I listened to his music that night and fell asleep, when i woke up i went down stairs and saw the TV which announced he had died and i was gutted.
A few days before he died we heard about his new album being released on his birthday. My older daughter, who had just turned 13, said, "I've GOT to get that album!" I knew she liked him; I didn't know how much. It killed me to tell her when I heard the news; she was gutted. She still has a black star on her violin in tribute.
everyone's talking about labyrinth, but merry christmas mr lawrence is, in my opinion, one of the best films ever made, no only was bowie's performance breathtaking, the soundtrack, the other actors, the script, and the setting were perfect, and the film really deserves more recognition. for me, watching the film marked the ending of my childhood. also, bowie's character was from south africa, not new zealand.
Yes I agree it deserves more recognition, maybe a re-release at the movies. Having watched this on the big screen as a Bowie fan was such a memorable experience, his portrayal was quite stunning and made me realise that not only was he breathtakingly handsome but was also an incredible actor as well as a music legend. I recently found the Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence soundtrack in an op-shop for just $1, I had forgotten just how beautiful it really was.
Tootsie Bellevue yes the soundtrack is so lovely, the main theme is easily one of the most beautiful pieces of music i've ever heard, a rerelease would be so wonderful
The minute I heard that main theme score again, took me right back to thinking of Bowie, yes it is very moving if only for that reason. I adore how songs come with their very own personal memory for each of us.
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is one of my favorites, his portrayal of a defiant officer was uplifting given the brutality of Japanese POW camps. the movies serious subject matter, soundtrack, acting and cinematography gelled in a very special way.
I saw 'The Man who fell to earth" only recently. It's a real 'mood' film. Deep & philosophical in a way that you don't really get any more. All sci-fi's are just CGI over story now.
The Man Who Fell To Earth is definitely Bowie's best. He said he didn't even need to play much of a role, because at that time he really felt as an alienated being. He was "playing" himself.
I used to own it on VHS. I've watched "The Man Who Fell To Earth" so many times... It's very deep and has many layers. In a sense we're all aliens trying to survive in this world, longing to go back home where we belong.
You, me and virtually everyone still alive miss him very dearly. I'm convinced he really was The Man Who Fell to Earth & Sold The World. He's back on Mars but hopefully will return some day.
lizzyisalizard What? I think you completely misunderstood what I was saying. Didn't you watch the part of the movie where Thomas Jerome Newton stripped off his human disguise?
It is not about what was the best movie, but what was his best movie performance, and i agree with everything. Thank you, Watchmojo, for keeping David Bowie alive.
This is NOT a 'movie' performance, but Bowie's portrayal of Joseph Merrick, in the 1981 teleplay of The Elephant Man, is sorely MISSED here! 1 of his BEST performances ever!
Thank you for that! I also realize this is about movies but his run on Broadway in The Elephant Man is way too often brushed aside when they talk of Davids acting. I've found a lot of people don't even know about that. That's one of his greatest achievements.
I think they didn't included it bc he actually played himself, it was cameo, not role. The list consists of him playing different characters other than himself, that's why Zoolander don't really count. Also they did not included tv series The Hunger (series, not movie), to which David did intro narrative for each episode.
Same! I was electrified (haha) by Tesla's character the first time I saw the film, and wondered, "Who is it that plays him? Must be a great actor..." then the second time I saw it, someone pointed out that it was David Bowie, who I admired but absolutely did not recognize in that role.
Talking of The Prestige... With all respect, I have a bad feeling the writers of this piece didn't truly study Bowie. For instance, The Hunger (1983) didn't happen "a few years" after Thin White Duke / Station to Station (1976) era. And Bowie was essentially playing an inventor in The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976), combining Thin White Duke with Thomas Newton's character and vice versa. Heck, Station to Station album art is taken straight from the film. And the next album, Low (1977) again used a shot from the film. In that light, Bowie playing Tesla was rather an obvious casting choice.
My son's dad and I have an inside joke that our son has David's spirit because the day he passed, I went into labor. My son loves David's music, especially Starman, and didn't even get scared with the goblins in Labyrinth. Ugh Mr. Bowie was a treasure ❤️ RIP

I don't think you really understood The Man Who Fell To Earth then. Of all the movies, it's easily his best acting, best written film (not by him though), and above all, the most Bowie. Sire the ballroom seen is great, but every single second of TMWFTE is beautiful and well done. It deserves #1.

in my personal opinion there were better kids films from the 80s, but labyrinth is definitely in the top 10 or top 5 for sure. Everyone has their own opinion though.
At the time, no. Labyrinth was only considered great by the majority until the 90's, it wasn't well received when it first released. Which is sad because him Henson stop making movie after it flopped at the box office
One of his best performances was as Mr. Rice in Mr. Rice's Secret. It was an absolutely beautiful movie that had very positive and compassionate messages for teens. It unfortunately also features Mr. Rice's funeral with a beautiful eulogy that could have easily been read at his own funeral. I didn't find this one until after his passing, so it had a bit of sadness because of that. It's one of my children's favorite movies.
When I saw Basquiat, I didn't even see David Bowie after a while... He really was Andy Warhol! I will miss him, though. He reinvented himself through the decades, musically and image wise...
I wasn't surprised that David Bowie was cast as Andy Warhol. He actually knew the man and even had a song on Hunky Dory about him. And I'm fine with Thomas Jerome Newton being the #1 slot. My parents talked about "The Man Who Fell to Earth" incessantly. It was an image from that film that was used for the album art on "Low." "Labyrinth" may be the Bowie film I hold dearest to my heart because of my age, but I am content with "The Man Who Fell to Earth" being regarded as his best role. He was always amazing at being the Other.
Amongst all the films and music videos he did do, there's the tantalising possibilities of the unmade projects or auditions he didn't get, like The Joker in Burton's Batman, Elrond in Lord of the Rings, that Egon Schiele biopic, there's an interview where he talks about a film composed entirely of pieces from other films, which sounds a bit MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA, but could've been watchable, and he told William Burroughs about a Sinbad film he was picturing doing.
Can we all agree that Bowie in The man who fell to earth is the sexiest thing to grace this world...

i love the man that fell to earth but the Labrynth shouldve been number 1

+Lolli Corpse I agree Labyrinth should have been number 1 for sure
+Alexander Svedberg As it should be. Well said.
Right you are! I loved The Labyrinth :D !
yes yes yes fangirls are not alone on the internet
RIP MR. Bowie/Stardust. You are missed.
I have most of these movies, but there's a couple on here I don't have that I have to look for.
The Linguini Incident is one of them.
Can we also just talk about how he was originally considered to play Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049 before he passed away? He would've been absolutely amazing!
I miss David Bowie so much! He was sooooo talented. Even as an actor!
JUST WHEN I WAS GETTING OVER HIS DEATH WATCHMOJO HAS TO COME ALONG AND BRING BACK MEMORIES FUCK
+Dani Bernabei-grassi i still havent got over his death and as much as i love this video the fact he is no longer here just got to me again
I keep going back and forth between forgetting he's died and mourning his death.
That's currently where I am right now D":
I was in floods of tears after watching this it just brings it back that he isnt here anymore really tears you apart
I feel ya on that. And with Alan Rickman and Prince following, I'm basically dying on the inside ಠ╭╮ಠ
Really inspiring list. I'm still trying to catch up with David's extraordinary achievements.
#i move the stars for no one
if you think labyrinth should of been 1# in this countdown
definitely
Definitely !
+The KeyGardian definitely! I would also have Maltezard from Arthur and the invisibles as an honourable mention.
for sure
+The KeyGardian You've run so long/
You've run so far! :-)
The Gentleman was always at his finest. Bowie = emperor of musical enchantment
labyrinth should have been number 1 It was the best kids flim of 80's
true
in my personal opinion there were better kids films from the 80s, but labyrinth is definitely in the top 10 or top 5 for sure. Everyone has their own opinion though.
At the time, no. Labyrinth was only considered great by the majority until the 90's, it wasn't well received when it first released. Which is sad because him Henson stop making movie after it flopped at the box office
+Sour Grape no offense dude but your grammar is really crappy.
He wasn't in those
The Hunger is my favourite, though I enjoy watching all the movies from the list.
RIP David Bowie
i miss this hot man that changed my life with his voice and his unbelievable talent
we need a time machine to go back in time and bring David bowie
One of his best performances was as Mr. Rice in Mr. Rice's Secret. It was an absolutely beautiful movie that had very positive and compassionate messages for teens. It unfortunately also features Mr. Rice's funeral with a beautiful eulogy that could have easily been read at his own funeral. I didn't find this one until after his passing, so it had a bit of sadness because of that. It's one of my children's favorite movies.
you remind me of the babe
what babe?
the babe with the power
what power?
the power of voodoo
who do?
you do
do what?
remind me of the babe
I saw my baby, crying hard as babe could cry.
What could I do?
Thanks for these movie tips ! I’ll be watching them all thru quarantine time
When I saw Basquiat, I didn't even see David Bowie after a while... He really was Andy Warhol! I will miss him, though. He reinvented himself through the decades, musically and image wise...
I went to The Prestige having NO idea Bowie was in it and was so shocked to see him I yelled out "BOWIE!!" in the theatre, lol.
His portrayal of Tesla is my favorite one
I wasn't surprised that David Bowie was cast as Andy Warhol. He actually knew the man and even had a song on Hunky Dory about him. And I'm fine with Thomas Jerome Newton being the #1 slot. My parents talked about "The Man Who Fell to Earth" incessantly. It was an image from that film that was used for the album art on "Low." "Labyrinth" may be the Bowie film I hold dearest to my heart because of my age, but I am content with "The Man Who Fell to Earth" being regarded as his best role. He was always amazing at being the Other.
+Tara Dresbach I think the album art for Station to Station was also taken from The Man Who Fell to Earth
+burpie I think you're right. Both Low and Station to Station used images from The Man Who Fell to Earth as album art.
The first time I saw Labyrinth I was three years old and I just couldn't stop singing every song...Thirteen years later it's the same ;)
Why does the voice over keep saying "wouldn't expect him to"? .. . like he was EVER PREDICTABLE!
mine was not part of the list and it introduced me to David Bowie. Arthur and the Invisibles 1,2 and 3 were my favorite from him.
"Your eyes can be so cruel"
Amongst all the films and music videos he did do, there's the tantalising possibilities of the unmade projects or auditions he didn't get, like The Joker in Burton's Batman, Elrond in Lord of the Rings, that Egon Schiele biopic, there's an interview where he talks about a film composed entirely of pieces from other films, which sounds a bit MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA, but could've been watchable, and he told William Burroughs about a Sinbad film he was picturing doing.
"What's with that daddy shit?" - David Bowie
4 years later and you’re still with me starman
I miss him
