  • The OneXFly Windows gaming handheld is the latest to take on the mighty Steam Deck. It does a lot of things right when it comes to performance...but it misses the mark a bit when it comes to the software. However, It's certainly close and getting better.

    Am I the only one who isn't crazy about thumbsticks that are off-set like the Switch?! I get around the issue by using a 3rd party grip... but those don't exist for new handhelds like this.

      I don't like either!
      For me the thumbsticks belong at the bottom of the grip.
      Like Sony does it for decades now.
      It is the most comfortable and quickest way to switch between Facebuttons and sticks and also it's the only layout that allows you to play for very long time (8+ hrs straight) without having any problems or hand pain!

      You're lucky. I still have problems playing games with the original XBox controller!
      The fact that you can hook it up to another display should be worth the price of admission. It even features a 3.5mm headphone jack--very nice how you can get better sound out of it and without bugging anybody else in the room.
      Have you tried Winaero Tweaker, the software layer that lets you edit tons of Windows features out of the equation for smoother performance or easier interface? It's somewhat a hassle, but it prevents the system from tracking your movements (e.g. disabling the Cortana feature)..

    I do really appreciate these handheld devices. I'm more concerned about the battery and how easy it is to replace as the device gets older. There are also laws being pushed in EU where by 2027 all devices(mobiles, laptops, handhelds etc) must have a replaceable battery that the user can remove without the use of any tools. We'll see how that changes devices, hopefully for the better as I really dislike that especially in phones it's quite difficult to replace a battery.

      That's still pretty cheap considering prices in general have been on an uptrend for many years. Laptops are so much bigger than a handheld so if you really want something like this you'll pick up a handheld over a laptop any day. I think it really boils down to what are you going to be doing with the device, something like this is just for games and so are most high end laptops. Depending on where you live you might take it outside every so often but if you're only going to use it at home that's when it become questionable at that point you might as well just buy a desktop.

If you play on low settings the games still look good and you can get around 4 and 1/2 to 5 hours on a lot of 3d games. The more modern ones on low settings will give you around 3 and 1/2 to 4-ish hours of gameplay. Not bad tbh. The weight isn't much of an issue. I got used to it. The controls are very ergonomic. I don't need a grip to use it, unlike the switch. You can play everything but nintendo exclusives (unless you emulate them) on pc so having a portable pc play everything is great.

The SD was never designed to be the most powerful machine they could muster; it was designed to strike a careful balance between performance, price, battery life, heat dissipation, and software compatibility. They hit a sweet spot for all of these categories and were rewarded for it, much like Nintendo was with the Switch. All the clones just seem to throw bigger and bigger tech specs at the wall without considering any of the other categories that make this type of portable appealing.

    I think Nintendo fans are worried because there's no need to wait for AAA 3rd party ports to come to Switch 1 or 2 anymore now that these handheld PC's exist.
    Nintendo consoles have historically sold less with each new iteration, too (Sales sorted by descending: NES>SNES>N64>GC; Wii>Wii U; DS>3DS), so there's no guarantee that the Switch 2 will outsell the Switch 1, especially if handheld PC's are vying for the attention of older male, hardcore gamers (and people that care little about Nintendo's exclusives).
    And another thing is that these handheld PC's may likely even be able to emulate Switch 2 games, so a lot of handheld PC owners are going to feel like they don't even need a Nintendo console.

    Looking at some comments below in terms of the hardware aging very quickly I think that it`s about that these days some people should come up with a handheld that is modular to an extent that has upgrade paths for a while at least like the APU, the ram, the internal storage, the motherboard even and maybe the screen then I think that many more people including me may have some interest in the handheld scene again especially for me as I wouldn`t use it that much and so potential longevity with upgrade would defo appeal. Now this is not easy to do but in the end I think that someone needs to figure it out eventually

    I like that these things exist--competition and choice in handheld form factor gaming PCs/console hybrids is great--but I'll stick with my Steam Deck. It works great, I don't need the excessively high power levels that these these things tend to provide, and I don't want to run Windows (especially on a handheld, but at all, really).
    I often play my Deck docked and honestly the "default" resolution is just fine, but 1080p on my HDTV is perfectly acceptable too. I play mostly retro and retro-style games and indie games on mine, especially those you can't play on console, so the Steam Deck on its own has far more power in most cases than is really required--and most of the types of indie games I play on it will probably play just fine in a 4K as well when I get a new 4K TV.
    But the point is, resolution is not what I'm going for, and neither is the latest benchmark-setting game, so all that power is pretty useless to me.

    • @pilcrow182
      @pilcrow182 Рік тому

      The price is the biggest reason, yes. But there are a lot of reasons the Steam Deck has done well. The integration between the OS and the hardware, the versatility of the dual trackpads (especially in combination with SteamInput; they can be configured to do *so many* things), etc.
      One of the biggest things that I don't see talked about much is the low-end performance. At TDPs of under 10 watts, the Deck's Van Gogh chipset actually outperforms the 7840U, which means older or less system-intensive games can use less battery life. For example, Steam Deck can emulate GameCube games at full speed at a 3 watt TDP and GPU clock of 500, and get about 6 hours of gameplay. An ROG Ally has the same exact battery capacty, but you'd be hard-pressed to see more than 4 hours running the same games, as it needs to run with higher TDP to reach the same performance.
      With SNES games and a little bit of tweaking with the PowerTools plugin, you can get 8-10 hours out of the Deck. These 7840u devices just can't do that. They beat it on the high end, but fall short on the low end.

    • @Doady1337
      @Doady1337 Рік тому

      Price is a big factor definitely, but it not just price though. Other handhelds coming to the market are Windows OS. Which has some advantages indeed, but Steamdeck being SteamOS, is far more optimised and streamlined for handheld gaming, thus having a less tech savy person being able to jump straight in without many hurdles. Not saying Windows is complicated but its defnintely more appealling to be able to jump into the OS without much fuss.
      This is also 690$ for the entry level. I'd just go Asus for that price.

    This device looks promising except it has some stiff competition with the Aya Neo Air, the GPD Win 4 and the soon to be announced Aya Neo Slide. What they attempt to accomplish in this field will bear heavily on price and performance versus the other handhelds it's competing against in the same form factor. I already have the Win 4 on pre-order and am awaiting GPD to finally start shipping the devices.
