Aha! Not the video I was hunting for, but this is even better! My dad told me about some of the old high-efficiency engine ideas and alternative fuel ideas from when he was in his prime (he was born in 1927). I didn't realize Pogue's carburetor was actually marketed, though! I would like very much to experiment with this idea, once I get a home that has a work shop and garage area!

I did this to my Riding lawnmower, I did the valve to adjust the air ratio too and it ran fantastic until the fuel got cold. I too shut my garage door. I couldn't believe how clean the spark plug was after an hour of running it. No doubt the motor oil would stay clean oil change to oil change. It's that clean. Did it 10 years ago but never came up with a decent fuel heater and you need to move the Timing a bit to prevent a backfire through the carburetor but the magneto is mounted not meant to change it. I built a backflash valve to stop it from traveling to the fuel. This lawnmower normally backfired occasionally when you'd turn it off, that's the only time it did backfire.
    Great video! You inspired me.

About 8 years ago I came up with a VERY similar vapor setup. The only difference is I added exhaust recirculation to lower combustion temperatures and to slow the flame front. This stopped the backfires. I made a video of this setup on my lawn mower. It not only decreased fuel consumption but it also allowed much longer oil change intervals. This mower was ran for 6 years without changing the oil!!

In the 1920's - 1930's I can assume that Pogue's work had caused some competition problems, because of his miraculous work it would seem that what $00.05 of gasoline would last you 500 miles per gallon. Hell, inventors that created different fuel systems that run on hydrogen oxygen (basically water with the electrolysis process) got arrested and sent to jail because of the fuel system being so environmentally friendly. And now that I think about it, mixing hydrogen + oxygen + gasoline vapor and your engine will run smoothly because by the time the oxygen and hydrogen are ignited, the two will combine into water again and create steam which will also in turn give you a small increase in torque. Not to mention that it will clean your engine.

Congratulations you built a beautiful truck! If you make an evaporater using exhaust gasses you eliminate the backfire problems altogether. Simply because it is oxygen deplete. On any car the exhaust is mostly water in vapor form that is why an o2 sensor works. Good job!!

    Hi Fred,
    Very good video! Thank you!!
I heard and read about Nelson Pogue many many years ago now, likely because I have been fascinated by clean energy for ever... actually since I was about 10 years old... simple reason being that I got my first car back then and being a kid I had very little money to buy gas for my car to drive it in our backyard... so I got interested in fuel economy... and this has never left me since...
Now I am 60 years old and still fascinated by clean engines and I believe Pogue really found the solution but was sidetracked by big oil... which they did mainly by adding lead - and possibly other - products to the fuel which in turn contaminated his carburetor and made it to clog up/fail... although it was said that the Pogue carburetor was used in large numbers again by the US during WW2 in North Africa against Rommel and the Africa Corps, out of necessity and because of the long supply lines; but the wartime fuel was then again also free of any additives...
The fact remains, the Pogue principle is still valid today: heat the gas to full evaporation, then you will get full and clean burn and maximum efficiency!!
I have found a new way to heat the gas to full evaporation using modern technology, which allows for a significantly smaller setup and meticulous dosing and can also be implemented on some Diesel engines with great success and enormous gains!
Will be testing further on a small power generator and then implementing on a modern V8...
Always happy to hear from you Fred!
    Jake

I would be curious to see what you come up with. I used to pull vapors from my fuel tank through a little heat exchanger that was 12 volt heated until the engine was warm and then switched to hot engine coolant.I was able to gain a 13% mpg increase, I have since gone step farther and have a total of 50% increase by adding another process, but I will keep that a secreat for now. All of this is done on a 1995 Cherokee 4.0l.

Frederick Ropp, I was just talking to someone about this. It was in the early 80's when I saw the schematics for a carburetor that did just as you are trying to do. It had two butterfly, one lower and one higher and when the vehicle was first started it started with raw gas, as it warmed up the gas was vaporized by the heat in the tubing and the car would run on vapor, that is where the second butterfly in the carburetor came in. The carburetor was taller than usual because it had tubing winding through it for both the gas and the hot water from the cooling system. I wanted to get a copy of that schematic but when I mentioned getting a chance to get a closer look the owner of it took it away and would not let me look at it closer. If I were a mechanic I might have tried to make one back then but I am not though the schematics stayed in my mind all this time. My understanding is those papers were illegal for them to have and they didn't want to get in trouble if they had been caught with them. Anyway, it was a neater setup but the same principle. They were bought up by an oil company and shelved, probably the same happened with the carburetor you saw in the magazine.

Hey Fred. Your fuel tank isn't sealed. The fumes are leaking through the air filter that is on the tank. You may want to think about removing the air filter that's on the tank, make an upside down U shaped pipe and install a one way valve on it (then of course adapt an air filter to that). Note for others: The pipes have to be upside down to work; they cannot come straight up out of the mini fuel tank. If the one way valve is not placed the correct way, it will just always be open.
A one way valve could also be placed in the main piping in order to prevent backfires from reaching the vapors in the fuel tank.

Aviation rumors: people say that running lean at first gives more Exhaust gas heat temp, but if you keep on leaning it further it actually runs cooler & no CO, (from pilot experiences when low on fuel). I think you are on the right track, keep working it, you could use an older fashion 'vacuum" solenoid tapped with a T fitting into to any vacuum line to run the solenoid (not for fumes) to actuate a valve that makes it Richer when starting out (less vacuum), and make it run leaner when at normal vacuum conditions (up to speed) . REMEM the old vacuum operated windshield wipers, they would quit working on hills unless you let off the gas because of less vaccum. So its a research to find the happy compromise where when engine is under more load (like hills or starting out, it makes it richer, and vice versa). At higher speeds over 60 it may also have less vacuum so that would need some additional adjustment or a "shut off" condition based on speed?
FYI: I use the vacuum solenoid all the time for years now on my older minivan to cut off the AC on engine loaded (starting out or up hills), and it really does seem to save me mpg (yes I have manual over ride switch for situations where I prefer to lose the mpg at first, for increased AC like when car sits in sun too long and at first its heat soaked.

Beautiful truck, Allow me to help you. Make a stainless sealed both ends pipe about 2" around and as long as possible that you can mount beside exhaust as close to header as possible. Drill hole in one end of pipe to allow mounting of a fuel injector. Drill another hole about 1/2" in diameter and thread it next to injector and attach metal pipe to breather. Wire the injector to a 555 timer circuit at fry's electronics, it's ok if you run a 7 psi pump. Remove the time on control and wire an external volume control that you will mount on throttle.
Now then set time off on timer for a good idle with time on set at mid point. The throttle will increase the time on when you accelerate.
Pogues carb was quite elaborate and I have an idea that it worked with 100 octane fuel, because oil company changed formula to stop it. This idea will turn all liquid into gas even if they use water. Plus you will not be storing a liquid under hood. As soon as the fuel transforms it will be sucked in by expansion. DO NOT drill a hole in stainless to let air in, Bad idea. We want everything to be sealed and contained in the pipe. To feed the injector just splice the fuel line and be sure to run metal line as close as possible to injector. CAUTION: You or anyone reading this CAN NOT hold me responsible for any information I give here. If you do this and it blows up in your face you did it wrong and I will not attend your funeral. Good Luck. Hope you are still at it

@@alext9067 Its not rocket science, its a case of too many weak willed humans unwilling to use their brains and look back into history and reach beyond the pre-planned-neo-canned technobabble garbage and think for themselves.
We are lied to so much and told over and over that we are so much better off than our ancestors when now we are in debt like no other generation in the history of the earth, we live in a grimy filthy sooty mess of dioxins, we have to slave just for the money to drive to our slave master's grist mills, all because we lack the wit and the will to step out of the mindset of slavery and stop running their rat mazes.
People with WAY more money than I have rely on the fast easy cheap DIRTY convenience of liquefied petroleum instead of even doing so much as vaporizing it, let alone using methanol ['wood gas' (the pyrolitic decomposition of organic matter)] or bio-gas [methane from the microbial composting/decomposition of organic matter] which occur freely and naturally everywhere.
You can literally make fuel from your lawn, your household garbage, your garden trimmings, your personal waste products, and yes, even old computer and appliance parts (the plastic parts), any and all of which can be carefully mixed, matched, or separated to virtually any mixture ratio people desire.
If it has carbon in it, [and believe it or not, even sand!] you can make viable engine fuel from it.
In Sonoma, California, at the Sonoma County Sanitary Station [can be found on any map and visited free of charge] they have large diesel generators which run round the clock on a naturally occurring product of the biological degradation of used household trash and producing megawatts of power. Not 'diesel fuel' even! A mixture of methane, silane, ethane, ethanol, methanol, acetone, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide, along with other trace gases.
I had a discussion about mining the trash dump for a more efficient manner of generating power from it but they are so proud of their system they won't give it up until it is exhausted, and it honestly looks even if they stopped adding to the landfill today, like they will be producing fuel there for the next three thousand years.
So there ya go. Trash that nobunny wants to ever see again is silently working to produce power for future generations just below the surface of the ground, no gasoline or diesel fuel whatsoever.
Why do i bring this up? Because even if you lack the land, machinists skills and tooling [let alone local permits!] to make your own bio fuel synthesis plant, SURELY you can rig up a simple BOX to vaporize common gasoline into a dry vapor! ~( 'w')/

A Model A Ford with an updraft carb runs super clean if tuned correctly. I had an Oliver Crawler with an updraft carb and a A motor. Difficult to start ran rough till hot and from batch to batch of gasoline required adjustment. Then each batch of gas had different consumption rates. The Auto makers stopped using the up draft because it was a nuisance. Some Gasolines had no light hydrocarbons to speak of so the engine would not start without starting fluid. Decades ago Smokey Unick had his vapor engine with a turbo and super heated the gasoline into a perfect vapor at 400F with sucess .Huge improvement in fule consumption. Bad Emissions- NOX was a problem. For now we are stuck with OBD2 and downfraft carbs.

Alot of those people that I know dont believe that it can work, and the rest of them say its things like this that will get you killed. They say our "Government doesn't want us to be able to do this", they make more money keeping it dirty. You said yourself that this technology / idea has been around since 1920's. And you and I know for a fact that it can be done, So why haven't they done it?, Because it's all a money scheme scam. You try a make a pogue carb and put it on the market, only to take over the whole automotive industry worldwide they'll kill you. Quick note, use a small steel grid to roll up your carbon felt to put in a gravity fed canister with float to then go up a tube to a t joint to made to work like a carburetor. The larger the top of the pipe of the pipe t and the smaller the bottom the leaner the fuel air mix. Air moving around the wick make a vapor.

Vapor Carbs like the Pogue Catb or the Oyster Carb don't work anymore because the fuel companies added Resins to the fuel specifically to defeat such carbs. Bubbler systems work because they simply draw the vapors off from the surface of the gasoline (leaving the Resins behind in the bubbler tank).

    • @ezl7052

You are right on and vaporizing gasoline is actually cracking it and the heavy-ends end up in the bottom of the vapor canister. The refining process on
gasoline has 7 compounds in the gasoline and some of the compounds will not completely vaporize until over 300 deg. F. Gasoline is a poor fuel to
vaporize if you want a better fuel for this use White gasoline (lantern fuel) which is a pure form of gasoline. The question arises, do all of the high mileage
carburetion systems really work, yes. The Coleman stoves and lanterns proves that a vapor fuel system will work just don't use regular gasoline, it will
destroy the Coleman Generator. The heavy-ends of the gasoline clogs the vapor panels in the Generator.

The reason your pipes have so much carbon from burning liquid gasoline is that in the process of internal combustion motor produces 6-7 gallons of water and literally drags the incombustibles out the exhaust hence giving us poor efficiency. The over fueling is by design to keep your exhaust valves cool. I run my car on water from an electrolyzer in my shop only; great fun too. Check out Water for fuel, Stanley Meyers-----Thanks David

I pull vapors from my fuel tank through a little heat exchanger that is 12 volt heated until the engine is warm and then switched to hot engine coolant.I was able to gain a 13% mpg increase and burn clean. I have since gone step farther and have a total of 50% increase by adding another process, but I will keep that a secret for now. All of this is done on a 1995 Cherokee 4.0l. You sir, are original. I have seen many many setups but the heat circulating through the copper tubing is a very nice idea. Your setup is somewhat same in theory to some I have seen, yet I have not seen one like this. Have you tried an ultrasonic transducer? If you decide to do so be sure to take off the sensor, plug the holes with a conductive metal and seal. Otherwise the petrol will destroy the ultrasonic transducer pretty quick. Great work, and the 1950s 200 mpg car is an amazing story! Sadly its oil companies that stand to lose money, and yes they collude with auto manufacturers. This is now 2018, in my humble opinion 400-1000 mpg on gasoline with today's technology is conceivable. People seem to like the electric route, but this creates more problems than gasoline and would further dampen an economy. Like you said, this invention will create an economy so strong because everyone could travel to and fro, which leads to more money in everyones pockets that would be spent on just about everything imaginable as well as open doors to new ideas.

I am looking into automotive engineering and this concept is extremely interesting to me, I am baffled nobody has designed a proper and safe version of this with good tunability, most people call me paranoid and a conspiracy theorists but I think It hasn't become mainstream because of big oil companies, if this gets into our everyday cars they will cry "It's too dangerous" and try to get people to buy their more inefficient systems and keep their demand for oil up, otherwise the product they have is basically worthless.

something I commented onI might have a cxouple of suggestions that will improve your setup. My brother and his friend made a headgasket with four sets of platinum points equally mounted around the cylinder. It was layered in between the gasket material like a circuit board. So instead of firing from the spark plug it fired from each set of points. The platinum points had no place to hold any carbon build up so would not foul out like a spark plug. and firing the gas mixture with four sets of spark burned the fuel vapor quicker and more completely.(old airplanes had two sparkplugs per cylinder)
Giving an increase of power with less fuel consumtion and less emissions. My idea to add to this is to reduce fuel droplet size thus increasing surface area of the fuel by using an ultrasonic mister which instantly vaporizes a drop of liquid to a finer mist than a carburator is capable of. This should also increase power while decreasing consumption andEmmisions. The reason you do not see this gasket method of spark on the market now is a sparkplug company bought their patent. Their was a drawback to the design they had not worked out at the time and that was that the gasket was thicker and you had to torque it down just right or it would blow the gasket. But this was 40 years ago and we have much better materials to work with now. I really hope you read this or anyone else . It could be an easy add on for cars well worth the cost for the increased economy and decrease of emmisions. Hopefully give a little more time for the transition to the totally electric cars that are coming. Jake The Snake Was interested in the gasket for his race cars as it would have been a huge advantage. So if you need an investor you might want to try him. It also goes to show how money trumps humanityand that big corporations (Firestone) are more concerned with the bottom line than reducing polution to save mankind. We really need to institute a crimes against humanity law for people like that and Big Pharma who suppress or overprice discoveries that benefit life.. Please send a comment should you read this. I like to think I am at least trying yo help.
