    Hi guys, wondering if you’ve thought about doing a video about what essentials you bring with you in your pack for a trip. Love the videos.

    I really connected with the protagonist at the beginning. What a great character 😂 Excellent vid. I recently got a full dry suit but partly wish I'd gone two-piece for the option to go topless

    Glad to see that fly fishing waders made their way into the canoeing community, great technology! A few tips from wearing gore tex waders for 15 years now: Keeping sand out of the shoes is key because the are very abrasive, merino long johns are by far the best base layer (you'll get much less sweaty), as soon as your in camp turn them inside out and let them dry (reduces long term smell and short term wetness, obviously), during winter take your time to find even small holes by 1) turning them inside out, 2) spraying them with alcohol (in a spray bottle), 3) holes will appear magically, which you can mark (circle) with a pen, 4) and use UV sealant (activate with UV light) for flexible and fast seal!!

    I have used these on trips to Lake Superior for several years, with a dry top. Made the decision after realizing how much trouble it is for a woman to go to the bathroom wearing a farmer jane wetsuit and a dry top!

    Been considering these pants after seeing you guys beat them up and a miserable, cold rainy fall trip where I was soak right through most of the trip.
    Reviews seem a bit mixed from what I see online, saying the older version was better. Knowing how rough some of your trips are makes me more confident in these pants.

    I have same trousers in the Hydrus 3.0 material. They keep you super dry, and most importantly they keep you warm, even during the Scottish winters we experience across the pond. In addition, I use a pair of Palm gradient boots as they drain well and provide some degree of ankle support. We call the tops dry cags. Great video by the way:)

    When I was in the military I did a stint in the safety systems shop.
    We used to sew and tape the booties on the immersion suits the aircrew would wear.
    Looks like they are made almost exactly the same

    I've got the sockless version that I wear tucked into high neoprene wetsuit boots. I love them. Got the sockless version because I was worried about them flooding and not draining if I took a long swim.

    Be sure to have a tube of Aquaseal in the repair kit. And trashy rain pants to wear over in the event you need to portage through thorny "puckerbrush".
    Ahh. I see you added this to the end. Keep on paddlin'

    I have owned a version of the Gore-Tex Kokatat dry pants for 25 years. Literally hundreds of canoe and kayak trips. These things take abuse. Burn holes are a definitely issue but easily repaired. They just laugh off wear from rocks, berry brambles, devils club, etc.

    Good video. Think I'll be getting a pair of those pants. Have you ever considered using wading shoes (the kind fly fishers use with stocking foot waders) in place of the water shoes/tennis shoes you were wearing in the video? Seems like the Tempest pants are very similar to stocking foot waders, with the additional feature of being able to snug them around the waist.

    • @henrythebasset8749
      @henrythebasset8749 3 роки тому +1

      That would be a great idea. The felt bottom of those shoes sticks to those slippery rocks.

    • @NorthernScavenger
      @NorthernScavenger  2 роки тому

      I have heard mixed reviews on the wading shoes. While the felt can be good in rivers, some of the wading shoes are heavier, and the felt doesn't do as well when dirty. Though I have yet to test this theory myself. Just some thoughts to consider. Cheers

    What do you wear on your feet (footwear) when tripping and portaging? Leather hiking boots? Old sneakers? Water foot ware?

    • @NorthernScavenger
      @NorthernScavenger  2 роки тому +1

      We wear a combination of old running shoes, proper hiking shoes and river shoes. Some of the hiking boots with larger tread tend not to grip as nicely on the slippery rocks as running shoes or river shoes.

    "Aquaseal" is the shit. I've got some here with the "Cure Accelerator." I've heard of fly fishermen who use it to cover knots to improve sliding in rod eyes and make the line more aerodynamic and the knots stronger, and shit...

    This is next-level comfort for canoe trippers. Do you find you have to burp the air out of the dry pants like you would with a drysuit?

    • @NorthernScavenger
      @NorthernScavenger  3 роки тому

      Great question! Yes usually as soon as I put them on a squat down into a cannon ball and pull the waist put to let the air out!

  • @peterregan1300

    Your shoes did not fall apart? I get a lot of weird looks canoeing in waders( essentially the same technology as the pants you use) but I’m dry and warm and able to fetch water, load floatplanes without getting wet. You might want to watch the Simms You Tube video on the best way to patch waders/pants. Sometimes just Aquaseal but you look as though you need to use a patch as well. Thanks for the great info. Oh, I wear felt soled boots as they are the best on wet, slippery river rocks.

    • @NorthernScavenger
      @NorthernScavenger  3 роки тому

      Yeah we might do a separate video on different patch jobs eventually! Good to know Simms has one. And yes the felt bottoms work great! I will be adopting a felt shoe system for this season!
