise really. Edit 2: 30:28 DRIVE THE HELL OUT OF ANY CAR YOU OWN!!! Yes, it’s art, but it’s usable art. I went from 44k to 123k miles from 2015-2019 in my 911. Had I kept that car, I could’ve sold it for more than I bought it for in 2020-2021. But I bought it for the experience of driving, not as an investment. Please keep driving and sharing James…. Please!!!!
You just proved the point why people prefer to buy a Porsche. You put 100k miles on your Porsche. 3 Ferrari owners fainted just imagining putting that kind of mileage on their cars. Porsche owners actually *daily* their cars.
@@piggeneral1275 Absolutely, many people buy a Porsche and that is their main car, I’ve never met anyone with a Ferrari who owns less than three cars. You make it sound like the measure of how much someone is a petrol head is based on the number of miles they drive a specific car. Fascinating how so many people who like Porsche feel the need to turn anything Ferrari related into a competition. Both marques make excellent cars and in my experience actual owners of a Porsche or Ferrari tend to appreciate each others purchases.
@@sultanoftippoo3857 Because maybe it's in the title, begging the comparison? Simply, Ferrari should be better, *especially* modern ones. Their buyers being ok with having their cars in the shop months at a time while making excuses for the car they can't drive, will never make sense to me. They are the brand's biggest enablers of it's products flimsiness.
@@piggeneral1275 I don’t know how many Ferrari or Porsche owners you know but I have three friends who own 911’s and although none have seen significant problems, all three have had warranty issues but they all love their cars. Conversely I don’t know anyone who owns a modern Ferrari but with a seven year warranty on all new cars, Ferrari seem to put their money where their mouth is and with a full order book and a stock price at a 10 year high, I do think the UA-cam myth of these cars being more unreliable than other high performance marques is utter crap. From personal experience my F355 is 28 years old and after three years of ownership it runs like a Swiss watch. Personally I don’t see a direct comparison between Porsche and Ferrari. Yes they both address the performance focussed car enthusiast but one tends to be a purchase decision made with the head and the other a decision made with the heart and with some people they decide to buy both.
Hi James Another great video James, thank you! After many years working with cars I have finally realised my dream and purchased my first a Ferrari, a Roma ( your review was partly responsible!). I have already done 3000 Miles in 10 weeks ( mostly in Europe) and it has been a real joy. I absolutely love it!! Take care
A very successful person once told me to simply "be happy" in life...after becoming modestly successful, rather than staring at my investments on a computer, I acquired a small collection of my dream cars, including a Ferrari 456M GT and 550 Maranello...all of my cars put a smile on my face each time I drive them or work on them...but being of Italian heritage, my Ferraris get my heart pumping to its maximum rate and the bolt of energy from turning the key reminds me that a lifetime of hard work has its rewards...buying Ferraris for profit is a sucker's game...buying and enjoying them simply makes me "happy"...well done James, you are on the right road.
@@JayEmmOnCars oh, forgot to say that I brought a 2010 Evora with every option and accessory that was the first imported into Camada after the Launch Edition...although I've only been able to drive 5,000 km, it puts a big smile on my face each time I take it out or when I'm detailing it...she's a real beauty!
I have a 2007 Z4 coupe and it’s the best car i’ve ever owned. I’ve owned way more expensive and powerful cars but nothing puts a smile on my face like the Z4.

As a 3 months old Lotus 350 Exige owner, the last part of your video echoes to me. I have been blown away by the positive reactions of people all around. Whether it is excited kids asking if they can take a picture, or other drivers lowering down their window to congratulate me and tell me how cool Lotuses are, I didn't expect anything like that, and I really enjoy all the positive interactions that goes with driving around in this car. Thanks a ton Jay for sharing these with us, I have partially you to blame for the decision of getting the Exige 350.
James, you are articulate and rarely make a factual mistake - so refreshing. I enjoy your content very much and as a Ferrari and a Porsche , and Lotus for that matter, owner I can relate. You deserve your good fortune! Couldn't agree with you more. Thank you for the information and entertainment.
What's funny is that Sam from Seen through glass has just uploaded a video in which his ferrari has broken down.. Also want to add that I feel the same way- I have a C7 RS6 and even when I just have to move it off the drive so the missus can get her car, I get excited.

Must say, ad and ad anouncement were briliant! 😁
This clip is a future Æsop's Fable in how not to be chippy😄
I am sure I am not the only one to think it. Nicely done sir...
That is an ad intro! HAHAHAHA Well done man.
You deserve it. I remember your early content and you have completely figured out what you need to to keep us listening to you for 30 mins straight… you definitely deserve the Ferraris it’s not just our niceness. It’s proof you’re good at what you do
I agree. I'm happily subscribed, and I really enjoyed this video. Didn't actually notice how long it was until I saw your comment!
I just want to commend JayEmm on the ad integration in this video. Your effort and clarity is appreciated.
The ad was brilliant 🤣🤣🤣
At last. Someone on UA-cam who understands the difference between mechanical grip and handling. I salute you, sir, you just went up in my estimation
Thanks, glad you appreciate that too
The handling begins as the mechanical grip gives up the ghost. 🤣
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said, “Old cars are expensive.” I think I spent more on my old Range Rovers than my Porsches. That’s just how it is, but I do miss them.
Yep, an old Range Rover costing £5k could easily have the same spent on it as a £100k Ferrari
@@JayEmmOnCarsYep. Just ask Doug DeMuro. 😅
I waited 17 years before I bought a Boxster, it didn’t get any more affordable over those years and the only regret I have is that it took so long!

Thats why it is very attractive to buy (even used) ferraris from official dealerships. You get 7 years of warranty!
Newer ones aren't bad 458 and above.
And speak to them frankly.
congratz from a german who feels zero schadenfreude but only appriciation for your content and the work you put in
As an owner of 4 Porsches and 1 Ferrari, I can tell you that I have at least 4x as many Ferrari maintenance problems/repairs as I do Porsche...
Which 993 is worth buying?
I have only one question: WTH are you doing in UA-cam comments section😂

Thats capitalism lol
You can not complain about prices on luxury items. If you don't like it just stay away. It is per definition not for everyone.

Well said and nice pick, the 430 is a lovely car
I have wanted a 430 since they were released, then two years ago I managed to fulfil that ambition and bought one. Put simply; it has been everything I ever hoped and dreamed it would be. Expensive to maintain, sure, but that is more than offset by literally zero depreciation. The thousands a year I need to budget for servicing and maintenance are worth it for the sheer joy of owning and driving it; there is simply nothing I would rather have spent the money on.
Keep saving.

Lovely video. I agree it is a great feeling when someone smiles at you or looks exited because you are in you car. Porsche - a car you drive.
Porsche is for nerds.

This was one of the coolest car videos I’ve ever watched, loved the realness and the breakdown of cost etc. But also loved the breakdown of what they’ve always meant to you and why despite the downsides they’re still worth it.
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it
This video is everything I hope one day Ferrari ownership will be. Superb video. Thank you.
Thanks Matt! That'll go straight in the tank of the 430 :)
Most car people have a story like that! Precious memories
Stay well.
The slow mo ad shots made me smile 😅
Over the years I’ve come to realize that in the UK it’s much, much cheaper for scheduled services. Here in the states we pay $150-$250 per hour for labor, plus parts, which are often marked up by 100%. So here in the US, especially in California where a lot of Ferrari owners live, yeah we can easily pay $5-10k for a major service especially when you add in the “while you’re in there” items. I assume in the UK they do the servicing cheap as a loss leader, to gain the customers.
Very true. In California you will automatically pay an exorbitant luxury tax.
What a lovely finish to this video. You’ve done great for yourself, you’re enjoying it and you’re sharing the joy with others. Bravo.
I’ve always loved Ferrari and the first time I drove one I could hardly breathe, when you see that badge on the steering wheel looking back at you. There’s nothing else like it. I can’t afford one though and have a boxster instead, an excellent car itself
Same . But I still get pretty excited when I see the Porsche badge. Got a 981.
What Price Joy!!!! Priceless
Indeed!!!! Keep Up The Great and Inspiring Work!!!!
Thanks!
Thankyou!
Jay I take immense joy in Watching you throttle those Fezzas. Well done pal
"Actually my mums name is Theresa!" That cracked me up! I laughed so hard I had to reach for my inhaler! 😂
If you suffer from Petrol head disease it will cost
A fast ford these days is a small fortune .
A great philosophy!
whats the monthly out of interest?
@@John_Wood_ it will all depend on deposit, interest and term, but always worth looking at and buying from a main dealer. They come with 2 year warranty reassures you about any issues that come up that isn’t maintenance and if within 7 years the servicing in the newer models is included
Keep flooring it James❤
Sorry to hear life is serving you lemons James, hope things brighten soon. Good on you for carrying on with this, great little chat. I have never been a Ferrari person but you have me thinking, especially with the comparisons to other seemingly more sensible options which can hit your wallet pretty hard as well.
I think this is your best video ever, i must admit that i haven´t watched all of your videos yet, but still. Great camera work and great self conversation that we all have in our head. If you ever drive down to south of Portugal feel free to our home and a garage while enjoying the sun. Take care!
I once owned 8 motorbikes from the early 80s to the mid 2000s, every paycheck there was something that needed tp be fixed, but i tell you what i had the best times !
I now own 3 which is easier but im always looking for the next 😂
Thanks for the Outloud huge belly laughs I got from the commercial. Kudos! Loved what you did with that, you should stick with that approach. Thanks again for the laughs
Glad you enjoyed it
I love many Ferrari's (definitely not all) and I'd love to own one one day without really having to worry about the costs.
That will be the "gremlins sir " all italian cars come with "gremlins " as do ducati bikes 🙄
People forget Ferrari is a small manufacturer, they don’t have huge R&D departments to test the durability of every single part also their R&D is more focused on performance and sometimes you have to sacrifice reliability to get that little extra performance.
Did you even watch the video
@@jaguar8408 yes, of course. What makes you doubt that?
Actually we have a word in french for the opposite of Schadenfreude : it is "compersion", being happy for somebody else's happiness. Sadly, we rarely use it in our own laguage. I think maybe because we are not educated in this way.
But I totally agree on your point : seeing some exceptionnal cars on the road, even for a few second, is such a delight I coul thank their owners for having bought them, and for driving them ! So thank you for being one of them.
Another great video James, nice to see someone wearing their heart on their sleeve ❤ Hope things get better for you, you have a huge community on your side 😊 As for the Ferrari collection, enjoy every moment of it 👍
I was out and about last weekend in my Lotus Excel. Got a very friendly wave from a Blue Ferrari driver (the car was Blue, not the driver).
In Spain is all waves to step on it :D
F12 is a proper car
Well done for leaving the herd.
I have a 2023 F-Type and love it. More than meets my needs for GT/sports car. Then a 2023 F-Pace SVR as rainy day/daily driver. It's a sleeper and tons of fun. Urus killer at half the price.
Those F-Types are beautiful cars, and damn they sound nice!
I have a 2016 F-Type and so far it has been nice! I wouldn't say it's unreliable, quite the opposite. I have to pay the dealership tax though, not many options outside for maintenance.
Legend, I’d take a F type over a Ferrari any day.
Enjoy! 🌈✌🏼
It’s the first time I have seen you emotional in your videos. Keep doing what you love. You are very good at it. 😊
You’ve made my day James, been watching your content since before the lotus Elise and I always get excited to see your content.
Hearing you say you’ve had a bad day and your cars have helped you get though it put a tear in my eye
I’ve had a bad couple of years and my cayman had been parked up but this coming Friday I get to drive it for the first time in almost two years and I can almost feel how rewarding it will be. It always worth it to keep on fighting, even if it just to turn the keys of your car at the end of the week
Great video and sums up what makes cars so special to us.
Best video ever, love the honesty, love the Scuderia. -And there is an edge to this video I like..
Hey James…really enjoyed this…very honest and direct discussion, so few telll how it is. Great stuff!
Hope you are okay on the whole, keep pushing forward. 😊
Thanks Rich!
Perfection.

Did he really say that lol
@@davem4131 Indeed he did. Lol
It’s a true pleasure watching your content James.
Please be assured pleasure received here.
Smiles per gallon. Keep them coming.
For those of you who can’t see yourself ever affording a Ferrari, don’t worry, buy yourself a TVR, for the same thrills (and expenses)!
TVRs sound better! Ferrari use flat plane crankshafts which are more reliable and have less vibration but sound bad. My neighbour had a Griffith 500 which sounded glorious!
@@tumslucks9781 I used to think that until I drove one. The sound from the inside of the car is a totally different experience
Good job! Your right! A small part of the joy is having other people enjoy seeing your car. I love it when I see an old car ( or Ferrari ) driving by!
This remains the most authentic and personal feeling car review channel on UA-cam. Thank you James.
Love the Hello Fresh segment
Yes, and your experience represents 4 per cent of 996 & 997. You are incapable of critical thinking.
Hi James
Another great video James, thank you!
After many years working with cars I have finally realised my dream and purchased my first a Ferrari, a Roma ( your review was partly responsible!). I have already done 3000 Miles in 10 weeks ( mostly in Europe) and it has been a real joy. I absolutely love it!!

I still don't get why you haven't owned an Aston Martin yet...
