Some viewers are upset that I want GOG games to run on Steam Deck. Trust me, that comes from a place of LOVE for their site & what they do. They sell DRM Free games so it would be awesome if they worked, right? Or is that asking too much?
No not at all, cus why would asking for a version of your game you can play anyway shape or form you want too be too much to ask. You have a Big point you make and it makes sense you would want to play them on steam deck.
Not sure why people would be upset by that. I don't have GOG, but there's older PC games they offer that I would like to buy and run on my Steam Deck. If GOG officially supported the Steam Deck, I'd create an account and they'd get my money.
I don't think that's asking too much, but if they did they'd be supporting their competitors product. While also getting some stuff working on linux/contributing to proton, which is kinda a steam product as well (not technically, but their a hugge contributing force) They have a bit of a fickle relationship with Linux to an extent people made things like heroic launcher and lutris. I think people get a little too overzealous and passionate sometimes and they're worried about something getting framed in a bad light that they love.
What Valve are doing with Proton on Steam is nothing short of a miracle and it will take years/decades for their whole library to be tested and working under SteamOS as well as it does on Windows. The GOG store is just too big and even if their launcher gets ported to the device, just the thought that they can do the same about their game catalog is unimaginable. However as Linux goes, where there's Wine there's always a way.
yes, to be deck verified it would take forever to go through gog's library. but since proton doesn't always need per game tweaks, there's a good chance most of the games will work but will need a keyboard and mouse plugged in to play, or special mappings set up in steam.
Idk about your timescale. Like technically yeah, but basically every title people care about will be tested in months as it's community sourced. I'm sure some stragglers will go under tested or just not tested full stop, but valve aren't testing every single title in house
@@lainwired3946 IIRC the community can mark a game as 'compatible', but being marked as 'verified' requires an evaluation by Valve themselves. I could be wrong, but that's what I've heard.
Years maybe, not decades though. I say by 2025 it should be absolutely a seamless experience and if they go to an ARM platform it will surpass Windows.
Ironically most of the games I’ve tried that were “unchecked” seem to already work on there. It’s mostly that the library has to be “verified” for working, so I see it taking a lot less time than people might think.
The best thing about the device is that it's constantly evolving through software updates. That and we've had years of steam controller support so finding customer button layouts is so easy.
The reason im selling mine is because its outdated compared to Cloud pc's that work on any device you choose with the benefit of having desktop specs on portable devices.
@@MisterUrbanWorld I dunno I have a laptop and a gaming rig and even a ps5, still find myself sinking more time into the deck than anything. It's just so versatile, goes beyond just streaming to a mobile device.
The Steam controller was a bit of a flop though, good idea/intentions, badly executed. I mean I got mine for a couple £ because Valve were trying to get rid of their inventory(along with a Steam Link) One mistake they made was talking about how the touchpad would be better for fps games than a 2nd analog stick, and it just isn't, if you've ever played an fps on a laptop using the touchpad rather than an external mouse, you'll know what it's like. They should have spoken about how they gyro makes it easier to aim in fps games, but they either didn't realise or didn't care until it was too late, and the ABXY buttons were too low on the pad.(and too small, and to the left instead of the right of the secondary pad)
Valve really knocked it out of the park. I'm a primarily PC gamer, who mostly uses steam, so this console feels like it was made for me. Most my library is there, and everything has worked flawlessly for me (except sonic mania, which was defaulting to a weird aspect ratio, but I fixed it in settings in 5 seconds sooo). I hope Valve continues support and reiterates on this idea, because I think it's one of the best things they've done in years
Yep a lot of the fixes are very easy but I think my problem is when people start doing comparisons to OneX and Aya devices whicb have WAY more issues running games that people hardly mention. On VSD sometimes all you need to do is change Proton.
@@HiPlayerProdigy I just don't think people understand how manufacturing works either. A company like Valve is making considerably more Steam Decks than a company like Aya of Ayn. Valve is producing around 20k a week vs other companies making around 1k production total. It's the same thing when people call the Steam Deck a Nintendo Switch killer. Nintendo production capabilities are considerably higher than Valves. It is physically impossible for Valve to outsell the switch and it is physically impossible for Chinese alternatives to outsell the steam deck. That isn't even getting into how important steamOS is for making the experience GOOD. Making a portable machine is half of the issue, the OS experience needs to match, and Valve is the only company providing both. Not to mention having such a high install base for the product means you are more likely to find online resources for your issue and how to solve it. Inevitably someone along the way encountered the same bug and shared the solution online
I disagree. I really wanted just one game to work and that was rollercoaster tycoon. Also there was no way to know which games were supported at launch. A third party website was doing a better job. They did not knock it out of the park.
I think one of the amazing aspects of emulation on the Steam Deck is the fact that the controller lends itself very nicely to multiple console generations, and the strong community support for projects like EmuDeck make installation, configuration and playing emulated games on the deck much easier as time progresses.
@0:57 The main difference to the switch is it is a full-fledged PC with hdmi out you can hook peripherals to. @2:20 Dude, you can upgrade the storage later on with a larger NVME SSD. This is not an Apple product. The main difference to the mid tier Steamdeck, it has a higher quality screen. @6:58 You could use FSR if you want for better graphical fidelity.
The best part about the Steam Deck is using the desktop mode and then using it as a portable computer. You then have the tools to customize the desktop and add in things you wouldn't be able to do on other handheld devices. You can play games one moment and write documents the next.
@@weaverquest my laptop is 7 years old with a cracked screen. This will be my replacement! Docked with kb/m and monitor for work and then pick up and play when I wana get into some games. Cant wait feel like a lil kid
Just remember everyone, this is only going to get better. And it's already amazing. Good job Valve. Don't forget the community. The steam deck will be a boss for a long time.
Lmao, you have people complaining about the all digital future, but now we hear 'tHIs iS OnLy gOiNg tO gET bETteR'... YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO! xD
Most people now will give it bad reviews because this reason or that. But I'm with you, it's going to be top boss for a good while. Unless Nintendo pulls out a pro version
I think that Heroic games launcher also works for Epic games and GOG? So quite a few options...would be great to see an updated video from him on these.
TBH I never really thought about it but I guess it makes sense. Even though all of the DOSBox games in their library would be dead simple to make compatible with Linux (there's DOSBox for Linux), I guess their primary market by far is still Windows based, and as a business I guess it would be hard to say "only certain titles have Linux support". If they did it they'd probably have to go all out, and although DOSBox titles should be dead simple to do, the rest wouldn't be and would have a massive cost and support overhead.
Glad you made this video MJR. I really appreciate your insight on all things gaming. As primarily a Switch gamer, I placed an order for a Steam Deck because of its portability and what it can offer that the switch cannot. Looking forward to getting it!
Thank you for focusing more on the games aspect of the Deck, I reserved mine and am eagerly awaiting it, as I also have been playing the Switch, and it’s so hard to find a video NOT talking about the same stuff about just the buttons and how it feels physically. This is getting me even more hyped! Great content.
The best part is, that most of the not verified games also run without issues. Proton is a miracle. I remember trying to play windows games on Linux like 10 years ago and it was awful back then. Absolutely stunning now.
I am really close to getting a Steam Deck. I also don't have a gaming PC, and the various sales and sheer size of Steam's library is like a gaming siren calling my name.
You will be waiting a while though they are still trying to get back orders out. I pre-ordered day one on 16th July last year and only got mine 2 weeks ago
for the games the Steam Deck is being capable of running, it's not bad AT ALL for its price of 400/500... it's like it can run games that a 1500 gaming PC runs... if it has a TV/screen Output, then even better... in the same price range there are AMD Ryzen laptops, I have one, but let me be honest here I don't recommend anything AMD anymore, only if you're desperate or without choice in stock
Best advice for non steam deck owners is don’t be discouraged if your favorite game is unsupported. I found that 95% of unsupported games I have work just fine it just may take some tweaking with proton layers and control editing.
A fair chunk of the older unsupported titles are down to Proton lacking things like WMV support as Valve can't package that in. ProtonGE covers that though.
I have seen more than a hundred videos of Steamdeck on the youtube and I personally believe that this is the best and most useful of them in terms of content and playback. keep the Good work on !!
Someone may have already posted something similar, but there is a GOG community discussion forum page called "Linux, DOSBox & GOG DOS Games" where users have posted a fix for getting older GOG games running on Linux. The discussion is a bit older, but it might help you get things running on the Deck.
@@simpedros4766 I'm not defending shit. People alway want this and that, why not make one yourself. No business have to prioritize because it's for another company. They do it because it's good for business. It is what it is.
@@alanc6009 They already support two other platforms owned by other companies and all people are doing is saying "hey we like your product and would like it available here". Their entire business is reliant on other companies platforms so it's nothing strange about asking what they they plan to support going forward.
The thing is...steam isn't going anywhere. You will be able to re download steam games forever on any upcoming handheld. Where as the switch will eventually make you rebuy older games again when the estore changes to the newer system like they've done in the past. Nintendo will never let you take your older games with you to the newer system now they know they can "port it" and resell it
Awesome, congrats! Do you remember how long after the pre-order opened that you completed your order? My sister was around 40 min and got her email last week, I'm 1hr 11 min and am still supposedly Q2 but I assume I have 3-4 weeks still.
@@spontanioussponge it opened at 1pm et, so noon your time. I assume you were a 64 or 256gb model then? They are shipping more quickly than the 512gb model. Enjoy your Deck!
A big thing I love about my steam deck is having the touchpads, gyroscope, and robust controller remapping software built in. Being able to play tons of games that don’t have official controller support is amazing. Tons of early PC games that were built for keyboard and mouse are accessible on the deck’s controller
Been loving mine! It's exactly what I wanted, a portable device that really let's you tweak every aspect. It's perfect for everything from gta to classic RPG's. Valve knocked it out of the park imo
@@westerling8436 It has 3 tiers, the cheapest at 399$ has 64gb (you can just get a SD card for space, runs fine) then the middle one is 529 with 256gb, and finally the big boi 512gb at 649$. It also has a anti glare screen which isn't necessary imo, depends on your situation and if you are gonna play it outside. The middle option is usually the goto.
@@SolidSnake240 you buy it to play handheld, not docked. In docked mode the graphics are going to be pretty bad because 1280x800 just doesn't look good at all on bigger screens, even a 24" monitor will have it looking bad. If you only play low spec games you could run it at 1080p I guess though. If you want to play PC games on a bigger screen, get a PC, you can buy or build one that will outperform the Steam Deck for about the same price as a Steam Deck.
how's the battery? it's the only thing i have doubts about the steam deck. I heard the battery only lasts about 6hrs of gameplay and iirc it has around 5350mAh. I'm no expert in the matter but i think the battery tends to last less over time as we recharge it, right? So 6-7hrs in the beginning of its lifespam i wonder what would it be like 2 years after moderate use.
Steam deck is just amazing really. As a visually impaired player, I've been able to find a good number of games in my steam library I can play without having to read in. Been trying to get the Orca Screen reader installed, but I'm kinda burnt out as I keep having to use my phone as a magnifier to do things heh. Fantastic handheld though. Once I can hook it up to a monitor, should be much easier.
Yoohoo. I can now play my games on a small bad screen with low resolution graphics. And it costs more than my gaming pc! Now i can throw away my big high res pc monitor already. Ahmazing!!
Personally, I think judging the steam deck for its ability to run Gog, Windows, or emulation games is a bit unfair. Steam is being very consumer friendly to allow competitors to run on their device. Yo have to jail break other devices to do the things it lets you do freely. i think the steam deck should be judged for how well they are getting their steam library to operate, and everything else is icing on the cake. There is plenty on steam to keep you occupied.
The fact is the games run fine, it's just that GoG is not supporting Linux so Galaxy can't be installed in any capacity. It's just a reminder that GoG is a business and not your friend, fact is their website only pushes the "DRM Free" aspect because it's good for marketing, thus the reason that these days it doesn't really push that hard on it because the sentiment is that "lightweight" DRM is fine. (Fact is GoG has DRM too and that's kinda my point, requiring you to login to prove you purchased software in order to download it is DRM, HumbleBundle is more DRM free on the titles that have DRM free available). The fact that this company that is all about shedding the shackles of DRM doesn't have a linux client is pretty telling that it's all business decisions. Developing for Linux isn't "profitable" for them, so they're not going to bother. Supporting steam deck will only end up helping them in the long game, but in the short term it will be a cost to benefit customers that have already bought games, and they sure as hell don't care about them. The fact that once I got steam deck set up I was able to hit the power button to switch it to "desktop" mode was amazing, I wish the desktop mode was better built for being a mobile platform but hey it was there and doesn't take too much effort to piece together and get emudeck running, hell I can even download all the illegal roms I want directly to it, no jailbreaking or routing necessary. Steam made something special here, and the only reason gog says they won't support it... is because Steam is their competitor, what they want people to do is not buy the steam deck, and by the time they realize they would profit off of supporting the steam deck, it will be too late for them as a company. Dealing with steam.dll DRM has and always will be fundamentally more worth it than dealing with buying games on GoG.
I'm a single dad with a very capable 1080 ti pc that I have not had hooked up for 2 years. The Sream Deck had allowed me to do something I never had time to do before. Best device Since the smart phone.
Steam Deck looks awesome. I own an Aya Neo, and I absolutely adore it. It's totally reignited my love of gaming, because I don't have to be tied to a chair/couch to do it.
the sheer fact that I have accumulated so many games on steam over the years and haven't played so many of them makes me want one of these so badly. The library is already there, no buying new stuff, just messing with emulators, working through the backlog, and replaying classics. It also seems open to you if you want to tinker. This is the opposite of so many devices nowadays.
I love my steam deck. My account is old and I bought most of my games in the 360 PS3 era. It has been a blast going through some of those games I skipped or didn't have time for in the past. I ran through Enslaved and did have some minor graphical issues when bringing up the command menu, but it didn't effect completing the game.
The steam deck really shows how far we've come. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West had pretty poor performance on the Xbox 360 and absolutely atrocious performance on the PS3. Yet here we are now, running it in about an equal resolution and a higher, more stable frame-rate portably. Feels good.
the steamdeck battery is useless, the system itself is GIANT. the thing cannot be used at full power unless plugged in, so. it might as well not even be a portable handheld. a switch OLED is the greatest handheld ever. it has far superior battery, it has plenty of triple AAA games, like dying light, skyrim, friday 13th, evil dead, witcher 3 etc. AND tons of amazing nintendo games like mario odyssey, breath of the wild, mario kart etc. and it has a better screen actually, not to mention it COMES with a dock and is insanely cheaper in price. the switch can actually fit some peoples pockets and depending on the model you get, you could fit it into most pockets with the lite. it does not NEED to replace your gaming laptop or desktop PC. a handheld should just be an option you use when you need to go out, and the switch is perfect for that. with all the great games it has and ease of use and design. it just beats the holy hell out of a steamdeck. this steamdeck is literally offensive. valve has the balls to call this thign a handheld, but its actually just a less capable gaming PC with the gimmick of looking like a prtable handheld, even tho its battery only lasts max maybe 3 hours with triple AAA games. yeah yeah i know you can get battery banks etc, but why? whats the fucking point of doing that if your using a HANDHELD. you might as well take out the laptop and plug in. i just dont get why anyone is wasting money on this thing. i say we boycott valve and force them to make a better handheld and refund our money back. its theft. with those teir model prices, they should have added something worth extra money. like i dont know, BETTER BATTERY????
Got mine in April and love it. So many tweaks you can do. I'm loving the reshade mod you can add to certain games. It gives the game colors a more vibrant look. NBA 2k22 looks like a new game with the mod.
Everyone expects too much in my opinion, this is Valve's first handheld console and it is perfect for what it has set out to achieve. Great specs, price and features the switch didn't even have till like last year. Not to mention the huge variety of games, tinkering steam sales and better prices for games. Valve is also constantly updating and improving the Steam Deck so honestly I don't see what there is left to complain about. Another thing is that it was never intended to be a Switch competitor.
I think he was generally realistic and positive about it. Just realistic about what doesn't work. Honestly, it'd be useful if heroic launcher just used their own native dosbox for DOS games, at least as a workaround option. Obviously Wine shouldn't be having whatever issue it's having with the bundled dosbox but there's generally benefits to using a non-crusty old dosbox version anyway. A game which maybe previously had performance issues could potentially run better or with lighter resource needs (better battery life) under a newer dosbox.
Been loving my steam deck so far. I've played quite a few games on it and most of the untested games I've tried actually work just fine. But if you don't have a regular pc gaming setup that this will complement, stick to the green and yellow titles. Also if there's any games that don't work well and you have a gaming pc, you can use remote play from it so you can play it on the handheld. And as far as emulation MJR, you can even emulate og xbox, ps3, AND Switch. As far as the issues with some of the gog games, have you tried launching them in the Linux desktop? Maybe the dos based games will work better that way.
@@circleofsorrow4583 not sure if you mix up with the possibility to install Linux on PS3 back in the day? The OS in recent PlayStations is Orbis, a custom FreeBSD variant. So it's not super far off, but I still would call same same but very different 😅👍 PlayStation running a super specialized Unix variant under the hood isn't helping Linux gaming in any capacity afaik
What has impressed me about Valve's support so far, was when Elden Ring was having trouble running on steam deck, VALVE dropped a patch for steam deck to help it run better. I wont be getting mine till Q3 but I'm looking forward to it!
Can't wait for ours to arrive! Tons of GOG titles ready to go >:D Valve's hardware never seems perfect but more a work in progress. Here's hoping they continue to finesse it though 🤘
@@itcamefromabox it can work, you just need to learn a few things and tinker a bit. When you've done it a few times most games are fairly fast to get setup

Its funny how when you were talking about older games and in fact had vampire the masquerade redemption up, i wasnt even looking at my youtube window and was trying to see if it that exact game ran correctly! From what I read the Steam version seems to work once the controller is mapped.
I've had my Steam Deck since March and I love it. Played Elden Ring docked with a Wii U pro controller. And of course my GC back ups on it are great. If Nintendo won't give me a F Zero GX port I ll play it my way.
waiting for mine to be shipped at the moment, its great for what it is, a companion device for people that already game on PC. I have a lot of down time at work so it'll be nice to bang out a hour or two on the deck and when I get home pick up right where I left off on my desk top. I wouldn't want this to be my sole introduction into pc gaming though because you'd be disappointed going into it with high expectations.
My real gripe is with the higher price I’d have some fear of analog drift or other potential controller issues you’ve seen as of late would render it unplayable or require specialized repair/service. So I would like the option to have easier replacement or even removable controllers. Doesn’t have to be “Switch like” that definitely solves that issue but maybe “pop out drop in modules” would be fantastic. Just my personal opinion.
@@revmaillet Correct, the Steam Deck. Not everyone is technically capable or comfortable opening up their devices to repair regardless of content that’s out there to aid them.
One thing you could try for some of the DOS based GOG games is running them from another computer on hand and installing Moonlight. I aim to try and use Moonlight very extensively when I get mine (including through Wireguard for remote play) so we'll see how things hold up, but it might be something to try since supporting them natively is a mixed bag it seems.
Love this hands-on review on this fantastic machine. You go beyond the surface on this, and it opens up some pretty cool things to do with the Steam Deck. As if it wasn't already cool enough as it is! One comment, and I know I am nitpicking here. 13:35, Proton isn't an emulator. It is a reverse-engineered Windows runtime environment that runs the games natively by translating system calls into Linux-compatible equivalents. Translating calls is a lot faster and more efficient than emulating said calls. Emulation is mostly used when trying to run code compiled for one architecture on a different architecture. Specifically Wine (or Proton, which is Wine with a big beautiful cherry on the top), can't run ARM software since it simply translates Windows calls into Posix calls. But they are still x86 calls. Same goes for DX -> Vulkan. It's the same hardware running beneath it all. It's only the layout, so to speak, of the API that differs. So as long as that can be translated, it works pretty much natively. Which is also why so many games run really well with Proton. They absolutely wouldn't with an emulator. HOWEVER! In the case of GOG games, it sometimes actually IS emulation, since GOG games often use DosBox, which uses an entirely different architecture for many things. And therefore emulation is required. So it would seem it actually runs those games using Wine, which run the Windows version of the DosBox emulator. Kind of funny when you think about it, since DosBox has native Linux support... :D
The console is already inexpensive if you think about it, unnecessary extras definitely need their own version or it would translate to less choice and a higher price on just the one or two versions
Metal, you are awesome! I just got my Steam Deck and I'm new to PC gaming. I've been a console gamer since the 2600 days and every generation since but never got into PC gaming. Thanks for this review, I learned a lot.
MJR, would you be interested to do a followup in the near future. SO much has been added and improved. If you do, would you test some of the games in this video with the updated one? Thanks for your enthusiasm and passion for gaming.
I wish my experience with the deck was as smooth, it's been more of a nightmare. I've been sent three Decks, forth on the way, and they've all been bad. I was apart of the Q2 Crew and got mine about two months ago. That one would boot loop on the initial update until finally the internal storage just stopped working. Got an RMA, sent that back, got a new one. This Deck got through the update alright, but it would randomly say the battery was depleted and shut down. This was fresh off the charger and at 100%. If I kept the charger plugged in, it would stay on and I'd watch the battery go from 100% to 0% to 60%, all over the place in a span of minutes. Got another RMA, sent it back, got a new one, same exact problem. Now I've sent this one back and I'm waiting on my fourth. And I know your first instinct is think I must doing something wrong. 1) Other people have reported having the same problems I've had and 2) I'm only taking the thing out of the box and plugging it in. I dunno, man. It works if I leave it plugged in, and I do love it. But the defeats the point of it being portable. I could return it, but I've already sunk so much time, energy, and money into this thing. And before anyone says it: If you're Deck is working perfectly, awesome. I hope you're enjoying it. I say that sincerely, no sarcasm.
I watched a video the other day and the person asked "if you could choose a game to be remade, what would it be?", and a few popped in my head but I said "ABSOLUTELY, Enslaved, Odyssey to the West", man you talk about an older hidden gem, I absolutely loved that game! I remember I found it and another obscure game called Singularity on the 360 at a Big Lots store and didn't know a thing about either one but I got both for under $10 and they were both FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC. And not to days later I see you playing it on one of your videos, now I'm just hoping this is some kind of sign from the video game gods that we're actually getting the remake
I finally started playing some games that I kept putting off... Ni No Kuni 2, NieR, Star Ocean... Those games are so good and they play perfectly on the deck. Top tier wild pack!
I've had my Deck for about a week and I have yet to put it down. What has really amazed me is how well my open world titles have run on this thing. It has given me an excuse to work on finishing my backlog titles on my library. Some of the games I'm playing are Fallout 4, Borderlands 3, Yakuza 0, & Dying Light 2. All great titles and worthy of recommendation. Happy Gaming MJR!
wow... I could not fathom playing games like that that require you to see and aim at the distance on such a small screen... but if you claim for it to be possible, I have no reason to doubt you... very intriguing for sure... does it have a TV out? and how is it for battery life?
@@FeelingShred I know exactly what you mean and that was my biggest concern, but after having it in my hands the screen is not as bad as I thought it would be. If you connect it to a hub you can connect to monitors, keyboard, and mouse with ease and as far as battery life you can tweak the settings on the game and the Deck and get 2-3 hours on graphic instance games and maybe double that on less intense ones.
@@stevealms4971 2 or 3 hours battery? interesting, the Steam Deck has AMD chips if I'm not mistaken... that's the same battery life I get from my brand new AMD laptop, 2:30 hours at maximum, more like 2 hours flat... terrible for this day and age but whatever... my 2009 laptop had more than this (it also had Intel chip)
so far I am running in two modes using the dual boot ability. I have actually set the deck to autoboot off a bootable mSD card. I run batocera off an mSD card and it's amazing how much runs perfectly on that out of the box. almost no tweaking. Bluetooth is the only thing I am annoyed with so far, I am hoping they resolve those issues down the line with pairing better. when I remove the mSD card, or if I use the keys to bring up the boot menu during power up, I then boot off the internal SSD into steam. even playing something like Path of Exile with saturated density of mobs on the screen, it runs most of my steam library very well. I am more than pleased with it. plug in to a larger monitor. no problem. I am still debating which port dock I am going to get, I may just go with a simple $40 one for now that has a built in kick stand so I can set also easily watch movies. (amazon prime video working aok in SteamOS mode and Kodi working great in Batocera mode. just a fantastic set of options. I have not paired it with other controllers yet, but I have seen others say that works well also. way more pleased with the steam deck than I expected to be.
I finally got my steam deck two days ago. Just as I planned, I played Valdis Story first and it was glorious. I made a steam collection for games to install before I got it and I'm glad that I did. I'm not happy that the default Steam Deck UI doesn't have an option (that I could find) for selecting multiple games for installation. At least switching to desktop mode and connecting a keyboard let me get that rolling right away.
Recommendation: Zwei! (Steam) It's a pretty gorgeous 2D top down japanese RPG. Originally released for the PSP, Japan only. Received now an official translation.
What I would like to know is if there are games rated as only as 'unsupported' or 'playable' might actually be playable with an external mouse and keyboard through a dock or bluetooth. I'm thinking of older games available in steam that may be untested.
It's great value for the money...I've got mine like a month ago and have played games from my pile of shame that have been laying there for years haha. I've taken it on a city trip as well and it was a great experience...granted you need a capable powerbank just in case there's no wallplug around
Off topic... since your my go to guy on video games... have you ever done any videos on disc rot. I just recently took my games outta storage ( they been in storage several years) and now I'm finding half my games don't play? These are all Ps2 games ,I don't know what going on? I'm thinking either all my games are rotted or my console doesn't work? I only managed to get a few of them to play but don't understand why the others don't work? These are ps2 games...I also noticed the black discs play ok while the silver disk cannot read my games? These are at least 20. I don't think there bad since there so many I can't play but don't understand why they won't play? Could it be disc rot? I don't see anything wrong on the disc when I look?
I have been playing emulators since 2003 or 2004 and never had to deal with any of that crap PS2 is particularly bad at not reading discs, PS1 will take a beating and doesn't mind... anyway, best of luck, and for the future try to adapt instead of locked in the past (sorry just trying to be funny LOL)
Finally you get a modern gaming PC!!! The steam deck is awesome and I love mine!!! BTW a lot of unsupported games work great, the batman games all work fantastic!
GOG answered the question you posed to them; in their opinion, more GOG games will run in Windows (at the time). It's not a 'lam answer' considering GOG/Valve don't have much incentive to work together, currently. The software on Steam and GOG are the same, only one contains extra DRM. If it works from Steam it (can) work from GOG.
I've had my Deck for about 2 months now and I'm in love with it. About half of my 300 hours in Elden Ring has been on the Deck lol. My best tips are to follow the /r/steamdeck subreddit for one, there are always new tricks and tips popping up there, and it seems to be the most active hub of Steam Deck users. Always play with the settings in QAM ( . . . ) locking Elden Ring to 30fps is a must. Ignore people telling you to go 40fps/40hz with that one. Fallout 76 on the other hand, runs a smooth 60fps right out of the box. You want to cut that one down to 40fps/40hz in the QAM, you will double your battery life instantly, and 40fps on the deck is nearly indistinguishable from 60fps, they are both super smooth, and look and feel better than a 30fps lock in that game. You can also mess with the TDP settings, if a game is only using 5-10w at max, lock it there in the QAM , and it will give you a nice boost in battery life for that game. You can tick a box in the QAM to make settings per game, so you get a setup perfect for smoothness and battery life, and you don't have to do it again, and it won't carry over to a game that doesn't need those settings. ProtonDB! The ProtonDB will be a LIFESAVER, head over there and search up a game you're having issues with, and there will most likely be several people giving you a run down on what they tweaked to get it to run, or give you the bad news that a title is currently not doable at all on Linux. I've got about 20 "unsupported" games on my Deck, and they are all running smooth as eggs thanks to folks over on ProtonDB.
Some of the slow-downs may have also been framerate issues, I noticed on some games when I had lowered the framerate to 30 or 40 for battery life/cooling, it messed with the game. Had to raise it back up to 60.
Still waiting to be able to order mine... I thought I got my reservation in pretty early, but I guess not as early as I thought. The expected availability was listed as "Q2 (April-June) 2022". Well, it's now almost halfway into June and not a peep. I'm thinking the Steam Deck 2 will be taking reservations and I'll still be waiting on my Steam Deck 1... Also, your video reminded me that I need to get a large memory chip for storage, so appreciate that!
just an observation that made me smile, when you mentioned games from x360/ps3 era you showed one game fro that time and the rest of the footage was newer games from XO/PS4 era. But I fully get your point and agree these games can be bought often for 5$ or less they are still in many cases very good games. And in comparison to ps3/x360 you get the freedom of PC being able to tweak the settings. It is also true these games can be played on a laptop (maybe even connected to older big full hd display), but it is a big difference in comparison to be able to play them on a handheld. Have a nice time gaming! \m/
Signed up on steam to get one in Oct 2021 and it said estimated delivery day is early 2nd quarter 22. So like March to may. Then checking the steam site and been bumped to late 3rd quarter august to October of 22. Still waiting.🤦♂️
I don't have a Steam Deck but when I was running a Linux laptop I was able to get all my GOG Dos games to run by just taking the game files, moving them somewhere else, and then running a native Linux version of DOSBox... Not only did they all run perfectly, the version of DOSBox I used included extra features like MT-32 Emulation and soundfont support for general MIDI. I imagine it should be be totally possible to do the same on the Steam Deck - but I also recognize not everyone wants to do that much messing around to get those games up and running.
I love the switch and would like a steam deck, my main problem is almost every game (1st and 3rd person) makes me so dizzy on the handheld, even thinking about playing it makes my head spin. To play them on a TV I literally have to hold the controller so my forearm is on top of my head and I can see the edge of it. I also sometimes get a feeling IRL where looking or even thinking about corners of objects really hurts and is difficult to process.
I've had my Deck for months now. It's amazing... when you use it for what it's specifically intended for (playing recent titles from Steam). Even though they advertise the openness of the platform, way too often I find it prohibitively difficult to accomplish anything besides that one thing. I also don't really enjoy the redundancy of the controls. I feel like they went small where they should've went big, and went big where they should've went small.
@@FeelingShred Battery life varies wildly and of course, you have complete control over it. Playing a recent AAA game at high settings and 60Hz will drain it in under 2 hours. You can lower the settings, underclock the display, or play something less demanding. I haven't had overheating issues but I don't feel like I've taxed it either.
@@MyNameIsBucket oh OK... from what I've read Steam Deck uses AMD chips... so it's the same problem I have in my AMD laptop: low battery life, regardless of how heavy a game is... I can't get more than 2:30 hours battery on my brand new AMD laptop no matter what I do... unless I turn off Wifi and leave it there unused, but then you could say that doesn't count... meanwhile, I have seen (more than one) video footage proof of Intel customers getting more than 6 hours out of their Intel laptops... we can brag all day about how "evil corporate" Intel is, but at the end of the day Intel treats their customers with more respect, more value for their money
@@FeelingShred You misunderstand. It's not like an Intel chip could do better. What kind of battery life do you expect playing a AAA game on a handheld? Maybe your laptop is defective.
Quick Q: I have steam and had a powerful PC but got tired of continually updating parts. I am now almost all switch now, so my question is: does my steam library cross over to the Deck? If I sign in to my account? I really miss some of those games that just aren’t on the switch
I'm stoked to get mine but I am a little saddened that Dosbox games aren't working. I'm sure there must be a linux equivalent to dosbox but that's also kind of a hassle to have to set up shortcuts in steam for every dos game individually. Great review, the fact that Shivers 2 was first in your steam library wasn't lost on me haha. I still have a boxed copy just because you were in it haha.
Some gog games have native linux versions available on the website. They just can't be downloaded with the launcher because it's windows-only. Make sure to check the website for native linux versions. Regarding dosbox: there are native linux builds, as others have mentioned. The gog dosbox games usually come with premade configurations, often you can simply open that configuration in dosbox and play the game. You might need to change some file paths tho. Linux uses / while windows uses \. You can try to change the paths in the .conf files to / but keep the .bat files with \ because they use the dosbox internal file paths.
that's actually a good tip yeah I didn't know about Linux native files on the website... but then again, it's weird because if Wine is set up correctly none of that would ever be necessary
@@FeelingShred The problem with that is that the gog client thinks that it runs in windows. Why should it supply linux files? A solution would be a native linux gog client
@@Flashcardsinfo I don't know why you're being dramatic about it though... when I used Linux for about 5 years, that was the standard procedure, it worked just fine, I had Wine installed and Dosbox just worked as intended, never had an issue with that... I don't see much of a "problem" as you are stating
@@Flashcardsinfo in the end, it seems to come down to something in the Steam OS itself, the way Wine is configured inside the Steam Deck... if it is not using the standard address of /home/UserName/.wine then Dosbox will not be able to find the Prefix to run it (future updates will deal with that)

Some viewers are upset that I want GOG games to run on Steam Deck. Trust me, that comes from a place of LOVE for their site & what they do. They sell DRM Free games so it would be awesome if they worked, right? Or is that asking too much?
I was hoping there'd be a comment here from a Linux guy who could help you run some of those DOS-based titles.
While also getting some stuff working on linux/contributing to proton, which is kinda a steam product as well (not technically, but their a hugge contributing force)
They have a bit of a fickle relationship with Linux to an extent people made things like heroic launcher and lutris. I think people get a little too overzealous and passionate sometimes and they're worried about something getting framed in a bad light that they love.
GOG is a wonderful website. People don't realize the risk of DRM. If Steam Servers die tomorrow, you WILL NOT be able to play your games. Enough said.
Also that Steam OS is built off Arch which means it uses rolling releases, and makes sure it has the biggest changes right away.
I'd say the best feature is the Console Ecosystem that doesn't need to ask for Ports. I love just the free Acess to the PC Ecosystem.
Except the hardware becomes outdated in under next 6 months which does not makes it a pc
I disagree. I really wanted just one game to work and that was rollercoaster tycoon. Also there was no way to know which games were supported at launch. A third party website was doing a better job. They did not knock it out of the park.
That and their VR headset !!!!!!!!!!
True. I should have mentioned that. 👍

You still need to a monitor and keyboard for that though... Not really practical over having any other handheld plus an actual laptop.

You can literally install GOG games just fine using Lutris. Secondly, Proton-GE (a fork of Proton Experimental build) runs all of my GOG games.
I think that Heroic games launcher also works for Epic games and GOG? So quite a few options...would be great to see an updated video from him on these.
Thanks for backing up the GOG customers! Hopefully they appreciate your constructive criticism and provide more support to their earnest community.
Thanks! I thought it was fair and coming from a good place. I love their site!
This video I have been waiting on! lol im so glad you're enjoying yours dude.
I just got mine last week…I love it!
Thanks for filming, uploading, and sharing!
You bet!
Glad you made this video MJR. I really appreciate your insight on all things gaming. As primarily a Switch gamer, I placed an order for a Steam Deck because of its portability and what it can offer that the switch cannot. Looking forward to getting it!
Glad I could help!
I also don't have a gaming PC, and the various sales and sheer size of Steam's library is like a gaming siren calling my name.

for the games the Steam Deck is being capable of running, it's not bad AT ALL for its price of 400/500... it's like it can run games that a 1500 gaming PC runs... if it has a TV/screen Output, then even better... in the same price range there are AMD Ryzen laptops, I have one, but let me be honest here I don't recommend anything AMD anymore, only if you're desperate or without choice in stock
I would love a follow up now with all the updates the steamdeck has had to fix a lot of these issues.
As a person who never got to have a PSP or DS growing up...i'm gonna enjoy this
Best advice for non steam deck owners is don’t be discouraged if your favorite game is unsupported. I found that 95% of unsupported games I have work just fine it just may take some tweaking with proton layers and control editing.
A fair chunk of the older unsupported titles are down to Proton lacking things like WMV support as Valve can't package that in. ProtonGE covers that though.
Got the deck 3 days ago. Have played nothing but eternal darkness on GameCube emulator. This is a retro systems dream.
I have seen more than a hundred videos of Steamdeck on the youtube and I personally believe that this is the best and most useful of them in terms of content and playback. keep the Good work on !!
That's a way to fuel a man's ego.
Someone may have already posted something similar, but there is a GOG community discussion forum page called "Linux, DOSBox & GOG DOS Games" where users have posted a fix for getting older GOG games running on Linux. The discussion is a bit older, but it might help you get things running on the Deck.
Looks like Heroic is going to add more support for the DOSBOX stuff, which is great. 👍
It's a shame that GOG doesn't support the Steam Deck. It seems to be like the perfect hand held to play these retro games.
It's a Steam Deck not a GOG deck. Steam doesn't need to do anything to GOG or the other way around.

I ran through Enslaved and did have some minor graphical issues when bringing up the command menu, but it didn't effect completing the game.
how is battery life on it?
really apprieciate you showing outrun2 at 9:10 one of my favourite all time games and it doesn't get enough love!!
The steam deck really shows how far we've come. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West had pretty poor performance on the Xbox 360 and absolutely atrocious performance on the PS3. Yet here we are now, running it in about an equal resolution and a higher, more stable frame-rate portably. Feels good.
I misread that as basically “The Steam Deck shows how enslaved we’ve become to the anti-Christ known only as GABEN”
the steamdeck battery is useless, the system itself is GIANT. the thing cannot be used at full power unless plugged in, so. it might as well not even be a portable handheld. a switch OLED is the greatest handheld ever. it has far superior battery, it has plenty of triple AAA games, like dying light, skyrim, friday 13th, evil dead, witcher 3 etc.
Thanks for making this video is was very helpful. The steam deck seems like a must buy for me even if it has some flaws.
I've had mine for a few weeks. I've played it every single day. It's exactly what I've wanted for years. The ergonomics alone are epic.
The Steam Deck is amazing, I am loving mine. Playing through games like F.E.A.R 1, 2 and 3 on a portable system has been great.
Got mine in April and love it. So many tweaks you can do. I'm loving the reshade mod you can add to certain games. It gives the game colors a more vibrant look. NBA 2k22 looks like a new game with the mod.
Reshade is an amazing tool, I wished I learned about it earlier
very easy to use too, pretty much everything automated
I’m waiting for the 2nd iteration. I couldn’t deal with that battery life. AAA games will only last about 2 hours max
Damn it can emulate og Xbox? Through what? Retro arch?

how is the steam deck when it comes to battery life?
One really nice addition to this is the benefit Linux gets from this. Really making Linux a viable gaming OS now. Thanks Valve.
Hasn't Sony been using Linux on its consoles for decades now?

Just my personal opinion.
if you mean the steam deck... it is repairable... and there are quite a few vids on how to do it.
@@revmaillet Correct, the Steam Deck. Not everyone is technically capable or comfortable opening up their devices to repair regardless of content that’s out there to aid them.
ifixit has very easy to follow guides on how to replace each part of the Steam Deck and they sell parts.
This was a really well done look into the Steam deck. You've convinced me to get one eventually
Looks awesome. Only having anti-glare on most expensive version seems a bit naughty though, should be standard on them all.
Thank you for this video sir! Great job!👍
My pleasure!
Nice video on this. Very helpful. I just ordered my deck!
I totally forgot about Vampire the Masquerade: Great memories when I was a kid.
Yeah, it was a really cool Vampire game back in the day. I love how it moves forward in time for the 2nd half of the game.
Its the steam deck not the GOG deck. Why would valve want another store that sells the same games on their system?
Valve already allows the EA Origin launcher on Steam Deck, so why not GOG? It’s probably just up to them to make it compatible…
@@MetalJesusRocks Fair point. But that is only one publisher/developer compared to an entire library that gog sells. I guess we will just have to wait
so far I am running in two modes using the dual boot ability.
Looking forward to getting one of these when stock levels are a bit more sensible!

I dont get mine until october 😣😣😣
I finally got my steam deck two days ago. Just as I planned, I played Valdis Story first and it was glorious. I made a steam collection for games to install before I got it and I'm glad that I did. I'm not happy that the default Steam Deck UI doesn't have an option (that I could find) for selecting multiple games for installation. At least switching to desktop mode and connecting a keyboard let me get that rolling right away.
Man, Valdis Story was really great. I kinda wish it did better, it really was a great game.
Recommendation: Zwei! (Steam)
It's a pretty gorgeous 2D top down japanese RPG. Originally released for the PSP, Japan only. Received now an official translation.
Still waiting for mine. Ordered just a few days after it was announced; still no email. Global supply chain issues, I guess.
That's crazy that GOG won't officially support the steam deck. It would really ramp up their sales. They need to address this.
Gog still works even if its not officially
Heroic Games Launcher supports it kind of. What is funny is they use to be more Linux friendly before they went with the galaxy launcher.

I have been playing emulators since 2003 or 2004 and never had to deal with any of that crap
PS2 is particularly bad at not reading discs, PS1 will take a beating and doesn't mind...
anyway, best of luck, and for the future try to adapt instead of locked in the past (sorry just trying to be funny LOL)
Finally you get a modern gaming PC!!! The steam deck is awesome and I love mine!!! BTW a lot of unsupported games work great, the batman games all work fantastic!
Ok. I was wondering that about Batman because I saw other reviewers playing it on Steam Deck. I'll have to try it.
What is the name of the game at 14:14
Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (2000) - Fantastic RPG on the PC! Check it out!
Where can I find power stone 1 and 2 emulators? Been dying to play those classics.
I love you so much for showing SSX! I played all the games as a kid! big shoutout even if I'm late to the party.

I also sometimes get a feeling IRL where looking or even thinking about corners of objects really hurts and is difficult to process.
whats the spaceship game at 15:46 ?
I've had my Deck for months now. It's amazing... when you use it for what it's specifically intended for (playing recent titles from Steam). Even though they advertise the openness of the platform, way too often I find it prohibitively difficult to accomplish anything besides that one thing. I also don't really enjoy the redundancy of the controls. I feel like they went small where they should've went big, and went big where they should've went small.
how is battery life?
does it even overheat?

What game is being played at 8:58? Looks familiar but I can’t name it
Quick Q: I have steam and had a powerful PC but got tired of continually updating parts. I am now almost all switch now, so my question is: does my steam library cross over to the Deck? If I sign in to my account? I really miss some of those games that just aren’t on the switch
Battery life is what stops me for getting it. Add a double battery life and I will think about it. 1 h for a top tier game is just not enough.
Does anyone recognize that game at the very end during the sign-off? With the low-poly heads? Really curious what that is.
Can u play all games offline and drm games
Some gog games have native linux versions available on the website. They just can't be downloaded with the launcher because it's windows-only. Make sure to check the website for native linux versions.
Regarding dosbox: there are native linux builds, as others have mentioned. The gog dosbox games usually come with premade configurations, often you can simply open that configuration in dosbox and play the game. You might need to change some file paths tho. Linux uses / while windows uses \. You can try to change the paths in the .conf files to / but keep the .bat files with \ because they use the dosbox internal file paths.
that's actually a good tip yeah
I didn't know about Linux native files on the website...
but then again, it's weird because if Wine is set up correctly none of that would ever be necessary
@@FeelingShred The problem with that is that the gog client thinks that it runs in windows. Why should it supply linux files? A solution would be a native linux gog client
@@Flashcardsinfo wrong guy nevermind... that's correct I think
@@Flashcardsinfo I don't know why you're being dramatic about it though... when I used Linux for about 5 years, that was the standard procedure, it worked just fine, I had Wine installed and Dosbox just worked as intended, never had an issue with that...
