Two years ago I was struggling really bad financially after a long-term relationship breakup. I lost my apartment and had to give my dog up. I still love that dog and think about him. I completed my degree and work in law now and am much more financially stable. If possible, I would track down that dog and bring him back to me. 😢
This interview made me intrigued about heroin. I'd love to try it....as long as it isn't laced with that fentanyl or carfentanyl coming in from that shit hole China.

Many homeless people take drugs. They also have a much higher chance of being addicts. But also, being homeless is very hard, and very depressing. Why blame them for trying to blunt their pain? Why blame them for being in that situation at all? Maybe in a world where empty houses that are being held as an investment are lived in instead, or where we had decent mental health care, there wouldn't be homelessness at all? We can take a similar attitude towards a lot of drug use in fact. For example, the opioid crisis in the U.S., much of it is in midwestern states, where people are desperately poor, have no prospects, no support from the state, and honestly live in misery. No wonder they want to escape however they can. No wonder they take drugs. Might the need that people seem to have to get away from themselves and get away from the world be a problem not with how they choose to get away from the world but the world itself? Communism. You solve the problem with communism. On the whole, I think drugs are neutral. They're not inherently good or bad. They're made good or bad by the contexts in which they're taken. The world is made up of material. You can't point to an atom and tell me where its ethical qualities are stored, all ethical norms are relational, which isn't necessarily the same as crude relativism. If you legalise drugs, drugs do less harm.

But don’t take my word for it, look up the Vancouver heroin and safe injection site studies, Sweden’s penal system and record, Portugal and Uruguay’s full spectrum decriminalization and subsequent results, the comparison of dearth rates and addiction rates and poverty and all indicators of social problems state by state and country by country next to how harshly they penalize drug addiction. I remember few years back after my wife died, I was left alone with 3 kids. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got addicted to heroin. While he is self aware, I might have to agree with the reply above me that he seems to be in denial. This guy feels like he just doesn't want to quit heroin because it still feels good. But of course it feels good, that's the point of the drug, and these are among the signs of addiction. And when he starts to feel the effect of the drug grow weaker and weaker, he will take more and more of it. At that time - when his sanity will be fully taken away by the drug, it will be much harder to quit. You don't quit when it starts to become a burden. You quit while you can.
I hear you. As someone who works in helping with people who are challenged with addiction we are shifting the language from "a addict" to "a person challenged with addiction." Using the term "addict" is a label and an identity. We are hoping to bring awareness to identify someone as a "person who..."

I could go on forever but its late where I am, everything the guy said in the video is true. I'm now 31 days sober after (thankfully) only a year on it, living hell day in day out, absolute hell on earth. I am NEVER going back to that sort of existence. Since I've been sober I've met so many new friends, got a job, made a band, been going out doing normal things and just got a girlfriend also! :D

A lot of times heroin addicts can put up a facade like this of having their shit semi-together or being cogent/engaging, and then you actually start hanging out with them and the catastrophe really sinks in. Sadly, if you hung out with this dude when the video was shot, you'd probably quickly want to get away from him. That's if he isn't guilt tripping you for money, or doing things like make you drive him around while he boosts from stores and makes you serve as his getaway driver, or makes you randomly drive you out to some suburban movie theater parking lot where he meets one of his junky friends and they fucking shoot up in the car within full view of a busy intersection. Guess if I've been close friends with junkies.

However the legality of heroin likely didn't affect whether he actually became homeless, just his ability to get off the streets. edit: wanted to say that it's obvious that the reason methadone is legal and heroin isn't is because you can't profit off of addicts as much if you just used heroin for rehab. spineless rat pharma companies.

@@artdemjaha I guess what I meant was that his manner of speech was extremely collected, and it seemed like he put thought behind his every word. The way he spoke about his past and present was really matter-of-fact, and yeah you gotta be smart to have that deep of an understanding of communication. Just look at his mannerisms, and how he pauses to think before responses. The way he talked about his life being "on pause" at the moment because he still can't break a destructive habit - I still think about that shit almost every day when I'm having shit days and I feel like MY life is on pause. He's got a really clever way of relaying information, and you have to be smart to do that!
There’s a good chance that he’s too smart for his own good. Smart people have exceptional talent when it comes to rationalising things. Mix that ability with confirmation bias and you have a recipe for disaster. They become out of touch with reality because they’re too mental and often deny their intuitions or emotions through wilful ignorance and rationalisation.

People quit when they finally decide for themselves that they Want to quit. They have to want it. He'll only stop when things get so bad that stopping is what he truly wants. That is how addiction works and most addicts are very well aware of that.

I mean it's very grateful and humble but also shows - and I don't mean that by any means in a rude way - that Americans, and especially Californians often think that they have it very much better than the rest of the world. While that was for sure true in the 1960s and the following years, nowdays, honestly, I'm very sure 80% of the world population eats and lives better than a homeless man in California. Source? I have 78 days clean from heroin today!! I was introduced to opioids when I was 17 after my first knee surgery then again 1 year later when I had my 2nd knee surgery... I spiraled out from there & graduated to heroin a few years later bc of the price (like he said). On my 32nd birthday in July, I checked myself into detox/rehab and stayed for a couple months. I hit the "play" button on my life that had been "paused" for many years!! I'm a grateful, hopeful, & blessed recovering addict today!! Hopefully his found his way over the last 9 years!!! Thoughts & prayers to all the sick and suffering addicts out there today!!
NICE. It may sound hard to believe but if you keep heading in the right direction, the day will come when it doesn't even cross your mind anymore, EVER!!!! I have 12 clean years under my belt.
If I spoke to a homeless guy with this much honesty and rationality, I'd give him a few bucks in my pocket. He doesn't lie and beg - he's going through a crisis and needs a pause. Been there, done that, and I wish him the best.
Thats exactly how I felt the first year and a half being homeless and hooked on fentanyl . I didn't want to quit and I enjoyed the sense of freedom of not being tied down to a job, and obligations. But eventually you get sick of it, you will hit rock bottom and you will make very serious attempts to get clean with every ounce of will you have, and fall right back into it. Thats when people give up and completely let themselves go. And from there you will hit your bottom many times over, and its hell, literally hell. I never prayed to God before my heroin addiction but I cried for God to help me nearly every morning on the streets. I always knew I would get clean someday despite failing so many times, and I finally did manage to get clean, get a job save money and live a good life again but the suffering that had to take place to want to quit badly enough to make it, was so devastating it has changed me forever
@@knickie9 In order to answer that question fully I would need to write an essay, but this is a UA-cam comment section so ull keep it short. Being homeless sucks. For the most part, 85% of the time you're simply struggling to survive. I actually found the survival aspect fulfilling in a sense I liked it. But its not for most people. Where I lived it rained a lot in the winter, being a city in the rainforest. It was impossible to stay dry, even with a tent, "rain resistant" clothing and tarps. It rained so much everything would eventually be drenched and when the rain stopped it was never warm enough for your clothing dry. So with you would be cold, so I would spend about 2 or 3 hours each day at a library or using the hand dryers in public restrooms to dry my clothes and my shoes. That is just one of the many aspects I had to deal with being homeless, on top of just struggling to survive, I had to make between 50-80 dollars minimum per day to maintain my opioid addiction. I wish I could go into more detail but I'm keeping it short for the sake of being a sub comment on UA-cam.
What’s funny is the inversion of morality that’s taken place, Nietzsche called it the transvaluation of all value; “we” as a society have done this thing where we look to the lowest of the low, or the furthest down the societal ladder for inspiration. You should never be inspired by someone who is addicted to heroin and lives on the street, as obvious mistakes were made. This man has had agency throughout his whole life, he didn’t accidentally honeless and hooked. Find a father who works to provide for his family and maintains that, not a junkie.
Man I got my heart broken years ago, and I lost my dog last year. I would wish that dog back instead every single time. I respected when he said that. Not asking for any pity but the love a dog can give you is unconditional and simple. It's a beautiful thing
Good on him for accepting where he is at, not lying to himself about his addiction and goals. Sometimes in life, there are periods where you need to put your life on pause and just give in to what you want to do. Heroin is a big life-stealer, but he is at peace with it. This guy's positive outlook on life is contagious and inspirational. He quite literally is in the worst situation imaginable, a drug addict homeless on the streets, and still manages to see the good in his situation. Man, my heart goes out to those who are addicted. It's unrealistic and corny as hell, but I just wish everyone could be happy and healthy. This guy definitely seems like he's intelligent and realizes his own limitations, and I hope all these years later he's in a much better spot. I've never been addicted to any substance, and I know it doesn't mean much from a stranger, but if you suffer from addiction, keep up the good fight. You'll get through. When you hit rock bottom and still find ways to keep feeding the addiction, the shit you do to keep it going and justify it to yourself weighs on you. It is temporary I smoked crack and did heroin, was careful not to ever shoot the latter, because I'm aware of my personality, and therefore my susceptibility to it. He's not ready to quit, I was not ready to shoot. Now I'm clean and it's a non issue. It's all about the mindset.

My dad had the exact same mentality, "I can get it all back, I can kick it any time- just not ready yet." Twenty years later, still nothing- so an ischemic stroke decides to kick it for him. Goodbye half of your body. The point is, you'll NEVER be "ready to kick it". Just do it, do anything and everything: go cold or taper off, DIY or get help, and don't give up till you're quit... but that's just the first step. The next is you staying off every hour, every day. Fall down, get back up. That's the journey, just like everything else.

On the street yes unfortunately, but with a doctor and even the slightest bit of insurance they are less than a dollar a pill. so for 20 bucks you get 30-120 pills. THATS why its so dangerous. Once you start its easy cause you need a little. but by the end you are taking them 120 pills 3 days into the script. Heroin is soooooo cheap that once you get to that point you can as high as 10 oxycodons with a little bit of heroin.

I´m from Colombia, have only lived in the US a couple of times for 1 year. Even the most shitty Mac donalds burguer has a better nutrition value than the average lunch here which can be just a bowl of rice or lots of really fried cheap stuff. The water, the aqueduct and sewage, are way better in the US, the health services even for the homeless, the education, care during young age etc, are way better in the US. We still have children dying of hunguer here, even though a minority. I would agree the US is one of the worst in the developed world (not entirely true), lets say comprised of 750 million people, which now is just 10% of the population, so yes he made a mistake he lives and eats better than 90% of the population, not 95%.

Heroin itself is not really that damaging to your general health as long as it's somewhat pure with no bad cutting agents. The main problems are of societal, monetary and psychological nature.

I'd bet that you wouldn't be able to tell a vast majority of "junkies" apart from regular people. Only a minority lives on the streets, homeless, with no jobs. Look at other countries that have other drug policies and offer help to addicts. Their societal outcome is a whole lot different and their overall health is better as well. What I'm saying is: If we helped people solve their underlying issues that cause them to take drugs, in a lot of cases, their outcome will be totally different.

Two years ago I was struggling really bad financially after a long-term relationship breakup. I lost my apartment and had to give my dog up. I still love that dog and think about him. I completed my degree and work in law now and am much more financially stable. If possible, I would track down that dog and bring him back to me. 😢

Many homeless people take drugs. They also have a much higher chance of being addicts. But also, being homeless is very hard, and very depressing. Why blame them for trying to blunt their pain? Why blame them for being in that situation at all? Maybe in a world where empty houses that are being held as an investment are lived in instead, or where we had decent mental health care, there wouldn't be homelessness at all? We can take a similar attitude towards a lot of drug use in fact. For example, the opioid crisis in the U.S., much of it is in midwestern states, where people are desperately poor, have no prospects, no support from the state, and honestly live in misery. No wonder they want to escape however they can. No wonder they take drugs. Might the need that people seem to have to get away from themselves and get away from the world be a problem not with how they choose to get away from the world but the world itself? Communism. You solve the problem with communism.
On the whole, I think drugs are neutral. They're not inherently good or bad. They're made good or bad by the contexts in which they're taken. The world is made up of material. You can't point to an atom and tell me where its ethical qualities are stored, all ethical norms are relational, which isn't necessarily the same as crude relativism. If you legalise drugs, drugs do less harm.

But don’t take my word for it, look up the Vancouver heroin and safe injection site studies, Sweden’s penal system and record, Portugal and Uruguay’s full spectrum decriminalization and subsequent results, the comparison of dearth rates and addiction rates and poverty and all indicators of social problems state by state and country by country next to how harshly they penalize drug addiction. You might think you have the answer, but you don’t.

I was like an actor, hiding my addiction from everybody and pretending to be sober but I still don't get it how I managed to play myself like I did. I used to think I had to get my life together and then I would be ready to get sober but man, I got it all backwards right from the start. Looking back it was no surprise I never managed to get sober with that attitude and the fact that I thought I'd have to do it myself since it was me who got into to that downward spiral. I'm so fucking happy I finally scraped up the courage to tell the truth to my closest friends and kick the habit. Hope you are doing well too!

I remember few years back after my wife died, I was left alone with 3 kids. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got addicted to heroin. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment changed my life for better. I can proudly say i'm totally clean for 6 years and still counting. The self awareness I personally think is so amazing. A lot of addicts I've been around are so unaware of reality.
While he is self aware, I might have to agree with the reply above me that he seems to be in denial. This guy feels like he just doesn't want to quit heroin because it still feels good. But of course it feels good, that's the point of the drug, and these are among the signs of addiction. And when he starts to feel the effect of the drug grow weaker and weaker, he will take more and more of it. At that time - when his sanity will be fully taken away by the drug, it will be much harder to quit.
You don't quit when it starts to become a burden. You quit while you can.
I hear you. As someone who works in helping with people who are challenged with addiction we are shifting the language from "a addict" to "a person challenged with addiction." Using the term "addict" is a label and an identity. We are hoping to bring awareness to identify someone as a "person who..."

I'm now 31 days sober after (thankfully) only a year on it, living hell day in day out, absolute hell on earth. I am NEVER going back to that sort of existence. Since I've been sober I've met so many new friends, got a job, made a band, been going out doing normal things and just got a girlfriend also! :D

A lot of times heroin addicts can put up a facade like this of having their shit semi-together or being cogent/engaging, and then you actually start hanging out with them and the catastrophe really sinks in. Sadly, if you hung out with this dude when the video was shot, you'd probably quickly want to get away from him. That's if he isn't guilt tripping you for money, or doing things like make you drive him around while he boosts from stores and makes you serve as his getaway driver, or makes you randomly drive you out to some suburban movie theater parking lot where he meets one of his junky friends and they fucking shoot up in the car within full view of a busy intersection. Guess if I've been close friends with junkies.

@@artdemjaha I guess what I meant was that his manner of speech was extremely collected, and it seemed like he put thought behind his every word. The way he spoke about his past and present was really matter-of-fact, and yeah you gotta be smart to have that deep of an understanding of communication. Just look at his mannerisms, and how he pauses to think before responses.
The way he talked about his life being "on pause" at the moment because he still can't break a destructive habit - I still think about that shit almost every day when I'm having shit days and I feel like MY life is on pause. He's got a really clever way of relaying information, and you have to be smart to do that!
There’s a good chance that he’s too smart for his own good. Smart people have exceptional talent when it comes to rationalising things.
Mix that ability with confirmation bias and you have a recipe for disaster. They become out of touch with reality because they’re too mental and often deny their intuitions or emotions through wilful ignorance and rationalisation.

What are you even talking about. The guy very clearly said "I wouldn't be able to quit right now because I just don't want to" and that is the Perfect way to describe addiction. People quit when they finally decide for themselves that they Want to quit. They have to want it. And this guy made it clear multiple times that he is not there yet and he doesn't Want to stop so he knows he couldn't if he tried. He'll only stop when things get so bad that stopping is what he truly wants. That is how addiction works and most addicts are very well aware of that.

While that was for sure true in the 1960s and the following years, nowdays, honestly, I'm very sure 80% of the world population eats and lives better than a homeless man in California.
Source? I've visited maybe 20, 25 countries in my life and honestly, the poverty I saw in some parts of LA was easily worse than what I've seen in large parts of Asia or Eastern Europe these days.

I have 78 days clean from heroin today!! I was introduced to opioids when I was 17 after my first knee surgery then again 1 year later when I had my 2nd knee surgery... I spiraled out from there & graduated to heroin a few years later bc of the price (like he said). On my 32nd birthday in July, I checked myself into detox/rehab and stayed for a couple months. I hit the "play" button on my life that had been "paused" for many years!! I'm a grateful, hopeful, & blessed recovering addict today!! Hopefully his found his way over the last 9 years!!! Thoughts & prayers to all the sick and suffering addicts out there today!!

If I spoke to a homeless guy with this much honesty and rationality, I'd give him a few bucks in my pocket. He doesn't lie and beg - he's going through a crisis and needs a pause. Been there, done that, and I wish him the best.
Thats exactly how I felt the first year and a half being homeless and hooked on fentanyl . I didn't want to quit and I enjoyed the sense of freedom of not being tied down to a job, and obligations. But eventually you get sick of it, you will hit rock bottom and you will make very serious attempts to get clean with every ounce of will you have, and fall right back into it. Thats when people give up and completely let themselves go. And from there you will hit your bottom many times over, and its hell, literally hell. I never prayed to God before my heroin addiction but I cried for God to help me nearly every morning on the streets. I always knew I would get clean someday despite failing so many times, and I finally did manage to get clean, get a job save money and live a good life again but the suffering that had to take place to want to quit badly enough to make it, was so devastating it has changed me forever

@@knickie9 In order to answer that question fully I would need to write an essay, but this is a UA-cam comment section so ull keep it short. Being homeless sucks. For the most part, 85% of the time you're simply struggling to survive. I actually found the survival aspect fulfilling in a sense I liked it. But its not for most people. Where I lived it rained a lot in the winter, being a city in the rainforest. It was impossible to stay dry, even with a tent, "rain resistant" clothing and tarps. It rained so much everything would eventually be drenched and when the rain stopped it was never warm enough for your clothing dry. So with you would be cold, so I would spend about 2 or 3 hours each day at a library or using the hand dryers in public restrooms to dry my clothes and my shoes. That is just one of the many aspects I had to deal with being homeless, on top of just struggling to survive, I had to make between 50-80 dollars minimum per day to maintain my opioid addiction. I wish I could go into more detail but I'm keeping it short for the sake of being a sub comment on UA-cam.
In a weird way, this guy is an inspiration.

Sometimes in life, there are periods where you need to put your life on pause and just give in to what you want to do. Heroin is a big life-stealer, but he is at peace with it. When you hit rock bottom and still find ways to keep feeding the addiction, the shit you do to keep it going and justify it to yourself weighs on you. It is temporary I smoked crack and did heroin, was careful not to ever shoot the latter, because I'm aware of my personality, and therefore my susceptibility to it. He's not ready to quit, I was not ready to shoot. Now I'm clean and it's a non issue. It's all about the mindset.

My dad had the exact same mentality, "I can get it all back, I can kick it any time- just not ready yet." Twenty years later, still nothing- so an ischemic stroke decides to kick it for him. Goodbye half of your body. The point is, you'll NEVER be "ready to kick it". Just do it, do anything and everything: go cold or taper off, DIY or get help, and don't give up till you're quit... but that's just the first step. The next is you staying off every hour, every day. Fall down, get back up. That's the journey, just like everything else.

On the street yes unfortunately, but with a doctor and even the slightest bit of insurance they are less than a dollar a pill. so for 20 bucks you get 30-120 pills. THATS why its so dangerous. Once you start its easy cause you need a little. but by the end you are taking them 120 pills 3 days into the script. Heroin is soooooo cheap that once you get to that point you can as high as 10 oxycodons with a little bit of heroin.

I have 13 years of addiction under my belt and 2 years sober, and this man has more self awareness and is more humble then people I know with 5+ years sober. When he is ready to get clean he will, I hope it's sooner then later.
Being self aware doenst help much I think.

Actually, the US is one of the worst in the criteria you have just enlisted. 48 million American do not have access to sufficient and nutritious food and 1 out of 5 children go hungry at some point in a year. I am wondering (with all due respects, just out of curiosity) have you ever traveled outside the US?
I´m from Colombia, have only lived in the US a couple of times for 1 year. Even the most shitty Mac donalds burguer has a better nutrition value than the average lunch here which can be just a bowl of rice or lots of really fried cheap stuff. The water, the aqueduct and sewage, are way better in the US, the health services even for the homeless, the education, care during young age etc, are way better in the US. We still have children dying of hunguer here, even though a minority. I would agree the US is one of the worst in the developed world (not entirely true), lets say comprised of 750 million people, which now is just 10% of the population, so yes he made a mistake he lives and eats better than 90% of the population, not 95%.

I'd bet that you wouldn't be able to tell a vast majority of "junkies" apart from regular people. Only a minority lives on the streets, homeless, with no jobs. Look at other countries that have other drug policies and offer help to addicts. Their societal outcome is a whole lot different and their overall health is better as well.
What I'm saying is: If we helped people solve their underlying issues that cause them to take drugs, in a lot of cases, their outcome will be totally different.
