@r h Imagine if the cost of items bought via microtransaction was equivalent to the effort put into them, they'd cost a buck at most. I heard Mass Effect: Andromeda's team wanted to go back to the feel of the original game by using the original character models and original game character animations.
I have a few rules when it comes to using pre-made assets in my projects. 1) Know the licencing details before hand. 2) Use unique and hard to pinpoint assets (These include things such as minor unimportant scripts and shaders) 3) NEVER use pre-made models, textures, sound effects, or major scripts. All major programming should be done by the developer so that he/she knows the code and how it works inside and out. Models, textures, and sound effects are really easy to pick out from the game. If you are going to use assets from asset stores, the only real justifiable assets to use are shaders or maybe some minor scripts for things like jiggle bones or other crap that isn't really necessary for your project to function.
Moved my pre-order $5 placeholder from that crap to Persona 5, just. In. Time. I mean, Inquisition tickled me just right. Wasn't perfect, but I had emotions and fun while playing it, so I don't know, I felt silly enough to put a fiver on the new Bioware... thing. I got a feeling in the wind and until I paid the thing off, my Persona 5 preorder had $10 on it and Andromeda could just go ahead and fuck itself. Ooh, the Gamestop experience in my town is getting real. The store manager has gone AWOL and the guy at the counter was yammering to me like someone who's just survived some shelling, telling me that his corporate mantis' have given him the mantle of "sorta, kinda, not really manager" while they slowly try to find someone else while he and his coworker work overtime to keep the place functioning without anyone to steer the leviathan. I never go into the fucking place to do anything else but peer at the stock for five seconds before moving along, but the rainfall of Yakuza, Resident Evil, Horizon, and Persona has had me creeping in for my pretty physical copies. I feel so bad for these guys. Didn't have much to do with how shit Andromeda is, but looking in these guys' shining, terrified/manic eyes makes me realize - I will not be doing any more preordering, unless (unlikely) we're talking about any of these really special games that have been coming out. Once Persona has gone, you won't see me slapping money down before the game's out. Andromeda's one very good reason. On another point, fuck the little cock at the other Gamestop across town at the outside mall who treated my SO like a worthless fuckwit. Hey you, you're the one working at a glorified Hot Topic that grudgingly stocks games, have some human decency. If I ever see the shitbag again I will sock him in his stomach and I hope to fuck he passes like Houdini did, and slowly. Shove that preorder for that FPS up your piss hole.
Mass effect andromeda is a game i find myself subjectively loving while being able to recognize its issues. its a breath of fresh air for me because unlike Horizon zero dawn which just felt like ANOTHER ubisoft style open world game, the game embraced the mechanics of the old mass effect games (even if it didnt nail all of them)
I enjoyed the game as well. Put 90 hours into the single player. I bought it on discount a couple months ago and it seems that they've fixed most of the animations. It's a decent game, not the best ever made, but worth playing. I've played far worse anyway.
I would have never bought it for full price, bit i was lucky enough to have a release deal near me so i got for half price. 30 euros was reasonable, it was an okay game (visual issues aside i mean) and i don't regret the purchase, but don't ever buy it for 60, like ever.
What's really sad is that there is a ton of struggling artists out there looking for work and instead of "supporting" the industry by hiring them to make unique assets for their games, they're buying the same cheap quality junk year after year.
Ubisoft Montreal is part of Ubisoft and is a first party developer. I would be pretty stupid and time consuming saying Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Sofia, Ubisoft Milan, Ubisoft Quebec etc. when all of them put the same bs on their games because they are Ubisoft
I was going to buy Mass Effect Andromeda. Emphasis on WAS. I didn't realize that a game in development for 5 years and costing $40 Million could look like an early access game when it was finally released. And For Honor has micro-transactions in it? Both Andromeda and For Honor looked like such good games! Damn you, EA and Ubisoft! Damn you both to hell! Yes, I did just do that.
Not sure if Jim ever talked about this but, I think it's important to note how difficult these asset flippers are making it for anyone who wants to actually use these assets. I mean, there's a lot to be said for a good salesman but, damn. I personally toyed with the idea of making an in depth RPG using the Unit Z assets. But when the damned thing showed up literally everywhere I basically said fuck it.
I've encountered the weird leg glitch but other than that, it's been an amazing experience and I've not encountered any CTD issues or the like, so far (30hrs and counting). I'm sorry to all of you who are having issues!
Hearing news and interviews coming from people who leave Valve, this doesn't sound all that surprising. Apparently, it's just an open-air madhouse with no official management, which means that it's developed a pirate democracy with the most influence held by company veterans obsessed with a cult of personality around the studio. www.wired.com/2013/07/wireduk-valve-jeri-ellsworth/ Pretty much every other story talks about lack of leadership resulting in complete lack of direction or drive, which makes a ton of sense.
That's the second time this month you've knocked a Boglin off your lectern - you'd better quit it before we're forced to call Boglin Protective Services!
I know this is unrelated, but do other people seriously have animation fuck-ups in Andromeda? I've been playing since the AU launch (on XB1) and I haven't had any issues. Is it just me that DOESN'T have problems!?
I didn't have many, memers are overblowing the problem. The game is great has tons of content and the overarching story is absolutely fine. Most of the core game is great it's just animations, and while bad, are routinely dismissed in tons of other games, people wanted to hate this before this came out so they are. (I am in no way saying this game doesn't have problems)
EdgeOI I'm not saying the game is perfect (I have a few nitpicks) but I just felt like the odd one out for my average sessions with this game NOT resembling your typical Bethesda RPG. And I never understood the hate parade surrounding Andromeda, but then again, I ignore hype culture altogether. I only found out about Andromeda 2 weeks before it came out, so I'm largely uninformed. But judging by the fact that this apparent outrage is related to a video game, it's probably something pointless. (No offence intended. The vocal minority I'm deferring to gets very angry very easily.)
Andrew Jones I rented it yesterday, and although I'm enjoying it I have ran across some issues. When I'm driving the Mako on Eos there's this one spot where the game just freezes for a few seconds. The main thing that stood out to me was that at the very beginning of the game, when exploring the abandoned space station on Habitat 7, it did not render whatsoever. A majority of the ship was just black pixels and when I got close it made Ryder 8 bit. I took screenshots if you want to see.
No one at Valve is going to be reviewing Steam uploads. Valve has a totally flat organizational structure. Not even Gabe Newell can make someone do something they do not wish to do. And you're not going to find anyone who volunteers for that job. Not to mention, Gabe Newell very sensibly wants Steam to become a channel which anyone can upload to. You know, like UA-cam. The site drowned in so much unwatchable shit you could not imagine... but which you need not imagine because they have a sensible recommendation engine. Which is what Steam needs. Also, Ubisoft doesn't think gamers are stupid. But they do know gamers are weak. So very weak. All full of piss and vinegar... but they've got a spine like overcooked spaghetti. They see content for sale, they buy it. They know no other way. Giving money to AAA publishers is like breathing to them. They'll complain online all day, sign petitions all night. And in the morning, they open their wallet and prove what soulless husks of garbage they truly are, preordering the next batch of bullshit.
Are you implying youtube has no systems in place to prevent unwanted contend from being distributed, or to prevent people making money of of things they literally stole and re-uploaded? That is certainly not the case, nor should it continue be the case for Steam. You also have to consider the fact that there is a (not insignificant) up-front monetary barrier for consuming content on Steam. Not so on youtube. Their standards can and should be better than they currently are.
You're right about gamers. It should extend to general consumers as well. The most they can do is complain to a support representative who has no power to fix what they're upset about anyway(but boy do they never realise that), they love to yell, and shout, threaten to move to a competitor and sue, but they always fall in line, always continue supporting the very companies screwing them over in the end. The bloated, lazy, undignified shits who shout about their rights one second and willingly sell them away the next. Today's customers are all bark and no bite. They love the petty feeling of power when the customer service rep sheepishly apologizes to their disgusting asses and assures them the company does all it can to fix the problem(it never does), but can't ever do things that ACTUALLY hurt companies, such as boycotts. Fuck customers. They are never right.
almost never right, except when the product is actually broken. But that's usually not most of the time, its usually them just being whiny self-entitled bitches
I personally have only ever bought a single AAA game, and that was Homeworld Remastered. I'm rather certain others could manage too. But they really dont want to. The silent majority does not give a shit about the industry being shit.
You think they "paid" for the assets they're flipping? They just pirate this shit, rename it, then dump it onto Steam. Steam doesn't bother to verify they paid for any of the assets, nor care if there's 10 other games using the exact same assets. The store who sells the assets also doesn't bother to verify with the games that the assets were bought. No one cares, so this flipping BS has not only gone on for years now, but is getting out of control. It's like a roach infestation that has been ignored for so long and allowed to multiply so much that you're tripping over the things in piles when you enter the front door of the store. That's what Steam has become, a store with thousands of roaches crawling all over everything, making the few minority products of value difficult for new users to find, as if it wasn't already unappealing. What used to be the best digital game store is now covered in garbage, and being laughed at by every other store. Say what you want about Battlenet, Uplay, Origin, GOG, GMG, OP, or whatever other store; they aren't covered in thousands and thousands of garbage products. Literally EVERY other store, even being digital, practices something called "quality control", and simply will not allow all this trash into their store. Most of this garbage is sold only on Steam because anyone else would tell them to fuck off. But not Valve. Valve, ever the backalley hooker, welcomes everyone.
I almost skipped the post-credits and then suddenly realized you'd heard the news that has been causing the subreddit I'm currently on to be self-immolating the past week. THANK GOD FOR YOU, JIM. I'M SO RELIEVED TO HAVE YOU ON THIS ONE. I looove the base gameplay of For Honor so very, very much, but all the ancillary bullshit has been driving me crazy.

"I feel the strange need to listen to Jim Sterling bitch about something" **Checks Subscriptions** Hot damn, Using luck instead of notifications for everyone pays off again!
I was anxiously clicking refresh on my browser just to see if Jim had finally uploaded this weeks Jimquisition. It pretty much makes Monday a not completely shit day for me.
Hahahah, props for the subtle instrumental version of Fleetwood Mac's "Tell Me Lies" playing during the Asset Flippers rant.
I didn't know Cornflake Homunculus had an Asari cosplay! Looks decent, considering.
Definitely gotta make the zombie spider an NPC in a storygame
He'll be British and deeply apologetic
"You wouldn't try to unlock everything in wow" Hum... Some people do that... Actually some people did that even before there was achievment ... Actually for some people it's the bloody point of it... Actually what's the point of collectible if not to COLLECT THEM
Jim no. How dare you equate Peebee with a DOOM monster!?
DOOM doesn't deserve that kind of treatment!
Omg. 20 minutes of sexual bliss... erm i mean Jim's sensual voice. Love you Jim!
DarkKitarist You don't have to love Jim. But you have to thank god... for him.
QVear I thank god for him when i pray to his shrine.
I liked the fan art of him. ^_^
This is what happens when you don't let shit die. They keep wanting more and more.
That moment when you know exactly what this episode is about...
Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies" should be the theme song for the Greenlight series.
Can someone kindly remind me where the music from the Mass Effect section comes from? I can't remember and it's driving me nuts since the ME Jimpressions.
Jumper from Castle Crashers.
Thanks! Now I'm not sure how I know it in the first place, cause I never played it lol.
You probably know it from geometry dash, actually.
Cant understand how ppl actualy defend games like for honor, overwatch and CoD. If i spend =/>60 dollars on a game, i want a COMPLETE game, not microtransaction BS. "But its just cosmetic stuff"... So? You pay 60+ dollars for a game, just to let 'em squeeze your wallet again? You ppl are dooming the entire gaming niche.
@r h Imagine if the cost of items bought via microtransaction was equivalent to the effort put into them, they'd cost a buck at most. What we got these days aren't even microtransactions because a microtransaction that costs more than a dollar or two is already a normal transaction without the micro-prefix.
The Steam Cleanup Man looks like a character from Shovel Knight.
Well yeah, Jim's wearing a plague doctor mask, which is what Plague Knight's mask is based upon.
I know, but I mean the art piece at 3:39 has an art style and palette choice that would make it a cool addition to Plague of Shadows.
11:19 For the next 25 seconds, that was a really good read Jim. I would like to hear that as voice over work for a villain in a game or some other media. Which makes sense since in media if a character has a UK accent it's almost certain they are the villain. So golf clap.
The Doom sound effects in the intro were amazing.
"You wouldn't unlock all the characters in a MOBA" unless you're playing anything that isn't LoL since most others offer a "Pay X amount now for all released and future champions"
If what we're dealing with right now is Bannondorf I'd hate to see Calamity Bannon.
Bannondorf...this pleases me greatly! An extra thank god for Jim this week!
Mass(ive D)effect
aren't you a cheeky little lad
Yup, about a week late.
Saniss48 defect
Bannondorf must catch on. Now.
my mate keeps buying steel packs.hes like "im not really spending any money because i sold my CSGO knife" like WTF, he cant comprehend that fact he could have bought a whole new game buy now
I absolutely love the Asari making doom sounds
This was a great episode, Jim. I also don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing that MEA animation mash up at the beginning of the video. It's hilarious.
What is song that plays before the intro I know i recognize it from something
It's "Jumper" from Castle Crashers.
During the ME reel? One of them is the Castle Crashers theme. The other, I dunno...
Josue Ayala oh yeah the castle crashers theme thanks!
From geometry dash
That little laugh at 18:49 just made my day.
do I hear sweet little lies by Fleetwood mac in the background?
That game with the Aliens and the white armored people looks amazing for a one man product. Man I wish some huge company would hire that one guy because he really deserves it. What a passion project.
At first I was like " *GODDAMNIT I CLICKED REPLAY ON THE ME:A VIDEO AGAIN* !"
But then I was like " _Oh!_ "
And by the end I'm like " *_Ohhh Myyyy_* ..."
My face is tired... of laughing at that montage at the intro. XD
I heard Mass Effect: Andromeda's team wanted to go back to the feel of the original game by using the original character models and original game character animations.
Sambou Jaiteh The original has better animations and models.
So using eye animations that would look bad on the Dreamcast means going back to Mass Effect 1?
Patrick Murphy Yeah, they were a little stiff but nowhere near as bad as Andromeda.
I also heard that they were planning on using the original game's character models, but EA dummied them out and are planning to sell them as DLC.
the mouth movements literally look like sonic adventure 2 though
This is the story of how the Steam Cleaner slowly becomes the Cornflake Homunculus.
Those Doom noises w the blue chick lolol
I have a few rules when it comes to using pre-made assets in my projects.
1) Know the licencing details before hand.
2) Use unique and hard to pinpoint assets (These include things such as minor unimportant scripts and shaders)
3) NEVER use pre-made models, textures, sound effects, or major scripts.
I got mocked in my FB group for stopping other people from pre-ordering games. LOOK WHO'S LAUGHING NOW MOFOS! HAHAHA!
I'm looking forward to the game that puts all that shit together in a hidden level with a banner saying "He's Jim Fucking Sterling, son."
Loving the Ziggy nod Jim you legend
That feeling you get when Jimquisition video credits start rolling and there is still a few minutes left in the video...
I'm curious what you feel about Plants vs Zombies 2's "micro" transactions such as the $99.95 ones.
6:17 a reference to The League. This is why I love you Jim :D
What's the song during the ME:A montage?
Shooterguy15 it's from castle crashers. type castle crasher ost and you'll find it on youtube. Track in the intro for this vid is called "jumper".
Shooterguy15 Oh my god THANK YOU, I've been trying for over a week to place that song.
What's really sad is that there is a ton of struggling artists out there looking for work and instead of "supporting" the industry by hiring them to make unique assets for their games, they're buying the same cheap quality junk year after year.
your background looks 100x better in this episode. you finally got it to awesome again.
Ubisoft isn't a developer. They're a publisher. Which is worse - they dont make anything, just ruin it.
They're both
This is the first video in a long time where the Jimquisition logo is actually completely in frame. That's rarer than Cadbury Creme Eggs in America.
But what will the Steam Cleaner do when Green light dies? He's the hero we need!
Jack Burt Perhaps the Steam Cleaner will rise again one day. Y'now, if Direct doesn't work out much better than Greenlight
no he shall become The Steam Dealer, dealing with steam shite!
I love Professor Herik just peacing out during the freaking conversation.
In a way, making fun of if Greenlight videos was more heroic than a firefighter or someone fighting in a war.
Five seconds in and Jumper starts playing. That makes this the best Jimquisition, by default.
UnitZ... Unity... Huh, only now I get it. Jeez, I'm getting old or something. :S
Your rage with UnitZ ending was amazing.
Why can't corporations just admit that they made microtransactions because they thought people might be interested in buying the things they made?
I've encountered the weird leg glitch but other than that, it's been an amazing experience and I've not encountered any CTD issues or the like, so far (30hrs and counting). I'm sorry to all of you who are having issues!
is this more different? and more innocent?
No; it was just born different and innocent.
Hearing news and interviews coming from people who leave Valve, this doesn't sound all that surprising. Apparently, it's just an open-air madhouse with no official management, which means that it's developed a pirate democracy with the most influence held by company veterans obsessed with a cult of personality around the studio.
www.wired.com/2013/07/wireduk-valve-jeri-ellsworth/
Pretty much every other story talks about lack of leadership resulting in complete lack of direction or drive, which makes a ton of sense.
>20 minutes
Im sure in for a surprise at the end
Sm-Art Things hope you like Microtransactions
Andrew Jones I like the game but I've had a loooooot of problems and glitches.
TaliMancer N7 Could be. It's no secret that AAA PC ports are rubbish nine times out of ten.
Could I get a source for "Fucked up music/Cornflakes Homunculus Theme" from 6:33 on?
Stay in school! Chilidogs!
Thanks parrot. I almost forgot about that line from the video I just watched.
jokerswild00 fuckin rekt XD
Jim's Sonic is better than Roger Craig Smith. Thank the Chaos Emeralds for him.
Chili Dogs! And Knuckles.
Always Knuckles.
Never forget the Echidna and his enchiladas.
Jim Sterling you don't even need it but I'm still going back and liking every single fucking video you've made.
Thank ghod for you.
Dustin Rodriguez Reviewing games would require Valve to pay for a decent infrastructure, something that does not exist in Valve's vocabulary.
I was scared when I realized that Jumper was playing for the intro. XD
1:40 PLEASE ANYBODY WHAT IS THE MUSIC FROM THIS CLIP? I haven’t heard in ages but I’m going CRAZY trying to figure out.. 😵
No Life Hacks this week?
UNSUBSCRIBED!
Life Hack The Lever!
I looove the base gameplay of For Honor so very, very much, but all the ancillary bullshit has been driving me crazy.
it's unit zed.
0utta S1TE Zee is American while Zed is for the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia.
Thank you, Wikipedia, for it's meaning there.
Nobody says "Day Zed".
Not even Canadians.
What is the name of the song which is played at around 17:00 mark? thanks =)
Best birthday present ever Thank god for you Jim!
