Generally it's not OK to take photos in there because the flash damages the priceless paintings. So the fee is just to discourage most people from taking photos.
Taking a picture or video in most Orthodox temples is forbidden and you may have been fined, not charged.
00:17 - Ivan Vazov National Theater (leading theater);
01:27 - on the left - Central Post, right - Ministry of Transport;
02:33 - Vitosha blvd. - central place for foreign companies' shops;
02:46 - National Palace of Culture, built in 1980/ during communism;
04:49 Russian Church;
04:52 House of the Army;
05:02 - Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral, biggest on the Balkans;
11:53 - Banya Bashi Mosque;
13:00 - History museum, former Turkish bath used as the city's public baths until 1986.
In the cathedrals in the West they charge you to enter.Here is the same thing with the photos.The difference is that you can go and pray without having to pay.You pay only if you take photos/videos whereas in the western world they charge you to enter.
They do not charge for any video/picture taking. However, using cameras and recording inside churches and cathedrals in Bulgaria is forbidden and is considered as a disrespectful act. Someone probably just saw an opportunity to make an extra dollar or two from you and took advantage of the situation
Actually Alexander Nevsky does have a set price, it’s advertised in the entrance. Last time I went in last summer it was 10bgn.
@@nwalsh1 It's forbidden to take pictures in churches. I don't know how the cathedral circumvents that, but I think it's wrong and it should not be allowed.
Taxing visitors is not something that is weird, because if you enter such an establishment you are going to pay for overpriced candles anyways...
You have to visit Plovdiv in Bulgaria is soo cool there
12:32. the former central bath. a typical example of Bulgarian cessionist style. now part of it has been converted to a museum but we hope that the original thermal baths will be restored and put to use. there are water fountains on the same, so you can drink the mineral water freely.
the yellow building behind the mosque, 30 or 40 years ago, was a public bath with the hot mineral water from underground. today, it is Sofia Museum.
Love you bro, be safe. 💯🙏😎 🔥🔥🔥
Since amerikkka is the safest
The short-people shop is called “klek-shop” (duck-shop). They are fairly common here in Bulgaria:)
Awesome. Really enjoy your perspective and honest opinion about Sofia. It's truly a great city...of course needing improvements like any other city, but a sincere joy to visit and to live.
the charge is only for tourists, if you're in the church just to pray, it's free, if you're visiting, it's a fee like in a museum.
Thank you! Nice video.
Thank you. This video is so nice !! Happy travel to you my friend !
Thanks for sharing your experience. I wish I could travel.
That train station is beautiful.
Poor Jermaine you were so excited to go into the cathedral and you realize they charge for it that was funny😂😂
He was fined, not charged. The icons that are inside are extremely valuable and old, and camera flashes damage their colors.
it's not a charge, you were fined for filming. I'm pretty sure there's a sign at the door that says NO FILMING with a camera crossed with a line...
Yo, yo, yo Jermaine I agree it's not cool to give a set charge price to video/picture taking in a church. Keep great free styling because another day, another adventure is on the way 🚀.
its not a price its a fine. You can check outher youtubers, its forbiden to take a picture or video in most churches.
I'm not mad about charging for photos. Southwark Cathedral does it too but only for real cameras not phones. the idea works out well because tourists who are not really into photography put their cameras away and people who are into it are able to take pictures without too many people in your way
Have a good trip!
I was in Sofia back in August and I didn’t even know you had to pay to take photos inside. I probably took like a few solid pics inside 😂
Dude, you're hella dope! Stay positive ❤
love love love this!
i love how he loves everything... all the stores are closed and its a ghost town... i love that
Welcome to Bulgaria!
4:39 Squat Shops? By the way them African pants look really cool.!
The charge at the Church is a donation to the church FYI.
A charge is not the same thing as a donation lol. When you donate you give willingly
@@thebaddest3452 Yes it is in this case. If you want to take photos... you need to donate. End of story, otherwise we don't need you taking pictures of the Church inside, its that simple. The picture will last forever, but the structure won't... so keep that in mind.
Wow. How did you get that shot of you sauntering down the alley? So arty. Was there another cameraman around?
2:23 Manowar were in Israel as a part of this tour, my dad and I went to this concert!
We went when they were in Sofia, like two weeks after this video /it says on the poster probably, I dont remember tho, I think it says 26 of June tho / xD
the museum at the end was the city bath long time ago
I see you drinking kamenitza and astika, how do you like the bg beer?
they charge at other places to...YES
la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona charges to enter but that is a very different situation
Why do they charge?
Donna Grindle-Ortiz Its still being built so the admission fee goes toward the construction budget (25 Million euros annually). The fee also includes an audio guide, but there is no way to just enter for free
Abrupt ending, camera run out of juice or something??
Here's some history you may or may not find interesting. During WW2, the Bulgarian govt protected the Jewish people as long as possible from Nazi deportations. The Romanians and Ukrainians,generally, were as vicious as the Germans. You can almost pick up on those attitudes still today. Who knows what accounts for the difference, but Bulgaria IS different.
Hope your bus ride is smooth , looking forward to your next stop! we love you namaste
Don't miss out the fact that the Bulgarians deported almost all of the Jews from occupied Macedonia though... it ain't that clear cut.
@@vlaknest this part was under germany and these jews were never bulgarian citizens! so bulgaria deported nobody bulgarian.and where where the macedonians? did anyone tried to protect these jews? no...in bulgaria it was certain individuals and the church that stopped the deportations....where were the Macedonians and the Greeks?
@@RositsaPetrovarjp7 Stop lying, Macedonia was under Bulgarian occupation and you can't revise that. And the Macedonians were fighting together with the Jews against you guys, I even linked it in Bulgarian. Face it, you were the baddies. bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%98%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%BA_%D0%A1%D0%B8%D0%BE%D0%BD
@@vlaknest Actually you are not completely right either!The westernmost parts of Macedonia were occupied by the fascist Kingdom of Italy.
Most of central Macednia was in hands of Collaborationist organizations !!! Only Vardar Macedonia was occupied by Bulgaria. It is estimated that almost 3000 jews were deported by Bulgaria, all of which held no Bulgarian nationality and couldn't be saved under the pretence of being Bulgarian citizens.
encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/film/deportation-of-jews-from-bulgarian-occupied-macedonia
Also - Fearing an invasion of the World War II Axis Powers, Regent Prince Paul of Yugoslavia signed the Tripartite Pact on 25 March 1941, pledging cooperation with the Axis. He was overthrown in coup d'etat. At that point Germans entered and conquered Yugoslavia. It is long been desputed that although Bulgaria occupied Vardar Macedonia, the actuall goverment were in the hands of the Germans. Also - a lot of Bulgarians and Bulgarian macedonians/ yes there were macedonians that though they are from bulgarian heritage/ fought against both German and Bulgarian nazi forces. And last - in that period of time Bulgaria is the only country in Europe that dared and managed to pull this off!!!! Saving its jews!!!!
@@vlaknest hahahahahahahahahahaahah I started laughing when you said that we are the baddies, first of all I don't care what your complaints are all about, even if it's part of history as well as the other
The charge in so many places... I don't know what countries you've been to.
i have been to so many churches around the world where they charge you to just enter! so i dont see why you are complaining. you should travel more! and the donation is buying candles!
Rositsa Petrova yup especially to take a pic it’s definitely normal
The business of religion. By the by religion is man made for the most by those who seek to rule over man. That is not how relationship works religion without relationship is a false religion. If you have ears to hear
You wanna make money taking video but you don't wanna invest 5 euro
Im use to that churches take entrance fees like st Pauls cathedral in London or St Isacs cathedral in St Petersburg. But yup the rude monk who collects the 10 BGN (6 US$) isnt my cup of tea either. And yeah for Sofia its expensive, - the zoo and several museus are cheaper
Mosque is one place where you will always find crowd around it.
yes. all kind of imigrant trash. why find a job if you can pray 5 times a day
I like to know exactly where to come - Jermaine Ellis
first i think its real dumb they charge for a photo in the church, but the most interesting thing is i watch most videos that tourists upload about their stay in sofia, and you're the first person ive ever seen pay it, glad someone filmed it
dumb and church are usually two things who have a lot in common ;)
you can only find grafitti on old buildings
Seems like a family City
at 7:02 the building behind you contains a necropolis, it's under the ground floor and you can enter for free i think? i can't remember, but you missed some spooky shit, it's pretty cool, not many people know about it
the cathedral is not just a House Of God, but also a museum/historic building. it doesnt get enough money from the government for repairs, so it has to charge for vids. as you were leaving, at the 7th min of this video, u passed by a brown building, which is more than 2000 years old, it has an actual necropolis underneath
The sinagouge is the oldest in Europe btw
Pretty city. Wish our cities in U.S.A. could be that clean. I liked the architecture of the places of worship and the photos from around the world.
Visit Indian cities then you will really appreciate US cities.
its clean only in the turists areas. mainly the center
Aesthetically Sofia doesn't excite me too much it kinda looks like my home country
For the regular tourist it's just a modern eastern european city, nothing that special. But for historians, architects and people with similar professions is unique and very rich. You just need to be interested in that kind of stuff and to know what you are looking at.
@@22Varg Yeah I guess I'm more of a countryside type of person. For instance, Bansko seems like a cool place to visit.
@@JoseSilva-nf2xs Me too. And i was raised in Sofia but love the mountains. I live in the mountains now but I hate places everyone goes to. I like places mostly never visited and not on the map as a hot spot. Just the way i like it.
In Italy is forbidden! From my experience in Milano and Venice.
I feel the same way about this church charging for video or photo as I do about the Uber situation, if you don't like it... Leave lol 🤣
If you ever return go to "Studentski grad" in Sofia, there are some cool chicks, night clubs and a lot of fun things to do, by the way you weren't in night club there if you don't get drunk
Wish you luck
This episode is reminiscent of Somewhere Street!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
12:05 The synagogue, the musk and the church of Saint Sofia are just a block away from each other, and all three are visable from a point not far away from you. This is one of a few places that bring religions so close to each other.
Well, churches are after all for praying and not for taking instagram photos or videos.
A-man
Does he speak any foreign language?
they tried to charge me n my friend at a temple in mountains of Chaing Mai, Thailand but we noticed we could seek around the back to get in for free! Also, They attempted to charge us for a theme park style photo which we never agreed to take lol.
Jermaine you look 😎 cool.
The walls are with ancient art and photos and stuff make damage

Hakimah Zafirah Ameenah Muhammad Phd ND Someday it will be a church :) Don’t worry
It is forbiden to take pictures in churches , mayby thats why they charge you.Its temple of faith and people go there to calm themself and pray so i think thats the reason, or its good old church greed .....
Klek shop :D
Lol that's funny
@4:40 those are called midget markets
haha, the bulgarian term is "klek-shop", from kleknal, ie squatted.
Stores for short people
like Bulgarian
yes every church collects donations at the end of many services.... or in some other way. i dont agree with it but its not unique. it is off putting for sure tho. some straight up charge admission fee up front, others straight up ban photography (many monasteries)
jeramie whats up bro? come again just write me
I hope this video does not have any inappropriate gay sex stories.
It may
Jermaine Ellis It didn’t so I’m happy. One love and positive energy. Keep enjoying life.
Hmm bro I wonder where are you going now. Lol I should win the first comment price.
5:20 that’s typical Neo-Byzantine architecture
11:55 typical Turkish mosque, probably from Ottoman era
Yes it is from the Ottoman era
They are 4 churches, St Nevski (where they fined him), the mosque, the catolic chirch and synagogue placed on a crost its named Square of Toleranse.
there are no turkish mosques in bulgaria. banya bashi is from ottoman times, build by a Christian convert Mimar Sinan, imitating Roman architecture. Turkey exists since 1923, so this mosque has nothing to do with your country!
Rositsa Petrova Ottoman is just name of the royal family, that period was Turkish imperial times. Turkish Empire is definitely influenced by Eastern Roman Empire.
Christianity or Islam, who cares desert religions! Mimar Sinan worked for Turkish Empire. He influenced by Eastern Roman technology and style. The fun fact even your country is named by a Tengrist Turkic tribe who ruled Bulgaria. So stop disgusting with your ignorant comments
@@burakoz95 nope. i know they brsineash you in turkey but your father Ataturk.said that he liberated the turkish people from the Ottoman Empire. most of the Ottoman empire leaders were not Turks neither were the janissaries.what matter was thw millet, no the ethnicity. the language used was Ottoman, not Turkish. Sinan himself was not Turkish. what he built was Roman achitrcture. so this mosque is an example of Roman architecture which he popularized. this is why all your mosques are copies of his. many mosques in Bulgaria were built with stones of Bulgarian palaces or were actual churches converted in mosques. .
I'm glad you escaped Romania. Those rodent people would rob you of everything and anything. I really feared for you in Romania.
Natalie Thomas Bulgaria is same also
@@burakoz95 safearound.com/danger-rankings/ Bulgaria is 28th safest country in the world meanwhile Turkey is 108th on the list. Also I see a lot of negative comments by you about Bulgaria so you surely hate our country for no reason.
Natalie Thomas why you speak about Romania like that? Both country are very nice with friendly people.
Мартин Божидаров I visited Bulgaria. We had an accident in Sofia. A car that was following us crashed to our car and we waited to police about 2 hours. Bulgaria also has gypsies so that’s why Bulgaria is not safe enough. I don’t have any problem with Bulgarians.
If you visit eastern part of Turkey, there’s dangerous. There’s also located to border of middle eastern countries. This is why Turkey ranked low. If you visit Edirne, Ankara, Antalya or Izmir, there are safer than Bulgaria.
@@burakoz95 no. turkey is
way worse
Go back to south Africa its beautiful
06:14 now you know why a lot of young Bulgarians are not that religious xD
To me it is a criminal act for one to be charged some money to take pictures or video in the church.it is crazy 😝
I like your channel. Because u give experience as a black perspective view. But u should really learn the history before u get into the place. The church is a memorial for Russians solider who died for liberate Bulgaria. Of course no camera allowed inside the church. U should expect to pay. It’s not like America, most places is free
What sort of money hungry country has churches charging for tours? God's prayer power,salvation and love are free.
They don't charge for entrance. Just in Bulgaria taking pictures in cathedrals and churches is disrespectful
It is not that simple. Problem comes from the dual nature of this cathedral. It is tourist spot (museum), but also largest and most important church in the country. They don't want to put entrance fee, because it is not OK for everyday worshipers - I even think, that this is forbidden by Bulgarian church rules, but from other side, this cathedral is also tourist attraction. So they decided to put fee for taking pictures - local worshipers doesn't even think about taking pictures, and travelers pay if they want to use their photos. Compared to Western Europe museums, fee of 10 BGN = 5 EUR =6 USD is not that big, to be honest.
maybe the sort that has a lot of ignorant tourists who go there to take pictures for their Instagram stories and disrupt the people who are there to actually pray? 🙄
Have you never heard that the world has entered the church. Capitalism is the new socialism watchword in places like Bulgaria and Russia, the new haven of the wealthy. Gives new meaning to 'tourist trap' 😂
Do you differentiate between a fine and a fee?
I think its crazy for a church to charge to take a picture of the place..its bad enough they charge to worship
they don't charge to worship, they charge to take pictures because it's a historical site and the flashes are damaging to the murals so it's more of a discouragement. it's also intrusive to people who go there to actually pray. in some places, it's outright forbidden to film and take pictures of any kind.
@@user-bn1lb8ey9v The last time I heard, churches DO charge tithes. Has this changed?
@@joybrooks564 i couldn't tell you, i'm not religious but google says: "The Eastern Orthodox churches never accepted the idea of tithes, and Orthodox church members have never paid them." all i can tell you is that in Bulgaria it's customary to buy candles to light in the church and that money serves as a donation to the church. that's it. regular churches don't have an entrance fee and the only ones who might have one are the ones with historical value because they also serve as a museum.
@@user-bn1lb8ey9v I’m not talking about an entrance fee. When you’re sitting there, during the service, they pass the plate a couple times
@@joybrooks564 i don't know if they do that here
ye. I think its bullshit to charge you for that. shame
I would not pay to see inside the house of God.I would have just turned around and kept it moving.
They must not be getting much offering,are tiding.Sad!
The only churches that charge you here are those that no longer function as such on account of being historic and cultural sites like Boyana Church in Sofia, which is from the 11th century. No church in Bulgaria would ever charge you for entering. That kinda defeats the purpose. Some churches like Alexander Nevski in the video (which is the biggest in Bulgaria) only charge for taking pictures, can't tell you why, maybe it's for security reasons, maybe it's to protect the icons, I don't know.
That American Embassy McDonald joke is becoming very cringe and unfunny.
Don’t you have your own native food that u know or like?why always talking about Chinese food 🥘.or ain’t u proud of ur own native food?
I've never heard of being "proud" of food. What's wrong with eating what you like? The man had a taste for Chinese food. Don't hate ... appreciate. He's a man traveling the world and living his best life.
I think there could be 2 reasons to why they charged you.
1. This is Bulgaria, it is a poor country. People will charge you for things that you shouldn't be charged for, just to get some extra money.
2. Whoever charged you, maybe realized that you were a torist + that you didn't speak Bulgarian, so they took advantage of that.
Btw I just discovered your channel, and I like your content! Have a nice day :)
Mister, in Bulgaria everyone has own home, either apartment or house, 50% of people have more than one, 90% of people have cars, mortgage is unknown word. As for the charge - this is not a simple church, it contains works of art, which need to be maintained, hence the charge. I recommend you visit it before writing nonsense, and btw Boris Hristov sang there, learn about him.
