I think what has killed Christ-centered Christianity is the excessive focus on self that's so prevalent in Christianity today. Once you take your eyes off of Jesus, youre sunk.
The way you said your phrase is correct. If it's not Christ centered it's self-centered. But Christ always pointed away from himself to the Father. Before I became agnostic I started believing the "problem" seemed more that people didn't know the love of the Father...
People do NOT want to die to self these days, but they probably never did.
Very interesting. Are you saying we should be more spiritually focused on us (community) instead of our individual relationships with God. Tell me where religion I taught that way. I'd be into checking that out. It's the opposite of prosperity gospel, which I fined extremely flawed. It's like trickle down religion. The guy at the top gets rich, the rest of us get a warm fuzzy feeling.....if we're lucky. Joel Osteen really gets my dander up.
I'm a believer for years, and I believe NONE of us have the whole truth, but as far as I'm concerned I understand where Jay Bakker is coming from. He's right in many ways but also damage by his upbringing. IVE been damaged myself in many ways but this is why we need to lean on the Lord Jesus Christ. We are put here to love and be loved. God's job is to judge. We're all sinners and God already judged sin at the CROSS. There's no condemnation to those who are in Christ. My heart goes out to Jay B.

I respect this man very much. Such an open and honest discussion about his family, beliefs, and background. As a conservative evangelical Christian myself, I don’t agree with everything he says , but I believe he has more more honesty and integrity than what I see from many conservative and progressive Christians today. There is too much “do as I say, not as I do”, along with a lust for power internally in our churches and on the political stage today. There is not enough focus on Jesus, our own integrity and honesty that should come from our Faith, while identifying and fighting against our owns sins of hypocrisy. Just look at our current president’s (Trump) lack or morals and values. Adultery, lying, immoral behavior, and yet a majority of conservative Christians have compromised their own values to support such a person. Yet, the same people who now support Trump were irate, and rightfully so, when Clinton had his affairs and lied.
My Pastor always talks about the great falling away before the Jesus’ second coming, and I believe that this happening today. Too many people who say they are Believers, yet through their actions and words, they have fallen away and their faith has been compromised by the enemy.

@Bryon Stephens I prefer someone who is honest, has integrity, and has faith. Trump has none of these qualities. But, you are more than welcome to keep backing such a con man. You are naive, and you along with the rest of his cult are getting so played. If he wins the election, and it's a big if, people like you will be dropped by him faster than a hot potato. He will no longer need you and your votes anymore! All the support he gives Christians will be gone. Once a person outlives their usefulness, he dumps them. There are many examples of him doing this. This is a brilliant young man. I can remember growing up a scripture being used to discourage interracial marriage. The "be not thou unevenly yoked" verse. It wasn't until way later in life that I was taught it means to align yourself with people who share similar beliefs with you. It's absolutely insane some of the control tactics I witnessed in the southern Baptist church during the 1970s and early 80s.
Yes, the Bakkers son, Jay, outshines them all. He's quite the intellect and honesty is a breath of fresh air. I did like his mom though, was her name Tammy Bakker?

Jay should read his Bible and either believe it or reject it. Jesus said he was the only way, if one doesn’t believe this they can’t call themselves a Christian.

I understand exactly where he is. I grew up in the same type of culture and denomination, and I'm still deconstructing that dysfunctional foundation many years later. I, however, I am very sure of my faith in Jesus Christ, God's son, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I'm no longer wavering on these points. God bless Jay...he's been through so much!
rhomo hi... I'm also someone who has been through what you and Jay have...It took me a long time as well. Now looking back 40 yrs or so...we (Jay, you and me)are a by product of of our parents and people around us growing up, however not by any fault of ours did we know how to deal with the backlash we had to endure as a child or preteen. One thing I know is that no one is perfect. Beware of anyone who has all the answers, and has the voice of angel, if love, compassion, grace and forgiveness is not there then you know their agenda is for only for themselves. I pray that Jay will listen to the spirit within him. Keep asking questions, and he will be heard and led by the holy spirit and the true of Jesus.

@@jeanettesilhouette5678 We are out here in great abundance. Fundamentalist types are great at shutting down dialogue, intolerant of an conflicting view. I find faith to be deeply personal, have grown to accept that no one has all of the answers, and it's human to wonder about the possibilities. I reject much of what I was taught growing up, without rejecting their good intentions. I think it's so much easier for those who sign on to the package deal of religion. I have found a church community that is involved in community service. Find a church group that is feeding the hungry, helping people in real ways. Most cities have such churches. If the focus is on helping people, rather than fundraising, you'll find a community of like minded people. Steer clear of the evangelical churches, they are invested in wearing you down.
The comments here speak volumes about why Jay left the church he grew up in. Tough crowd! You don't have to agree with someone to love them.

One of the best discussions on Christianity I've ever heard. Larry mentioned what Billy Graham told him. That was an eye opener, as I respect Billy Graham. Jay was correct on the birthday of Jesus. It was not in December, his conception was, giving Christ a 9 month gestation and birth in September, and clarifying that life begins at CONCEPTION. Also references to it being harvest time at his birth would be end of summer, September. Anyway, this interview is great for awareness and if I was a preacher I would show this interview to my flock for discussion. It would be a great platform to start the learning by bringing out the Strongs Concordance and translate back on your own through the 7 languages before it was translated to English. To see the other interpretations and available words that could also be used is the way to decifering many true possible meanings of scripture. Translate for yourself and you will see what I mean. Get a concordance. Learn, don't just believe what your preacher says.

Yeah we all know that the birth of Jesus didn't actually fall on December 25th. The whole Christmas celebration is not even biblical, there is nothing in the Bible that tells us to celebrate the birth of christ. We are to be in Christ and living with him daily for all those who have accepted him and follow him, but there's nothing in the Bible that dictates the celebration of Jesus birth. You need to be a little more informed about what you're talking about.
I'm an atheist, meaning I don't believe in God. That being said, I like Jay Bakker's approach to Christianity and religion.

This is the thing, that Jesus came to earth to make Himself real and relatable to us, yet Hes the God of the universe. Yes, exactly right, and it's to bad that religious authorities have perverted religion to cultivate their own wealth and power. At the end of the day the relationship we have with God is the most deeply personal thing we can experience. Thar there are corrupt individuals, who will dictate what we say to God, for a fee, or steer us towards a political position is most troubling.

But the bigger question is does what you believe align with a Biblical world view from a New Covenant standpoint understanding the cross and the resurrection in the word of God as an extension from that place? What does God's word say?
"I believe in God but I don't know what God is"....most humble and truthful words to come out of a spiritual leaders mouth. If a leader trys to sell that they understand it all, WALK AWAY.

@@jackiepowell7513 Jackie, we can believe that scripture without fully understanding God or God's plan. That's where faith comes in. My mom is the most faithful person I know but if she doesn't understand something, she admits it. That's humility and I respect that. She never had to make something up or try to 'sell me' on it the way I have seen so many others do. I grew up in a home where the males were very different than my mom, I had a brother who literally used his hands to inflict pain if you didn't believe his translation of the scriptures.

Yes it’s true , god does say to love everyone because we are all sinners alike, but he expects us to turn away from all sin when we accept him in our hearts and choose to walk with him. It goes the same with the gays , yes love them ! Of course but he also expects them to turn away from there sinful behavior as well and to not stay in a homosexual relationship. That’s gods word and not me passing judgment on anyone.

This was one if not only the most inspirational videos about religion I have have every witness. I am a old man of 72 , and have been flipp flopping back and worth about religion. This interview had a profound effect on me. , especially with all Jay’s answers to all the questions he was asked. Jim andTammy did a over the top superb job raising this outstanding human being. I would like to know a little more about him , his church and his followers. I bet they are my kind of people.

I think there should be statues of Jim and Tammy made and put on Heritage for them. This land belonged to God and still does. They made a huge impact in good for many people. Also Tammy deserves a better grace/monument!

Jay, I think you are so brave. You've asked all the questions and expressed your concerns and doubts that we ALL have who have been taught a certain way. Where most do it in private out of some sort of fear [I guess], you have let everyone see your heart coming from an honest place. I think you get that from your mom. She was just always raw and real.

Say whatever you want about his family, but his mom (Tammy Faye) was much loved by the gay community even after the scandal subsided. She was relatable to us, wasn’t afraid or bothered by her quirkiness, and she was one of the first people in the public eye to hold a man dying of AIDS in the 80s and say “your life mattered and you are loved even now.”

Yes he is honest which is so appealing does not profess to be a Christian in fact just the opposite he says he doesn’t believe or know God so he just prays to ‘someone above’ he is only 60% convinced there is only one God. The bible does NOT say that. There r many conditions that Christ laid down in the Word… take up His cross and follow Him. The truth is hidden from the world that’s perishing. Had him on my radio show about 10 years ago. Felt so sorry for him. He's very honest, but very confused, and has drawn a lot of confused people to himself. His shallow understanding of the Bible and history is remarkable. He is so jaded, but it's cool to be jaded and skeptical today. So he revels in the commonality of it all

Fundamentalism has been a very divisive movement in modern Christianity. I do not accept that a good and kind person, who leads a righteous life would be penalized with eternal Damnation. Belief otherwise seems very ego driven. God loves all of his children equally.
