As a Fire Emblem fan, I can confidently say Roy is expendable. In Japan both FE 6 & 7 came to Nintendo Switch Online, but they only did 7 overseas, so he's officially confirmed region locked for the foreseeable future.

Actually removing half is super hard. No easy way to do it. Removing Sheik Luigi Wario + Falco is wild though, no way those characters are ever getting removed from a smash game, too iconic.
Luigi and Wario are the only ones among those who are almost inconceivable to cut. Star Fox as a series is pretty much dead to where even Fox himself is viable for the chopping block and Sheik exists in 1 Zelda game, not counting spin-offs, as a disguise for Zelda, who's already there. Falco and Sheik can both be ditched and it wouldn't even be hard to justify.

I think a cool approach to a new smash game would be a tag mechanic when the characters are as pairs only so Mario Luigi would be as one character, dk and diddy kong another pair and link and zelda another pair where you swap characters with a trigger button. Other pairs could be lil mac and min min, pyra with mythra, cloud with sora, bowser with wario, peach with rosalina, fox and falco, pokemon tranier using charizard and pikachu, mewtwo with lucario, lucina with robin, captain olimar with captain falcon, pit with palutena, king k rool with king ddd, sonic with knuckles, megaman with ryu, banjo kazooie with duck hunt, marth with roy, the list goes on
I personally think all of the “smash only” characters like falcon and the space animals should have been dropped, they’re irrelevant to the landscape today outside of smash.

I might not exactly cut the Smash Ultimate roster in half, but here's some characters of who I would personally remove on my very own for the next Smash game (if there is one in the distant future). LOL Dr. Mario = Just combine/merge both of Dr. Mario's and Mario's move sets together. That way. Mario can revert back to being almost as strong as he originally was in Smash 64 back then. Young Link Pichu Byleth Robin Corrin Isabelle Combine all three Mii Fighters into being a single character. Combine Sheik/Zelda into being a single character. Combine Samus/Zero Suit Samus into being a single character. Dark Samus = She's pretty much the same exact character as Samus is. Dark Pit = He's pretty much the same exact character as Pit is. The four newcomers that I personally would add in Smash 6 would be Waluigi, Toad, Crash, and Spyro.
Hot take: I think Byleth should stay. They just have so many cool weapons and can do such cool things with them, not to mention 3 houses music slaps. I think the reason people were upset they were added wasn’t because they were boring but rather because they were the 8th FE character

Totally. The point of the game is to have iconic characters fighting each other though so it kinda goes both ways with the obvious over representation. I definitely agree that byleth is interesting but be honest, who would byleth replace?
My issue with Byleth is that her moves are all weapons but nearly all functionally a sword still. Up moves is a wide arcing sword attack despite being a whip like Corrin's up moves. The bow is ranged which is different but the spin bow around neutral air isn't that different from Corrin. The spear is just Corrin Lance The hammer is just Ike sword. The feels to much like a fusion of Corrin and Ike to me and her weapons don't feel as different as I think they should.

Awfully opinionated list, heavily swayed by your competitive perception of smash ultimate's meta. Wanting Lucario, Wario omitted and reworked "because they're unfair to play as or against" or removing fighting game characters •who add much-needed spice to the game• "because autoturnaround is weird", completely disregards smash bros's success as a franchise. Taking out the ice-climbers because they're "hard to use" or luigi because he's similar to Mario & Doc (even though they play absolutely differently) feels like you're just inventing reasons to dislike a character & bring controvery where controversy isn't needed Smash as a whole is meant to be played for fun and offers anyone who picks it up a wide array of cool characters they might resonate with, videogame icons that take them back, or certain chars with playstyles they find a fondness to playing w/. I think we should focus on redesigning characters that have a bad showcase and throw out the characters that do have a good (and controversial) showcase. Even if a character is technically good, people can be easily persuaded into throwing out certain characters because they aren't unique, are badly designed and/or were designed *corporately* by the developers, making a bad showcase for them. Had every copy and pasted character been more unique with their own references instead, people wouldn't lose interest in them.
Lucina should just be a skin for Marth. Tbh I really want Byleth to stay, since he is one of my mains. At the very least I hope his play style gets put into the next FE rep for the next game. I don't think Zelda and Sheik should be one character because it strips them of individuality and limits them. Plus I think it hurts potential moveset retooling. It also just makes no since for any other Zelda to transform outside of Melee and Brawl. I think Phantom should stay, but work in a Zelda moveset that's more refined. Especially since it also represents a proactive version of Zelda and something she actually did, it also has one game to show off something since it was a bad move in Smash 4. Daisy also shouldn't be cut if she's going to have her own moveset. She does represent a part of the franchise with spin offs and such, plus she was in Mario Wonder. Bowser Jr is relevant enough since he represents boss fights in Mario, as well as being Bowser's son. It also makes no sense to get rid of Luigi since he represents a lot.
Honestly? The idea to make Ganondorf follow Tears of the Kingdom could basically be done by making him a clone of Byleth instead of a clone of Captain Falcon, if you want to keep the Byleth moveset without the character. It's so uncanny a similarity Smash Byleth that I was having that thought the first time seeing how he fought in TotK. It was kinda distracting when I made that connection. ..I do like Byleth's inclusion, though. Three Houses did feel like a milestone in the series at least as significant as Awakening. (Gatekeeper would have been the more fitting rep, though. 😜)
I say toon link over young link. He was in three games, wind water, spirit tracks, and phantom menace. He’s visually different to anyone else in the cast. And I feel he has slightly more unique gameplay style than young link
Yeah, not being as huge a gamer feels like it shows, because a lot of his worse calls came from not remembering games/series: WarioWare, Luigi's Mansion, Toon Link has three Zelda titles, etc.
I'm gonna go against the Smash community and say we should keep Min Min. Firstly, she's from a newer Nintendo franchise, which aren't represented in Smash as often as older franchises. Secondly, her reveal for Fighter's Pack 2 gave hope for an Arms sequel, and Arms definitely deserves a sequel to flesh out the great world it's made. And thirdly, they could honestly just rework her moveset to be less toxic and zone-heavy, you wouldn't condemn a character like Sonic for having a bad moveset, and I love the Arms cast. Note: I haven't seen the video yet, I just wanted to get my thoughts out there.

If we’re halving the roster but new characters still get added, i’d drop shulk for greninja (having only gen 1 pokemon is weird) with the stipulation that noah and mio from XC3 get added the same way that the Aegis did

I think a cool approach to a new smash game would be a tag mechanic when the characters are as pairs only so Mario Luigi would be as one character, dk and diddy kong another pair and link and zelda another pair where you swap characters with a trigger button. Other pairs could be lil mac and min min, pyra with mythra, cloud with sora, bowser with wario, peach with rosalina, fox and falco, pokemon tranier using charizard and pikachu, mewtwo with lucario, lucina with robin, captain olimar with captain falcon, pit with palutena, king k rool with king ddd, sonic with knuckles, megaman with ryu, banjo kazooie with duck hunt, marth with roy, the list goes on
I personally think all of the “smash only” characters like falcon and the space animals should have been dropped, they’re irrelevant to the landscape today outside of smash.
so...the characters super relevant to smash's identity as a whole should be removed because they arent relevant anywhere else..? no disrespect meant but i cant get behind this. i get that removing half of the entire roster is hard, but there should be at least *some* specifically smash-relevant characters remaining, and the cap, fox, and puff come to mind for me personally.

I might not exactly cut the Smash Ultimate roster in half, but here's some characters of who I would personally remove on my very own for the next Smash game (if there is one in the distant future). LOL
Dr. Mario = Just combine/merge both of Dr. Mario's and Mario's move sets together. That way. Mario can revert back to being almost as strong as he originally was in Smash 64 back then.

Hot take: I think Byleth should stay. They just have so many cool weapons and can do such cool things with them, not to mention 3 houses music slaps. I think the reason people were upset they were added wasn’t because they were boring but rather because they were the 8th FE character
and not only were they the 8th FE character, they also rounded out the first batch of dlc characters that were (other than piranhaPlant which was added as a free bonus) entirely 3rd party. I think at that point pretty much everyone expected another 3rd party character, and not only were they not 3rd party, it was the 8th FE character. Tough times to be Byleth haha
Totally. The point of the game is to have iconic characters fighting each other though so it kinda goes both ways with the obvious over representation. I definitely agree that byleth is interesting but be honest, who would byleth replace?
My issue with Byleth is that her moves are all weapons but nearly all functionally a sword still.
Up moves is a wide arcing sword attack despite being a whip like Corrin's up moves.
The bow is ranged which is different but the spin bow around neutral air isn't that different from Corrin.
The spear is just Corrin Lance
The hammer is just Ike sword.
The feels to much like a fusion of Corrin and Ike to me and her weapons don't feel as different as I think they should.

Awfully opinionated list, heavily swayed by your competitive perception of smash ultimate's meta. Wanting Lucario, Wario omitted and reworked "because they're unfair to play as or against" or removing fighting game characters •who add much-needed spice to the game• "because autoturnaround is weird", completely disregards smash bros's success as a franchise. Taking out the ice-climbers because they're "hard to use" or luigi because he's similar to Mario & Doc (even though they play absolutely differently) feels like you're just inventing reasons to dislike a character & bring controvery where controversy isn't needed
Smash as a whole is meant to be played for fun and offers anyone who picks it up a wide array of cool characters they might resonate with, videogame icons that take them back, or certain chars with playstyles they find a fondness to playing w/. Sure, there's a competitive side to it, but if Nintendo only catered to pro players, you'd see a 1/10000th of their profit, sales & market share than otherwise

I think we should focus on redesigning characters that have a bad showcase and throw out the characters that do have a good (and controversial) showcase. Even if a character is technically good, people can be easily persuaded into throwing out certain characters because they aren't unique, are badly designed and/or were designed *corporately* by the developers, making a bad showcase for them.
Had every copy and pasted character been more unique with their own references instead, people wouldn't lose interest in them.
Lucina should just be a skin for Marth. Tbh I really want Byleth to stay, since he is one of my mains. At the very least I hope his play style gets put into the next FE rep for the next game.
I don't think Zelda and Sheik should be one character because it strips them of individuality and limits them. Plus I think it hurts potential moveset retooling. It also just makes no since for any other Zelda to transform outside of Melee and Brawl. I think Phantom should stay, but work in a Zelda moveset that's more refined. Especially since it also represents a proactive version of Zelda and something she actually did, it also has one game to show off something since it was a bad move in Smash 4.
Daisy also shouldn't be cut if she's going to have her own moveset. She does represent a part of the franchise with spin offs and such, plus she was in Mario Wonder. Bowser Jr is relevant enough since he represents boss fights in Mario, as well as being Bowser's son.
It also makes no sense to get rid of Luigi since he represents a lot.
Honestly? The idea to make Ganondorf follow Tears of the Kingdom could basically be done by making him a clone of Byleth instead of a clone of Captain Falcon, if you want to keep the Byleth moveset without the character. It's so uncanny a similarity Smash Byleth that I was having that thought the first time seeing how he fought in TotK. It was kinda distracting when I made that connection. ..I do like Byleth's inclusion, though. Three Houses did feel like a milestone in the series at least as significant as Awakening. (Gatekeeper would have been the more fitting rep, though. 😜)
I say toon link over young link. He was in three games, wind water, spirit tracks, and phantom menace. He’s visually different to anyone else in the cast. And I feel he has slightly more unique gameplay style than young link

I'm gonna go against the Smash community and say we should keep Min Min. Firstly, she's from a newer Nintendo franchise, which aren't represented in Smash as often as older franchises. Secondly, her reveal for Fighter's Pack 2 gave hope for an Arms sequel, and Arms definitely deserves a sequel to flesh out the great world it's made. And thirdly, they could honestly just rework her moveset to be less toxic and zone-heavy, you wouldn't condemn a character like Sonic for having a bad moveset, and I love the Arms cast.
Note: I haven't seen the video yet, I just wanted to get my thoughts out there.

So close to being just fine, but then you touched the og 12. I feel like there needs to be some sort of rule that has them off limits, because cutting them from the next Smash game feels wrong after they've been in every other one. Also, of the original 12, Luigi? I'd say swap him with Rosalina, and this roster cut down would make a bit more sense.
Personally i’d swap rosa, roy, joker, and krool for luigi, byleth, cloud, and wario.
I could also see swapping villager for isabelle but i’ve never played AC so i don’t know which is more recognizable to the franchise.
If we’re halving the roster but new characters still get added, i’d drop shulk for greninja (having only gen 1 pokemon is weird) with the stipulation that noah and mio from XC3 get added the same way that the Aegis did
