    I'm from Romania and as a romanian I can tell you that romanian people have nothing against foreigners or black people. But, that being said, you will probably get a lot of stares because it is very unusual to see a black person in Romania, even in big cities like Bucharest. Tourists were not interested in visiting Romania before :)) I'm sure people are really curious about you and that's why they are staring, but they don't mean any harm. (I used to stare at foreigners too when I was younger because I was so curious about them and then I heard them say it bothers them - on the internet - so now I intentionally try NOT to stare when I see them on the street, but I guess not a lot of people realize that they make you feel uncomfortable when they stare at you).Most young people speak good English , maybe you should try speaking to some of them like you did in Moldova :)

    I’ve been travelling to Romania since I was young. It’s a brilliant country and it’s so lovely to do activities and all of that. It’s a shame not many people have good views of it and it really annoys me because I guarantee they’ve never been nor met Romanians
    Great video and reviews are accurate to how I see it (besides the McDonalds. I love it over there)

    Romania is chill AF. Sorry you had kind of a weird experience there. Romanians can come across as a very closed and serious people, but all you need is to get to know them a bit better. Once you find your bearings and you hook up with a clique, they can be some of the most wonderful people to hang with. The countryside is even chiller. Try getting out of Bucharest for a bit and explore some of the countryside. Romania is an awesome place to visit. And I am American (but I have a ton of Romanian friends).

    Maybe they were staring at you because you were vlogging. They might have wondered if you are a celebrity or a crazy guy. Vlogging is not a common thing in Romania. And also there's a popular saying that people who talk alone are usually crazy.

    • @tralalalashalalal
      @tralalalashalalal 4 роки тому +5

      @Chris Ayala almost no black people. Bigger cities people will just maybe stare, but with no ill intent. in villages, where people have never seen a black person, you might cause a traffic accident

    • @tralalalashalalal
      @tralalalashalalal 4 роки тому +3

      @Chris Ayala Again, out of curiosity. There is a sort of ingrained racism, but not in the US sense. Romanians just dont know much about black people. During communist times a few African nations could send kids to college in Romania. So a big part of the few black people in Romania are those that stayed and started families here. Bottom line is, with the exception of a few bigger, college towns, no black people anywhere.

    • @tralalalashalalal
      @tralalalashalalal 4 роки тому

      Chris Ayala you would clean out! Patente might have issues. But not out of racism per say but more out of not knowing and a sort of xenophobia. Or they might be racist. You never know. But you will clean out with chicks over here. Trust me!

    • @tralalalashalalal
      @tralalalashalalal 4 роки тому

      @Chris Ayala Well, depends on the age area you are looking for. Bucharest has a good party scene with a lot of like hipster clubs, bars and restaurants. I would recommend coming during the summer so you can go for a couple of day at the seaside. It's around 3 hours drive or train from bucharest. Mamaia there is the posh scene with the expensive clubs and such and i would also recommend vama veche for the seaside hippie scene. Other cities you should visit are Brasov, Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca. Would be a good idea to get a dating app like Tinder and see who you can match with before getting here.

  • @wintersonnet
    @wintersonnet 3 роки тому +1

    This country can have a different atmosphere depending on the area. I live in the west. People in Transilvania are generally more chill than the people down south. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule but my colleagues from offices in other countries said they felt very welcome and comfortable when they visited Cluj and they are people from various nationalities, ethnicities, and races. One particular colleague who is Vietnamese American keeps saying he's very tempted to move from the London office to the Cluj one. Bucharest is a great place in many ways but maybe a little rougher around the edges and there are few things to be wary of compared to the rest of the country. Some travelers have experienced nothing but great things in Bucharest but I'm, not that familiar with the city to understand its ins and outs.
    If you're not discouraged from visiting again, maybe try Brasov, Cluj, Sibiu next time. I'm sure you would be getting stares here too, though most of them harmless/benevolent. I think people tend to stare simply because you're a foreigner and Romanians are not used to foreigners showing an interest. Even I personally can't help looking up briefly when I hear someone speaking another language or doesn't look local even though I've interacted with folks from many backgrounds, I'm like another visitor in our little city, cool, I wonder what brings them here. Romania has only recently become a bit more popular as a travel destination. Before most visitors were either for business or missionary work so maybe it's still a matter of processing the unexpected influx of tourists. Though not sure about the WTF stares. They might be related to seeing you talk to the camera for vlogging. Not as prevalent here.
    There are a lot of people, especially on the younger side, who welcome multiculturalism, and I hope the general mentality will improve and people moving or traveling here will feel more comfortable in the future.
    I noticed a few right-wing trolls in the comments section. They're very vocal but I don't think they're representative of this country. Sadly enough, I think most Eastern Europeans have them.

    I'm a black man and I get it I used to live in South Korea for a year but most people there speak English especially in the cities so the stares weren't as bad since I could communicate a little with the locals. I might be curious about you and want to change a few words with you (friendly ones since they are from other cuIture.. so for me its rather that I might have an interesting conversation with them). My theory about the stares: They probably think you have a lot of guts coming there. I presume there are also skinheads/neonazis who really don't like black people. I'm also pretty sure that Romania just doesn't get visited by black people in general so it's a double whammy for them, maybe even triple because you got dreads. So I think it aren't hate stares but more the kind of stares a european soccer hooligan would get if he would come dressed in full outfit in the city of the opposing team (that doesn't get you killed most often, but one just does not expect it).

Act cool be aware that people are staring but don't let it affect you, because seriously most people don't mean anything negative by a stare and they just don't realize that the person may feel uncomfortable

    Hey bro, I'm romanian and I'll try to explain the stares. Romanians have a very bad opinion about their country. When they see a black guy, they think to themselves "What the fuck is he doing here?" but not particularly in a bad way towards you like you're not welcome, it's more like "what the fuck is he doing here in our shitty country". Also a lot of romanians are racist towards gypsies but a romanian can tell the difference between a black/brown guy and a gypsy, and most don't have a problem with other races, gypsyes being the exception. Being a black guy plus the dreads basically makes you more rare than a charizard in eastern europe lol. Also people casually vlogging in public is pretty unusual in Romania so far, so people stare at that no matter how you look.

  • @LewChain
    @LewChain 3 роки тому

    Bucharest may feel a bit rough when it come to socials - remember it's still more Eastern, though people mainly look at you because they're just curious, but you shouldn't be in trouble trust me, even in Bucharest.
    But yeah, Romanians can stare with no reluctance. At the same time, they're very frank with you and they'll tell you what they think.
    And also at the same time if you asked for help, they'll just jump out for you and you will be helped all the way.
    They're also so friendly that you can make lasting friendships. It just takes a bit of work - remember Romania escaped 50 years of extreme authoritarian communism not long ago.
    You should see Timisoara (I can take you out for a drink or two, haha), also Sibiu is marvelous, Cluj is nice and perhaps Brasov if you like huge pedestrian streets and big hills. Spring is ideal in Romania.
    Unfortunately you are not too lucky with the food here but there are places for you as well certainly. Cheers!
    PS: They also stared at me in Bucharest by the way, and yes I do look more Turkish but barely different from most Romanians. I was just dressed more careless in regards to the "balkan" trends that a man should wear, you know. It's all about curiosity.

    Bro, you got stared at simply because to them, you look cool, you have cool hair, and, yes, you are black! Nothing to do with racism, man! It is still a novelty to see black people in Romania! They have never talked to a black person, it is something exciting and new! They check out your skin texture, hair, clothes! There is still an aura of "wow" when they see a black person! Imagine a white dude going to an African country.... Not talking about South Africa, but somewhere where whites are pretty rare! I am sorry you felt awkward and uncomfortable, but I hope, my explanation helped you understand! Good man!

    From what I see from your video I think that you are taller than the average romanian plus you are a foreigner (not in a bad way), this is probably why people stared at you like that, for us you are just a really tall person and a foreigner in the same time =)))

    Let me tell you something jermaine, I’m not black (actually about as white as you can get) but Romania is one of the poorest countries in the Eu. A lot of Romanians have moved to other countries like the UK or Germany for work, so not a lot of people go there. I went and I remember going through immigration at the airport and the guy I got was like “why the f are you here?” Not “okay where are you going to be working illegally?” But “do you know where you are? What possibly could be of interest here?” They’re not really used to a lot of foreigners, epically ones who aren’t from the EU

      Bitch, EU doesn't contain Europe! You must be already developed to be included in EU. Romania already passed Croatia for instance, it's very similar to Hungary now. Still miles ahead from most of the neighbours, especially those outside the EU like Serbia and Ukraine.

    You should go to Vegan Mob at Lake Merritt in Oakland.

    What is the vegan restaurant that you are talking about? I live in Bucharest and I'm just curious. I'm also vegan, as a black person living here for almost 7 years. I can also say people stare a lot. But not so much now, there are many more foreigners now. But it's SO uncomfortable, I mean people just literally stop walking and stare. Maybe I'm just used to it now, I'm not sure.

    They’re curious about you don’t worry. They’re also surprised to see foreigners because they don’t have so many.

    Usually, these idiots only bark online and when I doxed one guy who started being funny he blocked me but I know now who he is and where he lives. You will find idiots everywhere and you must ignore them. Many Romanians (men and women) are in interracial relationships so just ignore mean comments.
