Very frustrated with HR's career counselors - they don't prepare grads well enough to find work after the Boot Camp. Most places will still demand a traditional 4 year degree and tech companies have been laying off their workforce so it has been very competitive.
Thankyou for doing reviews on each existing bootcamp. I am in the process of looking for one for online study. Many of these bootcamp are $10,000 and up. That's 1 or more years of someone's paycheck. It is good to know each bootcamp camp's pro and con before signing up for class.
When they make class shorter than 6 month, it's to get people to graduate on their timeline and as soon as possible so they can get more money coming in and enroll more students. If too intense, you don't have time to absorb everything information/material you read, heard, and was taught in class. If you fail then have to shell out more money to retake class again. You spend all that money to attend class, should not make experience stressful and rush people align the assembly belt.
I spent a couple months studying for the entry exam, passed it, and started the fulltime program a month later at the end of 2020. This program was waay too advanced and intense for me. I really found this only to be geared towards people with a background in programming. 12 hour days, there is 0 time to go back and study concepts and learn the material. The material was by no means low quality, but you simply *must* have a fairly high familiarity with coding/programming or you will be left in the dust. I say this cause i dont want people to invest the money, get there, and not be ready. I wanted a bootcamp b/c I wanted teaching and instruction. This is not that. It is guided projects with very advanced testing and quizzes along the way. If you dont make the cut, you wont advance. So don't invest the money if you aren't ready for it.
@@Ram-rm2gz Javascript. That's what the entry exam was made up of. The more understanding you have of it, the better. But i would caution you from the program, HR is a large $ investment and not a good format imo
I agree. I'm doing the pre-work now and it not taught well. The person doing does it but doesn't explain it well and tends to ramble on. Which is tough because I hang on every word go he trails off.
Thank you sooo much for this interview!! This was incredibly informative. I’ve never done coding (besides self taught info) and I am doing the test prep for Hack Reactor now but now I know there are a few things that I need to learn outside of the prep. In addition, I understand that I’d rather study more and build a stronger network BEFORE I even jump into the bootcamp. This is now my second favorite channel (after my Christian fellowship channel). You are greatly appreciated man, truly! I pray you have serious growth and success on your channel.
Thanks for the Good interview. Don asked good questions & kept the atmosphere engaging. The panel were open & not guarded or defensive because you set the appropriate environment. Please keep these interviews going.
Really cool video, thanks for putting this together. Only suggestion is to call on a guest when you ask questions. There's a bit of silence after each question because nobody knows when to speak.
No problem. Nah, that would make it feel more like an interview, and I'm trying to move away from that. Most of the time everything starts to flow smoothly within about 10 minutes, but because I'm inviting random people with different personalities, you'll get that once in a while. I'd be completely open to feedback that would create a smoother conversation AND turn the interview into a more conversational style approach though. If you have any ideas, let me know.
Can review Sabio? Theres a lot of programs that are offered to veterans as part of the VET TEC program and i think it would be really valuable to all us veterans to see first hand accounts of peoples experiences in all these boot camps.
Hey don great video. Have you considered having 3 guests that all come from different boot camps? It’d be interesting to hear how much their answers differ when given a question.
Also, my friend just finished the bootcamp and she said she started with 30+ ppl and graduated with 17max. This was 3months ago…. Maybe they should lengthen the full-time and part-time courses so that a few more moments may be spent on harder concepts.
@@DonTheDeveloper I did but must have missed the part where she said she quit. I recently quit Hack Reactor after only 3 days so that’s why I was curious. I was considering giving them a 2nd chance but they do not go into depth with anything at all so I think I will pass on Hack Reactor…thanks for these reviews btw they’re very helpful
@@Alysia.in.Wonderland That might be my bad. Looking through the audio transcript, I’m realizing she was pretty subtle about mentioning it, but yeah that’s what happened. Sometimes I get comments that have a "that's sus" vibe, especially when a guest shares something they didn't want to hear and it breaks the perception that they had about the program, so they just decide to doubt the guest’s credibility. I’m glad you like the content though. Hopefully, you find the right one for you.
Html, css frontend wise. Backend wise not enough focus on db design (when to use nosql / sql dBs) and especially system design basics. A lot of the good bootcamp people were either in STEM / CS (engineering requires a decent number of programming classes) or studied javascript for a good year before getting into the program.
Can you please provide the website you referenced in regards to the statistics of how many people graduated from this bootcamp compared to others? I tried to find it and was unable to. Thank you! (It was mentioned a few times, but also on the 35:00 mark)
Hey don! I found your video because I am about to retire from the military after 20 years (aviation maintenance/organization maintenance management background). The military offers a free vet to tech program through galvanize for an 18wk course. Do you have any advice or pointers for a guy like myself that has zero actual programming experience (aside from basic html stuff I did way back in high school) to get a head start before I start the program? Any books or resources I should be studying?
That might require a few extra follow-up questions to give some tangible advice. Feel free to swing by one of the live streams sometime and we can talk about it then.

Hey Don! Considering you’ve done so many interviews and through your own research, do you have a list of your top 3 recommended coding bootcamps? I narrowed my choices down to Hack Reactor and General Assembly. Seemed like hack reactor prepared their students more in your first interview, but I’m considering going with General Assembly so I can start next month. Not sure if there are others that I haven’t looked into that might offer better outcomes
codecademy full stack. I'm actually doing that as we speak but just started yesterday but it's, to me at least, really good. A lot don't like it though.
