I am Italian, born and raised in Sicily until the age of 28, then l moved to the US. It is true that we put olive oil in pretty much everything. Every soup has a drizzle of EVOO, unless it is a meat based soup. I have to disagree on the tomato peel and seeds. I grew up watching my mom make tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes. The very reason why we peel tomatoes ( by scalding) is because the peel is often too thick and not appealing in the final product. I recall that whole tomatoes would be prepared for canning by first peeling them and then placing them in a huge kettle. They would be cooked and seasoned before canning, seeds would stay. For tomato sauce, we had to use a strainer with the purpose of making a pulp, not to remove the seeds, but because of the process, the seeds remained inside the mechanical strainer, we did not have Vitamix back then lol. I am pretty sure that if the peel and seeds were bad for our health, we Italians would know about it. We eat whole tomatoes in our salads as well.
After watching the video, I researched lectins and found that many of the studies are in vitro, not on people. But also found that several Italian scientists and doctors reassure us that lectins are rendered innocuous by the cooking process. In addition, you would have to eat very large quantities of lectins containing vegetables or fruits in order to cause damage. We also eat lentils, beans ( fagioli), which Gundry has pretty much black listed, i never heard these were bad for us. We have been eating them for thousands of years.
I am always puzzled by the sensationalized fads that come out of the US. Extreme views that work well in capturing the attention of the masses. They usually work well for the sale of supplements and books.
Update: This gastroenterologist proves my points, please watch what he has to say about the lectins fad diet.
Dr. Will Bulsiewicz reassures us that lectins are not bad for us, actually foods such as legumes (deemed bad by Dr. Gundry) will help you loose weight, lower your blood pressure, cut colon cancer risk. Watch the video here

    Here are some key takeaways:
-Leaky gut is a major underlying cause of many health issues like autoimmune diseases, joint pain, brain fog, fatigue, etc. It allows foreign substances to enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammation.
-Lectins in foods like beans, grains, and nightshades can damage the gut lining and cause leaky gut. Cooking and preparation methods can reduce lectins.
-The gut microbiome heavily influences health and longevity. An imbalanced microbiome promotes leaky gut. Fecal transplants can help restore a healthy microbiome.
-Mitochondria produce energy and ketones help mitochondria become more efficient and protect themselves from damage during starvation.
-Olive oil, mushrooms, inulin, resistant starches feed good gut bacteria. Exercise and yoga also help the microbiome.
-Time restricted eating, intermittent fasting, and avoiding late night meals give the body downtime to repair the gut.
-Getting adequate vitamin D, vitamin C, and consuming olive oil, mushrooms, and other polyphenols support health and longevity.
-The brain undergoes a "wash cycle" during deep sleep which removes toxins. Getting adequate sleep, especially early in the night, supports this.
    - Cholesterol and heart disease can be caused by an autoimmune reaction, not just too much cholesterol intake.
    - Ketones signal to mitochondria to become inefficient on purpose as a protective mechanism during starvation.
    - The gut-brain connection is very important. Leaky gut can lead to leaky brain and neuroinflammation.
    - Women's intuition and "gut feelings" may stem from their strong connection to their gut microbiome.
    - Eating for your microbiome, rather than just yourself, is an important perspective. Feed the bugs prebiotics.

The diet that is best for any given individual is directly correlated with the health of their microbiome and what sort of diet is necessary to shift that microbiome. This is why people do really well on different diets. One diet is a disaster for one person and healing for the other. It's all about what is going on in the microbiome.
This is why I always get annoyed by medical professionals that say there's only one right way to eat.

Heating lectins in a pressure cooker on high heat for 15 minutes can destroy many of them - can be used on beans, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, rice, potatoes, squash, peas, lentils, etc. Rice and potatoes can also be frozen for 12 hours and then reheated to reduce insulin response via resistant starch created from freezing. So there are controls to reduce issues for lectins, insulin response, etc.

They did not have electric cooking tools 10,000 years ago to "delectinize" foods, but we do now, so this is a really valuable hypothesis. This raises the question whether the diets of thee isolated tribes with pre-industrial cultures who had perfect teeth and great health, as documented by Weston A. Price, not have foods with lectins in their diets?

@@MorningDove154 when you eat a diet devoid of carbohydrates, you don’t have hunger cravings or insulin spikes. You get a more balanced system hormonally. You’re a leptin. grehlin are not in a resistant state they actually work like they’re supposed to. I eat mostly beef a little bit of chicken, some bacon or sausage and duck eggs. I am in my 14th month. I’ve lost three sizes. I feel amazing. My lower G.I. issues have been healed. That’s another thing you cannot heal when you are eating garbage. In my elimination diet I found out that vegetables were inflammatory to me so I had to remove them. I was on keto and they did very well except that I was not healing some issues that I had that were getting worse and worse and then another one was my arthritis in my hip. At one point I could not even walk I had to hobble, and now I walk over a mile and a half a day. I know that doesn’t sound like much but I have to go care for my mom who has dementia every morning. If you go on an elimination diet, you have to do it for at least 90 days. It might be rough just like starting any other day at where you’re eliminating garbage and you might have, some dumping going on but that’s how it is if you are addicted to foods that cause inflammation

The problem with the format of this show is that it’s just a collection of someone’s opinions without any discourse or push back, the opinions may be that of those who are educated and experienced and have worked in any given field for years BUT this doesn’t allow to questioning and holding their message up to the light.
Every single episode the host just sits and agrees and acts amazed at everything that’s said.
There are lots of conflicting information between guests and it will be leading to people just jumping on the message of which ever was the last episode they watched.
One example here is the “brains are getting smaller after agriculture” comment, this is ignore the swathes of data to show that brain size doesn’t necessarily correlate with intelligence and in fact brain “efficiency” is the reason for our brains having shrunk.
Not a good format I’m afraid.

    • @mindfulmomentswithColm
      @mindfulmomentswithColm Рік тому

I guess its efficiency, intelligence correlates with our connection in nature, nothing to do with "brain"- this word only is from meaning "mush". in china intelligence is called Qi/energy, its not local to the mind or atleast the seperate mind. have you heard of Tony Wright? he talks about fruit symbiosis and brain development with fruit having complex neurochemicals, though again not necessarily size, but knowledge of how we relate to nature helps us survive and thrive in whatever environment we imagine ourselves. then is the real question, who are we? I notice he doesn't talk about fruit and tender veggies/greens here

    • @stephenbeck5993
      @stephenbeck5993 Рік тому +6

He mentioned that those early humans with larger brains also had larger bodies, but failed to recognize that ratio of brain size to body size is more important than brain size alone.
I would expect my general biology college students to know better than to refer to chloroplasts as the mitochondria of plant cells. Plant cells have mitochondria as well as chloroplasts. Although chloroplasts have some features in common with mitochondria, their functions are very different.
His claim that the only way our bodies generate heat is by protons escaping the ETC rather than combining with oxygen means that there are no other exothermic reactions in human physiology that release heat. I find that to be a ridiculous claim. In that same discussion, he says that oxygen couples with a proton and makes ATP. This is at best a very sloppy and inaccurate explanation of the ETC. Oxygen + a proton + an electron that has been through the ETC form water, not ATP. Making ATP from ADP is like the ETC recharging a battery using energy in electrons from nutrient molecules. Then those electrons become part of water molecules that form as a biproduct (metabolic water).
There is some truth in this presentation that may be useful to some people, but for me is too rambling and confusing and too fraught with erratic information to be considered credible.

I guess I see it as some professionals, or pseudo professionals in their fields giving us an opinion. And it up to us to siffen through these opinions/options and find out what works for us. There is no way Tom could be critical of guests given that a lot of them have dedicated their lives to their research, and he has only tinkered with their book. It compacts alot of *possibly useful information into a short video. If one takes what they learn here as gospel, that's ignorance. But at least you're exposed to new information that you can now research and come up with your own ideas about. Its a starting point for a deeper look. And perhaps if you find consistencies across episodes, you may be able to make some deductions. But i agree the things learned on this channel should be fact checked, as the guests could run willy nilly, spewing B.S. and we wouldn't know any better. The Proper Dietary
      The Original Diet
      Chosen by the Creator
In order to know what are the best foods, we must study God’s original plan for man’s diet. He who created man and who understands his needs appointed Adam his food. “Behold,” He said, “I have given you every herb yielding seed,.... and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food.” Upon leaving Eden to gain his livelihood by tilling the earth under the curse of sin, man received permission to eat also “the herb of the field.”
Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect, that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet.

If you really want some good information on nutrition for health issues and fat loss, you might want to watch videos from Dr. Ken Berry. Berry's information literally saved my life and still helps me get rid of body fat, after a whole life of wrong diets and being hungry all the time. I just turned 60 recently and am peri menopausal, and I have a long list of diseases, that have a great impact on my life, mostly chronic pain, etc. A year ago, I wasn't able to walk 50 paces at once, I meanwhile go on hikes with my very active male Rottweiler puppy and I do competitive dog sports.
I of course mainly suffer from cPTSD, and my PCOS is of no big concern anymore. But Fibromyalgia, Polyneuropathy, several allergies, intracranial hypertension, begnine brain tumors, etc have gotten sooo much better. My headache is only light or gone totally. My shoulders don't ache at all anymore. I can sleep six hours every day

Basically the natural rhythm for him seems to be every second day he eats a lot and then on the next day, very little, just a little bit of here and there unless it's the best food that he likes. A lot of his info sounds as tho he has read "Eat Right For Your Blood Type" by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo, but he has taken his own path because of what he already knew because he is a surgeon.
So, I listen or read, then consider what I know then deside what to do. I may add his info to my knowledge.
I have been reading about nutrition since I was 15 yrs old. Im now 86. I have my problems which seem to be in the musculature of my health. Altho I have had a lot of brain fog. Feeling yucky after eating. Migraines. And whatever other crapoy feel that people have.
After I started following Dr D'Adamo my health improved dramatically. So, I'm not giving up on his book.
One thing that I have learned from Dr Gundam is that "Lectins" are located in the skins and seeds of plants. Which is helpful to me because I am a potato freak. Pasta can go jump as far as I'm concerned. Potatoes are a carbohydrate which means that I dont need to eat them. I just like greasy fries! Mashed Potatoes with lots of butter Nd green onions...like the Irish eat! So, I desided that my mission for food is to cook Irish recipes as gourmet as I can because aside from a lot of French recipes I think that Irish food tastes best!

But may I humbly submit that so many times during the interview, when you (Tom) would interrupt him, the train of thought he had been so beautifully delineating would be completely cut off and the discussion would sail off in a different direction. His points would be lost. It happened repeatedly; and while I certainly listened to the end, I was repeatedly frustrated by not getting all the amazing points he was trying to make. Just sayin’. Further, thank you for being respectful in this interview in not peppering your comments-normally not seen in interviews with women, thank you-with the F word. Didn't he also say that the longest lived people/bluezones don't eat much red meat. Well I know that in Okinawa (a blue zone) they raise their own pigs and they are not PETS and eat lots of meat and seafood. Also Hong Kong eats the most meat in the world and as well has the longest lived people in the entire world. So he kind of blew it. I am also open to debates and ideas that contradict what I do. I find recent info on lectins and phytic acid alarming and ask myself if I'm eating as healthily as I can. Dr Gundry doesn't seem to address cooking, which eliminates lectins. Many years ago I followed Leslie Kenton's Raw Food Diet, which emphasised the freshness and vitality of raw veg and pulses. Like Dr Gundry she was able to back up her arguments with data and studies. What is frustrating is that much information around diets seems contradictory and leaves us non-doctors wondering what the heck to eat.

It's not a short chain fatty acid, nor even a medium chain fatty acid (6 to 12 carbon atoms), it's a long chain fatty acid.

You need to be careful and telling people about itching and rashes because my niece had that and she ended up with the doctor telling her she had lymphoma cancer! So I think a disclaimer on here about rashes and itching would be good

I read something about this a few months ago on the Ask A Manager column. She did a PSA of sorts on end of life advocacy and mentioned her mother who came down with cancer and had a symptom of big time itching/rash.

Holy cow I've drank so much milk in my 40 years I should have had type 1 diabetes decades ago but never happened and I still drink milk to this day although a lot less than when I was younger. There was one point where I was going through like a half gallon or whole gallon in a day and that's back when they used rBGH and rBST hormones in dairy cattle.

I don't understand why people get ill with ANYTHING. I'm 73 years old and I have not had a cold, the flu, or even a headache since as far back as I can remember... probably areound the age of 15 when I actually had a headache in school... which I now attribute to a stuffy school room because when I left to go home, the headache eased. I have been on the ketogenic diet since BEFORE it ever became popular... most of my life and part of my teens... and I never have any problem with weight nor with illness at all. I've never had health insurance because I find that I don't need it. At the age of 15 I studied botany and herbalism, so if I ever find that I get ill in the future, I'll most likely use herbs to help with that but so far I have not even needed herbs of any kind.

I know your on the right track cause I've had far less problems with my back since I got off a close to vegetarian diet. I wish people would pay more attention to folk like you, rather than Doctors and others online and off, who don't have a clue.

Ever since you placed that first glass of water by your bedside, you were engineering your environment for success.Decluttering your space is another way to encourage your new way of life.Make every aspect of your environment contribute to your success, and at the very least, make sure it does not undermine your resolve. You deserve to see the garden of your life unfurl before your eyes.

Every One is different so what works for some people will not work for others, we are all so different. No One Diet is good for everyone, and we should all be Aware of This.
